”There is a port of no return, where
ships may ride at anchor for a little
space. And then some starless night
the cable slips, leaving only an eddy
at the mooring place. Gulls veer no
longer, Sailor rest your oar. No tangled wreckage will be washed
ashore.”
Chaplain’s Offerings: Tom Russell, Base Chaplain
When writing for the
upcoming issue of Boat
Notes, it sometimes
seems odd to be writing
for the future and recounting the present or
the past. I guess that's
the way it goes for any
quarterly publication.
Anyway, it has been a busy time since
September. There are several points to
cover and I'll do my best to squeeze it
all in on this one page.
Any time that I mention not having many
Shipmates passing on during some
period, it always seems to incur a number of passings shortly thereafter.
Therefore, there is no mention of numbers in this report. On Friday 24 September we held Honors for Bill G. Elrod
at the Montville Church & Allen funeral
home in Montville CT. This turned out
to be one of our most well-attended
Honors events with new members Norm
Kuzel, Ed Russell, and Dale Mackay
joining the Honors Detail. Their presence brought the detail attending to 23,
one of our best showings this year. We
now have 32 dedicated members to
draw upon for Honors duty, providing
good coverage considering those who
are unable to attend. You can imagine
the impression that 20 plus Shipmates
showing up to honor their Shipmate's
life make on the family and friends attending. We continue to receive overflowing numbers of praise and gratitude
for doing this work. Well done, Honors
Detail.
On Saturday, 9 October, a Burial at Sea
for Wesley and Mary Ayers was held at
Historic Ship Nautilus, permanently
berthed at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton CT. This was the third
of these burials that have been done by
Sub Vets Groton Base and it is truly an
honor to take part in these special
events. Wesley Ayers had passed away
a few years ago as did his wife, Mary.
Bill Eckert was Mary's son from a previous marriage who was warmly accepted
by Wesley when he married Mary. Bill
said that Wes was like a blood father if
not more so. It was Bill's wish that
Wesley and Mary's ashes be buried at
sea. The burial at Nautilus was on a
beautiful day, you couldn't have asked
for more. What made it special was a
surprise from the Eckert's with a handsome burial box, wooden, and fashioned
by their son. What made it a surprise
was that the box was about three times
the size of our previous containers and
weighed about 25 pounds. This called
for Plan B. Our slide for the commitment
was too light and too small to handle the
box. Plan B turned out to be our two
bearers, Obie Hill and Ed Priebe, to be
stationed halfway across the aft gangway
leading to Nautilus. At the words of commitment, they ceremoniously lifted the
box over the rail of the gangway and
dropped it to the water. No one even
cracked a smile as the box plunged to
the bottom of the river with a huge
splash. The Eckert's were impressed
with the entire service and had thanks for
everyone involved. Mission accomplished.
On a definitely lighter side, the Chaplain's office has taken on new event in
concert with the Submarine Base. In
September, SubVets Groton Base was
invited by SUBRON 12 to attend a
Homecoming for USS Annapolis. This is
a relatively new event for SUBASE and
consists of welcoming home boats and
their crews from deployments. In general, they have a mini carnival affair at
the pier with a tent, food and drink,
spacewalk for kids, and families and
friends gathered to meet their loved
ones arriving. This turned out to be an
opportunity for the Saluting Battery to
fire a welcoming salute which had been
separately proposed two years ago.
The thought was to fire the salute from
the Sub Memorial. John C's suggested
to SUBRON 12 CMC Wes Koshoffer
that the salute be fired from Nautilus.
Suggestion accepted with enthusiasm.
Briefly, the drill was muster at Nautilus,
dress ship, 12 Sub Vets on deck saluting with ship's crew, seven gun welcoming salute, and then deploy to the Lower
Base and Pier 6. Then, Sub Vets in
vests and caps, mingled with the wives,
girl friends, fathers and mothers, chatting and showing our presence in support of the effort. When the gates
opened, we flowed in with the mob and
had a great time welcoming the crew,
meeting the CO, XO, COB, and many
crewmembers. In October, on Navy
Birthday, we repeated Homecoming
with USS Pittsburgh. This was another
successful event even though rain and
wind was forecast. Our routine was
further solidified and even though we
had fewer attendees, we made a big
impression on the pier. Better yet, we
even met CO, XO, and COB at the
Navy Ball that night and again next evening at the COXOCOB dinner at the
club. XO called the gun salute
"Awesome" and Pittsburgh even had
troops on deck at hand salute.
What can I say – this job keeps on getting better and better. I'll tell you about
hospital visits next time. Remember
that the Kingdom of Heaven is within
you, not way up in the air.
Blessings, Tom

Commander’s Corner
Hello Shipmates at
Groton Base and a hearty
welcome aboard to any
new members. We thank
you for joining us, and we
hope that you are just as
proud of being a member
of Groton Base as the
rest of us are.
Assuming that this won’t get to you until
after 1 January welcome to 2011 and
HAPPY NEW YEAR. I hope that you and
your families had a great Thanksgiving,
Christmas, and New Years. If you received
this newsletter before the end of the year,
we will be into 2011 very shortly and off and
running into another big year for SUBVETS
Groton Base.
The last quarter of 2010 was our busiest
part of the year.
We held several major events that involved the support and efforts of many
members and family.
Following the National Convention in
September we held a great Steak N’ Lobster Dinner prepared by the USS NEW
MEXICO and our famous Steamship Round
Dinner prepared by C.R. Wilson and Herb
Horne. We had a very successful Thanksgiving and Holiday Caring and Sharing
program. The SUBVETTES put on a great
dinner for our CO/XO/COB dinner; we participated in the annul SUBASE Retirement
Seminar as well as the annual Red-WhiteBlue Mass; we participated in several area
Veterans Day events including our own
Tolling of the Boats/Memorial Service and
reception which was very well attended,
and we had a very successful fall field day
in cleaning up our clubhouse.. We closed
out 2010 with our Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony; our annual Christmas
Party, and our Kids Christmas Party thanks
to Debbie Selby.
In between all of these events our EBoard and Committee Chairs have been all
very busy working on their programs. We
have a new Vice Commander with Jeff
Rowe, and a new Treasurer with Mark Wiggins.
Our primary focus has been in pushing
Membership Renewals. My sincere thanks
to all of you for your membership renewals
for 2010, and to Mike Munhall and the
members of his Membership Committee
who processed all of those Membership
Renewals entering them into both the local
and National Data bases.
In 2009 we had our first ever budget in
45 years. We are now trying harder to get
our arms a little more around our finances.
With its size running Groton Base is different than any other base. It is like running a
small business. It will take time but we will
get there.
Our Kaps 4 Kids Program continues to
bring happiness to children around CT; and
our Base Archivist was successful in shipping
off all of the material in the USSVI National
Archives. The Boat Sponsorship program
continues to get our newsletter out to the Submarines, and our docents at the Submarine
Force Library and Museum continue to inform
the public about the Submarine Force. Our
License Plate Program continues to serve as
both a recruiting program as well as providing
Dolphin License Plates for our membership in
CT; our Westport Satellite Group continues to
grow and support Groton Base, and with the
time, efforts, and donations of our membership we continue to maintain, and improve the
only clubhouse in USSVI YOUR CLUBHOUSE being the “Dominic Joe Negri Clubhouse” Each of our committees in their own
way continues to be productive for Groton
Base.
We have all been very busy for the better
good of Groton Base serving not only our
membership, but the community around us as
well. Well done to all on your work and
efforts. Your efforts all contribute to Groton
Base being as successful as it can be, and
maintaining its status as the First and Finest.
So what can we look forward to in 2011?
Let’s start with Membership. Although we
dropped many members who did not renew by
31 Dec we should still work on getting them to
rejoin. We should also work as a team to recruit new members into SUBVETS Groton
Base. There are lots of Submariners out there
who served from the early days of the Cold
War through the 1990s and the 2000s who
are our Shipmates who have not joined
USSVI. Recruiting and Retention are all
hands efforts. Why shouldn’t those Submariners be enjoy being a member of SUBVETS
as you are. We shared good times with them
when we were on the boats, so why not share
the good times and experiences as a member
of SUBVETS? Many of them are either eligible
for the HOLLAND CLUB, or would be in the
next few years. We should be honoring them
along with our other HOLLAND CLUB members.
There are a lot of Active Duty Submariners
who are potential members? The Enlisted
guys, Chief Petty Officers, COBs, Junior Officers, and COs who are the ALL STARS manning our Submarines today are the potential
future of our organization, but only if we get
them signed up. Despite our best efforts there
are so many Submariners presently out there
on our boats that are either still unaware of
SUBVETS or just take us to be a bar for
cheap beer and good chili. They should be a
part of SUBVETS.
Our goal for last year was to end the year
with 3,000 or more members. Between getting
back our Non-Renewals and recruiting both
older and younger Submariners into our ranks
we should be able to easily reach that milestone. If we each recruit at least one new
member we should easily meet and pass that
goal.
In the mean time we will be planning
our 47th Anniversary Celebration for the
early May time frame (5-7 May). It is all
about having a great time for our members and trying to build our Base Scholarship Program on the success that we had
last year. Those are the primary functions
of the events of the weekend. This takes
volunteers, and people to participate in
the events. Because of the economic
situation we are going through we have
cut back the prices to hopefully entice
more people to join us. I KNOW THE
MEMBERHSIP OF GROTON BASE
WILL STEP TO THE PLATE TO HELP
ENSURE THIS IS THE BIGGEST AND
BEST ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
YET.
We will also be planning our 2011
HOLLAND CLUB Induction Ceremony for
04 June. With the new changes to the
HOLLAND CLUB rules we will be honoring 65 of our Senior Citizens of the Submarine Force. Again we hope for a
memorable ceremony for our members
who have reached this significant milestone and their families.
Another goal for 2011 should be to
increase the numbers of members who
receive our newsletter electronically to
further help reduce the cost of doing business.
Plus we have Base Elections to run.
We look for members to step up to the
plate to take on the various leadership
positions required in running the base. We
also look to the membership to participate
in the election with their voice and their
vote.
There’s one thing that bothers me that
we need your help to figure out. That is
why our events are so poorly attended.
We put out some great dinners at very
affordable prices. Yet getting people to
come and fill the seats is very difficult
despite plenty of advertising in newspapers, radio, and our email broadcasts. For
example our last two dinners where our
Steamship Round Dinner was $15.00
each and we only had 41 members there.
And our Christmas Party was $5.00 each
and we could only muster 43 guests.
Those are just two examples. We have
many others. We need your feedback that
would help us determine what we are
doing wrong where we can’t fill up the
dinners. We need your feedback. Please
provide that to the House Committee
Chairman Stan Mathis at
[email protected] or (860) 8848857.
We have a lot to do so Let’s get to
work and LET’S ROLL!
One final thing. In November I was
honored by being inducted into the CT
Veterans Hall of Fame joining Shipmates
Ernie Plantz, and Jim Tierney in this pres-

tigious recognition within our state. Although the award was presented to me, I
view this award as an award that I accepted
on behalf of SUBVETS Groton Base. You
folks and your families are the ones doing
the hard work to ensure our programs are
successful. You the membership of Groton
Base are the ones who supported Groton
Base enabling me to be recognized. If I had
my way each of you would have received
the award with me because my accomplishments are truly Groton Base Accomplishments. I don’t do any of this alone. We are
all part of a successful team. SO THANK
YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR WHAT YOU
DO THAT BROUGHT US THIS RECOGNITION. YOU ARE THE BEST AND HARDEST WORKING MEMBERS IN THE USSVI
ORGANIZATION.
In closing I believe that again we are off
to a great start to another great year at
Groton Base. I personally look forward to
communicating and working with all of you
in this New Year as we close out the decade with high hopes for continued success
for Groton Base.
I am so proud to be the Base Commander for SUBVETS Groton Base where
all of the members are all pulling together in the same direction to make
U.S. Submarine Veterans Groton Base
the premier organization for Submariners, and their families.
Thanks for all that you presently do
for SUBVETS Groton Base. Keep up the
great work. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO
HELP IMPROVE OUR ORGANIZATION
AND MAKE US BETTER? DO YOUR
PART. Bring those ideas forward and

USSVI Groton Base News
First of all welcome
home to USS PITTSBURGH (SSN 720), and
USS ALEXANDRIA
(SSN 757) who recently
returned from deployment. Thanks for what
you do, and for the sacrifices made over
the last few months while on deployment.
Your families and shipmates here in
Groton have missed you, and are proud
of what you do.
In a few weeks the Battle E winners
will be announced. So a hearty congratulations to all crewmembers on the
Boats who win the Battle E here in
Groton Ct. Congratulations also to all
Shipmates who have been selected as
the Sailor of the Year/Junior Sailor of the
year. Having your boat chosen as the
Battle E Boat, and getting selected as the
SOY/JSOY means that you are the best
of the best. It’s not an easy accomplishment by no means, and certainly one to
be proud of.
We also have many new third class,
second class and first class petty officers
who were recently advanced as a result
of the last advancement in rate cycle.
Congratulations to you guys on your
advancement. Advancements are tough
these days. Now get hot and start working on getting advanced to the next pay
grade. Please, if you were advanced,
and you are a member, please make
sure you contact the Membership
Chairman Mike Munhall at
[email protected] to get
your new rating info updated in the
data Base.
I’d like to offer special congratulations
to RADM Frank Caldwell who has been a
Groton Base Member for many years,
and just relieved as COMSUBPAC.
2010 was a very successful year for
SUBVETS Groton Base. It was a good
year with regards to Membership; we
accomplished so much, and grew in so
many ways. It was a year where not
only did we grow internally with our
membership numbers; we improved
some of our long standing programs,
and continue to develop new programs
like our Homecoming Program as well.
We made a difference to those around
us and continue to improve the awareness of our organization in the community. People are more aware of SUBVETS Groton Base, in a very favorable light. A good example of this is the
SUBVETS Appreciation Day held by
SUBSCHOOL this summer.
SUBVETS is so much more than a
bar, and a place to get cheap beer,
and a good bowl of chili. We are part
of the community, and part of Team
New London. We are serious about
remembering those on eternal patrol,
and above all we are SHIPMATES and
FAMILY who share a common bond
being “Brothers of the Phin”
With the Holidays behind us we face
many challenges for 2011. We are gearing up for another Anniversary Celebration. Last year we produced record
numbers in support for our Scholarship
program and attendance at the Anniversary Events. Again we are hoping that
this will be the biggest and best one yet,
and are starting much earlier in taking
reservations, and sponsorships. As we
are planning for the Anniversary Celebration at the same time we will also be
planning for the Submarine Birthday
Ball, and Memorial Day as well as kicking our HOLLAND CLUB Preparations
up into higher gear. These are all
events that will be here before we know
it.
We also have several great House
Committee dinners and functions, in the
next few months.
There are three important Base items
of business that we have to tend to.
Most importantly is wrapping up our
2011 membership renewals. We have
many members who have not renewed
as of this writing who have now become
Members not in good standing. At the
end of January they will be dropped from
our Roster. They can always rejoin, and
most will if asked. This is an all hands
evolution. Take a look at the NonRenewal list posted at the club and on
our web page and see who you can convince to rejoin us at the First and finest.
The second item of business is the
Base Elections. Nominations will open
shortly, and Base Elections will follow in
the spring. Again we find ourselves with
the challenge of getting leaders to step
up to all of our positions. STEP UP AND
MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Finally our National Organization is
working to establish ourselves as a War
Veterans Organization. To do this we
need to document the service years of all
of our members including Associate
members who have served in the Armed
Forces. There’s a form included in this
Newsletter please take a few minutes to
complete the form and send it back.
2010 was a busy year. It will be hard to
top because you the membership of
Groton Base raising the bar and making
us better and better. All of you did a lot
to improve Groton Base, to improve our
clubhouse, and to help out the community. You’ve accomplished a lot, and can
hold your heads high as members of
SUBVETS Groton Base. We are the
“First and Finest Base” of USSVI because of all that you do..
Enjoy this edition of Boat Notes which
includes coverage of all our events, all of
the things we’ve mentioned, and many
more. When you are done reading it,
pass it on to a Shipmate who isn’t a
member to enjoy, and recruit him to join
SUBVETS Groton Base. If you get an
opportunity, come down and visit your
club.

Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees members are
Bob Bentley, John
Tippett, Red Padgett,
Charlie Starratt, Ray
Powell, Charlie
McMullin, Dave Bergstrom, John
Wynn, and Bud Atkins. Bob Bentley
was selected as the new Chairman
at their first meeting. The Board of
Trustees meets at a minimum on a
quarterly basis as well as if there are
pending issues. The meetings are
open to the membership.
The primary duty and function of
the Board of Trustees is to set policy and procedure for operation of
all clubhouse facilities including bar
and galley, not to conflict with or
violate any CT state liquor laws and
regulations.
If you have any input, suggestions, compliments, complaints or
recommendations as to the meth-
ods of operation of the clubhouse
they must be submitted in writing to
this Board only.
In cases of complaints the person
making the complaint must appear
before this board; if unable to do so,
a written and witnessed statement
must be submitted. The Board reviews the complaint in the presence
of all persons involved. If a decision
is unobtainable at that time all persons involved are notified in writing.
Color Guard: Charlie Starratt
I would like to thank
the members who have
consistently supported
the Color Guard at the
many events in the past
few months.
We are always looking for additional members to expand the Color
Guard. A few more members would
allow us more flexibility to support
our events. Requirements are that
you have the Groton Base Vest and
Garrison Hat and the Dolphin Tie
sold at our base.
If you are interested, please contact Charlie Starratt at (860) 8590583.
Thanks,

recipients are preparing for their First Semester finals, the
Scholarship Committee will be gearing up
for the 2011 Scholarship Program!
For those members who are planning to sponsor a student for next
years Scholarship Awards, please
remember eligibility requires that you
be a “Member in Good Standing” for
one year. In short, your dues must be
paid prior to 31 December 2010. The
delinquent list has been posted in the
on-line NEWS LETTERS, by the
Membership Committee Chairman.
Scholarship Applications and the
PPM can be obtained at the Club
House and “on-line”, on the Groton
Base website. On the Home Page
(www.subvetsgroton.org), click on
“Base Documents” (on the left side of
the screen), select Groton Base
Scholarship Program, and then click
on “Scholarship Application”. The
Application and PPM can be printed
out.
Scholarship Applications will be
received by the Committee beginning
1 March 2011 and ending at the
close of business on 15 April 2011.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Committee Members for their time and investment in
this Program, as well as all who have
contributed toward making the 2009
Scholarship Awards possible. We
are always grateful for any contributions toward this endeavor!
United Way
Combined Federal Campaign
For those of you that can contribute to
the United Way Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) at work, please consider
making a donation to the USSVI Groton
Base Scholarship Fund. You can designate where you would like your donations
sent just by writing it in on your pledge
cards. Last year four members wrote in
"USSVI Groton Base Scholarship Fund"
as the recipient of their donation on their
pledge card. We monitored this process closely to verify that these donations did in fact get to the Groton Base
Scholarship Fund and they did. If
you choose to donate to the Groton
Base Scholarship Fund during this
year’s campaign, please notify me so
we can verify that your request was
processed correctly.
My Best Wishes for a very Merry
Christmas and a Happy, Healthy
New Year!

National Submarine Memorial East: Dick McGirr
The Veterans Day
service was very well
attended. I would like
to extend my appreciation to the Memorial Committee for
getting the Memorial
ready for the service,
Also, I thank the
SUBSCOOL sailors
for their support during the service. In
addition, the guest speaker gave an
excellent talk related to the contributions
all veterans made during their service.
Several things have been going on
at the Memorial related to upkeep. First,
the guard rail has been replaced and
looks very nice. We have to wait about
a year for the wood to cure before we
can apply stain. Secondly, we met with
a steelworker and a sandblaster regarding the much needed work on the fair-
water. They indicated they would submit a
proposal with costs in the near future and
then we will present it to the Mayor for consideration. This work will be the most expensive to complete and will probably have
to go out for bid.
The care of the lawns and bushes has
resulted in the lawns looking very good, but
the bushes around the Memorial need to
be replaced as they are overgrowing the
entrances and the holly bushes are infested with bugs which will require them to
probably be replaced. The Christmas lights
will be put up on December 11 and after
the holiday season they will be taken down
and the Memorial will be in lay-up until
Spring.
Again I would like to express my thanks
to the members of the Memorial Committee
and the SUBSCOL sailors without whose
help it would not be possible to maintain
the Memorial in the condition it deserves.
We have had many compliments on
how good the memorial looks.

SUBSCOL Graduation Program: Jack Gallimore
Our Submarine School
Graduation Program continues to run well for the
enlisted and
officer graduations, as well
as the three additional
advanced courses.
Graduating classes at Sub
School consist of Basic Enlisted Submarine School (BESS), Submarine Officers
Basic Course (SOBC), Submarine Advanced Officers Course (SOAC), Submarine Communications Electronics Radio
Field (SCERF), Submarine Electronic,
Computer Field (SECF), and Torpedo
School. Every time Naval Submarine
School graduates a class of BESS, SOBC,
or SOAC, SubVets Groton Base is an active participant.
Our part in those graduations is to conduct a Tolling of the Boats, often referred
to as the SHIPMATES REMEMBRANCE
CEREMONY, so that the students and
future submariners as well as the family
members present are exposed to this time
honored ceremony of the submarine force.
Upon completion of the Tolling of the
Boats, the designated SubVet for that
week has a brief opportunity to talk to the
students to tell them the significance of
this ceremony, what SUBVETS is about,
and why, once they are Qualified in Submarines, they should become a member of
our organization. We also provide guest
speakers for the SCERF, SECF “A”, and
Torpedo "A" Schools.
These programs are very important for us
as an organization and for the students
learning an important piece of their heritage. In August 2010, the SubVets Groton
Base "Heritage Award" presentation formally became part of the BESS graduation. A certificate and a Groton Base
"Challenge' coin are presented to the Class
Leader. SubVets has been privileged to
take part in the SubSchool graduation ceremonies throughout the year, with 24
Enlisted (BESS) graduations, and a dozen
of the Officer graduations ceremonies.
Plus, we provided guest speakers for about
two dozen class "A' schools. We are proud
and glad to make SubVets part of the
memories for each of the graduating students.
Thanks, to the following Shipmates who
have been recent participants in the Tolling
of the Boats and or as Guest speakers: John Carcioppolo, Bud Atkins, Paul
Orstad, Tom Russell, Red Padgett, Brian
Turley, Doc McCance, and Norman Kuzel.
Through the support of these volunteers
and others we are able to man the watch
bill and provide this valuable service to
Submarine School.
The BESS Graduations are usually every
other Friday at 9am at Wilkinson Hall.
SOBC and SOAC graduations are held at
Bledsoe Hall when scheduled. If you are
interested in being involved with the
Tolling of the Boats or being a guest
speaker for one of these graduations
please don’t hesitate to contact
me. Desire and willingness to provide
some of your time for these young
graduating students is a very important
part of our submarine heritage and basic
public relations with the students and
their families. It doesn't take a professional speaker to conduct either of the
"remembrance' events, just the ability to
read and communicate. The Advanced
courses, however, do require a little
more involvement from the speaking
perspective. The ability to address a
group is not as difficult as one might
anticipate. A sincere willingness to provide some words of motivation and commitment to the students is all that is
necessary. Shipmates who have past
experience as an instructor or as COB
are excellent choices.
If you are interested in being involved
with the Tolling of the Boats or being
a guest speaker
for one of these graduations please
don’t hesitate to contact me, Jack Gallimore, at (860)464-8367 or [email protected] to be put on the
schedule. There are many openings
that need to be filled and new faces are
ALWAYS desired. The students always enjoy our presence and participation in their graduation.

Club News: Club Manager; Karen Torkelson
Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had
a great 2010 and I
hope that you have
an even better 2011.
The clubhouse is doing well. We look forward to all the special events planned this year and the
surprises we always get throughout the
year. Hopefully we don’t have any major
problems like the flooding we had last
year.
We have several groups planning their
reunions at the clubhouse this year.
Some are doing a meet & greet while
others are planning their main dinner in
our hall. If you are interested in using
your clubhouse for your reunion, please
give us a call and we will be happy to
help you.
Lunches are going great. We have busy
days and quiet ones, we can’t always
predict what kind of day it will be, so
please have patience if you come on a
busy day and we take a little longer than
usual to bring you your meal. Please
call ahead if you are bringing a party of
6 or more, so that we can insure prompt
service.
I want to take the time to thank the volunteers that help keep the clubhouse
running, Tom Connors, who is a huge
asset to me and the club, Mike Munhall,
who helps with so many things from
fixing things to helping me with paperwork, the Saturday morning clean-up
crew, that could always use an extra
hand and Jack Casey, who steps in
whenever we need an extra set of hands
for our luncheons and busy days. Without these volunteers, we would not be
able to have such a great club!
Our number is 860- 445-5262, please
call if you need anything or would like to
make special arrangements to visit your
clubhouse.
This is the members clubhouse and if
you have concerns, questions or ideas,
please feel free to contact me. The club
phone number is 860-445-5262 or email
me at [email protected].

“Silent Service” Plates: Harrison Solt
The SUBVETS
creed, in part, is “To
perpetuate the
memory of our Shipmates who gave
their lives in the
pursuit of their duties while serving
their country. Having the Silent Service
License Plate on your vehicles is one way
to “live the creed”.
The requirements for the Connecticut
“Silent Service” License Plate are (1), you
are a member, in good standing, of SUBVETS, (2) you have a CT registered vehicle, and (3) You are listed on the registration. If you satisfy items 1 through 3, the
process is simple. Email or call me, at
[email protected], or (860) 464-
9540 and I will send you everything you will
need, including membership information if
necessary.
Fees for this specialty license plate are
quite reasonable. Transferring an existing
vanity or marker plate is $65.00. Taking the
next “off the shelf” Silent Service plate is
$65.00. Establishing a new vanity plate on
the Silent Service plate is $130.00.
Once the completed application and your
check made payable to DMV is returned to
me, your membership status is validated.
The application and check is then forwarded to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
After about 4-8 weeks, your plates arrive in the mail with instructions regarding
the disposal of your old plates. If there any
interim problems, I will work with DMV to
ensure every one is happy.
I continue to get inquiries from submariners who didn’t know about USSVI but
spotted a Silent Service plate or were referred to me by DMV, so SubVets plates
on our roads are making a difference!
Step up, be the next one on your block
to have the Silent Service License Plate on
your vehicle.

Treasurer: Mark Wiggins
My name is Mark Wiggins. Some of you might
know me from being Stan
Mathis’s House Committee
Assistant for the past two
years. I was recently
asked to take over as the
Groton Base Treasurer. Our old Treasurer, David Douglas, had to resign before
his two years was up due to needs of the
Navy.
I accepted the task to take over as
Treasurer until the next elections, in 2011.
My background in finances includes being
the Emblematic Sales representative on 6
of the 9 boats that I served on. I am completing a Masters in Science degree from
the University of New Haven in Engineering Management. This advanced degree
is half engineering and half MBA. I will
complete my degree this winter semester
once my Thesis is complete. I also work
with finances in my job at Electric Boat as
an Engineering Senior in the Integrated
Logistics field. The E-Board felt that I
have the financial background that will
lead to a successful completion to the
current term as the Treasurer. If I am
successful I will run again for re-election.
Prior to changing the Base Chapter
accounts, the Groton Base Commander
called a Special Executive Board (EBoard) meeting. During the meeting the
Treasurer brought up how the accounts
work now, who was on each account and
how the bills were being paid. The
Treasurer then brought up solutions to
bring our accounts around to meet the
intent of the By-Laws. The E-Board
voted to name Tom Conners as the Base
Financial Manager. He will report to the
Groton Base Treasurer and will support
the Treasurer in Bank Transactions and
record keeping involved with all U.S.
SUBVET Groton Base checking, and
saving accounts, as well as CDs in both
Bank of America (BOA) and Charter Oak
Federal Credit Union (COFCU) accounts.
Tom Conners accepted the designation.
A letter of Designation will be issued by
the Base Commander.
From now on the Base Treasurer and
Base Financial Manager will be on the
following accounts; Chapter Account and
all CD accounts in BOA and COFCU.
The Treasurer, Base Financial Manager
and Groton Base Bar Permittee will be
on the ATM Building Fund Account. The
Bar Accounts will remain separate from
the Chapter Accounts and will be handled by the Groton Base Bar Permittee.
The Membership/PayPal Account is part
of the Chapter Account. The ViceCommander, or his designee, is responsible for the membership/PayPal portion
of the membership/chapter account.
Mike Munhall has been appointed by the
Vice-Commander as his designee for the
membership account. To this end the
Vice-Commanders designee, Mike Mun-
hall, has also been added to the Groton
Base Chapter account.
My goal is to make the Base Accounts transparent to the Base members. As noted in Part (b) of the ByLaws governing the Treasurer position, I
am responsible for an annual audit of
the records and fiancés. I need a finance committee to be assembled made
up of base members that do not handle
any money or on any committee that will
handle money. I need five volunteers.
Currently I have one volunteer, Mary
Harrison. I need four more. This is a
great opportunity to help out your base.
If anyone is interested please contact
me at [email protected].
I have until the 15th of January to conduct my turn-over audit by myself. After
the 15th of January I will need the Financial Committee stood up and conduct
the yearly audit. The results will be
posted on the Groton Base website and
will be presented in the next newsletter.
I will faithfully represent the Groton
Base members as your new Treasurer
to the best of my abilities. If anyone has
any concerns please e-mail me. Remember, I work for all of the Base members.
Sincerely,
Mark Wiggins
Groton Base Treasurer

CPO Dinning-In
History: Since
the beginning of
organized society
there has been a
military establishment. Regardless
of how simple or
unorganized it
may have been, there have been occasions
when the leaders of that military organization have set themselves down to a dinner
elaborate in service and formal in style. It is
a well known fact that the Roman Legions
held great banquets to celebrate their past
victories or to parade the prizes of their
most recent enterprise.
The term dining-in derives from an old
Viking tradition celebrating great battles
and feasts of heroes by formal ceremony,
which spread to monasteries, early-day
universities and to the military when the
officer's mess was established.
Background: A Dining-In is a formal dinner given by a wing, unit, or organization.
It may honor a departing individual or welcome a new one. It may give recognition
to a dignitary, or to individuals and unit
achievements. Or it may simply be a
pleasant way for individuals on a station to
get better acquainted. Other than military
women, it is a stag affair.
Mess members wear the prescribed uniform for their services and civilian guests
wear black tie or what is stated in the invitations. Medals are worn by all members
of the mess and the military guest, including retired personnel.
The primary elements of a Dining-In are: a
formal setting, a fine meal, the camaraderie of the members of the mess, traditional
toasts to the President and the military
services, martial music and the attendance of an honored guest.
CPO Dining In 2011: The 2011 CPO Dining In is scheduled for Friday 18 Feb commencing about 1800 at the Groton Inn and
Suites. Cost: $40.00 dollars for GACPOA
non members and $30.00 for members.
Tickets are available at the club. ALL INTERESTED MEMBERS WHO ARE RETIRED CPOs, SCPOs or MCPOs ARE
INVITED TO ATTEND. For additional info
please contact the Base Commander.

Newsletter Editor: Mike Munhall
Newsletter Donations: Thank you to all the
members who've made recent donations to
the newsletter fund or sponsored a Boat to
receive our newsletter. Newsletter donations are always appreciated as they defray
the cost of printing “Boat Notes”.
“Boat Notes “ Online: Thank you to the
many people who voluntarily receive the
newsletter online from the internet without a
mailed copy, further reducing the cost of
printing and mailing. The newsletter is
posted on our web page as a .pdf file. Over
800 members out of 1650 who have internet
capabilities, receive Boat Notes by email
only and not via the U.S. Mail. Imagine the
cost savings to the base if all our members
who have internet capability received it via
the internet.
The biggest advantage to you in receiving
the newsletter online is that you can read
Boat Notes at the same time that we send it
to the printers, which is at least 2–3 weeks
ahead of those receiving it via the postal
system. It's also an easy way of letting other
potential new members see what SubVets
Groton Base is all about.
The newsletter is posted on our webpage
at http://subvetsgroton.org just click on “Boat
Notes” on the top bar. If you want receive
the newsletter by e-mail only, contact me at
[email protected].
Mailing Addresses: A lot of effort goes into
writing and mailing this newsletter. If your
mailing address should change please let us
know about it as soon as possible. The importance of this cannot be overemphasized. In an
effort to cut costs we will no longer request
“Return Service” for the newsletter. The sole
responsibility for correct addresses is with the
members. More important than the cost is the
fact that when you don’t get your newsletter
you miss information about your organization,
and we lose contact with you. For all renewals,
address changes, and updates of information
that you have, please use the form on the back
page or contact the Membership Committee.
“Boat Notes” Sponsorship: The cost of printing and mailing Boat Notes is one of our larger
expenses for Groton Base. To reduce this cost
to the membership and to stretch Base Dollars
we offer members and local community businesses to sponsor the newsletter by placing
their business cards in a space 2” x 3” throughout our newsletter. Examples can be found in
this edition.
Our newsletter goes out to over 2,200 members, from Maine to Florida, Connecticut to
Hawaii, and around the world. The cost of
sponsorship for our newsletter is $50 per edition or $150 per year (4 editions). If you are
interested in becoming one of our sponsors
please contact me at [email protected], (860) 625-6843 or call
the Club House at (86) 445-5262. Leave a
message with your contact information and I
will contact you.

Boat Not Homeported In Groton
Boat Sponsorship Program: Our organization and our Base only exist because of our
members. The best way we have to keep
members and to recruit new ones is to keep
them informed and let them know what is going
on in the organization and the Base. One of
the best ways we do this is with our newsletter
“Boat Notes”. All of our members receive it
by mail or e-mail and it is posted on our website. But how do prospective members get to
see it you ask?
In Groton our largest pool of prospective
members are the Sailors and employees on
SUBASE. Specifically the submarines home
ported here in Groton and the Commands that
support them. To try and reach this group we
have a “Boat Sponsorship Program” that helps
send copies of our newsletter to these boats
and support Commands. The program’s goal
is to send six copies of the newsletter to each
boat and command. The CO and COB are
also sent a letter explaining who we are and
who has sponsored them. We also encourage
them to distribute the copies in the Wardroom,
Goat Locker, and Crews Mess, this way we get
to the whole crew.
To sponsor a boat it is $10 per copy for one
year. You can see below the list of Commands
already sponsored and the ones that still need
some sponsors.
If you have sponsored a boat and or Command in the past we will be contacting you to
remind you that your sponsorship has expired.
We hope you will renew your sponsorship

Submarine Excellence At SUBVETS Groton Base
This article provides highlights of some of
the Submarine Excellence from among our
local commands, and Active Duty membership at Groton Base.
This quarter’s recognition for Submarine
Excellence goes to all of our Shipmates in the
Groton area who were selected as either Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY) or Sailor of the
Year for 2010.
Getting selected to this group is no easy
accomplishment. It takes a lot of hard work,
dedication and professionalism to achieve this
status. The JSOY and SOY recipients represent the very best Sailors from within our Submarine Force. Although they go on to further
competitions at the COMSUBGRU TWO and
COMSUBLANT levels, to select the best Sailors at those levels there are no losers in this
group. Every one of them is a winner.
The area JSOY winners are:ET2(SS)

SFLM Docents: Gary Schmid
DOCENTS
NEEDED!
To make our
scheduling easier and to enhance the visitors experience at the
Submarine Force Library & Museum
(SFLM) and the HISTORIC SHIP
NAUTILUS WE NEED MORE DOCENTS!!
Are you Qualified to be a docent???
What is a docent really??? Well according to several sources: In the US
docents are individuals, trained to further the public understanding of the
historical collections of an institution.
They are normally volunteers and act
as guides and greeters at museums,
etc.
In reality for us at SUBVETS Groton
Base it is a great way to share your
submarine experience with an eager,
interested audience at the. Watches
are only for 4 hours and you can
stand as few as one or as many as
you like per month.
The intent of the program is to assist the SFLM by having a smiling
face at the door. Once you have the
watch it’s up to you what you want to
do in passing on your personal
knowledge and experiences to the
public.
To answer the question of “Are
you Qualified to be a docent???”
Here are the pre-requisites to be a
docent: Interest, Time on your hands,
friendly outgoing personality, and a desire to help out. You do not even have
to be Qualified in Submarines, a SUBVET, or a veteran to be a docent. We
have several non SUBVETS as docents, and even some spouses who do
it with their husbands.
As Submariners, YOU ARE THE EXPERTS!!! It’s really what you make of it.
So why not give the Docent Coordinator, Gary Schmid a call, IT IS REALLY
EASY

(SQRP)?
The SQRP reenforces the significance and
importance of being Qualified in Submarines to your Sailors.
When we received our Dolphins that was a
significant milestone for each of us. That
was when we were fully accepted as true
Submariners. We know that Dolphins are
not given away. They are earned as the
result of hard work, studying, and demonstrated performance.
Being Qualified in Submarines has the
same prestige and recognition as it was
when Submarine Dolphins were first authorized in the early 1900s.
At our SQRP the command brings both
Enlisted and Officer Personnel who recently completed their Qualification in Submarines to one of our monthly meetings.
We explain to them in the presence of our
members the significance of their Qualifications. How they are now part of the legacy of the Submarine Force and part of a
much larger fraternal group of “Brothers of
the Phin” consisting of thousands of Submariners who have completed the same
Qualifications that they have recently completed.
As we explain this, your Sailors are looking
out into the faces of SUBVETS who have
served in Submarines from before WWII,
to the present. It is easily several hundred
years of Submarine experience there who
appreciate the new guys who have taken
their places at the pointy end of the spear.
We emphasize that Submariners may
have Qualified on different classes of Submarines, but the high standards required
to get their dolphins are still the same. We
then tell them that it is now their responsibility to train and Qualify those who follow
them. The program is purely about recognition for them and how significant their
Qualification in Submarines really is.
We would like the opportunity to recognize
your Sailors as well with our SQRP, but in
order to do so we need your support and
involvement.
What we need is for you or one of your
Chief Petty Officers to contact us that you
would like to recognize crew members
who recently Qualified in Submarines at
an upcoming meeting. We need a list of
the individuals including their full names,
and Rates/Ranks at least one week prior
to the meeting that we will be recognizing
your Sailors so that way we can prepare a
certificate for them.
On meeting night, the crew members
show up before the meeting start at 1830.
Usually the COB, CO, other crew members and family accompany them. We
conduct the SQRP at the very start of the
meeting. The CO and COB also say a few
words if desired. Then we all sound off our
names, and boat and year that we Qualified.
When the Sailors hear some of the Qualification years it really hits them. We are usually
completed by 1900 allowing all to either depart, or to enjoy our facilities downstairs. Any
one is welcome to stay for the duration of the
rest of the meeting if desired. We look forward to recognizing your Sailors.
We conducted an SQRP ceremony for
USS PITTSBURGH (SSN 720) at our 06
December meeting. The following individuals
were recognized for the completion of Submarine Qualifications during PITTSBURGH’s
last deployment: CSSN(SS) Zackary M.

Program continues to
bring comfort and joy to
Children in and around
Connecticut who are
fighting for their health. When we make the
Children “Honorary Submariners” we share
our knowledge about Submarines and Submariners with them, their parents and staff at
the institutions we visit. The feedback we get
lets us know that our efforts are appreciated
and that we are advancing the USSVI’s
Creed.
K4K Visit to Connecticut Hospice
On 14 hours notice, Ron Grabowski and I
visited the Connecticut Hospice in Branford
Connecticut. We visited with a 9 year old girl
patient and her family for an hour and a half.
It was a special, life affirming experience that
words can’t describe.
The mother was extremely appreciative of
our efforts to bring comfort and joy to her
daughter.
The staff later informed me that the mother,
the patients 8 year old sister, and 9 year old
cousin, who were also made “Honorary Submariners”, needed our visit as much as, if not
more than, the young patient
The staff expressed a desire to have us
visit when Children are there and asked us to
also include adult patients in a group setting,
if possible. I informed them that we would be
honored to and that I would make a K4K visit
to their facility any time they want, on a moment’s notice.
K4K visit to Yale New Haven Children’s
Hospital on Veterans Day
Paul Dillon, Paul Grammer, Mike DeLeo, Roy
Wilkes, John Craggs, my wife Jackie and I
visited the Yale New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH) in New Haven, on Veterans
Day.
This was the second Veterans Day visit to
YNHCH. After the success of the first visit in
2009, we agreed with the YNHCH staff that, in
addition to the other times during the year we
visit YNHCH, we will make a tradition of visiting on Veterans Day.
Approximately 40 Children were made
"Honorary Submariners" and presented
with framed "Honorary Submariner" certifi-
cates. The Children ranged in age from 2
weeks to 18 years old. Photos taken of each
Child with the Sub Vets were printed, pasted
onto K4K forms and presented to the Child
or parent.
Many of the parents, a score of YNHCH
employees and visiting dignitaries, as well as
the older Children, thanked us for our service
to America and, what we are doing for Children with our K4K Program.
We visited Children who were OutPatients at the Yale New Haven Smilow
Cancer Hospital, Children in the Activity
Room, and Children in their rooms.
In the Activity Room we shared information
about Submarine life and conducted a spirited and extended question and answer period with Children, parents & family as well
as staff. The Children were then made
“Honorary Submariners” and, presented with
K4K offerings including photos taken with us.
K4K Visit to Child Psychiatric Unit @ The
Hospital of Saint Raphael
Paul Dillon, Tom Russell, Jack Gallimore,
Buzz Merrin my wife Jackie and I brought
our K4K Program to Children in the Hospital
of Saint Raphael’s Inpatient Child Psychiatric Unit (HSR), in New Haven.
The HSR unit is a unique facility that provides Child Psychiatric Emergency Services
(CPES) in an acute inpatient unit, treating
Children who range in age 2–17 years. This
was our first K4K visit to HSR and it was a
huge success!
Frequent future visits have been requested by the Staff; and, the Patient Care
Manager for the “Outpatient” component of
CPES requested that the Sub Vets visit the
Children in that unit as well.
The youngest Child made an “Honorary Submariner” was 4 years old, the oldest was 17.
After our presentation about submarines and
submariners to the Children, staff and Hospital administrators, we conducted a question
and answer period. The questions came
rapid fire and before we knew it the schedule
required us to start the “Honorary Submariner” presentations. Photos were taken of
each Child being presented their certificates
(in their K4K Caps or Doo Rags, with Big
Smiles), printed and presented to the Child.
As we were packing up to leave, many of the
Children came back to the Day Room and
presented us with Thank You cards they
made themselves!
Remaining 2010 K4K Visits
We will visit the Connecticut Children’s
Medical Center (CCMC) in Hartford, on
December 15th. This will be our 5th visit to
CCMC and the staff continues to request
that we visit the Children there as often as
we can.

USSVI 47th Anniversary Celebration
Come celebrate the USSVI Groton
Base 47th Anniversary Weekend where it
all started. Groton Base the “First and
Finest”, is proud to host the ninth annual
Anniversary Weekend. It will be held in
the “Submarine Capital of the World”,
Groton CT 5-7 May 2011. This event is a
great opportunity for all submariners to
come back to where we all got started, to
see the advances we have made in Submarine technology, and to perpetuate the
memories of all Submariners.
In addition to celebrating the Anniversary of our great organization and having a great time in sharing camaraderie
with our Shipmates, the other purpose of
this event is to serve as the principal fundraiser for the Groton Base Scholarship
program. There are opportunities to provide sponsorships, and donations on the
registration form. We will also be generating a program book as another fundraiser
for this event. The program book is discussed elsewhere in this newsletter.
Although we are still in the planning
stages we have registration forms available in this newsletter. Below is the basic
Schedule of Events. Other additional
events may be added as we move down
the road.

One new feature we are adding to
this year’s banquet is the opportunity for
members and attendees to sponsor students from Naval Submarine School to
join us at the banquet to bring the past
together with our future in our celebration
of SUBVETS. The cost to sponsor a SUBSCHOOL Student to join us at the banquet is $25.00 each.
For more details and a registration package visit the Groton Base website at http://
www.subvetsgroton.org. If you have specific questions contact John Carcioppolo
direct at Cell: (860) 514-7064; or email at
[email protected].
Club House Clean-up
Thanks to our shipmates on the Saturday Morning Cleanup Crew, who continually donate time to clean our clubhouse
and keep it looking good for our members
and guests. The club belongs to the
membership, but cleanup of the club is
done by only a small handful of hardworking, dedicated volunteers. The crew
we owe our thanks to are John Wagner,
Mark Stern, Rob Davis, Marty Glavin,
George Torkelson, Ed Russell, Tom Connors, Mike Munhall, and our snowbirds,
Ray Nott and Carl Dahlman.
Cleanup starts around 7am and is usually completed by 10am so it is done for
our 11am opening. In addition to the
usual Saturday cleanups we schedule two
Field Days during the year.
We can always use more volunteers
on a regular basis to clean on Saturdays.
You don’t have to be there every Saturday, just when you can. Extra bodies are
always helpful, especially during the winter. We are the only Base with its own
Club House. Please pitch in to keep your
club clean and looking good for all of us.

2011 Groton Base Nominations For Elections
This is an election
year for us at SUBVETS Groton Base.
PW Louthain has been
appointed as the chairman of the Nominations committee for
this year’s Base Elections and Chris Callahan will be assisting
him. Their job is to collect Nominations for
the different positions available, and to verify the eligibility and desire of the potential
candidates. When the Nominations close
on 1 April he provides a list of those candidates who have indicated their willingness
to serve to the Base Secretary, and he
takes care of the ballot and voting.
Nearly every USSVI Base suffers from
the same malady; a dearth of volunteers to
fill leadership positions. You would not think
that would be a problem at Groton Base
with over 2000 members. It does not take a
Naval Officer or CPO to fill any of these
positions, only someone willing to serve.
However, you might think that those who
were Officers and Chiefs would be at the
head of the volunteer line. You might think
that Groton Base would have at least four
or five Members vying for every position
available. You might think with over 1,400
hundred members residing in New London
County we might need a NCAA type of
Bracket elimination system just to get our
ballot down to manageable size.
It is your Base; it is time for you
to get involved. You may be just waiting
on someone to ask you to run. You might
even think it is disrespectful to those currently in office to show an interest in running. It is not disrespectful to volunteer
(self nominate. I highly recommend that
you step up to the plate and keep our
Base in good standing. Accept your
nomination or if you have not been nominated, volunteer to serve.
The call for nominations for USSVI
Groton Base Elected positions which
include the Base Commander, ViceCommander, Secretary, Treasurer and
all members of the Board of Trustees
will be issued at the January monthly
meeting. If you are a member in good
standing, you may nominate yourself or
any other Primary Groton Base Member
for any of the elected positions listed
above.
Nominations, when called for, may
be made from the floor at the meeting.
Nominations shall be submitted by any
member in good standing to the chairman of the Nominating Committee on or
before 1 April 2011 when nominations
will be closed. To be placed on the ballot
by the Base Secretary a nominee must
sign a statement saying they agree to
serve if elected nominations shall be
accepted upon the oral or written consent
of the nominee that he accepts the nominations and will serve if elected. The
qualifications of the nominee, not to exceed 100 words, shall accompany nominations. The Nomination Committee
will request those statements from
your nominees for you.
Upon receipt of all nominations as
aforesaid, the officer conducting the
nominations shall have published in the
Base publication the names and qualifications, in alphabetical order, of all candidates properly nominated, at least thirty
(30) Days prior to the monthly meeting.
You can find all the information on
Nominations and Voting in the USSVI
Groton Base Bylaws on our website at
http://subvetsgroton.org under Base
documents.
In addition to nominations from the
floor at the meeting, nominations may be
made to the committee by email [email protected], by mail to
the club Atn: Nominations, or by leaving
a nomination at the club.
PW or Chris may be contacted for any
questions or assistance or to provide any
descriptions of the positions being
elected either via email at or by phone

Groton Base Scholarship Golf Tournament Sponsorship
Our Annual Anniversary Celebration/
Golf Tournament serves as the principal
fundraiser for our Scholarship Program.
Last year was a record year where between the golf sponsors and the anniversary raffles about $20,000 was raised. It
would be great to top last year’s record
amount of donations.
The Golf Tournament Committee is
already working very hard seeking sponsorships for this year’s tournament. We have
sent sponsorship letters to many local businesses asking them to sponsor tees or
greens. Sponsorship letters are also being
sent to every Base Commander in USSVI.
But before we can depend on outside
sources to support our Golf Tournament,
we have to depend on our own membership first.
Sponsors can be individuals or the
sponsorship can come from a group or
another organization that you may be a
member of. If you own a company, sponsorship can come from your company. If
you know someone who would be interested in sponsoring a tee or a green, you
can certainly pass this on. Remember,
sponsorships are tax deductible.
There are a variety of different levels of sponsorship available. Please see
the second page of the Anniversary Registration form in this newsletter for all
levels of sponsorship.
If you do not want to be a sponsor
for the Golf Tournament but would like to
send a donation that is fine too. Donations can be made online at the club or
by mail to the club.
Remember there is no donation
too small. They all count. Your support
and donations are appreciated and go
towards helping our membership build
the pot and give meaningful scholarships
to children, grandchildren, and stepchildren of members of SUBVETS Groton
Base. Having a scholarship program for
Groton Base kids is a great thing. But
you can’t give out Scholarship’s without
funds.
The Groton Base Scholarship Fund
is established under the USSV Charitable Foundation, making all donations
charitable donations which are tax deductible under IRS Code 501(c)(3). Many
companies you work for or retired from
have charity programs in place; if you
make a donation to a qualified charitable
organization such as ours, they will
match your donation. That doubles anything you might consider sending.
If you are interested in being a Golf
Tournament sponsor or donating, please
either bring in or mail your donation to
U.S. SUBVETS; Attn: Scholarship Chairman; 40 School Street; Groton, CT
06340. The check should be made out to
U.S.
Submarine Veterans Inc. and marked for

section.

The HOLLAND Club Report: Phil Marshall
Shortly after the New
Year those members
being inducted into the
HOLLAND CLUB in
2011 will start to receive correspondence
from us regarding the
ceremony. The Ceremony is scheduled for
Saturday 04 June 2011. If you Qualified
in Submarines in 1961 or earlier, that
will be the day you are inducted into the
prestigious HOLLAND CLUB.
The initial correspondence will be
requesting biographical information so
that we can compare it/update it in the
National Data Base, and use it in our
HOLLAND CLUB presentation. The
second correspondence will be for your
guest list of all who are attending. The
more information you provide about
yourself the better the presentation will
be. We will also be requesting pictures
of you to be used in the presentation.
Preferably a picture or two of when you
were in the service. You can either
send those pictures to us in the mail, or
via the internet to [email protected].
Again the better the picture the better
you will look in the presentation. All pictures mailed will be returned at the ceremony.
With the recent changes to the USSVI
National Constitution and Bylaws it
made an additional group of members
eligible for the HOLLAND CLUB that
were not previously eligible before.
However, it also added a requirement
that those who were not Life Members
must continue to pay annual National
Dues. Failure to pay annual National
Dues for those individuals even though
they are members of the HOLLAND CLUB
will result in them being dropped from the
organization. We strongly recommend that
those Regular members going into the
HOLLAND CLUB consider upgrading to
Life Membership so that you don’t ever
have to worry about National Dues again.
.
All those going into the HOLLAND
CLUB with Groton Base must have paid
their 2011 Base Dues to be completely
eligible. Once all of you are in the HOLLAND CLUB there is no longer a requirement for Base Dues.
The following are the 64 names that we
show going into the HOLLAND CLUB this
year. If your name is in red bold print or
has an * you have not renewed your dues
for 2011 as of 08 Dec 2010 and you must
renew to be fully eligible for the 2011

“Perpetuating The Memory Of Our Shipmates”
For the last nine years for Christmas we
have been adding to our SUBVETS Memorial Christmas Tree. We started with
Christmas Balls for each of the lost boats.
We then offered to the membership that if
they wanted to donate a Christmas Ball in
memory or in honor
of some one or in
honor of a Boat they
served on they could
do so.
We have also
placed a new decoration on the tree for
each Member who
had gone on Eternal
Patrol during the
past year. The tree
has become a living
memorial to all of our
Shipmates and helps
“Perpetuate their
memories”.
