EMQ: 100-150
scenarios
S. Ayhan CALISKAN!
•  2. EMQ: These one lead in, 8-20 options and 3-4 cases (with one correct answer) type
questions could mainly test the learners' (students', candidate's)
- Factual knowledge
- Comprehension
- Application of knowledge and
- Problem solving (or clinical reasoning) abilities.
Although MCQs and EMQs are testing the same levels of cognitive (knowledge) domain,
EMQs are testing much higher levels (mostly clinical reasoning) as they have case scenarios in
the EMQ sets.
•
Main advantages of EMQs: Testing higher levels of knowledge, especially clinical
reasoning. Less possibility (<%20) to guess the correct answer by chance, easy to mark and
results can be announced as fast as MCQs.
Main disadvantages of EMQs: Difficult to write, relatively new for both candidates and
faculty members.
