May & June have been busy & productive. Our ongoing gig at Country Crest was handled in May by our newest group the
Johnson Farms Bluegrass Band & the June performance was by Rayburn & The Coerced (Rayburn McDonald, Allison
Woodruff & Teresa Ward). In May The Riverside String Band (Larry Jendro, Gary Lindberg, Teddie Cochran, & Scott Lawrence) with Wild Bill Chilton performed at the Bidwell Bar Days & Rayburn & The Coerced (Rayburn McDonald, Allison
Woodruff, Mary McCluskey, Teresa Ward, Susan Stone & Steve Koch). As a special, Merrily Stover provided Old Time Favorites & Lawrence Brothers, Larry Jendro, & The Three Lawrences (Scott Lawrence & his two brothers) provided a Bluegrass Hoedown as Friday evening entertainment at Country Crest in May. Merrily Stover got rave reviews & was invited back
(it’s that winning smile of hers & her wonderful music). In May the City of Oroville put on a Fun Run which turned out to be
just that FUN. The Riverside String Band (Larry Jendro, Merrily Stover, Gary Lindberg, Teddie Cochran, & Tom Turk) then
Wild Bill Chilton & Rayburn McDonald took turns leading them in some tunes. The Threshing Bee at Patrick Ranch had 1
hour performances by Billie Roberts, Everett Conniss, Leon Ranney, & The Riverside String Band (Tom Turk, Scott Lawrence, Gary Lindberg, & Teddie Cochran) played then Teddie Cochran & Friends did a set including original tunes by Teddie
Cochran. Rayburn & The Coerced (Rayburn McDonald, Allison Woodruff, Susan Stone, & Jimi Beeler) entertained at the
Operating Engineers Annual Picnic in June. We are always looking for groups to play for different events so if you would
like to join us performing in the community, please give me a call. Our Fiddle Group Workshops will continue during the
summer. In addition, we have group music lessons immediately before the workshops. We have Banjo lessons on the 1st Monday of each month & we have initiated Mandolin lessons on the 3rd Monday. Come join us, it is a fun time & there is much to
be learned. Our Jams on the 4th Sunday of the month seem to have grown since our move to the Feather River Senior Center
the music is great & the audience is even greater. So, come on and join us, bring your favorite instrument or just sit and listen
either way you will have a great time. Don’t forget about the food…there is some great eating & fun going on at these Jams
every month.
District 2
The Fresno County Sportsmen's Club was the venue for this year's District 2 Youth Fiddle Contest last June. The
sportsmen allowed district 2 members to share their outdoor barbecue held on the south bank of the San Joaquin River. In turn, the fiddle club used sportsmen club's large, rustic barn for the contest.
Pee Wee division winners were Kevin Crotty (1st) of Oakhurst and Ava Etulain, (2nd) of Hanford.
Junior-junior division winners were Elsa Crotty (1st) of Oakhurst, Abi Halsey (2nd) of Hanford, Paulina Medina
(3rd) of Hanford, Benjamin Harris (4th) of Hanford, Celestyna Mills (5th) of Hanford and Madison Horowitz (6th) of
Hanford.
Junior division winners were Jack Kinney of Sanger, Ella Campbell (2nd) of Coarsegold, Isabela Medina (3rd) of
Hanford and Dominic Castro (4th) of Lemoore.
The judges were three young men with ties to the club that go way back: Jimmy Parnell, David Pruitt and Jared
Dean.
District 2 extra:
Reaford Shirley is back home in Selma after spending a few weeks in rehabilitation following a blood clot in his leg.
A memorial service was held July 21 for Bill Phelps who died recently. Carl Parnel, Tom Riddle, Dalisy Johnson, and Nathan
Brown did the musical honors.

Fiddle Friends,
The Cloverdale Fiddle Festival (www.CloverdaleFiddles.com ) held last May 4 and 5th was a lot of fun. We had several of
our District 5 members attend the festival.
Eric Anderson was very busy as a contestant and accompanist. Eric competed in Adult Old-Time Fiddling, Adult Texas
Style and Adult Guitar. Eric also accompanied many fiddlers, including Ben Cleland who placed 1st in the Junior OldTime Fiddle competition - way to go Ben. One of the tunes Ben played was Boatmen -- If I had my eyes closed I would
have thought I was listening to Eric play the tune. Ben was a really good competent fiddler as usual. It’s great to see our
District 5 members participate in the events and meet fellow musicians from all over our state. Eric also accompanied
Bruce Gobel in the Old-Time Style - Senior division.
Doug Dempster was there wandering around with his autoharp joining in many of the jams in and around the building at
the Citrus Fairgrounds. The jams are really great -- a gathering of talented folks from all over the state. Anyone who enjoys fiddle and bluegrass jamming will find plenty of enjoyment! For musicians these events are often the only times that
folks from far and wide can get together and renew friendships and make great music together and teach each other new
licks.
There are two stages, the Main stage and the Jamming stage on which many fine performances are held. The festival
had a number of great California bands on hand to entertain the crowds on both stages throughout the days, bands such
as the Kathy Kallik Band, the Oak Grove String Band, The Roustabouts, Dan Levenson and Bob Carlin.
The Cloverdale Fiddle Festival is an annual fund raising event held by the Cloverdale Historical Society
www.cloverdalehistory.org during the month of May. The continuing purpose of the Cloverdale Old Time Fiddle Festival is
to help preserve the historic fiddling culture and tunes; to help develop audience appreciation and understanding; and to
acknowledge today’s musicians who are carrying forward this traditional art form.

After the fiddle finals, 1st place in Mandolin, Banjo & Guitar will compete in a playoff for the Prize Guitar. Each contestant will play one turne
of their choice, but NOT a tune that they played earlier in the competitions. The judges will mark their scores and the scorekeepers will add up
the scores. The contestant with the highest score will be awarded the Bill Whitfield Prize Guitar. Guitar can be won only once in a 3-year period. If the winner is in this position, the guitar will go to the second place player.
