A MESSAGE FROM OUR CO-CHAIRS
Amanda Schwenke
June Smith
“SO THAT NO ONE FACES CANCER ALONE.”
What powerful words! These seven words define the Cancer Support Community
of Philadelphia (CSCP) as the vibrant community it has been for thousands. Cancer
was treated as a physical health issue alone for many years. In 1993, when the then
Wellness Community of Philadelphia came to be, the mental health component became
available for more people than ever in the Greater Philadelphia area. It helped to
enhance the lives of survivors and their loved ones. The services provided became a
crucial addition to treatment for people affected by cancer.
For 20 years, The Wellness Community, renamed the Cancer Support Community of
Philadelphia in 2011, has been at the forefront of caring for and supporting those
diagnosed with cancer, their families, and their caregivers. Not once has anyone been
turned away due to lack of funds. Not once has anyone who comes to CSCP been left on
their own. And not once has anyone at CSCP been turned away because their burden
was too great.
The philanthropic history of CSCP is a strong one. We are here tonight not only to have
fun (and we promise you that we will!!!) but to raise awareness of the mission of CSCP
and to raise funds for this special community. We are asking you to open your mind
and your heart. Our need is great, but our commitment is greater. Thanks very much
for your support tonight, and tomorrow.
All the best,
Amanda Schwenke and June Smith

and volunteers — in their endeavor to comfort and care for people with cancer and
their families.
MEDAL OF COURAGE
JUAN M. TORRES
The Medal of Courage is given to the Cancer Support Community
of Philadelphia member who embodies the spirit of hope in the
face of cancer. This person serves as an inspiration in the struggle
to understand the impact of cancer.
MEDAL OF INSPIRATION
KIM KUBEK KIRKPATRICK, MD
The Medal of Inspiration is given to a corporation, foundation or
individual for exemplary efforts to help people with cancer and
their loved ones to improve the quality of their lives by providing
better resources for them.
RIDGELAND AWARD
KEITH MORGAN AND THE MORGAN FAMILY

of Philadelphia to improve the lives of people with cancer and
their loved ones. This award is being given for only the fifth
time in CSCP’s 20-year history.

MEDAL OF COURAGE AWARD
JUAN M. TORRES
Juan M. Torres and his family came to Philadelphia from their native
Puerto Rico in 1952. His family’s story was typical of the many that
came to this country looking for opportunity. He was the first of his
family to graduate from college, earning a Bachelor’s degree from
Temple University.
Juan M. Torres & Ann O’Donnell
In 1982 Juan joined SEPTA, working 28 years in many capacities including
assistant general manager for Public and Government Affairs and for
Business Services. On December 18, 2008 he was diagnosed with stomach
cancer. He recalls that “the emotional impact left me numb and helpless.
Cancer came crushing down on me.”
By January 2009, Juan was on chemotherapy and radiation for five weeks, followed by a gastroesophagectomy on April 15, 2009. The chemotherapy, radiation and surgery dealt with the cancer but the side
effects were devastating. Says Juan: “Those were the dark months. After the surgery I could not eat. We
made dozens of trips to emergency rooms and spent days at the hospital with no solution in sight, but
my wife, Ann, would not let me give up.” While his physical condition slowly improved, he continued
to be paralyzed with depression. His wife’s sister, Jean, a breast cancer survivor who had attended the
Cancer Support Community of Philadelphia’s support group, convinced Juan to seek their help.
Says Juan: “I remember my first day with the support group as if it were yesterday. I walked in not
knowing what to expect. After hearing other cancer stories I realized that compared to their ordeals,
I was fortunate. I walked out of that first session with the veil of darkness lifted, filled with hope for a
second chance at life. I still had problems but I can say that many of my medical mysteries were solved
inside that support group. What makes CSCP special is the emotional and physical support they offer
in all aspects of treatment and recovery.”
“It has been three years since I first came to CSCP. I have chosen photography as my new passion and
I am a member of the Dragon Boat Team. I am getting back on my feet and for this I owe much gratitude
to the Cancer Support Community of Philadelphia.”

MEDAL OF INSPIRATION AWARD
KIM KUBEK KIRKPATRICK, MD
Kim Kubek Kirkpatrick, MD
Kim Kubek Kirkpatrick, MD, a leading expert in breast cancer detection and
diagnosis, is the director of imaging at the Diagnostic Breast Center in Newtown
Square, Pennsylvania. Since completing her fellowship in 1987, she has dedicated
her professional life to diagnosing breast cancer. She is unique in her field in that
her singular focus as a radiologist is the interpretation of mammograms and
breast ultrasounds. She not only interprets over 8,000 studies per year, but she
also personally meets with every patient in consultation. Her medical practice
offers digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast health (which includes the
instruction of breast self exams) and genetic testing for those women at high risk.
This has given her patients the opportunity to determine a predisposition to breast
and ovarian cancer in order to initiate proper medical and surgical management.
Dr. Kubek attended Miami University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1978. She
received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine in 1982. She completed
her residency training in 1986 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, in diagnostic radiology.
She was also selected for Fellowship training in women’s imaging with specialization in mammography
at the completion of her residency. She has written and presented clinical and research papers about
breast ultrasound and ultrasound guided breast biopsies. She is a longtime member of CSCP’s Professional
Advisory Board.
Patty Isen, emeritus board member at the Cancer Support Community of Philadelphia, knew where to
turn every year for her routine mammogram. However, the one she had in May 2011 was anything but
routine. Says Patty: “When I was first diagnosed, the malignancy was incredibly small and scattered
throughout the breast. I had no breast cancer in my family history so I was not worried. Without Kim’s
precise eye, my cancer could have gone unseen. I was fortunate that she was so diligent. She handled
my diagnosis with such kindness and empathy as she does with all of her patients. This diagnosis came
while I was planning a 50th birthday celebration and leaving the next day for a vacation. The way she
handled the process of telling me what was happening was incredibly thoughtful. She was adamant
that I get checked when I returned. She explained the serious nature of it but didn’t want me to worry.”
Kim Kubek Kirkpatrick is a most worthy Medal of Inspiration honoree.

RIDGELAND AWARD
KEITH MORGAN AND THE MORGAN FAMILY
Chair emeritus Keith Morgan and his family have
been involved with the Cancer Support Community
of Philadelphia since its inception in 1993. His
mother, Suzanne, had passed away from cancer
the previous year, and he was looking for a way to
honor her life and the wonderful contributions that
she and his father, Robert, had made to numerous
local causes. Keith is a founding board member
and served as board co-chair beginning in 1998.
It was through a contribution from The Suzanne
Keith Morgan
Suzanne & Robert Morgan
Morgan Foundation in 1996 that provided CSCP
with its current home in Fairmount Park, The Suzanne Morgan Center at Ridgeland.
Keith holds a BA Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania and is a seasoned senior business executive with over 30 years of leadership experience covering many aspects of management, business development and marketing, primarily focusing on franchise management, both as a franchisor and a franchisee.
Keith spent most of his career with AAMCO Transmissions, serving as its CEO from 1992 to 2006. He led
AAMCO to record growth with over $500 million in annual sales through 750 locations across 47 states
and Canada. Prior to joining AAMCO, he worked at Master Lease Corporation, a national equipment
leasing company, from 1983 to 1991 and served as its president from 1987 to 1991.
In 2010, Keith and his partner and cousin, Brian Zaslow, became area developers for Krispy Kreme
Doughnuts with exclusive rights to operate stores in 14 counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and
Delaware. Since then they have opened stores in Havertown, Bensalem, Northeast Philadelphia, and
Collingswood, New Jersey with plans to open another 15 to 20 locations over the next five years.
When asked about his reaction to receiving the award, Keith shared: “We are honored that CSCP chose
to honor me, my family, and The Suzanne Morgan Foundation with the ‘Ridgeland Award.’ I know if my
parents were alive today they would be thrilled to know that so many with cancer and their loved ones
have been served at CSCP, all at no charge to them. What a fantastic tribute to them and a recognition
of the importance of giving back.”
Keith lives in Haverford with his wife, Alixandra, and three sons, Grayson, William and Henry.

Ken Bookman
CSCP Member — In His Own Words
My cancer is ocular melanoma. I’d like to think that I had ocular melanoma, past tense. But
the best I can say is that I now have no evidence of disease. My ophthalmologist tentatively
diagnosed me a little more than a year ago. Two days later, a specialist confirmed that
diagnosis, and six days after that, I had an eye removed... You take it one scan at a time. At
the beginning, I pretty quickly recognized that I had become a basket case and would need
some kind of help. I had no idea what form that help might take, but fortunately, (my wife)
Ruth is a major Googler. Neither of us had ever heard of the Cancer Support Community,
but she stumbled across it in the course of her Internet meanderings, and it sounded very
good to both of us. So we came in for an initial chat. We were impressed. As we looked over
information about the organization, we each saw a group that sounded good. One group
was for caregivers, and Ruth began attending that group. The other was for people who had
received a cancer diagnosis, and I began attending that one.
That was almost a year ago. I’m still attending. Different people come to this group with
different needs. My main mission was to learn how to live in the here and now, to concern
myself with today and not with tomorrow. This is a work in progress. I’ve come a long way, but
I’m not there yet. Most dazzling to me is the group itself. The people in it are phenomenal,
with an empathy that probably can’t be found anywhere else. Everyone “gets it.” All my
thoughts and words about mortality that were sprinkled through my middle-age years
were suddenly not abstract any more. My inability to divine what might lie ahead was
suddenly plunked in a room where other people had already learned that what might lie
ahead just wasn’t very important — that what exists today is what it’s all about.
