The fund offers unique support for organisations within the play sector which, with tailored capacity building support, could turn great ideas from a concept into a reality, positively impacting upon the lives of children and supporting the development of play in Scotland. Aileen Campbell, Minister for Children and Young People, welcomes new charities joining the Go2Play portfolio as part of the Play Strategy Fund. Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh, June 2014. “Play is the universal language of childhood. It’s an activity that happens just for fun but which also has a fundamental role in children’s development. Every child should have the opportunity to play every day. That’s why we are supporting a range of initiatives to give new play opportunities to children and young people around the country, including those with disabilities or from disadvantaged backgrounds.” Aileen Campbell, Minister for Children and Young People, MSP. 13 3D Drumchapel PSF 3D Drumchapel support families in Drumchapel through the provision of many different services and activities, for example parent and toddler activities, learning and development workshops, issue-based workshops, parenting programmes, pre-birth support programme, drop-ins, trips and residential and much much more. Every year SOEC welcome 20,000 people to Centres and visitors include primary and secondary schools, youth groups, music groups, groups with specific needs and many individuals. They are the largest provider of residential outdoor learning in Scotland. With funding and support from the Go2Play Capacity Building Fund, SOEC have piloted a Free Play Project. The project is introducing free play concepts into the structured SOEC programme of activities by creating a free play environment at one of their centres and providing free play training for staff and teachers attending the centre. The pilot programme will be evaluated with a view to implementing a long term model for ‘free play’ as part of the programme work. Through their environmental projects and through a network of 2,000 community groups, they see people – every day, and all across the UK – taking responsibility for their own local environments. With funding and support from Go2Play The Conservation Volunteers were funded to help more families learn and explore play together through their natural play programme, Discover Me, which aims to increase play opportunities by bringing together minority groups, in particular refugee and asylum seeker families, and increasing interest in the environment, their community and science. With funding and support from the Go2Play Capacity Building Fund the Yard has delivered free play activity over two summers at two locations in Edinburgh. The first session took place on Leith Links over two weeks in 2013. This was followed in 2014 by a partnership project with the City of Edinburgh Council in the Muirhouse area of North Edinburgh. This phase of the project saw effective use of a brownfield site to support play and instigated significant community cooperation to target play where it was needed most.
