The 2016 theme wants families to think about when technology is a good thing, and when it is better to turn it off to keep safe. www.childsafetyweek.org.uk CAPT news – www.capt.org.uk April 2016 - 16month old girl has died after getting tangled in a cord of her grandparents window blind. Warn families to double check blinds, tie up looped cords/chains well out of reach, fit safety catches etc. Particularly in children’s bedrooms. March 2016 - Renewed call for families to fit smoke alarms and test them regularly after a two and three year old die in a house fire. Advise families that Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service do home fire risk assessments and fit smoke alarms free of charge! Feb 2016 - Every day 15 under 5’s are admitted to hospital with accidental poisoning! Warn families to keep medicines, tablets, cleaning products, washer or dishwasher tablets/capsules, e-liquid cigarettes and their refills out of the sight and reach of children! Feb 2016 – A Which survey reveals that 1 in 5 grandparents break the law on car seats! They don’t use one at all, or use one that is the wrong type or size for the child! Feb 2016 – Two year old died on Boxing Day after swallowing a button battery! Please make families aware of the dangers of this item (commonly found in many households). If ingested they can cause serious life-long injuries and/or death! 4 Feedback from Spring Term to … ELFS workshops …Do you feel that participation in As a result of budget cuts we now allocate either a morning or afternoon session for your workshop(s) staffed by just two ELFS trainers. ELFS will change the children’s and/or parent’s/carer’s knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about safety? How? We ask you to request (when booking your workshops) who you would like us to work with… "Yes - Awareness - Prevention - Treatment - Sharing of Knowledge." Crossacres Primary Academy January 2016 "Yes - Making them aware of dangers and how to prevent them." Varna Community Primary School March 2016 "Yes - Through practical activities and discussion." St Willibrord's RC Primary School January 2016 "Yes - Makes children aware of dangers around school and at home." Claremont Primary School …Just parents/carers? …Just children? …Parents/carers for 1.5 hours followed by an abbreviated workshop(s) for the children? We will confirm by email whether or not we can deliver your workshop(s). This is determined by funding, capacity, whether or not you meet the criteria that we have agreed with our commissioners etc. Children’s workshops What we are able to deliver to the children depends on whether you opt for full or abbreviated workshops, and how many children (in Nursery or Reception) you would like us to work with. All children (regardless of numbers and your choice of workshop) will get to meet Elfie Bear and talk about his injuries. February 2016 @ ManchesterELFS It really helps us to effectively deliver the children’s workshops if we can have a separate room, or area away from the main activity of the class, and an adult who knows the children sitting in. 5 ELFS parent/carer workshop Schools/centres need to sign up at least 10 parents/carers to be considered for this. We … • • Discuss health services that are available in the event of ill health or injury (promotion of the NHS Choose Well campaign). Provide an Opportunity to watch and discuss the RoSPA Safe at Home DVD. Parent/carer workshop comments to: “What was the most important thing that you learned”? "About the small batteries. How poisonous they actually are when ingested." • Demonstrate and talk about how to manage serious bleeding, choking and the unconscious casualty. • Assist and encourage parents/carers to practice resuscitation techniques (chest compressions and rescue breaths) on baby & child/adult manikins. It’s informal and interactive and parents/carers get a small “goody bag” containing information and resources to help prevent some of the more serious, common accidental injuries in 3 to 5 year olds.
