Enjoy all the flavours of Asia
Malaysia has a diverse array of culinary delights originating from its rich tapestry of cultures. The country’s seemingly
endless array of cooking methods range from Malay, Chinese, Indian, Portuguese-Malaysian to Baba Nyonya and
various other ethnic styles. Food is one of the greatest passions of Malaysians and it is a small wonder that the
country has an assortment of eateries; from exclusive fine-dining establishments to 24-hour restaurants and
open-air food courts. There is a mouth-watering variety of street food for adventurous travellers and delectable
gourmet delights for those with a discerning palate. Halal food is never a problem given Malaysia’s large Muslim
population. Vegetarian-friendly restaurants are available in major towns.
Table For Two:
Romantic Dinners and Fine Dining
Tucked away at breathtaking locations, the country’s
array of sophisticated and stylish restaurants tempt
the palate with a superb selection of starters, main
courses and decadent desserts. In Malaysia, visitors
can embark on a gastronomic adventure with some of

and Indian dishes or delight in Italian, French, Japanese,
Korean, Thai or Middle Eastern gastronomic delights
prepared by renowned chefs.
Let the restaurants
entice you with their signature dishes, vintage wines
and impeccable service. To provide a memorable
dining experience, some restaurants are located in
restored colonial homes, adding a touch of grandeur
and elegance.

must-haves:

or meat. Nasi Goreng is a complete meal by itself and
can be savoured at any time of the day. Loved by all

Give new meaning to relaxation as you unwind to
the melody of traditional music. Malaysia has an

make things even more exciting, every state has its
own unique cultural expression. Johor is known for
Kuda Kepang, a spellbinding performance featuring
two-dimensional rattan horses. Kelantan, hailed
as the Cradle of Malay Culture, has a wide array
of cultural shows. Among them are Dikir Barat, an
energetic choir and Mak Yong, a graceful dance. In

More revelry awaits in Sabah and Sarawak, situated
in Malaysian Borneo. Sabah’s Magunatip is an
impressive showcase of the dancers’ ability to deftly
jump across bamboo poles that are constantly being
clapped under their feet. Sarawak’s Datun Julud or
hornbill dance depicts the hornbill in flight while the
Ngajat Pahlawan portrays a fearsome warrior in an
ornate shield and elaborate headdress. If you are
at the longhouse or traditional dwelling, chances
are that there will be free flow of Tuai or locallybrewed rice wine to keep the energy level high.
When the main performance is over, visitors would
be called to join in and try out the steps. With the
lively music and enthusiastic dance partners, what

Ready to
Par ty?
Be prepared to be awed by Malaysia’s clubbing scene.
The chic clubs here draw a steady crowd of revellers,
mainly expats and young professionals. In the capital city
of Kuala Lumpur, places such as Changkat Bukit Bintang,
KLCC, Asian Heritage Row (Jalan Doraisamy) and Jalan
Sultan Ismail are the clubbing hotspots with some of the
city’s best watering holes and bistros. Bukit Bintang offers
a more relaxed pace with alfresco restaurants, trendy
sidewalk cafes along with some retail therapy. There are
plenty of buskers to keep you entertained too.
Most bars have an extensive selection of Western food
and local delights that pair handsomely with the drinks
menu. For starters, enjoy the drinks and tapas, and then
try out the pastas, pizzas or local favourites. Club-hoppers
will find an exciting clubbing circuit waiting to be explored.
If dancing the night away is high on your list, then enjoy
the electrifying nightlife as you step into the sassy grooves
that belt out the latest in techno and hip hop. Or sway to
the tunes of salsa and samba. Put on your dancing shoes
and get ready to party!
12

some clubs have free entry. Ladies enjoy

bars, a number of clubs have designated
non-smoking areas.
Don’t drink and drive
Last but not least, if you’ve had one too
many, it’s best to get someone to drive
you to your hotel.
Classy Cocktail Bars
If stylish lounges and cocktail bars are your thing,
there are many great places to relax and dine in posh
surrounds. Have a penchant for soul and jazz? Just
kick back and enjoy the live bands at these bars.
Rooftop Bars
KL’s high-rise buildings and iconic landmarks have

your favourite team as you catch the action. Aside
from the designated sports bars, many restaurants
hop on the bandwagon by offering special promotions
when there is a much-anticipated sporting event.

Sembilan
Known as the Home of Ancient Traditions, Negeri Sembilan is
distinguished by its distinctive architecture of upswept roofs that
resemble buffalo horns as well as the Adat Perpatih matrilineal social
system. Negeri Sembilan beckons with attractions such as the Royal
Museum of Seri Menanti, one of the last remaining wooden palaces in
the country and Port Dickson, a popular beach resort. Other attractions
include homestay villages surrounded by lush fruit orchards and
recreational forests.
Negeri Sembilan is synonymous with Masak Lomak Cili Api, a delicious
combination of meat simmered in coconut milk, with generous portions of
chilli. Be sure to have Air Jando Pulang, a refreshing drink at hand, to douse
the fire caused by the spiciness! Many of the state’s popular food outlets are
situated in the smaller towns and a keen sense of gastronomic adventure will
lead food lovers to these spots.
Seremban, Negeri Sembilan’s capital city, offers a modest but relaxing
nightlife. Lining the calm waters of the Straits of Malacca, Port Dickson or
PS’s sedate nightlife is a haven for those in search of a peaceful getaway.
PD’s string of hotels and resorts offer a fantastic range of dining and
entertainment options. For the adventurous, there is always the PD night
market. Stretching as far as the eye can see, the bazaar has a profusion of
local delights from Satay and grilled chicken to colourful desserts.

Johor is Malaysia’s southern gateway. The state is the hub for family
fun with Asia’s first Legoland, Puteri Harbour Theme Park and Desaru
beach. Johor has a number of beautiful islands - Sibu, Aur and Tinggi
- which are lapped by the crystal-clear waters of the South China Sea.
Cascading waterfalls and legendary national parks make Johor one of
the most interesting destinations in the country. Decked with designer
brands, Johor Premium Outlet is the place for high-end clientele.
Johor
Malaysia’s southern gateway is a great destination for food, leisure and entertainment. Happening areas include
Johor Bahru downtown, Bandar Baru Uda and Istana Bukit Serene where the pulsating rhythm draws a steady
line of revellers and party-goers. The Fun Zone at Stulang Laut is a clubbing hotspot with cool bistros and karaoke
joints. JB Bazz or locally known as Pasar Karat is an interesting night market where you can find all types of local
food with aspiring singers belting out popular numbers in the background. Those in search of local food should not
miss Laksa Johor, a dish unique to the state.

Once a wealthy tin-mining state, Perak greets visitors with a cornucopia
of attractions. Popular sights include Gua Tempurung limestone caves,
Lenggong Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mysterious Kellie’s
Castle, the tranquil Taiping Lake Gardens, idyllic Pangkor Island and the
luxury getaway of Pangkor Laut.
Perak
Perak is well-known for its food, with trademark dishes,
fruits and beverages. Popular items include Chicken with
Bean Sprouts and the locally brewed Ipoh White Coffee.
Kopitiams or traditional coffee shops can be found all
around Ipoh – offering Malaysia’s version of an all-day
breakfast menu. Enjoy a satisfying meal of toasts thickly
spread with butter and Kaya (traditional jam), half-boiled
eggs and aromatic coffee. In areas such as Ipoh Garden
East, Jalan Raja Ekram and Jalan Medan, the languid
atmosphere of the day gives way to a hip clientele,
primed for the evening’s entertainment.
The small town of Tambun is
famed for pomelos or Limau Bali,
a huge citrus fruit. It is said that
the variety grown in Tambun has
the largest size and the sweetest
pulp.

West as well as the old and new. George Town, its capital, is a UNESCO
World Heritage City with elegant colonial buildings and a rich potpourri
of cultures. Penang Bridge (Asia’s longest bridge), lovely beach resorts,
heritage buildings and the unique funicular railway are among the sights
that will charm visitors.

Famed as Malaysia’s food capital, Penang offers an unending range of lipsmacking delights. Enriched by the culinary styles of the Malays, Chinese,
Indians and the Peranakan (Straits Chinese), this gourmet paradise has
every imaginable flavour and taste. Gurney Drive, Penang Road, Fettes
Park and Macalister Road are among the top haunts for foodies. Food
journalists and travellers from around the world have been fascinated by
Penang’s Char Kuay Teow, Nasi Kandar and Pasembor – so don’t leave
Penang without trying them out!

Reputed to be the oldest state in Malaysia, Kedah is home to Bujang
Valley, the site of an ancient civilisation and Langkawi, a world-famous
island resort. The Ricebowl State of Malaysia has a rural landscape
dotted by paddy fields, rugged limestone outcrops and verdant
greenery. The Tree Top Walk (the world’s longest canopy walk), Alor
Setar Tower and the innovative Paddy Museum make a visit here
memorable.
Kedah
When the hunger pangs strike, opt for a steaming bowl of thick and slurpy
Laksa Kuala Kedah. If you’re in the island paradise of Langkawi, don’t miss
the Cenang and Kok beachfronts to take in the delicious seafood and vibrant
nightlife. Visitors can also head to Oriental Village and Telaga Harbour Marina,
where a string of restaurants dot the coastline, offering a glittering view of the
area by night.

Malaysia’s northernmost state has a range of attractions that belie its
tiny size. The northern gateway to Malaysia is defined by stretches of
paddy plains interspersed with quaint traditional Malay houses and
limestone hills. Serene lakes and fruit farms enhance the rural scenery.
Perlis
Perlis is known for its traditional delicacies and Thai-style dishes, given the proximity to Malaysia’s northern neighbour.
The state grows its own variety of luscious mangoes known as Harum Manis mangoes. Interestingly, there are also
vineyards that produce grapes. The night markets and the border town bazaar of Wang Kelian keep night-owls
occupied and entertained.

China Sea. The islands of Redang, Perhentian, Kapas, Lang Tengah and
Tenggol attract holidaymakers from around the world with their sapphire
waters and prolific marine life. On the mainland, attractions range from
traditional boat building at Pulau Duyong, the gleaming Crystal Mosque
and Lake Kenyir, the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia.

Terengg
Terengganu has an abundance of rice-based dishes,
ranging from Nasi Dagang, Nasi Kunyit and Nasi
Kuning. If that’s too heavy, try Bubu Lambut, a rice
porridge cooked with sweet potatoes and infused
with herbs.
Seafood reigns supreme with a wide variety of dishes
and snacks, such as Keropok Lekor and Sata fish
crackers. The islands of Perhentian Besar, Perhentian
Kecil and Redang have a string of beach resorts and
cafes that create the ideal environment for visitors to
while their time away.

Home to Malaysia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sabah is filled
with natural wonders and incredible attractions. Visit Mount Kinabalu,
one of Southeast Asia’s highest peaks, explore Maliau Basin, hailed
as Sabah’s Lost World or go diving at Tunku Abdul Rahman Park and
Sipadan Island. The 32 ethnic groups in the state make up the colourful
tapestry of Sabah’s culture.
Sabah
Given its diversity of cultures, Sabah has an interesting culinary scene.
The excellent weather and lush greenery also results in fresh, quality
ingredients. Try Bambangan, a local mango salad or Hinava, another
savoury salad made of thinly sliced fresh mackerel seasoned with
chilli, ginger, onions and a dash of lemon juice. Pinasakan is a fruity
seafood dish that can be preserved and stored for days.
Visitors can savour Sabah’s food and nightlife in a variety of locations,
from the business district of Kota Kinabalu, to the foothills of Mount
Kinabalu, to exotic villages overlooking the South China Sea.
Passengers on board the Nor th
Borneo Railway can enjoy a
tiffin-style lunch as the steam
engine meanders through
the scenic villages and countryside.
Sabah’s entertainment outlets are just as exciting – with everything from
classy establishments to party outlets that belt out thumping tunes.
The most popular areas include KK Waterfront, Gaya Street, KK Times
Square and Jesselton Point.
