Clarksville UMC holds their
Food Pantry on the second
Thursday of the month at 6pm.
They pass out about 30 boxes
of cereal each month, and we
are their cereal church. So when shopping for
groceries please pick up an extra box of cereal
(any kind) for the food pantry and put it in the bin
in the Entry. NOTE: they do not need more
plastic grocery bags at this time – please recycle
them elsewhere. Thank you!

Just a few tidbits:
• Wonderful Christian teaching and music
is aired daily on WFCJ, 93.7 FM. They
are listener-supported and welcome
donations.
• Daily Bible app is available on your
smartphone. It sends you a passage
daily, which is great, but the neatest part
is that you can have it read whole
chapters to you as you drive or relax.
Love it!
• YouTube is a great place to search for
Christian music videos.
• If you wish to research a specific topic in
the Bible, go to www.BibleGateway.com.
You can then choose any version of the
Bible you wish. Amazing tool!

Ladies Bible Study
The Thursday Ladies Bible study will begin a
new study on August 13th at 11:00 entitled,
"Jesus the One and Only". Please come join us
and bring a friend. If you are indecisive, talk
with Peggy Duncan, Sarah Largent Clark, Irma
Palmer, Linda Fox, Terri Hackman or myself to
see how we feel about the depth of what we
have learned, the closeness we are developing
with the Lord and the sistership we feel toward
each other. Seriously, this is something you
truly need to do for yourself. Please contact me
with questions and to let me know if you plan on
attending so I can order you a workbook.

came up the side of the cup. Then I read the
Scripture, ‘I am the vine, you are the branches.
Whosoever abides in me will bring forth much
fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing.’ I had
intended to read my communion passage back
to earth, but at the last minute [they] had
requested that I not do this. NASA was already
embroiled in a legal battle with Madelyn Murray
O’Hare, the celebrated opponent of religion,
over the Apollo 8 crew reading from Genesis
while orbiting the moon at Christmas. I agreed
reluctantly. …I ate the tiny Host and swallowed
the wine. I gave thanks for the intelligence and
spirit that had brought two young pilots to the
Sea of Tranquility. It was interesting for me to
think: the very first liquid ever poured on the
moon, and the very first food eaten there, were
the communion elements.”

Communion on the Moon
July 20, 1969
by Eric Metaxas
Forty-five years ago, two human beings
changed history by walking on the surface of the
moon. But what happened before Buzz Aldrin
and Neil Armstrong exited the Lunar Module is
perhaps even more amazing, if only because so
few people know about it. I’m talking about the
fact that Buzz Aldrin took communion on the
surface of the moon. Some months after his
return, he wrote about it in Guideposts
magazine. And a few years ago I had the
privilege of meeting him myself. I asked him
about it and he confirmed the story to me.
And of course, it’s interesting to think that some
of the first words spoken on the moon were the
words of Jesus Christ, who made the Earth and
the moon — and who, in the immortal words of
Dante, is Himself the “Love that moves the Sun
and other stars.”
The background to the story is that Aldrin was
an elder at his Presbyterian Church in Texas
during this period in his life, and knowing that he
would soon be doing something unprecedented
in human history, he felt he should mark the
occasion somehow, and he asked his pastor to
help him. And so the pastor consecrated a
communion wafer and a small vial of
communion wine. And Buzz Aldrin took them
with him out of the Earth’s orbit and on to the
surface of the moon.

Greens + Olive Oil =
A Perfect Pair
A recent study involving mice helps explain how
the Mediterranean diet, with its abundance of
olive oil, might bolster heart health. The authors
found that when the unsaturated fats in olive oil
and nuts combine with nitrite- and nitrate-rich
vegetables such as spinach and celery,
chemical reactions occur that inhibit an enzyme
that affects blood vessel width. The result: wider
blood vessels and lower blood pressure. All the
more reason to use olive oil dressing on your
next salad.
He and Armstrong had only been on the lunar
surface for a few minutes when Aldrin made the
following public statement: “This is the LM pilot.
I’d like to take this opportunity to ask every
person listening in, whoever and wherever they
may be, to pause for a moment and contemplate
the events of the past few hours and to give
thanks in his or her own way.” He then ended
radio communication and there, on the silent
surface of the moon, 250,000 miles from home,
he read a verse from the Gospel of John, and he
took communion. Here is his own account of
what happened:
Taking a Statin?
Watch your waistline
“In the radio blackout, I opened the little plastic
packages which contained the bread and the
wine. I poured the wine into the chalice our
church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of
the moon, the wine slowly curled and gracefully
A study of 28,000 adults found that those who
took cholesterol-lowering statin drugs had
increased their average calorie and fat intake by
10 and 14 percent, respectively, after a decade.

6. Stand up for the leadership of the
church
7. Be willing to not get your way if it
means advancing the mission
8. Don’t compare your church to the one
down the street or across town
And they gained 7-10 pounds, on average,
compared with smaller weight changes among
adults who didn’t take statins. The authors
wrote that taking those drugs may have led
people to think that they didn’t need to make
healthy dietary changes as well.

Eight Practical Steps
to Preserving Church Unity
by Thom Rainer
Church unity, frankly, is lacking in too many of
our churches today. Church splits, fights, and
bickering are far too common. So today on the
podcast, we look at eight simple steps that can
help preserve church unity. These aren’t an
overnight fix, but they can set your church on a
trajectory to promoting unity in the fellowship.
Some highlights from today’s episode include:
• One of the major concerns in the church
today is church unity.
• Corporate worship gatherings in the
church should be focused on prayer and
the ministry of the Word.
• A denomination will not be unified as
long as the churches within it are not
unified themselves.
• Where two or more Baptists are
gathered, there are three or more
opinions.
• Most disagreements in the church
happen over the way things are done,
not why they are done.
• When you start comparing your church to
others, you tear down the unity in your
church.
• The more you focus on prayer and
Scripture, the more you’ll bring the
church together in unity.
• The more the Body of Christ comes
together in selflessness, the more
unified a church will become.
The eight steps to church unity we cover in this
podcast are:
1. Make prayer and Scripture the focus
of corporate gatherings
2. Preach and teach about church unity
3. Put others before yourself
4. Talk to people, not about people
5. Be a part of the change you want to
see
Saturday, September 19
19th from
12:00 – 4:00 p.m.
If you helped out or visited this
event last year, you remember what
a great time everyone had. And we
saw how it was a wonderful way to
reach out to the community.
Same as last year, we need to work
together to pull off another great
event.
If you could contribute in any way,
please come to an organizational
meeting at the church on Monday,
August 17th at 6:30.
We have a lot to do in just a little
over a month.
I hope to see you there!

Great Job, Trustees!
Many thanks are due to the trustees, specifically Bruce Duncan and
Judy Schnecker. Judy found that Valerie Rask, who attends
Oregonia-Harveysburg UMC, repairs stained glass windows, and
got the project rolling. The bottom portion of the windows was
sagging, and if ignored, would have broken. Bruce took them all
out, Valerie repaired, Judy painted, Bruce puttied and re-installed.
They look great and we appreciate your many hours of hard work!
