This little list grew to this book which is now in its second printing. I have been rescuing goldens and been involved in the animal world in a large scale for the last eight years. When i started rescuing I thought all i would just see the occasional abused or neglected dog. Boy was I surprised. A very small percentage of dogs that I take into rescue are abused or neglected but often given up for a unfortunate but usually valid reason. People economic situations change, peoples living situation change due to illness, people may be ill informed when they get a pet and not be able to deal with its particular issues as it grows from a puppy to an adult dog. I believe that solution is education education education. The animal controls, shelters and rescues in the state are bursting from the seams. Call it pet over population. Call it pet anti retention. The heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is now recognized as a major, global parasite affecting dogs, cats, wolves, coyotes, and foxes. From its discovery in dogs more than a century ago and the documentation in cats in the 1920s, researchers have devised diagnostic tests, preventives and treatments, but the disease still spreads. Heartworm prevention is simple. It involves a blood sample be drawn to determine whether the parasite is present and regular dosing with preventive medication. Heartworm infestation is dangerous; untreated dogs may die, and treated dogs may be too seriously infested to be treated. In addition, treatment can be expensive. In other words, prevention is the name of the game. In this case prevention is simple. Before 1988 the only heartworm preventives that were available had to be administered on a daily basis. This was, frankly, a pain and there was non-compliance from the best of us. Now, with once a month dosing the task is easy. You put a little sticker on your calendar to jog your memory and it’s done. You can write the date you intend to give each monthly dose on the packaging itself, so that you will become immediately aware if you have skipped a month. Not only does this save you a lot of money that you would have to spend on heartworm treatment but most importantly it saves your pet from an enormous amount of suffering. If you are really bad about remembering to do this, or are too busy to remember, a 6-month preventive injection is available for dogs from many veterinarians. Now up this point I am sure I have a consensus. The following are some facts that you may not be aware of. Only the heartworm preventive you buy from your vet is 100% guaranteed from the manufacturer. This means if there is any product failure, they will pay for the treatment of your pet. The only authorized vendors of these products are veterinarians. Unauthorized retailers have obtained many of these products from overseas sources. These products may have been subjected to extreme temperature changes during shipping that can dramatically impact the effectiveness of the products. Internet and catalog goods are second, third, or even fourth hand products. During the process of reselling they may have been stored in a shed or in the bed of a truck. There is no temperature control and there is no regulatory agency to inspect how these products have been handled. Veterinarian’s products are shipped directly from the manufacturer under the proper conditions. Internet companies are not getting their products from the manufacturer. The heartworm medication manufacturers maintain a strict policy of selling products exclusively through practicing licensed veterinarians. The issue here is that a professional veterinarian-clientpatient relationship exists to help ensure that patients receive proper medical care. Some of the medication being sold through catalogs or internet companies in the US was made for foreign markets; these foreign medicines are not approved by the FDA for sale in the United States. They may be materially different from the US products in a number of ways, including their purity, potency, and their instruction for use. These are not the same products. The last issue is price. If you compare your veterinarian’s price with the price of the medication plus shipping you will realize you are not saving that much money. In some cases catalogue sales end up being more expensive or the same price as that charged by your veterinarian. As a pet owner the health of my pets is of utmost importance. You may accept a drug return and give the patient credit but you MAY NOT RETURN IT TO YOUR STOCK OR RE-DISPENSE IT TO ANOTHER PATIENT. The specific citation is F. S. 465.005, 64 b 1628.118. The interesting thing is that you must really read through the citation carefully, it does not say that you cannot return prescription items to stock; it tells you when you can, everything else is prohibited. Two items of note, to return prescription drugs to stock, they must be in unit dose AND you must be dispensing in a system “in which the actual control of the unit dose medication is maintained by the facility rather than by the individual”. This positive rule was made so that drugs dispensed to long-term care facilities could be returned for credit. If you go into any pharmacy, you will see a sign that paraphrases this rule: “Florida State law prohibits the return of any prescription item”. Female dogs may develop mammary cancer. A female dog spayed before her first heat will have a near zero chance of developing mammary cancer. After the first heat,this incidence climbs to 7% and after the second heat the risk is 25 percent (one in four!). Anunspayed female there is a chance of Pyometra. Pyometra is a life-threatening infection of the uterus that generally occurs in middle-aged to older female dogs in the six weeks following heat. One of the most important concerns with male dogs one of the most important concerns is the prostate gland. Under the influence of testosterone will gradually enlarge over the course of the dog’s life. In age, it is likely to become uncomfortable, possibly being large enough to interfere with defecation. The prostate under the infl uence of testosteroneis also predisposed to infection, which is almost impossible to clear up without neutering. Neutering causes the prostate to shrink thus preventing both prostatitis as well as the uncomfortable benign hyperplasia (enlargement) that occurs with aging. Other health benefits of neutering include the prevention of certain types of hernias and tumors of the testicles and anus. IMPROVE BEHAVIOR The testosterone in your male dog makes him anxious and unsettled. Some veterinarians believe that intact dogs suffer from neuroses and this manifests itself by obsessive-compulsive disorders, such as excessive licking, staring into space or selfmutilization by scratching. Other traits that will improve is eliminating the urge for male dogs and cats to “ mark” their territory, male dogs will not have the urge to “hump” other pets or people and housetraining is much easier and faster. Playfulness, friendliness, and socialization with humans are not changed. The interest in roaming is eliminated in 90 percent of neutered dogs. Aggressive behavior against other male dogs is eliminated in 60 percent of neutered dogs. The main reason to neuter a male cat is to reduce the incidence of objectionable behaviors that are normal in the feline world but unacceptable in the human world. Roaming, fighting and urine marking will be significantly reduced. WANDERING Instinct dictates that your pets go out and reproduce. When we spay or neuter our pets, we are removing this need to wander around the neighborhood searching for that special mate. Not wandering will also keep your pet at home and safe. COST No vet bills relating to the cost of health -related problems that affl ict intact animals and puppies they might have. Rabies tags usually cost less for altered pets than unaltered pets. SENSELESS SLAUGHTER There are millions of puppies, dogs, kittens and cats that are killed every year due to irresponsible pet ownership. In her lifetime, one unsprayed female pet can be responsible for thousands of unwanted animals. In five years, two dogs can reproduce 65,000 dogs! ELIMINATE CLEAN-UPS Spaying a dog or cat eliminates it heat cycle, which can last 21 days, twice a year in dogs; and anywhere from 3 -15 days, 3 or more times a year, in cats. Females in heat often cry incessantly, show nervous behavior, and attract unwanted male animals. Often there is an offensive odor. All of this disappears with spaying HELP THE COMMUNITY Communities spend millions of dollars to control and eliminate unwanted animals. This money comes from us -the taxpayer. Our original list came from the Rescue List posted at the Buddies thru Bullies website. After a lot of positive feedback I started there and made a bigger list and my little list grew into this book. This book is now in its second printing. It was my sincere hope that it would be utilized by veterinarian offices though out Florida to accomplish a few goals. 1. For rescues , we could hear from people before things got so bad the pet ended up in animal control. Thru the years I’ve received many calls from people who thru no fault of their own had a change in circumstances and needed to re-home their pets. Many times we were able to redirect the pet owner back to their veterinarian for help with the issues. 2. We were able to network with many shelters that would let me know they had a golden and I could easily notify the folks from my list that they may want to go to a particular shelter and adopt from them. I sincerely believe we are all part of a community that needs to find ways to work together. For my fellow rescue people. You continue to inspire me daily. I know some days you feel like its expelling flatulence up wind. Then there are those wonderful days when you get a message about placement you made and how much of a difference it made.
