Billed as a rising leader in the crane industry in the United States, LJ’s services include crane rental and crane service (with or without operators), specialized logistics, warehousing, heavy hauling and North American transportation services, as well as rigging, millwrighting, industrial plant deconstruction and selective tailored demolition. Pat and Stacey Izzo began the company ten years ago, headquartered in the basement of their Cranston, R.I. home. Still family owned and operated, their emphasis remains flexible, personalized, around-the clock attention tailored to each customer’s needs. In 2008 LJ marked its third consecutive time as an Inc. 500 listed company and saw annual sales revenues surpass the $25 million mark, nearly six times its sales volume of just four years ago. LJ is consistently ranked in Providence Business News’ annual Book of Lists as one of the fastest growing Rhode Island companies as well. Last year, Pat Izzo and Paul Fioravanti, Vice President & COO, were in the process of developing the company’s future location, a portion of a 54acre site in Smithfield, Rhode Island when Paul learned of the availability of the former Penske Logistics site in Warwick, from commercial real estate broker Larry Steingold. Larry was a bit skeptical about the suitability of the site for LJ’s operations, knowing that the company was planning to relocate to Smithfield. After seeing the facility, Izzo and Fioravanti had a vision for what it could be transformed into, with less time and aggravation than building from scratch. After extensive renovation, LJ consolidated and centralized its operations to the 3.5-acre parcel at 522 Jefferson Boulevard in July of 2008. Located in the Warwick Train Station District, the site is a block away from T.F. Green Airport and the under-construction Warwick Intermodal Station, and just minutes from Interstates 95 and 295. A 14,500 square-foot, block and steel building sits in the center of the property and underwent extensive renovations last summer, with new walls, ceilings, lighting, carpeting, plumbing and bathrooms, HVAC systems and controls, landscaping, and full paint, cabinetry, woodwork, trim and tile/granite counters and floors. New executive offices, a conference room and administrative, sales and general support offices and a fully remodeled kitchen/cafeteria are housed in one section of the facility. Other areas of the building include a new parts storage area and storage Stress Tip of the Month Enjoy some hobbies. Whether it’s gardening, painting or some other pursuit, taking time for your interests helps reduce stress. For more information about coping with everyday problems and stress in the workplace, visit www.thekentcenter.org. h loft, a fully enclosed pressure wash bay with a water maze oil water sepa-rator system, a 20,000-gallon, double-g walled diesel fuel tank with metering and pumping system, Veeder-Root leak detection system, and four epoxy-coated floor servicing bays, including an undervehicle servicing pit – all of which were as pristine and gleaming as the vehicles outside on the concrete parking area surrounding the building. The facility has also been fully rewired for electrical, CAT6 data cable, security surveillance and has energy efficient lighting installed. The property, and the City of Warwick, say Izzo and Fioravanti, are “the perfect fit” for their company. According to Fioravanti, “Warwick is extremely business savvy – we had very positive and professional interaction with a range of departments, from economic development to the building and zoning/planning areas, public safety, and other regulatory areas from which we received clear and professional guidance through the licensing and compliance processes. Additionally, we were very impressed with Mayor Avedisian’s desire to learn about our business firsthand and to assist us with some of the issues involved with relocation to the City. We are pleased to be here and look forward to being a good neighbor and thriving enterprise.” MAYOR SCOTT AVE DIS IAN Those of us in City government are pleased to welcome the LJ Companies to Warwick, and look forward to celebrating their continued growth and success. State unveils new campaign to boost sales of local crops GET FRESH. BUY LOCAL is a new initiative designed to provide Rhode Islanders with a steady stream of news, tips, information and features about the state’s farmers, farmers markets, farm stands and restaurants throughout the Ocean State. It will highlight the availability, quality, diversity and importance of supporting RI-grown crops. The GET FRESH. BUY LOCAL logo will soon be visible at places like roadside stands, farmers markets and select grocers in the form of stickers, buttons and bumper stickers. The campaign will feature I GOT FRESH items such as t-shirts and reusable grocery bags. A new Web site — getfreshbuylocal.org — has also been created. The total number of farms in Rhode Island has grown by 42 percent since 2002, according to a 2007 U.S. Department of Agriculture report (Growth nationwide was just four percent). The state’s crop sales have increased by 18 percent during that time, and its farmers markets have increased from four to nearly 40 during the past 15 years. The number of women farmers in the state is now more than double the national average. By ANTHONY LIZZI We’re in a recession, which could be severe. Several financial services companies have either collapsed or been bailed out by the government. And the stock market is down about 45 percent since hitting its peak in October of 2007. Is this a “perfect storm” that should blow investors out of the market — or is it actually an opportunity for investors to jump back in? If you’re an investor, your first impulse might be to join the “get out while you can” camp. After all, it’s no fun seeing the market plunge hundreds of points one day, and then hundreds more the next day. And we keep getting hit by waves of bad economic news. What possible reason could there be for remaining invested in the market, or even adding more dollars to your current investments? Actually, you might be surprised. Some strong historical evidence suggests that during a period such as we are now in, you may indeed benefit by not only staying invested, but also by increasing your investment dollars in the financial markets. Consider this: In nine of the last 10 recessions dating back to 1949, the S&P 500 had moved up by at least 29 percent just 12 months after hitting its lowest point during the recession. Of course, as you’ve no doubt heard, past performance is no guarantee of future results, but it’s interesting to note that the market eventually recovered after each recession. However, no one can really predict when stocks will reach that low point. It’s possible we’ve already hit it, but it’s just as likely that we’ll see further drops. And yet, even if you can’t say that we’ve hit a market low, should you sell your stocks to cut your losses and use the proceeds to buy what you perceive as less risky investments? Before making this move, you need to consider some important facts. For example, if you pulled out of the stock market and purchased certificates of deposit (CDs) from a strong financial institution, you could reasonably expect that your principal will be safe and that you will receive the interest payments promised to you. But the interest rate you receive may not even keep up with inflation so, over time, your investment could end up costing you purchasing power. On the other hand, if you were to remain invested in the stock market, and if it does follow historical patterns, you do have a chance of making up your losses. Will there be continued volatility in day-to-day price movements? Almost certainly. But keep in mind that over the long term, a portfolio that contains a reasonable amount of stocks, along with bonds, government securities and other investments, gives you the best chance of achieving your financial goals. Here’s another reason to keep investing: As measured by the price-to-earnings ratio (P/E), stocks are currently inexpensive. If you buy more shares when prices are down, your increased ownership stake should become more valuable when stocks recover — as they have done following every bear market in the past. It’s tough to stay positive during a gloomy market environment. But the most successful investors are often the ones who have the courage to be optimistic when everyone around them is not. ChamberWorks June 2009 Page 5 SALES & MARKETING MARKETING Q A: WITH PETER GEORGE I’m a self-employed professional and want to attract more clients, make more profits and have more time to enjoy life. What should I do? First, do you hear yourself in any of the following statements? • • • • • • • • • • Q A: Q& A It’s taking longer to grow my business than I expected With all my effort and stress, I feel like my profits are still too low. I need to attract more clients now! I don’t understand why I can’t get the number of customers I need I’m always searching for cost-effective ways to promote my business I need more prospects in my pipeline I’m working too many hours and missing out on other things in my life My marketing efforts leave me feeling frustrated, discouraged and confused I need advice that helps me build my business I have a nagging feeling that I should do something about my business, but I’m too busy working in my business to work on my business Yes, but what can I do? You need to decide if you are you tired of trying to do it on you own and failing. I can’t tell you how many self-employed professionals I’ve spoken with who tell me that they can’t get enough clients, aren’t making enough money or are working too many hours. It disturbs me when I hear this because it doesn’t have to be this way. Stop wasting time, money and effort There’s no reason for you to spend so much time and effort chasing prospects, hoping to land a client — or charging less than you’re worth —or working more hours than you had ever imagined. You can put an end to this...if you want to. You can start attracting profitable clients, making more money and have more time to enjoy life. There are a number of ways you can grow your business in results-producing steps. Let’s talk a little about how you can eliminate the guesswork, lost time and wasted money. You can learn to attract more clients by using easy-to-understand and implement strategies — strategies that you can and will consistently put into action. You will have profitable clients coming to you. Chasing clients is ineffective, costly and downright disheartening. But that’s exactly what most self-employed professionals do. I’m certain that this is not why you went into business. How much more would you enjoy your business if you could stop chasing prospects? If profitable clients came to you? What’s the first thing self-employed professionals do when business is slow? Quite often, they cut their prices. Have you done this? Have you thought about it? For that matter, are your fees as high as they should be? Are you getting paid what you’re worth and earning the kind of income you really want? If you focus on the steps you’re taking and look at the results you’re getting, you can turn things around. Do you: • Have a workable client attraction plan that you can and will consistently implement? • Attract more profitable clients? • Increase your revenue and profits? • Receive more and better referrals? • Acknowledge that you are the expert people want to do business with? • Increase your positive word-of-mouth advertising? • Target your profitable audience? • Eliminate unprofitable marketing? • Establish realistic objectives? • Actually enjoy your business? Remember you have options, and you can and will follow through — this will offer you the greatest opportunity for success. Take time to review each of these processes and determine which best suits you, your goals and yes, even your dreams. Peter George can be reached at (401) 742-1231. If you’re like most people, you probably keep your medicine in the most logical of places — your bathroom’s medicine cabinet. It makes perfect sense, right? Wrong. This popular spot is actually one of the worst places for storing your household remedies. Most medications, especially tablets and capsules, don’t like moisture and heat. As your bathroom gets warm and moist each time you shower, it can accelerate a drug’s decomposition and affect its potency, which may be harmful to you or your family members. In some cases, an improperly stored medication can actually become toxic. If you have small children, you should especially reconsider the medicine cabinet as a safe place to store medicine. Although it’s usually out of reach, children could climb up on the sink or counter to gain access to the medicine cabinet TIPS FOR PROPER MEDICINE STORAGE GETTING RID OF YOUR MEDICINE SAFELY It’s always a good idea to ask your pharmacist about any specific storage instructions. Here are some additional tips to help you keep your family’s medications safe, effective and out of harm’s way: • Store medicine tightly closed in its original container in a cool, dry place • Always store medicine out of reach of children • Remove the cotton plug from the medicine bottle, as it can draw moisture into the container • Check the expiration date each time you take a medication. Properly discard and replace any drugs that are out of date. You may want to get in the habit of checking dates twice per year at the same time that you make daylight savings time changes • Never use a medication that has changed color, consistency or odor, regardless of the expiration date • If someone in your family accidentally takes the wrong medicine or overdoses, immediately call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for instructions. Keep this number near your telephone for easy reference Whether your medication has expired or you just don’t need it anymore, it’s important to dispose of it properly. When medications — prescription or overthe-counter — are thrown into the garbage or flushed down the toilet or sink, their chemical components may be deposited into the water supply or soil, which poses a hazard to the environment — and to us. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO SAFELY DISPOSE OF UNUSED MEDICATIONS? • Check to see if your pharmacy has a drug recycling program that disposes of unused or expired drugs in an environmentally-safe way • If you must throw medicine away in your household garbage, it’s wise to crush any unused tablets so no one else can take them accidentally • Do not give empty medicine containers to children. Even if the containers are empty and clean, children should not learn to associate medicine with play Making sure your medications are in a safe place, whether in storage or when you’re disposing of them, can help avoid accidents and keep your family safe. Article written by Donna Paine, R.Ph. and reprinted with permission from Blue Cross, Blue Shield of Rhode Island, Helping you make the most of your healthcare choices, spring 2006 USCIS issues new rule on employment eligibility verification documents USCIS has issued an update and FAQ reminding customers that the revised Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification (Rev. 02/02/09) is now in effect as of April 3, 2009, for all U.S. employers. All employers, agricultural recruiters and referrers for a fee are required to verify the identity and employment authorization of each person they hire for employment in the United States. USCIS has revised Form I-9 to bring it into compliance with the governing statutes that require all documents presented during the Form I-9 process to be unexpired. The Form I-9 was revised based upon an interim final rule, published Dec.17, 2008, in the Federal Register, which revised the list of documents acceptable for the Form I-9 process. The revised list specifies that expired documents are no longer acceptable forms of identification or employment authorization. Previous versions of the Form I-9 may no longer be used. The revised list improves the security and effectiveness of the Form I-9 process. Allowing for expired documents makes it more difficult for employers to verify an employee’s identity and employment authorization, and compromises the Form I-9 process. The biggest difference in the revised Form I-9 is that all documents presented during the Form I-9 process must be unexpired. The list of approved documents that employees can present to verify their identity and employment authorization is divided into three sections: List A documents verify identity and employment authorization, List B documents verify identity only and List C documents verify employment authorization only. The following documents have been added or removed from the List of Approved Documents: Two documents have been added to List A: • A temporary I-551 printed notation on a machinereadable immigrant visa in addition to the foreign passport with a temporary I-551 stamp • A passport from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) or the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) with a valid Form I-94 or Form I-94A indicating nonimmigrant admission under the Compact of Free Association Between the United States and the FSM or RMI Three documents were removed from List A: • Form I-688, Temporary Resident Card • Form I-688A, Employment Authorization Card • Form I-688B, Employment Authorization Card USCIS wants to ensure that documents presented for use in the Form I-9 process are valid and reliably establish both identity and employment authorization status. Expired documents may not demonstrate a valid status and are prone to tampering and fraudulent use. This change takes into account the limits placed on these documents by their issuing authorities. If a document does not contain an expiration date, such as a Social Security card, it is considered unexpired. USCIS also updated the Handbook for Employers – Instructions for Completing Form I-9 to reflect the requirements of the revised Form I-9. For more information on USCIS and its programs, or to obtain the revised Form I-9 and handbook, visit www.uscis.gov. Employers who do not have computer access can order Forms I-9 by calling 1-800-870-3676. USCIS forms and information on immigration laws, regulations and procedures can also be requested by calling the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283. Page 8 ChamberWorks June 2009 MEET THE HOST ETM Green ETM Green is an electronics equipment (ewaste) collection and processing facility located in Cranston, RI. The company provides ewaste recycling for both large and small companies and individuals. We work with organizations, towns, municipalities, and other groups to sponsor public reclamation of electronic waste in an effort to make recycling convenient. ETM Green believes in responsible recycling by offering secure data destruction (shredding) services on-site. All ewaste is processed and de-manufactured at our 16,000 sq. ft. facility - with zero waste export. Rest assured, your retired electronics will not end up polluting a landfill or third-world country. Recycling with ETM Green provides the following benefits: As individuals - protection from identity theft; For the corporation - protection against corporate liability and data loss; Environmental compliance - zero landfill and no waste export. At ETM, we operate as a GREEN company for the benefit of our clients and the general public. We utilize processes designed to dissipate liabilities away from the corporation and individuals whether it be environment or data risks. In doing so, everyone wins: Companies can retire equipment without liabilities; employees can participate in a program by bringing their ewaste to work on scheduled ETM Green pick up dates; and the environment wins because virtually all of the materials can be processed correctly for reuse. ETM Green utilizes a method of process controls allowing for the reduction of liability and the recycling of materials for reuse. It is important to understand the recycling methods of a recycling service to ensure that proper data security policies are in place and that the responsibility for recycling has not been passed on to someone who will dump the electronics. Developing countries are not prepared to separate and handle materials safely, and ewaste sent to less developed countries will not be recycled responsibly. The risks and liabilities of not partnering with a responsible recycler are great so why not partner with ETM Green, the “Take No Chances” recycler. Simple Solutions to Complex Problems, do not take chances when a 100% guarantee against data loss or identity theft and environment liabilities can be eliminated. ChamberWorks Page 10 June 2009 HEALTH & WELLNESS GARDENING TIPS: Preventing back injury After what seems to be the longest winter in years, the promise of spring and summer is finally upon us! Our thoughts are drifting toward colorful flowers and fresh vegetables from our gardens. Some of us can hardly wait to smell the earth and sift the cool spring soil through our fingers. Let’s take a moment to review some precautions for a safe, enjoyable gardening season: • When lifting heavy objects, like soil or shrubs, it is important to bend your legs. • Bend at your knees and keep your back straight. Let your legs do most of the work — not your back. • Use a wheelbarrow to move larger objects. • Don’t sit on your feet. Try not to stay in one position for too long. Take breaks and stretch your neck and shoulders. Use long-handled tools to help keep you from bending while raking, digging or mowing. • Don’t overdo it! Try not to do everything in one day. Spread the planting, pruning and fertilizing over a period of time. This gives you the opportunity to enjoy extra time in the fresh spring air, as well as care for your body. Everest Base Camp Trek with Dr. Tim Join Dr. Tim, Rhode Island’s first Everest summiter, on the trip of a lifetime as he leads a small group to Everest Base Camp from April 15 to about May 6, 2010. This is one of the world’s most famous hikes. He will be going slowly to acclimatize trekkers, about 4 hours per day with rest and acclimatization days thrown in. The land cost is $3,300. Call Dr. Tim at 401-374-5067 or e-mail [email protected] for more information. This is not “climbing.” It is hiking and we will carry only 20 lbs. or so with porters and yaks carrying the rest. We will be staying with the fascinating Sherpa people in tea houses along the way. The deadline for deposit (non-refundable) of $1,000 is due June 1, 2009. TIPS FOR SAFE TREE TRIMMING • Overhead power lines are not insulated, and carry enough energy to cause serious injury or even death. Regard all wires as live • Keep yourself, your co-workers, friends, family and vehicles at least 10 feet away from residential electric lines and equipment • Stay alert. Keep ladders at least 10 feet away from power lines when carrying, moving and raising them • Keep away from wires when working with tools, pipe, lumber or siding — all of which can conduct electricity • Make sure the area is clear of wires before working near trees or shrubs • Never attach or tie anything to power lines or electrical equipment. To further ensure your safety, consider all lines “energized” and put an effective ground on all equipment working near overhead electric lines. SLOCUM has come up with a winning combination where family is the key. “A lot of businesses have problems with that, but it’s worked very well for us,” Phil said. So has being a part of the community they serve. Bob served on the School Improvement Team for Pilgrim and has served in multiple capacities for Warwick West Side Little League. Phil has spent his fair share of time coaching as well, in addition to being involved in the Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce, the Warwick Rotary Club, Cornerstone Adult Services and volunteering his time for the City of Warwick. “Being local guys, we’re dealing with friends and neighbors,” Bob said. “We enjoy a good life and it’s because of the community around us,” Phil added. “We send the message back to the community – hey, thanks.” The Slocum brothers would like to think that’s not the only way they’ve said thanks to their more than 3,000 insurance customers and their many other customers who, despite the economy, have continued to choose Slocum for their insurance and real estate needs. “People can buy their insurance anywhere but they come here because hopefully we’re able to show them they’re more than just a number — they matter,” Phil said, listing cost control as one of the major challenges. “The other big challenge for small businesses is competing with the giants who sell nothing but price.” They manage to hold their own though, and they’ve got resumes to prove it. Phil is a Certified Insurance Counselor, as is Bob, who is also a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter. Both graduated from the Aetna Home Office Training School and both continue to show a dedication to education, even after securing these designations. Phil has just been awarded the Al An- Page 11 drews Community Achievement Award. He has also received the Sam Walton Business Leader of the Year Award, the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary International and the Small Businessperson of the Year from the Central Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce. Bob was named Chairman of the Year by the Professional Insurance Agents of New England and was awarded the renowned Carlton J. Fischer Outstanding Agent Award by the Independent Insurance Agents of Rhode Island — the highest honor in the IIARI organization. Much of their success, they say, is thanks to their staff at the Slocum Agency. “The people we have on board are the absolute best in the industry. You’re only as good as your weakest link and our weakest link is strong,” Bob said, adding that he would put his team up against anyone in the industry. As they celebrate 60 years of business, they also recently added some new members to that team when the Slocum Agency ushered a third generation of their family into the ranks — bringing on Phil’s son, Nick, and Bob’s son, Chris. “They understand what the customer is going to want,” Bob said. He believes this next generation carries a vision for the future of Slocum Agency, equating their contribution to staying ahead in a game of hockey. “They’re going to help us figure out where the puck is going to be.” Together, the Slocum family has a track record of doing just that for their clients and look forward to the next 60 years with dedication, excitement and enthusiasm.
