The Service [Congregational responses are printed in bold-faced type.] ELW: the hard covered service book, Evangelical Lutheran Worship The Prelude O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing Welcome and Announcements arr. Denton Moment of Reflection Temple Talk Please stand in body or spirit. GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. The Confession and Forgiveness Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, abounding in steadfast love toward us, healing the sick and raising the dead, showering us with every good gift. Amen. Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection Just and gracious God,, we come to you for healing and life. Our sins hurt others and diminish us; we confess them to you. Our lives bear the scars of sin; we bring these also to you. Show us your mercy, O God. Bind up our wounds, forgive us our sins, and free us to love, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. The apostle Paul assures us: “When we were dead in our trespasses, God made us alive together with Christ, nailing the record of our sins to the cross.” Jesus says to you, ☩ “Your sins are forgiven.” Be at peace, and tell everyone how much God has done for you. Amen. Deliver us from the death of sin, and raise us to new life in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 4 The Hymn of Praise This is the Feast Reprinted by ownership of sufficient copies or license # see page 22. 5 THE WORD God speaks to us in scripture, preaching, and song. The First Reading 1 Kings 17:17-24 17 After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill; his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. 18She then said to Elijah, “What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to cause the death of my son!” 19But he said to her, “Give me your son.” He took him from her bosom, carried him up into the upper chamber where he was lodging, and laid him on his own bed. 20He cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I am staying, by killing her son?” 21Then he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, let this child’s life come into him again.” 22The LORD listened to the voice of Elijah; the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper chamber into the house, and gave him to his mother; then Elijah said, “See, your son is alive.” 24So the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth.” Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God. 6 The Psalmody | Psalm 30 From the Fullness of God | DATH 18 The congregation will sing the following response: 1I will exalt you, O LORD, because you have lifted me up and have not let my enemies triumph over me. 2O LORD my God, I cried out to you, and you restored me to health. 3You brought me up, O LORD, from the dead; you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. 4Sing praise to the LORD, all you faithful; give thanks in holy remembrance. 5God’s wrath is short; God’s favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping spends the night, but joy comes in the morning. 6While I felt secure, I said, “I shall never be disturbed. Response LORD, with your favor, made me as strong as the mountains.” Then you hid your face, and I was filled with fear. 8I cried to you, O LORD; I pleaded with my Lord, saying, 9“What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness? 10Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me; O LORD, be my helper.” 11You have turned my wailing into dancing; you have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy. 12Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever. Response 7You, 7 The Second Reading Galatians 1:11-24 11 For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; 12for I did not receive it from a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 You have heard, no doubt, of my earlier life in Judaism. I was violently persecuting the church of God and was trying to destroy it. 14I advanced in Judaism beyond many among my people of the same age, for I was far more zealous for the traditions of my ancestors. 15But when God, who had set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace, was pleased 16to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with any human being, 17nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were already apostles before me, but I went away at once into Arabia, and afterwards I returned to Damascus. 18 Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and stayed with him fifteen days; 19but I did not see any other apostle except James the Lord’s brother. 20In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie! 21Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia, 22and I was still unknown by sight to the churches of Judea that are in Christ;23they only heard it said, “The one who formerly was persecuting us is now proclaiming the faith he once tried to destroy.” 24And they glorified God because of me. Word of God. Word of Life. Thanks be to God. Please stand in body or spirit. 8 The Gospel Acclamation Halle, Halle, Hallelujah | ELW 172 Reprinted by ownership of sufficient copies or license #, see page 22 The Holy Gospel Luke 7:11-17 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, Chapter 7 Glory to you, O Lord. 11 Soon afterwards [Jesus] went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. 12As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother’s only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. 13When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, “Do not weep.” 14Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, “Young man, I say to you, rise!” 15The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. 16Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has risen among us!” and “God has looked favorably on his people!” 17This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding country. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated. Children’s Message “Superpowers” The Message Elise Seyfried Bill Vanderslice 9 Please stand in body or spirit. The Hymn All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly Hard Covered Hymn Book – ELW # 461 Reprinted by ownership of sufficient copies or license #, see page 3. 10 The Apostles’ Creed Let us together as a community of faith confess the Christian faith in the words of the Apostles’ Creed. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 11 The Prayers of Intercession Please kneel or sit as you are able for the prayers. Let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God’s creation. A brief silence. God, we praise you for revealing your gospel to prophets, preachers, and leaders in your church. Inspire their continuing faithful proclamation. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. God of the living and the dead, work in your creation, and work through us, in such ways that lead to life for your creation and for all people. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. God of the city, we pray for cities, urban areas, suburbs, small towns, and all communities. Look favorably on all lands; bring peace where there is conflict and cooperation where there is disagreement. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Holy One, you see the needs of those who suffer. When we are sick, tend to us and to our neighbors, and give us gratitude when we are well. We pray especially for . . . . Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Giver of joy, make your presence known in this assembly. Give us such a clear and bold share of your Spirit that your life and vitality shine through us into our neighborhood. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. O God, you have called the saints your own. Gather us into your kingdom, in the promise of life forever with you. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We lift our prayers to you, O God, trusting your promise to hear us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Please stand in body or spirit. 12 The Peace The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. The congregation shares the greeting with one another saying, “Peace be with you,” or similar words. Please be seated. The Offering The Musical Offering “Feed Me, Lord” words and arrangement by Patrick M. Liebergen Please stand in body or spirit. 13 The Offertory Hymn Give Thanks W&P 41 or TFF 292 Reprinted by ownership of sufficient copies or license #, see page 3 14 The Offertory Prayer Let us pray together: God of mercy and grace, the eyes of all wait upon you, and you open your hand in blessing. Fill us with good things at your table, that we may come to the help of all in need, through Jesus Christ, our redeemer and Lord. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right our duty and our joy… (The minister continues with the preface appropriate to the day or season.) …we praise your name and join their unending hymn: The presiding minister continues with the words of institution. 15 The Words of Institution Pastor: Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory; In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor and who, on the cross opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed…. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit be all honor and glory, now and forever. All: Amen The Lord’s Prayer United in Christ let us join hands as we pray the Lord’s Prayer. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. 16 The Communion Distribution Communion will be distributed on the congregational level following the communing of the choir.
