Sports Designed by Sierra Westlake volleyball football Reaching for Respect Timothy Meinzen Advisor In a season at the frustrating middle, the volleyball team is a team looking to break out under its new coach, Kayla Grabler. The Billies are 7 and 8 with an experienced team that longs for more success in the PacWest League where they are 3 and 5. The team has beaten up Waldport and Toledo but struggled against Harrisburg, Santiam Christian and Creswell. The Billies are led by hard-hitting Hailey Bowman and Kiva Perkins. Paisley Barnhart rounds out the senior starters. Jackie Brooks, Ashley Howard and Courtney Cox are junior Hailey Bowman starters who form the backbone. One particularly bright spot is the recognition that our Billies have a combined 3.0 GPA marking them for the Academic All State honor from the Dairy Farmers of Oregon. The Billies are eager and aggressive, and looking to push their way into the post season. Billies are Kings of the Hill Olivia Raimer Reporter 7 soccer Blowing by! The Billies have a flawless record in the PacWest blowing out their opponents by dozens of points. This sets up a titanic clash with arch rival, Santiam Christian this Friday night. The football season started on a low note, however. The Elmira Falcons pushed around the Billies, 31 to 7. With a young, inexperienced offensive and defensive line, it was tough to hold back or push through the Falcons. “Rhyland [Hayter] had no time to do anything because the offensive line couldn’t hold very long,” said one team member. However, the Billies turned it around and the boys fired on all cylinders winning, 34-16 against Regis. cross country Fast and Furious “It was a good comeback against our loss from Elmira” said Brandon Billow. When it came to the game against Glide, the team was ready. The Billies collared the ‘dogs 62 to 21. Jacob Andress (12) made a record of seven touchdowns in a single game. KEZI news reported that Jacob had the game of his life. Next up came the Jefferson game, and the Billies continued their torrential scoring 66 to 26. The Billies have a balanced run and pass attack. Besides battering ram Andress, the Billies have relied on the sure play of several key players. The Billies are ranked 43rd in all State schools and depending upon their game with Santiam Christian, could move much higher. The soccer team is enjoying the benefits of moving to 3-A from 4-A. The Billies have 7 -1-1 record so far this season. Their biggest win was a defanging of the Glide Bulldogs, 7-1 and their only loss was to Junction City 0-1. Eric Spresser (12) leads the team with an amazing 7 goals in four games. Spressor plans to play soccer in college. Senior Marcus Blas’ favorite thing about soccer this year is “that we win!” Captain Trystin Pierzina (11) thinks the team has improved a lot since last year and his happy that he is scoring this year. Another change is that there are more girls joining the “boys” soccer team. Trae Rogers (9) likes that there’s pretty much no drama playing on the team because they’re all pretty nice. Trae looks up Captain Mckynzie Ritchie (12). The other girl on the team is Molly Townley (11). Alternative Sports Sam Dale Candace Joyner Nicholas Cooper and Jonathan Ferguson are the leading runners for the Pleasant Hill cross country team. Sarah Lueders Reporter Pleasant Hill’s fleet Billies are blazing past their opponents in cross country getting a reputation for dominance. Lead by seniors Jonathan Ferguson and Nicholas Cooper, the Billies are in the rarified air of the top ten runners in the State. “Not to sound cocky, but we’re training for State,” Cooper said. “We’re still going to try our hardest at Districts but I think we’re going to win Districts. I feel great going into it and hopefully we’ll win State.”(quotation from Springfield Times, October 13, Matt Singledecker) The Billies began their season playing in the mud. The first of these races was Trask. The team agreed that this race was fun with a lot of mud. “Usually we try to stay away from mud, but this time was different.” said Emma Boys. The second was the Richardson Relays. Lastly, was the North West Classic. Many runners will argue that Cross Country is much more than running. “It is more of a mental thing than a physical thing” said Lydia Richins. The team does more than run to practice for a meet. They also get exercise from challenging strength workouts that leave you sweeting and exhausted. “Why do cross country?” One may ask. Quinn Stearns answered, “I do it because there is no better feeling than the one you get when you finish a run,” Have you ever thought of Sierra Westlake in Dressage which is like danctrying a lesser known sport?
