Special Points of
Interest
The Scout Law reminds us to be “THRIFTY.” In our families, Scouts can be
“THRIFTY” by earning their own camp and program fees, so that the parents don’t
have to pay extra for events, outings, and camp adventures! The Buckskin Council
is pleased to help your Scouts earn their own way by providing the spring product

Schedule your 2015 Family Friends of Scouting Presentations
Family Friends of Scouting is a vital part of sustaining Scouting in our area! Family FOS is an
opportunity for Scouting to report on its successes and needs in our 32 counties, and for families to invest in the future of young people through the BSA. Talk to your District Family
Friends of Scouting Chair or your District Executive about the date for your presentation in the
first few months of 2015.
An unfortunate fact of our current society is that we spend less and less quality time with the people who
are the most important to us—our children. Increasing divorce rates and dual-worker families mean fewer
children receive full-time parental supervision. They have fewer positive role models in their lives. In fact,
studies show that as our media choices have increased since the early 1980s, our time spent together as families has steadily decreased.
Since the inception of the Boy Scouts of America in 1910, one of our main objectives has been to provide
strong role models for youth during their formative years. In years gone by, these people were called neighbors, teachers, and community and religious leaders, as well as Scoutmasters. Today, we call them mentors.
No matter the name or title, what our youth need are caring adults who are strong role models. Each year, more than a million adults
dedicate themselves to the betterment of our nation’s youth by volunteering with the Boy Scouts of America in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Venturing.
However, adults are not the only mentors. The BSA pioneered the concept of peer-to-peer mentoring, or letting youth lead other
youth. When older boys lead and plan activities and campouts, younger Scouts learn from their example. Today, that same concept of
peer-to-peer mentoring is being used in our nation’s schools, as well as Scouting activities.
Too many wrong choices are available for our nation’s youth. They desperately need, and want, our guidance to successfully navigate
the difficult years of adolescence. Being involved in Scouting and mentoring has a powerful impact in the lives of youth. The bottom
line is mentoring improves decision-making, builds confidence, and teaches life lessons. And that is what Scouting has always been
about—preparing America’s youth for the future.
I would like to thank the volunteers in the Buckskin Council for your mentoring of our future leaders.
Good Scouting to you and yours,
Jeffrey L. Purdy
Scout Executive
“This is Scout Country”
SPECIAL THANKS
Volunteers are the heart of scouting and in the Buckskin
Council we have a group who quietly serve you by making
sure the newsletters and other key communications are
prepared, labeled and mailed. It is important to let our
leaders know who these folks are so you can thank them
when you see them.
The person who leads the charge is Bonnie Starling! The
Courier February helpers were Carlton Starr, Darren Francis, Phil Gaarenstroom, Art Altman and Jack Robertson .
We always look forward to seeing these volunteers in the
council office.
The Newsletter is folded on the last Tuesday of each
month, between August and May, starting around 8:30 and
ending around noon. If you would like to join this great
group of people, call the Scout Service Center at 304-3403663 and let us know. We would greatly appreciate your
help!!!!

Buckskin Council Boy Scout Summer Camp
BSR, Camp Chief Logan and Camp Arrowhead
We know that summer camp is the highlight of a Scout’s year. Scouts who experience summer camp are more likely
to stay involved in Scouting for another year. A Unit’s decision on where to go to camp in 2015 will have a lasting effect on the
scouts, well beyond just one summer. At camp, a scout becomes more independent, develops team working skills, and
sharpens problem solving skills. With that in mind, The Buckskin Council Summer Boy Scout summer camp programs purpose is to provide a fun, adventurous summer camp experience filled with personal growth that will long be remembered.
It is the mission of our Summer Camp Program Committee to improve our camping program and provide every camp
participant with a fun camping experience by providing quality programs and resources through the Camp Director and staff. We
constantly strive to have all activities and staff serve to fulfill THE AIMS OF SCOUTING: to build character, to foster citizenship, and to
develop physical, mental, emotional, and moral fitness, by using THE METHODS OF SCOUTING. THE METHODS
OF SCOUTING consists of promoting Scouting Ideals through the Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan, using the Patrol
Method, the Outdoor Program, encouraging Advancement, Personal Growth, Adult Association, Leadership Development, and the Boy Scout Uniform.
You can find copies of all the documents you need to register for camp at the Buckskin Council
office and on the Buckskin Council website, www.Buckskin.org. If you have questions or need more information about the Buckskin Council’s Boy Scout Summer Camp and high adventure opportunities please
contact Jonathan Stevens at [email protected].

District Pinewood Derby
It’s almost race time! The District Pinewood Derby is almost
upon us. Paula Mattox, Charish Holley and Jeremy Sipple
have a wonderful race day planned for all our Cub Scouts and
their families. The race will be held once again at the Maple
View Church of Christ, located next to the Mercer Mall, on
Saturday March 14. Cost is $5.00 per scout. Registration will
begin at 9:00 AM and we will start the races at 10:30 AM. All
boys will race on all the lanes of the track and their times will
be averaged to determine the winners. There will be medals
for all first, second and third place finishers in the different
dens and trophies for overall first, second and third place finishers for the district. There will also be trophies awarded for
each den for Best in Show. The first, second and third place
district winners (as well as overall Pack winners) are eligible to
attend the Council Race, which will be held in Charleston on
April 11. We will also have an outlaw race at the conclusion of
the District race where everyone can participate. All cars must
meet the same requirements that the official cars do except
that they can weigh up to 10 ounces. I hope to see all of our
Cub Scout families at this great event.
Spring Camps
Well, we almost made it through another winter and our
thoughts turn to spring and that means Spring Camping!
Our winter events were great and I know that Dan and
Paula have wonderful Spring camps planned. The Spring
Camporee will be April 24 through the 26 at Camp Roland.
Dan Trent has a great program planned so all our Boy
Scouts need to be there! The Spring family camp will be
May 15 through the 17 and we will have a Hawaiian Theme
(hopefully we’ll have tropical weather to go with it). Please
plan on bringing the boys out for a great time!
Wood Badge
Wood Badge will be March 27-29, 2015 and April 17-19,
2015 at Camp Chief Logan. I encourage all adult leaders
who want to have a wonderful Scouting experience that
you will remember the rest of your life to attend. If you
would be interested in attending the course, please refer to
the Wood Badge Flier in Special Points of Interest in this
Courier. If you have any questions please contact the
Council office or Rosann Brooks 304-881-1042.

BLUE AND GOLD BANQUETS
We are now entering the Blue and Gold Banquet and Pinewood
Derby season! With all of these activities coming up we have an excellent opportunity to deliver the promises of Scouting. If you would
please email Jonathan Stevens [email protected] the
dates and times of your Pinewood Derby and Blue and Gold banquets a representative from the district will try to attend your event.
The sooner you know these dates the better so the district can make
plans to attend on its calendar. The Elk River would also like to
thank all of the Packs and Troops who have agreed to allow the District to give our Family Friends of Scouting Presentation. For
those of you who do not know about Family Friends of Scouting it
is one of the ways that our Council raises money that goes toward
operating costs. The presentation is only 10 minutes long and as
incentives for donating we are offering special Council Shoulder
Patches, and Norman Rockwell Mugs. These presentations in conjunction with the generosity of the parents and volunteers in your
unit go a long way toward making Scouting successful in our area.
Volunteers Needed
The Elk River District is seeking active and interested participants
for the District Committee! If you have expertise in a particular area
of Scouting we would like to invite you to share your ideas, input
and passion with our committee. We have positions available for
finance, Cub Scout and Boy Scout program, camping promotions,
training, product sales, event planning, and commissioner service.
Please feel free to send Jonathan Stevens an email with your area of
interest and a little bit about your scouting and professional background so that you can get involved with our district. Jonathan’s
email address is [email protected] , or feel free to give
Jonathan a call at 304-340-3663 to discuss opportunities within the
District.

Two Roundtables
The Seneca District is geographically the largest district in the
council, making it hard for some of our leaders to attend district
events. To fix this problem, the district committee will now be
offering two roundtables per month, in Beckley and Lewisburg.
The Beckley Roundtable is the best one that offers the up-to-date
information for what is ahead to the Boy Scouters in a break-out
session. The Cub Scout leaders have BOTH Lewisburg AND
Beckley Roundtables to share ideas, receive Leader Specific training and network with problem-solving ideas for their specific
needs. ALWAYS dinner food available...and good eatin'!
Parents and leaders....anyone can come. Questions: Carol
