The Housing Silo is situated on the IJ River, at the tip of the pier,
next to two former grain warehouses (silos) that have been
converted into housing. The 157 apartments, business units and
public spaces, in the Housing Silo, are compressed within a 10
storey high and 20 meters deep urban envelope. The apartments,
rental and owner in different sizes, are stacked, legible on the
façade, each of which is expressed differently. The aim of mixing
functions spatially (commercial units and semi-public spaces were
not to be confined automatically to ground level but distributed
throughout the complex) has not been realized. All commercial
units have been gathered in a clearly recognisable volume. At the
west side is a shared roof terrace for residents, and small boats
can moor between the columns underneath.

In the Houthavens, a former harbour area on the West of the city
centre of Amsterdam, 1000 students will temporarily be housed
here. Until the new housing developments start, these students
will live on a ship (the Rochdale One), in former
asylumseeker-housing and in 715 container-houses, that were
designed bij hvdn architects. The project was designed and built
within 12 months. The architects made a prefabricated system
out of containers of 9 by 3 meters. This system made that the
houses could be built rapidly, they are re-usable and the costs
were kept to a minimum. Six different façades with six different
colours where chosen to make several changing combinations.
Each unit contains a private kitchen, a shower and a toilet. In
the most northern block, at the IJ river is a restaurant and bar.

The neighbourhood Geuzenveld is located in the western garden
cities of Amsterdam. There is plenty of public space available but
most of these green spaces lack grandeur. The project is regarded
to be a 'key-operation within the urban renewal of
Geuzeveld-Slotermeer. The building should provide an
iconographic quality to the neighbourhood which it was lacking
before.’ The housing block is situated at the edge of a park and
consists out of 5 towers, positioned on a deck, carrying a two
level roof plate. The positioning of the towers provides a clear
view from all apartments to the park. Because of the holes, or
empty spaces in-between, the dwellings behind the big block also
still have a view on the park. The title of the project - Parkrand means park-edge.

Amsterdam. Tram line 13 takes you from the Central Train

This housing for elderly people is probably one of the most
published architecture projects of its times and also from
Holland. Its very powerful image is the result of urban policy: the
architects couldn't place all the 100 apartments in a linear
building, because there was a height restriction. Thus the
overhang volumes: all the apartments that couldn't fit into the
linear volume where hang on the northern side, with a east-west
orientation.

The exposition wing of the Van Gogh Museum is designed by
Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. He is mainly known for his
original design for several Japanese museum, and for the airport
in Kuala Lumpur. Characteristic for his work is the use of simple
geometric shapes, like cones, ellipses and squares. The buildings
embody the symbioses between the eastern and western
principles of philosophy and architecture. For the extension to
the Van Gogh museum he started with a very sober design, which
joins the existing museum perfectly. The rational (western)
geometry joins the eastern asymmetry.

The Public Library is the central one of three large new buildings
on the restructured Oosterdokseiland, near the Central Station.
The main shape of the building is attuned to the surroundings:
both the apartments to the west of the library and the street to
the eastmust receive enough daylight. At the same time, situated
as it is beside the open waters of the Oosterdok, the library had
to contribute to an attractive skyline. A raised plinth offers a
refined transitional area between the upper and lower floors, and
the reading and study rooms resemble terraces, arranged around
large voids. The top floor accommodates the library theatre and
conference rooms.

The Conservatorium building, designed by Frits van Dongen, had
to fit into a narrow slot on Oosterdokseiland. The music school
building has a glass façade, which not only lets daylight into the
areas behind, but also serves as a sound barrier. For the same
reason, all corridors are arranged along the façade, while the
functional spaces lie in the core of the building. It houses 5
auditoriums, classrooms and study rooms, a library and offices.

Located at the head of Oostelijke Handelskade, the
‘Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ’ is the new home of two organizations
devoted to modern and non-western music. Each organisation
has been given its own architectural identity inside the new
building by placing its concert hall in clearly separate volumes.
Eye-catcher and unifying element is the gigantic roof. At its
headend, the building features a large open space which
functions as a public plaza. On the waterside lies a wide square
with an outdoor café on the water. The 24 meter high glass
façade provides a panoramic view of the river IJ.

At the southern entrance of the Java-eiland, the large housing
project of the Swiss architects Diener and Diener, is divided into
two parts and links Java (west) and KNSM (eastern part of the
island) with each other. Both are made out of red bricks, but
differ in shape and size. West is the larger of the two:
‘Langhaus’. ‘Langhaus’ has large ‘gaps’ on each side of the block.
It is 8 stories high. The lower part, on the east side, is called
‘Hofhaus’. It is a square shaped block, with a restaurant and
ateliers on the ground floor. This project raised very different
reactions: some find it the ‘little ugly duckling’ of the island,
others think this is a masterpiece since it is very ‘quiet’.

The masterplan for the conversion of KNSM-island consists of a
central boulevard, along which large residential blocks are
aligned, interspersed with some old buildings, such as a former
harbour canteen. Housing block Piraeus, recognizable from afar
due to its sloping roof, measures 170 by 57 meters. It comprises
330 apartments, commercial spaces, an underground parking
garage and two enclosed public spaces. It is wrapped around a
19th century office building, which now contains appartments.
The south side of Piraeus is 4 stories high, the north 8. The block
counts 150 different types of apartments, 95 % of which are
social housing. All façades are different in rhythm, details and
openings.

This seventy meters high, 20 stories apartment tower is situated
on the dam towards the KNSM Island, in the former docklands,
east of the centre of Amsterdam. The tower has a regular facade
composition with a diagonal window pattern. Several 'holes' in the
building give it a strong sculpturally and generate a variety of 20
different dwelling types. The tower has been sculpted differently
at each side. The building works as an orientating element in the
new dockland area. The 3 stories plinth of the tower consists of a
fitness club, roof garden, commercial retail spaces and a parking
garage.

The Whale

The Whale is one of three big “meteorites” which have landed
in-between the lowrise row houses on the Islands of Borneo and
Sporenburg. Thanks to its sculptural shape, this building by Frits
van Dongen is a real landmark. Inside are 194 apartments and
1100 m2 office and retail space. Underneath is a large parking
garage with 179 places. The traditional closed block (100 by 60
m) has been transformed by lifting the two, so the public space
flows through underneath. Inside the block is a private garden,
designed by West 8. The apartments are accessed from galleries
running along the inner façade.

Two red steel bridges span the water between the residential
islands Sporenburg and Borneo. The pedestrian bridge is very high
and designed as an architectural walk, taking pedestrians to a
height where they have a spectacular view over the surrounding
patio houses and also allowing sail boats to access a small
marina. The lower bridge at the opposite end of the harbour is
made for disabled persons, buggies and bikes.

How to get there
The nicest way to go to the Eastern Docklands, is to take the
boat from the Central Station to the Java-island. It leaves from
behind the central station, at pier 7. It's a free ride, and takes
about 10 min, to the head of the Java-island. From there it's
about 15 min walking to the KNSM-island and 20 min to
Sporenburg and Borneo.

This housing complex Milos is part of a larger mixed-used
development around the Science Park Amsterdam, located in the
neighbourhood Watergraafsmeer. The Science Park is transformed
into an international knowledge centre, and next to new
educational buildings and related companies, the area is
completed with housing. Milos is the most western building with a
plinth of 4 to 5 layers, and a 45m high tower. The complex gives
the impression of a modern castle, surrounded by water.
Pedestrians and cyclists enter the building by passing a bridge.
The closed inner courtyard is furnished with wooden floors.
Because of the situation next to the railway tracks, the building
has a double façade: a glass screen is placed in front of the
thermal skin, and serves as a sound barrier.

This pavilion is part of a renovation Steven Holl did for Het
Oosten, a housing developer in Amsterdam. Since a merger in
2008 Het Oosten is part of Stadgenoot.The old brick building
(1889) on the De Singel canal in Amsterdam was originally built as
a storage for medicine. With this pavilion the housing developer
wanted to explain its views on sustainable building with the use
of ornaments. The pavilion is 285 m2 big, and 7 meter high. It can
house gatherings from 20 up to 280 persons. The pavilion is not
open to the public and is currently used by the people who work
at Stadgenoot, for their lunch breaks.

At the crossing of the Nieuwe Herengracht and the Entrepotdok
the Botania apartment complex rises out of the water. The
autonomous brick façade refers to the Amsterdam canal houses
and the composition of white wooden window frames with green
glass is a modern version of the traditional urban block. It has 40
apartments that enclose an inner courtyard. The 1000 m2 of
commercial space on the ground floor is at certain places set
back, behind the main façade, to create entrances and public
space.

The Viñoly tower is part of the Mahler 4 complex on the
Amsterdam Zuidas (south-axe). This is the first project Viñoly
completed in Europe. Next to this tower, the complex consists
out of office buildings by Toyo Ito, Michael Graves, Architecten
Cie and Skidmore, Owings & Merill. The overall masterplan was
designed by Dutch architect Pi de Bruijn of the Architecten Cie.
The construction of this 91m high tower if made out of steel, with
a concrete core for stability. Very recognizable characteristics of
this building are the carved flight stairs and the prominent
façade-profiles. The Dutch designing counterpart was Van den
Oever, Zaaijer & partners.

How to get there
Take the train, or the subway to the WTC trainstation. Mahler4 is
situated at the best site on the A10 ring road, with easy access
from two exits (S108 and S109). There are optimal traffic
facilities, most of which will be at underground level in future.
Close to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, with the high speed train on
the doorstep. By tram it’s only a short ride to the Dam or
Amstelveen. There are plenty of parking places (capacity for
1,950 cars, underground)

These are 28 single family houses, all situated on the ground
floor. They all have their entrance on the street side
(Borneokade) but when you walk by, you would hardly see that
there are indeed 28 front doors. Half of them lay behind the first
row of houses, reached through a sort of alley. These houses have
their backside on the waterfront of the canal. Go see the satellite
images to get an idea of the composition.

On the former NDSM-wharf, an industrial area, now transformed
into a new-media park with upcoming events and creative
companies, these 380 living-cabins have temporarily been placed
for students. The containers will stay here (at least) until 2010.
Each box has its own services like a kitchen, bathroom, toilet,
tv-connection and internet, measuring 24 m2. One box costs
about 350 euro to rent, all inclusive. The students have a larger
communal space for parties, gatherings, or, just to get together.
Another shared facility is the wash-space, to do the laundry, and
a container for garbage. The ferry-boat takes the students to the
Central Train station. According to the Duwo, "there really is no
need to take the boat to the centre," the next-door IJ-halls offer
several different activities, parties and large festivals. The
former ship-yard hall has a large skate-ramp with bars,
restaurants, and even MTV has found its new headquarters in one
of the halls next door.

The Cancer Center Amsterdam (CCA) is part of and built in the
direct vicinity of the VU Medical Centre (VUmc). It is an
academical cancer expertise centre for research and treatment.
The CCA is financed mainly through private means and therefore
built their semi-permanent housing with prefabricated building
units that look like stacked containers. The building has 7
storeys, each covering some 1425 m2. The whole complex was
built within a year. The team of project members supported the
CCA by delivering the building system and their services for
cost-price.

How to get there
The closest train station is Zuid-WTC, from which it is about 15
minutes walking. You can also take tram/subway 50 to the stop
at Amstelveenseweg. From here it's about 10 minutes walking.
Tram 16 and 24 leave from Central Station and stop directly at
the Vumc.

In 2007 it was decided that the secondary school 'Het 4e
Gymnasium' will be located in the new district of Amsterdam's
Houthavens to the west of the centre. Until that time, for the
coming 5 - 10 years, this interim building is used. To help it fit in
with the adjacent temporary container student housing and so it
can be used afterwards at different places, it was built using a
modular system. To create an enclosed inner space in this open
area, it's been built around a courtyard. The sports facilities with
a gym and a large fitness suite are behind the main school. This
way, all the qualities of the Houthavens district are well used. As
well as classrooms, the 4000m2 building has modern facilities,
such as a media centre and a large auditorium. The façade has 2
elements that help intensify the character of the building; the
flat aluminium façade of the inner courtyard, which also runs
through to the outside, and the wooden façade which has been
developed more spatially and in depth.
