PLAY 6 AT 4 Since 2013, the South Florida PGA has conducted an annual “Women’s Golf Day” to promote the game of golf to women in south Florida. Following an extremely successful Women’s Golf Day at Miromar Lakes Golf Club in 2014, the South Florida PGA received feedback from the participants wanting more opportunities to play golf with other women and have a social component similar to the Women’s Golf Day. Working with Ken McMaster, PGA Director of Golf at Miromar Lakes Golf Club, the South Florida PGA created “Play 6 at 4” as a way to keep those women who participated in Women’s Golf Day engaged in the game. “Play 6 at 4” included 6 holes of golf with a 4-person scramble format followed by a social hour including drinks and appetizers. This year there will be a total of 5 events all held at Miromar Lakes Golf Club. The goal of “Play 6 at 4” is to provide a fun, social golf experience. One event is being held per month between December-April. The event in Januarysawafullfieldof72participants. With the success this program has experienced, the SFPGA is looking forward to continuing to provide the same opportunities next year. If you are interested in hosting one of these “Play 6 at 4” events, please contact Tori Stock at [email protected]. “It has been so incredibly well received, very easy to coordinate and has had a tremendous impact on the ladies as well as our facility” Ken McMaster, PGA. The Rule would raise the salary threshold under which salaried executive, administrative and professional workers are entitled to overtime pay. The threshold would increase from $455/week ($23,660 a year) to $970/week ($50,440 a year). The PGA of America collaborated with allied golf organizations (CMAA, GCSAA, NCA, and NGCOA) to submit industry-wide comments to the Department of Labor, prior to the Sept. 4 deadline. Following the Department of Labor’s analysisofthewrittencommentstotheproposedrule,afinalrulewilllikelybeissuedin2016withanaccelerated implementation period of approximately 90 days. At this time of year when strategic planning and budgeting is done for employees and facilities, it is important to be aware of this regulation and the impending implementation. The program continued to experience tremendous growth in 2015 thanks to the involvement of more than 60 PGA members and over 650 junior golfers. 2016 looks to expandevenmorewithbothasummerandfallseasonofferedforlocalPGAProfessionalsandareateams. The 2016 schedule will begin in May with a few weekend “warm-up” tournaments for teams already established in select counties. The full summer season will begin the week of June 13-17 and conclude the week of August 8-12. The fall season will begin in late September and conclude in early November. Leagues are formed by area facilities and teams and separated by county. For most leagues, there will be 5-8 tournaments during the summer season and 5-6 tournaments during the fall season. Tournaments during May and September-November will be held on a weekend day (Saturday or Sunday). Tournaments during the summer months (June-August) will be held during the weekdays and some weekends. Tournaments will be held in the geographic area that your team’s facility is located (no more than 15-20 miles away). PGA Professionals are encouraged to create teams and participate in this Section wide program. This is a great opportunity to grow your junior program, showcase your facility, and expand overall revenue & clientele. In addition, for each season, PGA Professionals that coach a team will earn three (3) PGA MSR credits in the Required Category. For more information about Team Golf please contact Tyler Wolford at 561-729-0544 or [email protected]. More information about Team Golf can also be found HERE. 16 rules with chris THE THINGS THAT GUIDE US Do you remember why you first picked up a golf club or who brought you to the game? Maybe you grew up in a family that had a membership at a local country club or lived down the street from a golf course. Maybe a friend took you to a driving range or you saw a professional tournament on television. One of the most uniquely fascinating parts of this game is that it brings people from all walks of life together under a common set of relatable principles. These principles are strong enough to transcend language and cultural barriers and ultimately serve as the common thread that ensures that we are all playing the same game. Richard S. Tufts wrote a book called, “The Principles Behind the Rules of Golf” which touches on this common thread and gives thereaderalookatthesynergisticcultureofthedefinitions, rulesofplay, decisionsandetiquette.Tuftsexplains, “Golf, like life, is full of breaks. It is a game of chance, one of its fascinations being in ‘the way the ball bounces.’ To be able to accept the breaks and still go on playing your game has always been one of the tests of a true champion, a test which it is more important to meet successfully in golf than in any other sport”. In life as in sport we deal with a variety of factors that we do or do not have control over. A player can hit a ball down the center of the fairway and it may roll into a divot. On the contrary, a player can hit a ball into a heavily wooded area and the ball may ricochet back into the fairway. “The way the ball bounces” is an important factor in this game but what Tufts explains to us is that it isn’t nearly as important as our ability to accept the lie regardless of the stroke. When we look at the Rules of Golf it can be very easy to get lost in the references and great detail in which they are written. Let’s remember that we play a very simple game and the only purpose these Rules serve is to ensure we are all playing the same simple game. The only purposes of the underlying principles are to aid in the understanding of the Rules that guide us. Ultimately it can be broken down to this underlying statement, “You put your ball in play atthestartofthehole, youplaythecourseasyoufindit, you play only your own ball and you do not touch it until you lift it from the hole”. If you take nothing else away from this, understand that this is the foundation upon which golf is played. Nothing can serve as a substitute for the Rules of Golf or their Decisions but these principles are intended to serve as a guide to help us understand. Tufts references these principles as “steel rods which lie below the surface of reinforced concrete, serve to bind together brittle material and to give it strength”. The Rules of Golf may be altered and changed but what is essential to the game is that these “steel rods” are unchanging. The principles that we learned at that local country club or driving range or from watching a professional tournament are the same principles we instill in those learning through us. We are all very familiar with the countless displays of character brought to us on Sundays in the drama that unfolds within the championships we lose ourselves in. Highly unsung are the millions of non-televised success stories that start with this game and are ultimately grounded in these principles. The ultimate question then is not howcanwebenefitfromthembutwhoelsecanwepassthemalongto?Whatsuccessstorieswillyoubeapartof? 17 new & upcoming UPCOMING SECTION EVENTS AllianzPre-Qualifier Fountains CC-North January 28 HondaClassicPre-Qualifier Ironhorse Country Club February 17 AllianzEventQualifier Fountains CC-North February 2 HondaClassicPre-Qualifier Fountains Country Club - North WycliffeGolf&CountryClub February 18 ACEGroupPre-Qualifier Stoneybrook GC of Estero February 4 ACEGroupEventQualifier Verandah Golf Club February 9 JuniorChallengeTourEvent#1 Sandpiper Golf Club - Club Med February 6-7 HondaClassicPre-Qualifier Fountains CC-North February 16 JuniorChampionshipTour#1 Fountains CC - North February 20-21 HondaClassicMondayQualifier Mayacoo Lakes CC February 22 JuniorChallengeTourEvent#2 Sandridge Golf Club March 5-6 NationalCarRentalFoundationPro-Am Fort Lauderdale Country Club March 14 EARN MSR CREDITS Looking for ways to earn more MSR credits?
