This graceful waterfall marks the turnaround for all but the hardiest day hiker, or the backpacker. Here is a brief description if you decide to keep going. After the falls, you head up again across several small meadows and through thick timber. You will then traverse a mixture of timber and open, rocky areas. At mile 13, there is another, unnamed, waterfall. Two and a half miles later, you will cross Ishawooa Creek again, and then start the steep ascent to Ishawooa Pass. After another 1.5 miles, you will reach the top - seventeen miles from the Ishawooa trailhead. In front of you will be the vast Thoroughfare, and beyond, Yellowstone Park. Were you to continue down the far side of the pass and another 17 miles, you would find yourself as far as you can get from a road in the lower 48 states. If you continue across Ishawooa Creek, the trail meanders a bit and then gets serious about going up. There are several spots in the next section of the trail that are high on the northern slope of the valley, and so have some pretty remarkable exposure. The Forest Service has recently made several repairs in this section to take care of washouts. Once you reach the gate at the top of the slope, things change dramatically. The trail drops into the spectacular Ishawooa Creek drainage. Initially wide open, the drainage narrows and becomes heavily timbered about two miles from the car. The excellent, well-maintained trail rolls up and down for the next two miles - once approaching Ishawooa Creek before heading back up - until you reach the first crossing of the creek. Most of the summer, this is a relatively easy crossing. In May and June, however, high water can make this spot dangerous, and a good spot to turn back for the car. You will have walked four miles so far. The first mile of this hike is why you will probably have the whole thing to yourself. Start on the obvious trail that goes immediately uphill. The trail will go steadily up through a somewhat desolate patch of badland dirt. Don’t sweat the lack of beauty going up - it’s much better on the way home. The hike starts thirty two miles southwest of Cody. Take WY 291, known locally as the South Fork road, past ranches and homes until you cross the South Fork of the Shoshone River. The trailhead is just past the bridge on the right. There are several spots for horse trailers as well as lots of parking. If you are hiking, make sure that you don’t park in the horse trailer spots. The Ishawooa Trail (or Ishawooa Creek Trail, depending on who you talk to) is one of the most remarkably diverse hikes in the entire Greater Yellowstone area. It starts off on hot, dry badland-type clay, and ends at spectacular pass overlooking some of the most remote country in the lower 48. In between, it traverses sagebrush plateaus, heavy timber, rivers, waterfalls and more. No matter what you are looking for, the Ishawooa trail probably has it. GET READY FOR ADVENTURE! (307) 587-9517 | 1131 SHERIDAN AVE. | WWW.SUNLIGHTSPORTS.COM A couple of important caveats - this is wild country that contains a wide variety of wildlife, including grizzly bears. You should hike here, but make sure that you don’t go without a friend and some bear spray, as well as the standard hiking essentials. If you need more info on this trip or the equipment that you need, call Sunlight Sports at 307-587-9517. Local archaeologist Bob Edgar created Trail Town by moving 26 buildings built between 1879 and 1901 to the location that was once the site of Old Cody City. Walk the boardwalks of these fascinating buildings for a step back in time. Among the buildings are an old saloon, livery barn, blacksmith shop, general stores, post office and schools. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’s“Hole-in-the-Wall”cabin is also located there. See over 100 horse drawn vehicles and the original wagon trail. The “Museum of the Old West” houses historic Plains Indians materials, guns of the frontier, carriages, clothing and many other relics of the past. Jeremiah “Liver-Eating”Johnson, the mountain man, is buried in the cemetery along with several other notorious Western characters. The Dam is a concrete arch placed near the head of the Shoshone River Canyon. The Dam stands 325 feet high, measured from bedrock. Its hydraulic height is 233 feet; its width at base is 108 feet and at top is 10 feet. The length at the crest is 200 feet and the elevation there is 5,370 feet above sea level. A measured 82,900 cubic yards of concrete were poured during the dam’s construction. The reservoir standing behind the dam is also named Buffalo Bill. It has a capacity of 439,800 acre feet of water with a shoreline of about 20 miles. The Buffalo Bill Dam is one of the earliest achievements of the Bureau of Reclamation and was built in the ‘’Arch and CrownCantilever Method.’’ The original name was Shoshone Dam. The entire project, including irrigation canals extending into Montana 70 or more miles from the dam site, watered lands, power plants, spillways, and diversion tunnels, is named the Shoshone Project. Almost three decades after its construction the title of dam and reservoir was changed by Act of Congress to Buffalo Bill. This was done in order to honor the memory of Col. William Frederick Cody better known as Buffalo Bill. The building of Buffalo Bill Dam cost $1,000,000. Its value and significance to the local area and the State of Wyoming includes the value of annual crops raised on almost 100,000 acres of rich agricultural lands, the wealth resulting from industrial and municipal waters made available, and the further wealth resulting from electric energy furnished to individuals, communities, and industries.
