® Katelyn Reed, age four, and Maria Shriver, Mother of Four, Journalist, Author and First Lady of California Easy-To-Use Toy Selection Guide Dear Parents and Friends, At Toys“R”Us, children are the inspiration for what we do every day–offer the best and broadest selection of toys available for children of every ability. Each year, we have the unique opportunity to present a collection of toys for children with special needs, appropriately selected for their play and skill-building value. Our commitment to fulfilling that goal continues with this 15th edition of the Toys“R”Us Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids. Once again, we are proud to be supported by the experts at the National Lekotek Center, renowned for their work in evaluating the best play opportunities for differentlyabled children. To make your toy choices easier, specific symbols indicate each toy’s skill-building benefits. Also, for the first time, we’ve included a helpful index on pages 52-55 to guide your toy selections according to skill categories. With every issue of the Toys“R”Us Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids we strive to help meet the needs of special children, their parents, caregivers and therapists. We sincerely hope that we’ve again succeeded in providing you with a convenient way to find toys that enrich the play experience for your child. Sincerely, Jerry Storch Chairman and CEO Toys“R”Us, Inc. 2 Find the right fit between a child’s abilities and stimulating toys that will promote development. Use these symbols to guide your selection. Auditory Fine Motor (Hearing, Listening) (Grasping, Hand-Eye Coordination) Language Social Skills (Speaking, Reading, Writing) (Relationships, Interaction) Visual Self Esteem (Seeing, Perceiving) (Self-Respect, Personal Satisfaction) Tactile Creativity (Skin Awareness of Touch & Texture) (Imagination, Arts, Music) Gross Motor Thinking (Large Muscle Movement) (Color Matching, Counting, Cause & Effect) m Skill-Building Toy Finder Index Located at the end of the guide on pages 52–55, our Skill-Building Toy Finder Index places every toy into separate skill-building categories, to help choose appropriate toys for your child’s specific needs and interests. Dear Parents and Friends, As many of you know, my mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, started the Special Olympics, the largest sports organization in the world for the intellectually disabled. Through the Special Olympics, I had the great opportunity to view firsthand how children’s spirits can be lifted by exploring their capabilities. I’m sure you’ll agree, there’s an inspiring sense of victory and pride when a child with special needs meets a challenge. That rewarding feeling can be experienced during playtime as well. Within this guide, Toys“R”Us has gathered a collection of toys that offer entertaining ways to build skills, teach cause and effect, stimulate role play and more. These toys help to empower differentlyabled kids, encouraging them with a “can-do” attitude in a world that too often assumes they cannot. Over the years, this guide has become a must-have for anyone who’s admired a special child’s incredible determination to succeed, to learn and to play. I am honored to be this year’s spokesperson for the 2007 Toys“R”Us Toy Guide for Differently-Abled Kids. Because all children are deserving of victories… and because every child, no matter their level of ability, holds great promise.
