The organization is supported primarily by membership dues and other income substantially related to its purpose. Our organization covers 6 New England states and we support our members by exhibiting at trade shows and conferences, and by providing educational and networking opportunities. Whether you’re an experienced publisher with many titles, or a newer publisher with one book, or a vendor that supports the publishing field, you’ll come to enjoy our active group and the camaraderie and business growth opportunities that come with it! We also welcome authors who self-publish to our group. At IPNE, we’ve added new benefits, grown our annual conference, spread our reach. With our new board in place, we are moving forward to bring even more benefits to our growing number of members. Our first book awards brought in stacks of books to new readers with the winners announced at our conference, Friday evening. With this success, our second Book Awards will be a “don’t miss” event. The strong local-group presence established in Metro Boston is thriving. Our website is continuously updated with new information. Our IPNE Secretary, Charlotte Pierce, holds weekly Face the Book and Indie Office Hour sessions on Google Hangouts promoting IPNE books and authors. Our Twitter and Facebook pages are kept current, as well as our presence on Google+ that connects IPNE throughout the online publishing community. There is a blog on our website where members can join in the conversation. You need to log into your account to do so, but please do if you have something to offer! The well-established IPNE Catalog is an important marketing tool to reach New England Bookstores, librarians, and the general publishing community. We continue to work hard to be flexible, open to members suggestions, efforts and interests, to remain accessible and visible across the region, and build the capacity of our members to succeed in their publishing and authoring efforts. If you have new ideas and suggestion for services or would like to volunteer in our work, please let me know. I look forward to meeting you soon at our future events. Have an excellent, successful year and we wish you great publishing success. ndependent Publishers of New England is a dynamic group of people with at least one common interest: books. Be it printing, editing, writing, publishing, or any of the many myriad other steps words undergo to become books, IPNE is proud to have a hand in every aspect of the publishing world. And that role is only going to become more prevalent throughout 2014. This year promises to be one of opportunity for each and every member of IPNE. Through strengthening existing relationships with affiliate groups and fostering new opportunities to connect with others, we are able to more closely unite our members with others in publishing as a way to improve educational and networking opportunities. We are also working to extend discounts to IPNE members from various vendor members and other service providers. By offering our members these publishing, printing, and editing services at a discount, we look forward to maintaining the quality of independent publishing that our readers have come to expect. Not only are we continuing to foster connections, but we are also increasing the benefits available to IPNE members. This year also promises to be one of change for IPNE. Our goal is to increase member involvement and to offer you—the member—the opportunity to tell us what you need. This is a member-driven organization. Getting our books out to the world starts with us, independent people with goals, dreams, and a vision. I look forward to finding out just how IPNE can better serve you, and to continue to give you the resources you need while consistently offering new ones. Reaching the world starts with each other. We’re in this together. She is very special. She takes you on an amazing adventure. As you travel with her, thanks to a very big-hearted woman named Mollie you will learn that pigs are smart, caring, and very social animals that can become very attached to people if given the chance. Willow-Mia Pig gives readers a whole new appreciation of the importance of treating animals with kindness. Willow-Mia Pig feels very lucky to be “1 in 100 million” and she hopes that when it comes to animals, you, too, will “dare to care.” BO W E N G N I T I C X E AN ! S R E D A E R G N U O OK FOR Y “This uplifting book celebrates kindness and tells the story of what a few people can do to change the world. Families will love its undeniable charm and the incredible story of compassion.” — Alexis C. Fox, Humane Society of the United States Like many who so generously answer pleas that come across local television stations, Nancy responded to a news broadcast about a pig, now Willow-Mia Pig, who was found on the side of Route 495 in Massachusetts in 2012. After seeing Willow-Mia Pig through to a safe haven, Nancy was inspired by Willow-Mia Pig’s journey and decided to share it with children. Her goal is to ensure that both children and adults become more aware of the importance of treating animals with love and kindness. Nancy continues to surround herself with others who “dare to care,” and her contagious enthusiasm has created a tremendous groundswell of support to see that farms be held accountable to certain standards when caring for animals. Based on her extensive experience in publishing as an author, editor, book designer, marketing specialist and publisher, Sonja Hakala has put together a workshop that shines a bright light on the advantages and disadvantages of each of the major publishing options for contemporary writers. The goal of this workshop is to provide writers with enough information to publish their work economically, sensibly, and securely. Tom Woll Taking Advantage of Changing Markets: How to Run Your Own Stimulus Program For Financial Success While publishing markets are changing around us, there is actually a fair amount of stability in the industry. With a solid understanding of the publishing markets, you can target your publishing strategy to take advantage of them. This session teaches you what to look for and how to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your publishing program, how to review and understand your income statement, and how to best leverage your products for long-term success. 5:30–6:00 Tim Brookes and Taylor Covington The Publishing Revolution and the Champlain College Publishing Initiative Over the past four years, while the industry has been crying doom and gloom, we have engaged over 400 students in more than 60 acts of publishing—experimenting with print, video, audio, interactive iBooks, web entities and live events, bringing the excitement back into publishing. And we haven’t even launched the Pub Bus yet. We talk about taking a flying leap into the turbulent lake of contemporary publishing and report on what we have found. 6:00 Book Awards Ceremony 6:30–8:00 Reception and Celebration, Book signing, and Meet the vendors Saturday morning 8:00 – 9:00 Registration/Exhibits/Vendors — Continental Breakfast 8:45 – 9:00 Welcome/ Announcements 9:00 – 9:20 Keynote Address–SEO opportunities with Eric Enge How can Indie publishers use content marketing to build their visibility? Learn from the example of Stone Temple Consulting that has been built from the ground up using only content marketing to build its brand, reputation, and customer base. STC CEO Eric Enge will share his company’s experiences as well as outline tips on how Indie publishers can use content marketing for themselves. 9:30–10:20 Jessica Swift Editing—What and Why? Charlotte Pierce Social Media Marketing Everyone knows they need an editor, right? Wrong. Many writers think if their manuscript is read by their mother/English teacher/friend, it’s good enough. But is it? This session will address and explain not only the need for editors in today’s world of independent publishing, but also what you should look for in an editor and the various types of edits that are available. There will be time for a question-and-answer period as well. Social media is the best marketing tool in history–and it’s largely free. Learn strategies for engaging readers and building a following; techniques for each network; and a list of apps and tools to streamline and coordinate your message. Rise above the noise with a well-planned social media message. You can do this! 10:30–11:20 Kim MacQueen The new Triad: publisher/ publishing services/client The self-publishing revolution offers a new, broader and more flexible role for the publisher—as a provider of publishing services for the self-publishing author. But what new forms of negotiation does this involve, and what new demands does it place on the publisher-client relationship? 11:30–12:20 Tom Campbell & Carter Holliday Publishing/Printing Options What are your choices when you want to produce a physical book? The traditional way is to print thousands of copies, and have a distributor deal with the bookstores and buyers. This is a way to maximize your profits and it works very well if you have a book that will sell out at least the copies you had printed. Alternatively, if you are speculating on how many you can sell, perhaps Print on Demand is the way to go. Kate Sullivan The Future Is Now: Demystifying Digital Print still rules, but everyone’s talking about pixels. With eBooks now making up nearly 30% of the book market, going digital isn’t a trend: it’s a fact of life for publishers. But digital doesn’t have to mean complicated or expensive. Get an overview of digital publishing trends, techniques, and best practices, and discuss how having a digital strategy can benefit independent publishers of all sizes. Jessica Swift Sarah Frazier/Alison Atondo/ Power of Blogs: Tours & Reviewers Jeremy Allmendinger Book bloggers are the “new” The Website in the Stream gatekeepers in today’s publishing environment. Learn how bloggers help you in your book marketing endeavors, what NOT to do when approaching them, and how to form valuable and lasting relationships. We will examine what a blog tour really is, how you can decide if it’s right for you, and how you can effectively participate in them. Angela Bole Understanding metadata/BISAC Metadata is what makes the world go ‘round these days. You need to have the right metadata on your websites, and in the description of your books. That’s how you get discovered and found in searches. If you don’t have the right metadata, your book is lost. With it, it can be found in searches everywhere. 11 The author/publisher website should never stand alone; it should be part of a comprehensive, interactive digital strategy. But what does that actually mean? A case study of two book websites in theory and practice. Martin Simpson The Stratospheric Website Publishers’ websites tend to be ten years behind the times, mere digital billboards or flat-screen catalogues. What upper-level functions can a well-designed website offer, and how hard are they to build and maintain? This extraordinary session will bring you up to date on all the possibilities. Saturday afternoon 12:30–1:20 Buffet Lunch 1:30–2:20 Special Address by Maung Nyeu—Publishing to Change the World Maung Nyeu, a doctoral student at Harvard, was born in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, a forested upland region in southern Bangladesh. He is a member of one of 13 indigenous peoples in this heavily militarized region whose cultures are denied or suppressed by the government. In an extraordinary act of courage and dedication, he has created a school where indigenous children can be educated in their own languages, and (in collaboration with students from Champlain College) is in the process of creating the first illustrated schoolbooks in the languages of the region. He will speak about his own dysfunctional educational experience in Bangladesh and the challenges of trying to revive endangered cultures and their spoken and written languages. 2:30–3:20 Jenny Hudson Crowd-Fund Your Book Not everyone has the money to spend to pay for professional book design and editing, and those that do worry that they will emerge into a vacuum where their investment will be lost. As a result, many under-invest in professional manuscript preparation, and others opt out of publishing completely. What if authors could connect with readers before their book is published and use that to fund the book? Learn how to use Kickstarter, Crowdfundr and other platforms do it. Chris Kenneally Challenges of Copyright in the Digital Age Margot Mayor Trailers/Videos, What works and what doesn’t If you’ve ever been puzzled by copyright questions, don’t miss this opportunity to learn about copyright and expand your understanding of your rights and responsibilities when it comes to intellectual property. Not only will you get answers to your copyright questions in the digital age, but also you will learn how to minimize your risk of illegal content use. Is getting attention good enough? and what would actually drive sales? A critique of a wide array of trailer videos, for books and beyond. Brian Jud Selling Outside the Stores Lindsy Parker & Judith Rosen Traditional PR &Marketing Mike Garris The Book, The Movie Bookstores and online retailers are not the only ways to sell books. There are corporate sales, the one-time, noreturn dream sales that make or break a book. Learn from the expert. Until social media, marketing meant (and still means) planning your marketing well ahead of the book’s publication date. From 4-6 months before pub date, Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs) are sent out to Publisher’s Weekly, Library Journal and other relevant book reviewers, giving them time to review your book by publication date. Learn how it is done right from an Lindsy, the expert, and from Judith Rosen of PW, who sees the best and the worst. Learn what works best. Quality video production can cost thousands of dollars. Now that you know what works and what doesn’t from Margot’s session, here’s how to conceive, and create, and use the video book trailer. And it won’t cost you a quarter of a million. Watch with a trained eye and see if a trailer makes sense for you (or just have a good time watching). 3:30–4:20 12 Speakers Angela Bole Before she became IBPA’s executive director, she was deputy executive director of the Book Industry Study Group, Inc.
