TriVista Technologies,
Inc.™ has written a
shareware program
called "Paper
PhotoCube". We'll show
you how to use it to
make cool looking
"picture cubes" from your
digital photos. It's very easy; you just drag and drop each
image, one at a time, to where you want it on the cube. The
program automatically resizes and crops your images to fit
the sides of the cube. It even lets you save an electronic
version of your cube that you can easily e-mail to family and
friends.
These cubes can be used for
countless things, such as:
● Gifts
● Displays
● Craft projects
● Ornaments
PhotoCube uses a "photo
friendly" file format. That means if you set your Kodak or
other digital cameras for the ".jpg" (or "jpeg") format, you can
use photos from them without doing anything special to them.
So lets "get cubing!"
Here's how-to-do-it!

Lessons in this chapter
1. School Reports
• Projects for School
Imagine your teacher has
asked you to do a report on a
subject you're studying in
class. You thought you would
not only write it, but also add
charts and pictures.
& Home
• Color Basics
• Related Links
Chapters in this book
Chapter I
Youth / Teens
Maybe in the past you've done this by cutting pictures from a
magazine and pasting them onto the pages of the
report. Of course, you wrote that report by hand.
Chapter II
Home / Family
Now you can do all that cutting and pasting, as
well as the writing, on the computer.
Chapter III
Advanced Amateurs
Begin the same way you begin any research
project, with research! You can often use the
same sources to find both the information and the images
you're going to use.
Chapter IV
Business /
Professionals
Chapter V
Teachers / Leaders
But since you're going to use the computer for this project,
consider electronic sources as well as books. For example,
check out the encyclopedias
available on-line, as well as CDs on
the specific subject. There may also
be Web sites about your subject.
No doubt you'll find a ton of useful
information, plus lots of interesting
pictures. Then, following the
directions for the computer software
you use, you can copy the pictures
you want from the CD (or download
them from a web site) and paste them into the pages you write.
Some software lets you
manipulate the pictures. You can
trim them, removing things you
don't want, and change their size
and shape so they fit well and look
nice on the page.

Of course, you can't simply copy other people's work. it's a form
of cheating, and it's illegal. Plagiarism That's called "plagiarism"
is when you copy someone else's
words or ideas without giving them
credit.
In your report, you must say where
you get your information and ideas
from, this is called
footnoting. Then you
have to rewrite the
information, putting
it in your own words.

Pictures are usually copyrighted, which means you can't use
them at all without permission from the artist or photographer.
But many Web sites, encyclopedias on CD, and other CDs, do
let you copy their pictures for a school report, if you say where
they came from in your bibliography.
There's another important source of
pictures, and you can use these
whenever you want with no problem:
pictures you take yourself!
Chapter V
Teachers / Leaders
A digital camera enables you to
download the pictures directly from
the camera into the computer. Then you paste them into your
report, and manipulate them, just like pictures from a CD.
These options are available on Picture
CD, Picture Disk, or PhotoNet online.
Think about your subject, and you'll find
ideas about where to take good pictures.
Are you writing about something
scientific? Try the local science or natural
history museum or planetarium. They
may have exciting displays on your topic.

Creating a PhotoCube
• Projects for School
1. First, download a copy of
Paper PhotoCube. You can do
it by clicking here: ppc11.zip
(it's 5.59 MB and may take up
to 30 min. to download , but
it's well worth it). This is only a
demo version that gives you
three trial cubes. If you like it
and want a full copy, go to:

2. Next, create a directory on
your hard drive called "cube
images." Then, copy the
images you want on your cube
from your camera or other
digital source to this directory.
A cube has 6 sides, but with
the demo version of
PhotoCube you can add only 5
of your own images, because
one side has a "demo image."
With a full version, you can fill
all 6 sides of the cube with your own images.
3. After you've copied your
images and installed the
software, open it and click
FREE TRIAL. The program
will open and start loading
sample images included with
it. Click the 'BROWSE" button
and go to your "cube images"
directory. Select the five
images you want to use and
click O.K. The program will
then start loading those images so you will be able to place
them in the cube.
