There are lots of reasons why. With a choice of more than 180 distinctive ships both small and large, around 2000 ports of call around the world, there is the perfect cruise for everyone. On a cruise you can see the world, completely unwind, experience new cultures, dance the night away, feast on fabulous cuisine, learn new skills, make new friends and bond with your family. The possibilities are endless. Value for money Your cruise price includes your accommodation, dining, entertainment and more, making cruising an easy holiday to budget for. It’s hard to find a comparable land holiday to compete. Unpack only once Wake up to a different sight, and port, nearly every day. No other kind of holiday allows travellers to visit different countries with the convenience of only unpacking once. Once on board your ship, you really have arrived at your home away from home. No need to live out of a suitcase or be hopping on and off buses and planes. Culture and excursions One of the most exciting aspects of a cruising holiday is the variety of fascinating ports you can visit on any one journey. You will have the opportunity to immerse yourself for a short time in a completely different culture to your own. Get set to learn, absorb and explore the world around you. Some of the smaller port stops are relatively easy to explore independently; however, one of the greatest ways to experience the very best of your ports of call is to participate in your cruise ship’s shore excursions. Designed to cover a range of tastes, shore excursions arranged by your cruise ship can include anything from cultural walking tours, cooking schools and shopping tours to adventures, such as helicopter rides, mountain biking, canoeing, white-water rafting and wildlife treks. 2 It’s a good idea to start planning your shore excursion choices early. Some cruise lines will even allow you to book in advance of your cruise, either online or with your travel consultant. You will usually receive a program of your ship’s shore excursion options with your cruise documents once you have booked and paid for your holiday. If you do not pre-book, it is best to book your excursions as soon as you board the ship. Cuisine A holiday wouldn’t be a holiday without enjoying great food, wine and service. From five-course meals in the main dining room to poolside barbecues and pizzerias, your tastebuds are certainly in for a treat on a cruise. Try new foods with a different menu choice every night. Most ships have self-service buffets available for breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner. These are a quick, convenient and relaxed way to dine. For those who enjoy dressing up every now and then, formal nights are usually offered. Men will be required to wear a dark suit and tie, or perhaps even a dinner jacket, while ladies can dress up in a cocktail dress or evening gown. Some ships also have semi-formal nights. Alternate dining options will be available for those who would prefer a more casual dining experience. In addition to the vast array of dining options included in your cruise fare, many ships offer ‘specialty’ restaurants, where for a nominal fee, you can dine on world-class international cuisines such as Italian, Japanese, French, Mexican or Chinese. Bookings can be made once on board or pre-booked online, depending on the cruise line. A room service menu, which is more often than not accompanied by convenient 24 hour service and is often complimentary, is available on most ships. Cruising the Adriatic Sea Ship activities and facilities Relaxation Simplicity and satisfaction There is no need to have any concerns about filling your days at sea, as the options are endless. With all the options for action, fun, exercise and education available on many cruise ships, you’ll probably need to pencil in some time for rest and relaxation. Whether you are cruising for three days or 30 days, and whilst you will visit a variety of ports, you only have to check in once and you are in same cabin for your entire holiday. With meals and entertainment included in your cruise fare, other incidentals such as drinks and onboard shopping, can be charged to your personal cabin account. It allows you the convenience of not having to exchange cash or use your credit card. Unlike some travel you may undertake, you won’t come back from your holiday needing a holiday – it’s a fact that cruises have higher levels of satisfaction than any other holiday. You’ll usually find activities such as swimming, exercise classes, computer training, art auctions, photography classes, dance lessons, shuffleboard, deck quoits, basketball and tennis, to name a few. You could attend lectures on the culture, history, flora and fauna of the region you’re cruising in, or perhaps even learn some tips on cooking the regional fare. If games of bingo, trivia quizzes, crafts and board games are more your speed, you’re also catered for. For night owls, every night on a cruise ship is an entertainment spectacular. Consider your ship as a floating capital city, with nightclubs, movies, live music, themed parties, magic, comedy, cabaret, Broadway and West End-style shows and casinos to keep everyone entertained. On larger ocean-going cruises, facilities on board the ship may include anything from day spas, gyms and saunas to wave pools, cinemas, ice-skating rinks, mini-golf courses, ten-pin bowling alleys and rock-climbing walls. Many cruise ships now feature worldclass day spas, and a visit to the day spa can be a wonderfully rejuvenating part of your cruise holiday. Most onboard spas offer a tour where they showcase their facilities and explain the variety of treatments available. This is a great way to assist you in deciding what you would like to try. We all love to be pampered, and there is a spa treatment or therapy to suit everyone. Family time Cruising is an ideal holiday choice for both children and parents, and most cruise lines offer a vast range of supervised children’s activities. The children are well looked after with dedicated, age appropriate child and teen facilities offering hangouts and activities geared to the younger set, allowing adults time to relax and enjoy a real holiday. ‘Wake up to a different sight, and port, nearly every day’. Romance Cruise ships provide the perfect setting for midnight walks under the stars, exotic ports, spa services and intimate dinner arrangements. 3 C H O O S E YO U R S H I P With the outstanding choice of cruises, ships and itineraries available for every budget, a cruise represents almost unlimited travel experiences. With choices ranging from intimate yacht-like vessels with as few as 50 passengers, to massive mega ships stretching longer than three football fields and carrying up to 5400 people, choosing the right cruise could be seen as slightly overwhelming. Selecting the cruise line that best matches your personality is crucial, as it may vary your experience. Regardless of physical dimensions, all cruise ships offer the same ingredients: accommodation, entertainment, activities, an abundance of food, good service and exciting ports of call. Do you want an adventure across the oceans or a meander along a river? It’s just that some may offer that special ‘something’ that will suit you better than some other options. The number of passengers on board your ship is an important consideration; do you want to meet and socialise with lots of people or do you want to enjoy quiet time with your partner? 4 Are you seeking personalised service and an intimate ambience or an exciting resort out at sea? These are just a sample of the many questions you will need to ask yourself when deciding which cruise ship is right for you. Ships come in three principal categories and are measured in Gross Registered Tonnes (GRT) and by the number of passengers that they carry. Let us take you through some of the discerning attributes of each, to help you have the cruise holiday you have always dreamed about. Large Resort Ships Mid-size Ships Boutique & Small Ships 1200 – 5400 passengers 90,000 – 220,000 GRT 500 – 1200 passengers 30,000 – 90,000 GRT 50 – 500 passengers 5,000 – 30,000 GRT Creating a resort environment, these are the ships to choose if you enjoy a very social atmosphere with loads of entertainment and an endless supply of food. They provide a well-packaged cruise holiday experience that can range from standard to luxury. Somewhere in between larger resort ships and small ships, mid-size ships tend to offer a premium cruise experience. Mid-size ships are very well suited to smaller ports, due to their ease of manoeuvrability. If you’re seeking an intimate cruise experience with personalised service, then a small ship cruise holiday will probably suit you best. One of the best things about large ship cruising is the extensive range of entertainment facilities and programs available for people of all ages and interests. During the day, busy yourself with a workout at the gym, indulge in a pampering spa treatment, take a cooking class, play a round of mini-golf … or enjoy an extensive choice of other options. At night, be entertained in grand venues such as casinos and nightclubs. If you are travelling with children, large ships are well suited due to the extent of children’s programs on board. On the list of advantages is the amazing selection of restaurants and dining, from 24 hour room service menus to smorgasbord buffets and gala five-course formal dinners. Large ships are perfect for those who like their days to be busy, as there are always activities happening across the ship. Many offer adult-only areas should you want a bit of peace and quiet. This allows many cruise lines to operate itineraries not possible for large resort ships or small and boutique ships such as some round-the-world cruises and longer journeys that take in many exotic locales. Neither too big, nor too small, these ships’ size and facilities generally strike a happy balance. You can easily find your way around and there is still a range of activities and excursions to participate in. With regards to entertainment, there is ample. While mid-size ships don’t offer as wide a range of facilities or productions as those on large ships, they do offer a greater range of facilities than small ships and more than enough to keep everyone entertained, particularly when considering the ratio of passenger numbers to facilities. So if you are wanting the best of both worlds, a mid-size ship is the perfect choice. With small ship cruising, you could find yourself on the deck of some of the world’s most exclusive cruise ships. This can be on coastal vessels, river cruise ships, sailing ships and expedition ships that take you on nature-based cruises to frontiers such as Antarctica and along the Amazon. This is the kind of cruise you should choose if you enjoy a quiet and relaxed cruising experience, with fewer passengers, facilities, entertainment and dining options than large ships. This is the right choice if you would like a more unique adventure or an educational journey that provides a rather intimate ambience. Furthermore, if you would like to access some off-the-beaten-track ports that large ships aren’t generally able to access, this is the definitely the cruise for you. Small ship cruising allows you to experience culturally rich and unique port destinations, in a more intimate environment and more exclusivity in your shore experiences. 5 CABIN SELECTION One of the most important decisions you’ll need to make when booking a cruise is your cabin type and location. © Oceania Cruises, Monte Carlo Sometimes there can be up to 20 different cabin categories, so how do you go about choosing the perfect cabin? Inside Cabins Outside Cabins Balcony Cabins Suites, Penthouses & Villas These are the lowest category of cabin and the least expensive, and are located in the internal section of the ship. Some of the newer ships may have windows into the atrium of the ship, but Inside Cabins tend to be best suited to passengers who intend on being out and about a lot and don’t mind not having a view. Generally, Outside Cabins are almost identical in size and amenities to the Inside Cabins, with the only difference being the sealed window or porthole to the ocean offering natural light into the cabin. The Balcony (Verandah) Cabin is the next step up from Outside Cabins, generally offering the same amenities, but with the added advantage of sliding glass doors that give you access to the outside and ocean views from your cabin. Above the Balcony Cabin category, there’s a range of luxury cabins that offer more space and facilities than other cabin categories. Suites come in all shapes, sizes and locations. Some have private balconies, others come without; others may offer interconnecting cabins for families and may accommodate groups of up to 14 passengers. They are a wonderful treat, especially if you have a lot of days at sea. A new trend is the Spa Cabin, offering direct access to the ship’s spa facilities. Talk with your travel consultant about the price difference between an Inside and Outside Cabin, as the difference may be quite small. 6 The Porthole Cabins are on the lower decks and are generally the least expensive in this category. Most modern ships have large picture windows rather than portholes, but these windows may not be opened, so if you want a sea breeze in your room, you’ll need a Balcony Cabin. They are a place for you to sit, dine, enjoy the view or even have a massage. Enquire about the price of a Balcony Cabin, as it sometimes won’t cost you much more than an Outside Cabin. C RU I S E Q& A Below are some of the more commonly asked questions and answers travellers have when choosing to cruise. How do I get to the port to join my ship? What are the dress codes on board? In most instances the cruise line will offer seat-in-vehicle transfers to join your ship from the airport and return if your flights arrive and depart on the same day as the cruise. These services should be pre-booked and paid for with your travel consultant. Some ports have traffic restrictions and taxis may not have access to the shipside. There are three distinct types of evenings on board: casual, smart casual and formal. Should I book a night’s accommodation before or after my cruise? If you are flying in or out to join your cruise, it is recommended to book a night prior and possibly a night after your cruise in the event of any unexpected delays with your flights or cruise. Trying to catch up to your cruise ship can be expensive and very stressful. Are there medical facilities aboard the ship? Most ships travel with a doctor and registered nurse on board. They will also have reasonable medical facilities to handle emergency situations. Smaller ships may have more limited facilities. Can I get my laundry done? Most ships offer full laundry and dry-cleaning services and this can be billed to your onboard account. Some ships provide self-service washers, dryers and irons, either complimentary or for a nominal fee. Checklist Suggested guidelines are as follows: Some of the most important questions you need to ask your travel consultant when booking your cruise are: Casual means sport shirts and slacks for men, sundresses or pants for women. Which cruise ship will suit me the best? Smart casual means jackets for men and dresses and/or dress pants for women. What destinations are available? Formal means suits and ties or tuxedos for men and cocktail dresses or evening gowns for women. Do I need to tip on my cruise? It is customary to tip staff members on the majority of ships. If tips are not included in your cruise price, you will receive an envelope in your cabin on the last day of the cruise, or as a convenience, some cruise lines will automatically charge to your cabin. Some cruise lines have a no tipping policy. Ask your travel consultant for guidance. How do I get ashore? Usually the ship will dock in the port and you will leave by the gangway (as you do when you embark). What should I budget? What is included in the price? What is the cancellation policy? Can I make any changes to my holiday? What facilities and activities does the ship have? What type of cabin do you recommend for my tastes and my budget? What season is it best to travel to my destination? Will I need a passport or visas for my cruise? Do I need any vaccinations? What can I do in port? What kind of food, service and entertainment can I expect? In some ports, however, you will anchor a little way out from the shore and be taken to shore by tender. 7 TO P 5 C R U I S E D E S T I N AT I O N S When you book a cruise holiday, the first step is to select a destination. Quite a task when you consider the amazing options on offer! A myriad of cultures, history and incredible landmarks await. Take a closer look at each of the Top Five. 1. This is your chance to slow down and experience ‘island time’. 2. Australia Sometimes the best adventures are right in your own backyard. Cruise our spectacular coastline and experience the rugged isle of Tasmania, the world renowned wines of the Barossa and the beauty of The Kimberley. Here you can witness all the landscapes of the world together in once place – rivers and rainforests, mountains and lakes, coasts and spectacular fjords. 3. The Middle East A cruise to the Middle East promises a voyage rich in history and adventure. The Middle East is the birthplace of ancient civilisation and many of the world’s major religions. On optional shore excursions you may have the opportunity to see Mount Carmel, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and the Virgin Mary’s church in Ephesus. Egypt is a land of ancient splendour enriched by centuries of culture. Along the narrow ribbon of the 960-mile River Nile, dynasties of kings and queens created monumental legacies that are sure to fascinate. 4. The Caribbean Over the years the Caribbean has been populated by people of every background and description – explorers, pirates, shipwrecked sailors, Africans, Chinese, East Indians, French, Spanish, British, Dutch and Danish. All have splashed their colourful personalities across the canvas of the Caribbean. As a result, the Caribbean countries are incredibly diverse in their sights, people, culture, history and mood. On an ocean cruise you can see the world, completely unwind, experience new cultures, dance the night away, feast on fabulous cuisine, learn new skills, make new friends and bond with your family. The possibilities are endless. Traditionally, ocean cruises have been considered a part of the lifestyle of the rich and famous. These days, however, highly competitive prices mean that the market has opened up for more of us to experience the pleasures of ocean cruising. In fact, cruising is now the fastest growing holiday segment in the world, with new ships entering the market regularly. Ocean cruising attracts an extremely far-reaching clientele, from young families wanting a fun-filled family experience to people who wish to circumnavigate the globe in high style. Ocean cruises offer it all and then some. Benefits of Ocean Cruising Diversity and choice is the predominant benefit of ocean cruising. Options are endless and there is something to cater to every taste and every budget. Onboard facilities include anything from casinos, pools and saunas, rock-climbing walls, ice-skating rinks, kids’ clubs and high-tech entertainment centres. Activities range from 4D movies, destinational lectures, fitness classes, cooking classes, dining with the captain, to being pampered in a well-appointed day spa. Wake up to a different sight and port nearly every day. Ocean cruises can touch every continent in the world, and on-shore excursions and visits are extensive, educational or just plain fun. Shop for a bargain in Singapore, listen to the steel drums of the Caribbean, marvel at centuries-old architecture of Europe or laze on a white-sand beach on an Asian island. The most difficult part of ocean cruising is choosing which one to take. Take some time to read through the following pages, sit with one of our experienced travel consultants and if worse comes to worse – toss a coin. Why Choose an Ocean Cruise? With all the options for action, fun, exercise and education available on many ocean cruise ships, you may need to pencil in some time for rest and relaxation. Evening Entertainment For night owls, every night on an ocean cruise is an entertainment spectacular. Consider your ship a floating capital city, with nightclubs, movies, live music, themed parties, magic, comedy, cabaret, Broadway and West End-style shows and casinos to keep everyone happy. Cruising for Cuisine Enjoy the taste sensations offered on your ship that range from gourmet fine fare to the dependable pizza. Let your mood take your taste buds on their own journey. Dine in a traditional dining room setting, small bistro or casual eatery. Family Time Ocean cruising is an ideal holiday choice for both children and parents, as most ships offer a vast range of supervised children’s activities and facilities. This gives the whole family the opportunity to spend some quality time together and then some time for individual exploration and play. Unpack Just Once No other kind of holiday allows you to visit different countries with the convenience of only unpacking once. Enjoy the experience of small group excursions and leave the crowds behind. Antarctica Kicker Rock, Galapagos Islands What is Adventure & Small Ship Cruising? Adventure and small ship cruise lines allow you to experience life under billowing sail, take part in scientific expeditions, meander through some of the top rivers of the world or participate in unique seminars or experiences. More often than not, passengers who choose adventure or small ship cruising are driven by the destination and experience rather than the actual cruising craft. There is generally fewer passengers than on the larger ocean cruising lines, with numbers starting as low as 20 and climbing to only around 500. It is important for those choosing adventure and small ship cruising to be flexible and adaptable. Often the terrain into which you will venture, experiences the extremes of weather conditions. This may interrupt or change your shore excursion options. Most companies will, however, have a back-up option should your preference not be available on any given day. Benefits of Adventure & Small Ship Cruising The smaller size of the ships is also an advantage, enabling them to cruise to more shallow or narrow waterways that larger vessels cannot access. This opens up exciting destinations whilst still focusing on a comfortable onboard lifestyle. Adventure and small ship cruising experiences tend to offer many shore excursion options, travelling to destinations that are off the beaten track whilst allowing exploration of amazing ecological and cultural wonders. Amenities on board adventure cruise ships often include state-ofthe-art equipment, including satellite navigation, first-rate medical facilities, gourmet cuisine and comfortable cabins. Facilities are designed with an adventurous clientele in mind and, depending on the size of the ship, can include fitness centres, spas and fine dining. Many adventure and small ships have their own inflatable Zodiacs which transport passengers into the depths of the environment that is being explored. Traverse amongst spectacular icebergs and watch out for the diverse wildlife of the Antarctic. Camp out on an ice-shelf or snorkel with sea lions in the Galapagos Islands – the options with adventure and small ship cruising are limitless. Why Choose Adventure & Small Ship Cruising? Want something off the beaten path? An adventure or small ship cruise is a wondrous experience offering a relaxing environment as well as the opportunity to explore fascinating places. A world of adventure awaits as you begin your cruise and venture to locations of beauty and mystique. Onshore excitement From the freezing environs of Antarctica to the magical islands of Greece, adventure and small ship cruising allows you to discover and learn more about your destination. Passionate and expert guides assist in making your onshore experience as exciting and wondrous as possible. Responsible Travel Adventure and small ship cruising often appeal to those looking to experience other cultures and environments. This type of travel lends itself well to those who believe in the statement ‘take nothing but photographs; leave nothing but footprints’. Responsible travel is manifested by hiring local guides, working with local businesses, and by leaving each area in a better state than how it was found, along with many other measures. Onboard Education Learn about your destination in detail before you arrive with informative lectures, interactive classes and in-depth briefings. Luxury cruise lines feature similar shipboard amenities to contemporary lines (spas, health clubs, pools, multiple dining options and restaurants, intimate lounges, incredible entertainment, casinos and more), but they feature a more luxurious experience with sophisticated dining experiences, amenities and service. Shore Excursions in Style Whether you are exploring the Chilkoot Trail in Alaska or sipping on a fine chianti in Florence, your shore excursions on a luxury cruise will not disappoint. Just as your onboard experience is one of exceptional comfort and service, so too will be your on-land encounter. Spacious Elegance More often than not, your accommodation on a luxury cruise will offer more space and more features than on other cruise lines. Some feature in-room spas, private verandahs, butler service, flat screen TVs, cosy bath robes and much more. Fine Dining at its Best Dining on a luxury cruise is understood to be an integral part of your cruising holiday. Celebrated chefs design innovative menus, which are sure to please, while the attentive service of the staff will cater to your every whim.
