So let’s go and get some!” “Well, okay.” And so they went until they came under a coconut tree. Thin Waist said: “Hey buddy, will you climb up or should I climb up to get the coconuts?” It would be better if Thin Waist climbed the coconut tree, but he didn’t. Instead, Sharp Head climbed up. Wow, he climbed but he didn’t see any coconut hanging above him and as he climbed, he stabbed his sharp head in a coconut and he got stuck there. As he was hanging there, his friend Thin Waist under the tree burst out laughing and, ooh, as he was shaking from laughter, he broke his waist and died. Usually, they hanged out either on the shore or at the sea. Once they were sitting on a stone, a large flat stone, and they made a deal with each other: “Hey buddy, you can go up on the shore, so you go look for cassavas and get some sweet potatoes, and bring them down here. As for me, I will go catch some fish.” “All right!” In this way, Crab fooled Monkey. Monkey went up to dig cassavas, sweet potatoes, as well as some bananas and things like that. After that, he put them in the basket, and then brought them down. He brought them down onto the stone. As he got to the stone, he took everything out and put them on the top of the stone. After he put them down he said: “Buddy!” And then a voice answered from under his butt, saying: “Hey, come up!” The voice came from under the stone, so he thought: “Ah, who is this that is answering me?” “Buddy!” and again a voice answered from under the stone. He thought that it was his penis that just answered him, so he said: “Don’t do that!” 7 Hen dikang di: “Feela!” Henil ti, o hamoi: “Wah!” Di wi nuku mi ya, hen dowile do: “Wah, a namoi ko yal a mon te!” Henil do, di wi do baai ba ming haliel ba nala do: “Feela!” henil ti: “hm?” henil. “Wah, ko yal a mong bai, ko yal a mong bai!” Henir ba nala yo hen: “Feela!” henil ti ya: “hm?” henil. “Wah!” Di e wi bang haliel do, di mi ba dato do la baabi la tapei yo, hen moni. Again he called: “Buddy!” And it again answered: “Hey!” He took a stone and said to his penis: “Hey, if you answer me again, I will kill you!” And he raised the stone and said: “Buddy!” and then it answered “hmm!” just like that. “Hey, I will kill you, I will really kill you!” and he called one more time: “Buddy!” and it answered again “hmm!” just like that. Wow, he smashed the stone down on his penis, ooh, and he was dead indeed. He was lying there dead when Crab came up and started laughing. He took all that stuff and went back down into the sea. That’s the end. Monkey and Turtle were talking to each other when Monkey said: “Buddy, I saw a banana tree up there, so let’s go get some!” And then Turtle said: “Well, okay!” Afterward, they started walking. They walked towards the place, and then Turtle said: “Buddy, where is it?” “Oh, it is nearby, up there!” Begitu na, dorang dua naik habis, naik sampai di bawa itu pisang, Monyet ni panjat itu pisang. When he climbed up, he plucked bananas and ate them. After he ate them, he threw the skin down on his friend. And so Turtle said: “Buddy, pluck one for me too!” And then Monkey answered: “Oh, I just dropped one!” “No, this is just a banana skin!” Then Monkey said: “Well, then you will have to eat it, no?” He continued plucking and eating the bananas and dropping the skin. “Buddy, what you just dropped down is again just a piece of banana skin!” “Oh, just calm down, I will drop you some in a minute!” Begitu lagi dia petik ko makan, makan habis, dia pung kulit dia kasi jatu lagi. “Sobat, ini dia pung kulit ni yang lu kasi jatu di saya ni!” “Ai, lu tenang la, sebentar dulu la, nanti saya kasi jatu, o!” begitu. 11 Henil ba dining ayoku di ming tei sasang palepal do, lunga naha halo, hel baleei headuo hen uwo sei. Penyu ni dia masi bolak-balik tu, dia pung tuan dorang suda turun: After that Monkey jumped down from the banana tree and ran off. While Turtle was still running around, the owners were already getting there: “Hey guys, our dinner came here!” “Oo, sobat, kita pung daging ada turun, oo!” Begitu ni, dorang turun habis, dorang semua kerumun habis, dorang balik Penyu habis ko potong cincang ko dorang baku bagi. Another one, now again about Monkey and Turtle. The two of them made a deal again because Monkey said he saw some bananas. And so Turtle told him: “Buddy, you have already seen the bananas, so let me get you a bag. You can climb up and put the bananas in there and when you bring them down again we will eat them!” “Well, okay!” And so he made a hole in the bottom of that bag. After Turtle made a hole in the bottom of that bag, he gave it to Monkey. Monkey climbed up to pluck bananas but they fell straight onto the ground. After that Turtle ate them and put the skin under his belly. Monkey kept plucking the bananas but they fell straight next to Turtle, who peeled and ate them and put the skin under his belly. In this way, it went on and on, wow, the banana tree was all plucked so Monkey climbed down again, oh, he saw banana skins were lying everywhere, so he said: “You left and let me eat all the bananas on my own?” Then he looked in the bag and saw that it was empty. Turtle was gone too. Turtle ran back to the sea. That’s the end. "Yoo, baik!" Begitu dia kasi lubang karong pung pantat. And so he said: “Buddy, I myself keep coming up to you all the time and that’s not good, you have to come too. Let’s go to my village!” And so Monkey said: “Yes, okay!” just like that. “Well, but how can I go?” “Oh, don’t worry, you will sit on my back!” said Turtle. So Monkey said: “Well, let’s go then!” And he seated himself on Turtle’s back and Turtle swam and swam until he was in the middle of the sea just above his house. Then he dived down and landed on the bench. The village and Turtle’s house were all really pretty and colourful. Turtle’s children pounded rice and cooked it on fire. They also caught a rooster and roasted it. Everyone was served food and drinks. After they have been served the food, they ate till they were really full. Then Turtle said: “Friend, my wife is sick. She said if she could eat your heart she would get better.” 17 Henilo, hen hel luka-luka do hefangi ya: "Ai, edo baai beeka, henil mi te wir te, a e wó do mia hefanga naha. Why didn’t you say so when we were above on the shore? If you did, I would have brought my heart, but you didn’t say a word so I didn’t bring it, so now we have to go back and get it!” So he said: “Well, okay then!” Then Monkey climbed and sat on his back again and they went up to the surface of the sea. Once they were on the surface of the sea, Turtle swam and swam to the shore. When he got close to the shore, Monkey leaped on the land and said: “Hey, I have just fooled you! You think that one can leave one’s heart behind and walk around without it? You are really stupid! People say that you don’t know anything and indeed, you have no idea what so ever!” His friend just said: “Ay!” and grumpily went back to his village in the sea. That’s the end. Begitu: "Ai, baik oo!" begitu. One man, called Blind Eyes, with his friend, called Deaf Ears, went one day to steal coconuts. As they went, Deaf Ears said: “Hey buddy, I saw a coconut tree with a lot of fruits. Let’s go and get some. What do you say?” his friend answered: “ Well, okay then!” After that, they really went. Deaf Ears was holding the hand of Blind Eyes and they went. When they came under the coconut tree, Blind Eyes said: “Hey buddy, will you climb or shall I climb?” Deaf Ears answered: “You are blind, so let me climb!” Deaf Ears started climbing the coconut tree. When he climbed up, he plucked one coconut and threw it down. When the coconut fell down, Blind Eyes said: “Buddy, the owner is coming back, so climb down quickly!” Deaf Ears answered: “Another one?” “No, climb down, the owner is coming back!” Deaf Ears answered: “Should I drop them all?” “Hey, whatever I say, you won’t hear me, I am just gonna run!” After that, Blind Eyes ran off. He was running on and on, then, he went to hide. He put his head under dry leaves but his butt remained visible on the path. “Nefeela nufal yo!” “Te mia?” “Wata hong mia yo.” “A sei re naha ba a mon te!” Henil di saai kaanri ya, nala hedo baai di bol balasa. "Saya dengan saya pung teman oo!" "Ada di mana?" "Ada di atas pohon kelapa oo!" "Lu turun ko lu mati dulu!" The owner was coming along the same path. He then beated up Blind Eyes and he asked him: “Who did you come here with?” “I came with a friend!” “Where is he?” “He is on the coconut tree!” “Now you come down, or I shall kill you!” So Deaf Ears climbed down, and he got beaten up too. So the owner beated up both Blind Eyes and Deaf Ears badly. That’s the end. 23 Ruwol bira Martinus Maufani Nuku yo hel baai dara Pada-Alwo mia. Piaremang ba iti Aila seerang do. Dia pung nama tu, Lutangfur. Suda tu. There is another story, also about Pada-Alwo. It’s about our clan, the Alila tribe. In that place our ancestors kept chicken and then got into a fight about the eggs. For that fight, one of our ancestors came to Kamana village, from where all of us came. That ancestor who left after the fight was not a woman, it was a man. His name is Lutangfur. Lutangfur had two sons, Takalutang and Mabilutang. So for those who say the same but with a female ancestor, we have the same origin. But there are only a few of those left. Our clan, the Alila clan originates from Kamana, that’s what I just said. There is another ancestor, I can’t remember the name, but that one went to Mali. That one is also a man, not a woman. The one that went over the top of the house is called Melangfur. His descendants are those who came to Alila and became Muslim. Those from Kamana that I was talking about earlier have some descendants went up to Apui. Those in Lamang-Taha, those also originated from Pada-Alwo. Because they went up, they call themselves Lamang-Taha, and they call us Lamang-Wo. That’s how they got their names from. That’s all. 25 Tafaa hebel Martinus Maufani Tafaa nala heteitu yo fat-tafaa, heayoku maiye, lasing-tafaa. Hare fat-tafaa, lasing-tafaa. Kol-malei tang maiye, hawa-taka. 26 Moko pung Nilai Prices of Moko Drums Oleh Martinus Maufani By Martinus Maufani Moko yang pertama tu, moko jagung (fat tafaa), kedua moko gelang (lasing tafaa). Jadi moko jagung, baru moko gelang. Begitu dulu, baru di moko tengsama, moko-tenga (tama mia), maneng-mak, kolmalei, mulut kosong (hawa taka), bulan sabit (ía kasing), mulut babi (fe hawa), ai-mala, makasar (makaisara-e-hei). The first moko drum is the corn drum (fat tafaa), the second the bracelet drum (lasing tafaa). So corn drum, then bracelet drum. Then you get the tengsama drum, the middle drum (tama mia), the maneng mak, the kolmalei, the empty mouth (hawa taka), the moon crescent (ía kasing), the pig mouth (fe hawa), and Macassarese ai-mala (makasara-e-hei). Fiyai futal is also a Macassarese drum. The other two from Macassar are: manei-taka and bloody clothes (namang wea), then the jawanese drums: with ears (yawa hawei), with full ears (yawa hawei upi) and with pierced ears (yawa hawei bokung). Then the soil kolmalei, the bileakwea, the kolmalei kot kale, the kolmalei kot towa, the male itkira (this one is worth three Javanese drums). Then the itkira with short arms (hatáng bui) and with long arms (hatáng lohu). So if you lend someone a corn drum, they must return you a bracelet drum (lasing tafaa). When you lend a bracelet drum, they return a tengsama drum. For a tengsama, they return a middle drum (tama mia). You lend out a tengsama, they return a manekmaek. When you lend a manekmaek, they return a kolmalei. For a kolmalei, they must return an empty mouth (hawa taka). Fiyai futal itu juga moko makasar. Lagi moko makasar manei-taka, lagi makasar pakaian-berdara (namangwea), lagi jawa (yawa), jawa telinga (yawa hawei), lagi jawa telinga utu (yawa hawei upi), lagi jawa telinga lobang (yawa hawei bokung). Lagi kolmalei tana, bileak-wea, kolmalei kot-kale, kolmalei kot towa, lagi itkira laki-laki (itkira neng, di dalamnya ada tiga jawa). Lagi itkira tangan pendek (hatáng bui), itkira tangan panjang (hatáng lohu). Jadi, kita pinjam moko jagung na, kita kasi kembali moko gelang (lasing tafaa). Kita pinjam moko gelang na, kita kasi kembali moko tengsama. Kita pinjam tengsama na, kasi kembali moko tenga (tama-mia). Kita pinjam moko tenga, kembali manekmaek. Pinjam manek-maek, kembali kolmalei. Pinjam kolmalei na, kasi kembali mulut kosong (hawa taka). 27 Hawa-taka tang maiye, ía-kasing; ía-kasing tang maiye ai-mala. Hawei-nuku tan te hu hawei-upi mi hetang, hawei-upi tang hawei-bokung mi hetang. Hawei-bokung tang maiye kol-malei mi hetang, kol-malei tango maiye it-kira yawa sua yo mi hetang. E hatáng-bui, yawa sua tang nu hatáng-bui mi hetang. Hatáng-bui tang te hu oro it-kira-hatánglohu mi tang. E tel hetan mara ha nu. 28 Pinjam mulut kosong na, kasi kembali bulan sabis (ía kasing). Pinjam bulan sabit, kembali aimala. Pinjam aimala, kembali makasar (makaisara-e-hei). If they borrow an empty mouth, they must give back a crescent moon (ía kasing). If they borrow that one, they return an aimala. If they borrow an aimala, they give back a Macassarese drum (makaisara-e-hei). If you lend someone a Macassarese drum, they give back a fiyai futal. For a fiyai futal, they return a manei taka. For a maneitaka, they return a Macassarese drum with short arms, for that one, they return one with long arms. For one with long arms, they return a Javanese drum with ears (hawei nuku). For a Javanese with ears, they give you back one with full ears. If you lend that one, they give back the one with pierced ears. For one with pierced ears, you return a kolmalei. For a kolmalei, you return an itkira (or with three Javanese drums). For that one you get back the one with short arms (hatáng bui). For the one with short arms you get one with long arms (hatáng lohu). This is how we count the price of drums and the interest. Pinjam makasar itu na, kembali moko fiyai-futal. Pinjam fiyai-futal, kasi manei-taka.Pinjam manei-taka na, kembali makasar tangan pendek (hatáng bui). Pinjam tangan pendek, kembali tangan panjang (hatáng lohu).Pinjam tangan panjang, kasi kembali, jawa satu telinga (hawei nuku). Pinjam jawa satu telinga, kembali telinga utu (hawei upi). Pinjam telinga utu, kasi dia telinga lubang (hawei bokung). Pinjam telinga lubang, kasi kembali kolmalei. Pinjam tangan pendek dan tiga jawa tu, kembali tangan pendek (hatáng bui). Pinjam tangan pendek dulu, baru kasi kembali itkira tangan panjang (hatáng lohu). Ini tadi hitung berturut-turut tu. 29 La teitu nikalieta… Alfred Maufani La teitu nikalieta pa Muna buku naha te Pantar buku mia ba tat tawali. The king of Munaseli and the king of Pandai were in conflict and started a war. From that the people in Muna had to split and our ancestors left and arrived in the village Likwatang. After they arrived in Likwatang, they went to a village called Tipai-Baabi, and cleared it. They cleared that place and made fields all around there. From there they kept clearing the forest upwards. They cleared so much land that they got a whole granary of rice and they went to Muna and built a sanctuary there. Then, from there they returned to here (to Likwatang) and cleared the fields. Then some of them turned to the west. They cleared the fields on the mountains to the villages Loma-Lohu and KalangMasang. From there they went up again and cleared the village Leumang. After they cleared Leumang, they went to Abui-Kewai and there they met some of their relatives. The people there saw their bows, arrows and their swords and bush knives. “Your bush knives look really good, how did you make them like this?” "Lu punya parang terlalu bagus, kenapa baru begini lu bawa?" 31 Kalieta Pelangmai Baruen di hefangi: “Hedo wida ba hedo nidu hu ni kariang, nide heong, nide hepaneng ma haba, nala ba mi hedo hekariang hei pa melang iti. The ancestor Pelang-Mai Baruen said: “We know how to make them like this, we make them ourselves. But the tools to make them are in the village on the coast.” Then they brought their hammers and anvils from the coast to the village Yoimang and up to KafakBeeka and they smithed the iron that the people had there into arrows, knives and swords. After that, some girl from Laking-Tei came to look after their children. She was carrying the children around the fire all the time. Then one time she stumbled over the burning wood, which fell on the back of the old Pelang-Mai. Because his back got burned he was enraged. He lifted up the hammer to scare the girl. She was so frightened that she fainted and fell on the ground. The villagers got very angry and wanted to murder the old PelangMai Baruen, but they couldn’t figure out how. After they made peace they went to a small village called Fe-Fui to consult a fortuneteller how to murder the old man. They would put up sharp and slippery bamboo pieces on the path to murder the old man. If they would use the iron weapons he made them, they wouldn’t succeed. Some of them went to the hill Pelang-Mai, put up the bamboo traps there and waited in ambush for the old man. The rest pursued him to Pelang-Mai. All the other paths were blocked, people put spells on them. Just this one path was left. So the old man had to pass along there. He stepped on the bamboo, slipped and the sharp bamboo wounded him in between his toes. He had to sit down. This was how they killed the old Pelang-Mai. So only the old Luruen remained, he escaped to the village Yoimang. Although he moved to Yoimang, those villagers kept following him there. Around midnight they surrounded the place, ready to attack. So the old Luruen gave them a drum called kolmaleikukalei saying: “You cannot keep following me all the time, so take this drum and go back!” They took the drum but after they brought it back to their village, they came back again. So the old man prepared all his stuff and said: “Kamu turun-turun ni tidak bisa jadi, kamu pikul kamu pung moko ko bawa jalan.” Moko tu dorang suda pikul sampai di dorang pung kampung habis, dorang kembali turun lagi. Dari situ yang nene dorang siap dia pung barangbarang dorang bilang: “We cannot stay here, let’s flee again!” Then those people attacked Yoimang and killed all men and women there. They followed our ancestors, husband and wife, who came down there and forced them to escape down to Likwatang. The wife was pregnant and about to give birth when they had to flee, so her husband took her down to the coast and there they rested a bit. While they were resting there, she had to stay there and give birth there. After that he went up to the village and told their relatives. They came down and brought her up to stay with them in the villages Lu-Melang and in Kafiyel-Melang. We originate from there. Now because of the decision of the government and the church, we moved down to the coast again, to this village Kameng-Taha. So my story about our ancestors is not very long, but the time that my ancestors came from Muna and came here is a long time ago in the past. In those days, people were clearing the fields with stone tools and worshipped other gods. They didn’t know what are knives or swords. Because of the goodwill of the government and the church, all of us who are of different origins now live in the same village, in the same place as siblings, fathers and sons, brothers and sisters within one tribe. That’s all I have to tell. Saya pung omong habis di sini. 37 Biel tuku Lambertus Maufani Afe tada yo, buku taha do ara takun ba. Dia mati bilang, ni yang lu pung nene-moyang cari api tida bisa, na panjat tali naik bilang. Panjat tali bilang habis, sekarang kita bilang "tali puntung". In the old days, in the time of our ancestors, one day the fire went out. After the fire went out, our ancestors were looking for the fire everywhere, but all in vain until one of them climbed the liana. What we call Liana Stump now is named after his climbing. So they climbed up, all the way up to sky to get the fire. When they reached the sky, it was already evening. While the sun was going down, the sky dwellers said: “Hey buddy, if you climb down, the liana is slippery, so you better don’t!” “I don’t want to climb down, but what about the demons?” They said: “Oh, don’t worry, you will stay in the house and we will gather and sleep in the lianas that are hanging down!” He would also go to the hanging lianas but they were slippery so he would fall down from the sky. It is said that he stayed in the house, he closed the door and climbed in the granary and closed the other door too. The sky dwellers who were waiting for the sun were chanting: “ying-yung, ying-yung”. The demons were calling: “darkness, darkness!” So the sky dwellers kept chanting: “dawn quickly, dawn quickly!” After the sky dwellers climbed in their hanging lianas, there was a lot of blood. " begitu bilang. Dia juga jalan begitu na, tali licin, jadi jangan sampe dia jatu na dia tinggal bilang. Tinggal ni, pintu ni suda tutup, ruma pung pintu, loteng pung pintu tutup bilang. Dia pung kawan dorang ni tunggu matahari tenggelam bilang ni, ah!, "ying-yung, ying-yung!" begitu jiwa ini terus: "gelap-gelap!". Begitu tu, manusia dorang bilang: "cepat siang, cepat siang!" begitu. 39 Sei si, wea do sila naha ba, piama kaang do wea do beekadi, di yaa ama mi do mai, di akui tiki mara ti, akui kiding o la ming ahanri ba: “Feela!” hen ti ya: “Hm.” “Ai, feela yo do nil baai tadei naha ya, a me sei yo!” Mai holung halieli saai ba ara yo mi heri ya: “Ai, a sei ye, yal do heng aridi hare a sei ye!” Hen mia do kaang to. 40 Turun habis baru dara terlalu banyak sekali bilang, kita pung orang ni, dara terlalu banyak. Dorang pigi ambel orang, na buka tali loteng, naik habis ko buka loteng kecil. "Sobat!" itu yang dia bilang: "Hm!" So they all gathered, there was so much blood, they say it was blood of our ancestor. They went up in the house and opened the door of the granary. They said: “Hey, buddy!” he just answered: “Hmm!” “We cannot sleep either, so just come down with us!” They opened the door and he came down. They gave him a burning wood and said: “You better climbed down now, it is already morning!” He climbed down on the earth, if he wouldn’t tell other people the liana might still be there. But he did tell the other men: “When I climbed up, I almost lost my life!” So it is said that after that the men cut the liana, and there is only that stump left. This is the end. "Ai, sobat o, ini kami juga tida tidur jadi datang ko turun, oo!" Begitu na buka dia pung pintu turun bilang. Kayu api tu ambel kasi dia habis, omong bilang: "Ai, lu turun, sekarang suda siang jadi, lu turun, oo!" Begitu na dia turun di atas bumi, coba dia tida cerita, mungkin tali tetap berdiri. Tapi dia cerita di laki-laki dorang bilang: "Saya naik tu, hampir sedikit saya mati, oo!" Habis di situ tu. 41 Poying Padalehi Amalia Lanma Kulwalakul to, heya hemaama do tafuda demok ba. Demok do, heya do sieng tapei. Dorang mau sembayang ni, dia pung mama tumbuk padi. Tumbuk padi begitu na, ini Kulwalakul ni dia pigi omong bilang: "Mama, saya juga tumbuk padi, oo!" Begitu dia pegang lesung pung mulut ni, itu yang dia pung mama tumbuk dia pung tangan terus. "Aaa, pigi di lu pung bapak, potong daging, oo!" Lagi dia pigi di dia pung bapa: "Bapa, saya pegang daging, oo!" begitu. Dia pegang na, dia pung bapa dia potong dia pung tangan terus: "Aaa, pigi di lu pung mama, pigi tumbuk padi suda!" This Kulwalakul, his father and the whole family decided to make a feast in their house, people say. They were preparing for the feast and the mother was pounding rice. While she was pounding rice, Kulwalakul came to her and said: “Mum, I want to pound rice too!” He was holding the edge of the mortar but his mum kept hitting him on his hands. “Why don’t you go to your dad, he is cutting meat!” So he went to his father and said: “Daddy, I wil hold the meat too!” He was holding the meat and as his father was cutting it, he cut Kulwalakul’s hands too: “Hey, go to your mum and pound the rice now!” said his father. So he went back to his mother. She was pounding the rice and when he wanted to help, again, she hit his hands all the time: “Now you better go back to your dad, quickly, go cut some meat over there!” So he went again and said to his father: “Daddy, I will hold the meat again!” While father was cutting the meat, he cut again Kulwalakul’s hand. “Hey, we don’t get anything done like this, you better go back to you mum now!” So he went back to his mum. While she was pounding rice, she kept hitting his hands all the time: Dia kembali lagi di dia pung mama. Begitu dia pigi di dia pung mama na, dia pung mama tumbuk dia pung tangan terus lagi: 43 “Ai, emaama hopang we, hene kaang bai, henu oro mahiting nu tadia henir ba eng wala hier ba nee yo!” henil ti her. “Masi na maama hopang we yo.” Henil dikang demaama hopang we. “Hey, now you go back to your dad, that’s better, he is cutting meat over there, so you go and roast a little bit for yourself!” Then he said: “Well, I will go to my daddy then!” And he went off to his father again. His father who was cutting meat cut him in his hand again: “Hey, go back to your mum, we don’t get anything done otherwise!” So he went back to his mother. His mother told him: Begitu na, dia kembali lagi di dia pung mama. Begitu na dia pung mama bilang: "Ai, begini tida baik, jadi lu ambil kita pung air bambu ko pigi timba kita pung air, oo!" “We don’t get any work done like this, you better go and fetch some water for us!” Then she took a long bamboo tube for fetching water and made a hole in the bottom. She gave it to him to carry and sent him off to fetch water. So he went and after he filled the tube he leaned it against a stone and went looking for almonds. He looked for almonds, crushed them and ate them. After that he said: “Well, now I would go back!” He went back to his bamboo tube and then he saw that it was empty: “Ooh, the bamboo is empty, why?” He went back and filled the bamboo again and came back, leaned it against the same stone and went looking for almonds. On the top of the tree there was a pigeon dropping down candle nuts. Dia timba air lagi, kasi penu habis, dia lagi kasi sandar di batu. Dia lagi pigi sapu, korek dia pung kenari ni, Burung Dara ada di atas pohon kenari ko pukul kenari jatu. 45 Henil ti, di hefangi ya: “Nukuta Poying, Poying Padalehi, nukuta Kapik Kapilei awen!” “Hm, hm, hm.” “Ah, nefiyai tenga nuku ok marang, ekanai buk nuku nok hayei.” henil ti, hen: “Hm, hm, hm.” henile. "Hmm, hmm, hmm!" "Aaa, saya pung kemiri satu piring naik, lu pung kenari satu ranke kasi jatu di saya!" Begitu na: "Hmm, hmm, hmm!" He said: “Grandfather Pigeon, Pigeon Padalehi, Grandfather Kapik Kapi Lei Aweni!” “Hmm, hmm, hmm!” “Hey, I will give you one bowl of candle nuts, you give me a bowl of almonds.” Then he said: “Hmm, hmm, hmm!” He was dropping the candle nuts and Kulwalakul was collecting then. Then he dropped some almonds for Kulwalakul. He crushed and ate them, then he went to check his bamboo again, and it was empty. So he checked the tube and found the hole in the bottom. “Oh, the bamboo tube has a hole in it, so even if I go and refill it, my mum will beat me up again. What shall I do to fix it, what should I do now?” In the meantime, Pigeon Padalehi kept dropping almonds from the tree, so he called him: “Grandfather Pigeon, Pigeon Padalehi, Grandfather Kapik Kapi Lei Aweni!” “Hmm, hmm, hmm!” “Oh, I will give you one bowl of candle nuts, you drop me a bunch of almonds!” He answered: “Okay then!” As he was calling, the sun was about to go down. What shall he do? The bamboo tube has a hole at the bottom, so even if he could fill it and take it home, his mother would beat him up again, so he said: Begini dia pukul kenari kasi jatu terus begitu ni sekarang dia pili. Pili habis, dia pigi titik dia pung kenari lagi. Dia titik dia pung kenari ko makan habis, dia lihat dia pung air lagi na air dia suda kosong lagi. Dia lihat pantat air na ada lubang. Air ada lubang. "Aaa, ini air ni rusak ni, nanti saya pigi juga baik, tapi nanti saya pung mama pukul saya lagi, jadi saya bagimana dulu baru bisa?" Begitu ni, dia pung nene Burung Dara ni ada kasi jatu kenari di atas pohon, begitu ni dia bilang: "Nene Burung Dara, Burung Padalehi, Nene Kapik Kapi Lei Aweni!" "Hmm, hmm, hmm!" "Aaa, saya pung kemiri satu piring naik, lu pung kenari satu ranke kasi jatu di saya!" Nanti dia mau bagaimana? Air bambu pung pantat suda lubang ni, dia pikul ko pigi begitu na, sebentar dia pung mama pukul dia lagi, jadi dia bilang: 47 “Nukuta, na niya hopang we masi, niya natáng tapei, maama hopang me, masi maama natáng tadia hare, a te wir panen te hu, na opang marang maiye, a henir paneni ya, na opang marang o!” “Ah, kaang to!” Henir ba nala mi, hel Poying do di datuokdi hayei kaanri, hel moku do hetoku hatáng do di bol balasa. Pukul habok sampai dia lembek-lembek. Begitu habis, dia cabut dia pung sayap habis, dia tanam di dia pung ketiak. Tanam habis, dia omong begini: "Itu ko saya pung upu, nanti saya lompat bagaimana na, lu juga lompat begitu, oo!" "Yoo, baik! Aaa, nenek, jangan sampe tida bisa!" "Ai, tida, bukan tida bisa, bisa!" begitu. Begitu na, dia turun, cabut dia pung sayap habis, tanam di dia pung ketiak habis ko ini dia pung nene ni dia lompat naik di kenari pung cabang renda begitu na, dia lompat naik jatu di dekat dia pung nene. “Grandfather, when I go to my mum, she pounds my hands; when I go to my dad, he cuts my hands. So do whatever you can so that I could get in the tree with you, just do whatever you can!” “Okay, I will!” Then Pigeon Padalehi jumped down from the tree and hit the legs and hands of the boy. He kept hitting them until they became soft. Then he pulled out some feathers from his wings and stabbed those in the boy’s armpit. Having done all this he said: “Now my boy, in whatever way I jump, you must jump like that too!” “Yes, sure! But what if I couldn’t?” “Not possible! Of course you can do that!” Then he jumped down again and pulled out some feathers from his wing and stabbed them in the boy’s armpits. Then he started jumping up, he jumped on the lowest ranch, and the boy also did, and landed next to his grandfather. The pigeon jumped on the second branch and the boy jumped next to him. They kept jumping like this until they reached the tree top. Dia lompat naik di cabang yang kedua lagi na, itu anak lompat naik duduk di dekat dia. Begitu-begitu ni, dorang lompat ko naik-naik so sampe di kenari pung puncak. Suda di kenari pung puncak, dorang dua pukul kasi jatu kenari dorang, pukul kasi jatu ni, aaa, kenari ni suda terlalu banyak sekali. Itu na tida lama tu, dia pung mama ni ada datang. When they reached the top, they started dropping the almonds, and didn’t stop until there were loads of them under the tree. Not long after that, his mother came. 49 Heya di miei mi, hen di hole: “Kuli yo, Kulwalakul yo!” henil ti: “Hm, hm, hm.” “Ah, na Poying kaang re beeka naha ama dedumu wosi yo.” henile hen di heyai paneng: “Nekul bai, bang te, ne pakul ma ne dama kiya fale atan tailo, tailo, tailo ta me, pi lek abang boolo boolo boolo” henil do hen dikang di hole: “Kuli yo, Kulwalakuli yo!” “Hm, hm, hm.” “Ah, na Poying kaang re beeka naha, ama dedumu wosia” “Nekul bai, bang te, ne pakul ma ne dama kiya fale atan tailo, tailo, tailo ta me, pi lek abang boolo, boolo, boolo” henil do dikang: “Kuli yo, Kulwalakuli yo!” “Hm, hm, hm.” “Ah, na Poying kaang re beeka naha ama hedumu wosi yo.” “Nekul bai, bang te, ne pakul ma ne dama kiya fale atan tailo, tai lo, tai lo ta me, pi lek abang boo lo, boo lo, boo lo” Henil do, hen hen war do hen sei, hedakik-dakikda. “Ah, ei henir ba enri tanel naha ya, ko ahana beeka maiye, na ekanai bole, ma hare eng awai maama hopang yaa, hare ei enra naha yo!” Henir ba nala hen beeka do, eng-enria ba o hen oro demelang yaari. 50 Dia pung mama datang habis ko panggil dia: "Kuli yoo, Kulwalakul yoo!" Begitu ni, matahari ni suda turun ko mau sore-sore. When she arrived under the tree, she started calling: “Kuli, Kulwalakul!” It answered: “Hmm, hmm, hmm!” “Hey, a pigeon is answering me, but I am calling my child.” After that she started singing: “Oh my child, I am calling you, why did I hit your hand, why did I hit your shoulders!” Then she called him again: “Kuli, Kulwalakul!” It answered: “Hmm, hmm, hmm!” “Hey, some pigeon is answering me, but I am calling my child.” After that she sang her song again: “Oh my child, I am calling you, why did I hit your hand, why did I hit your shoulders!” Then she called him again: “Kuli, Kulwalakul!” It answered: “Hmm, hmm, hmm!” “Ooh, some pigeon is answering me, but I am calling for my child.” After that she sang again: “Oh my child, I am calling you, why did I hit your hand, why did I hit your shoulders!” She went on like this but it it was getting late, it was almost evening. “Oh, don’t you cry. In the rain season I shall drop you almonds from the tree, go back, return to my father and stop crying!” She couldn’t hold it anymore and burst out crying and went back to the village. "Aaa, lu jangan menangis begitu ko, nanti hujan-angin na, saya nanti pukul kasi jatu lu pung kenari dorang, jadi lu kembali pulang di saya pung bapa, lu jangan menangis, oo!" Baku janji habis, orang ada legolego di Lilafang bilang. Lego-lego di Lilafang begitu, dorang dua baku janji bilang: “Sebentar na lu turun. Nanti saya masak jadi, lu turun ko kita dua makan baru, kita pigi lego-lego oo!” “Yoo, baik!” Begitu na dia masak makan baik-baik habis, duduk ko tunggu dia. Tunggutunggu dia ni, yang mau malam. Mau malam ni dia omong bilang: In Pada-Alwo, one day a young man and a young woman were arranging a date. They made a date to go for lego-lego dance in Lilafang, people say. One said to the other: “In a while you come to me. I will cook. After we have eaten, we can go to the lego-lego dance!” “Yes, okay!” The woman went home and finished cooking. She was waiting for the man to come. She was waiting and waiting until the evening. She said: “Why is he not coming quickly!” As she spoke, something made noise in the verandah under the house. She heard it and said: “Is anybody down there?” then it went “Hmm!” just like that. “Come in then!” It answered: “Let me take a rest for a little bit!” After she heard this, she thought: “Oh, this is bad luck!” and she just waited there. When she was waiting there, at the same time in another place people tied up the legs and hands of a dead man and burried him. The demon of that dead man was the one in the verandah below her house and now he started opening those ropes, it went like “kitingkatak, kiting-katak”. Now he has already untied all the ropes. Well, what could she do, she had to extinguish the fire. After that the demon climbed in the house. Oh, he got a very long tongue, hanging all the way down to his chest. Having seen that, she said: “What am I going to do, this is really bad!” She scooped up the food and set it in front of them. They started eating and when the woman was eating from the front of the bowl, the demon was also scooping from the same place. Then she was scooping from the top of the bowl and the demon also followed her and scooped from there. Then she scooped up from the middle, and the demon followed. She couldn’t think of anything else and then she dropped her spoon. “Oh, I just dropped my spoon!” Of course, she dropped it on purpose. So she said: “Well, I will climb down and get it!” “No, I will get it!” said the demon. Then he stretched out his arm through the bamboo floor all the way down to the ground and grabbed the spoon. “Kasi mati api dulu, baru saya datang, oo!” begitu. Tida lama tu, nanti dia buat bagimana dulu. 57 Henir ba nala mi, dikang deket do ong hayei. Ket ong hayei si: “Ai, na sei ket do mi so! Turun ambel ko nanti saya sisir saya pung rambut ko kita pigi lego-lego oo!” Begitu dia sorong tangan ko turun ambel sisir begitu na: What will she do now? She couldn’t think of anything so she dropped her comb and said: “Oh, my comb fell down. Let me go down and get it, then I can comb my hair and we will go to dance lego-lego!” She reached out her arm and wanted to climb down to get the comb, but the demon said: “No, I will get it!” The demon stretched his arm again through the floor all the way down to the ground and got the comb saying: “Oh, what am I going to do now?” She couldn’t think of anything but then she said: “Hey, I have to go down to feed the pig. I haven’t fed it yet!” When she said this the demon immediately replied: “I will go down and feed it!” Then she answered him: “Ai, saya yang turun ambel oo!” begitu. “No, this pig is used to me. When a stranger would feed it, the pig will make noise, so just let me go and feed it!” “Well, you go then!” said the demon. She put down the ladder and climbed outside. As she was climbing down, she was still shivering from fear. She missed two steps and fell down on into the verandah and it went like “ring-rong”. The demon said: “What’s wrong?” She replied: “Nothing, I fell. I slipped on the ladder!” “Yoo, itu na lu turun oo!” begitu. Begitu ni, dia su kasi turun tangga, dia turun di luar. Turun di luar ni, mungkin dia gementar jadi, dia lewat tangga pung rotan dua habis, turun jatu di atas bale-bale sampe bunyi «ring-rong» begitu. Itu setan bilang: “Ada apa?” begitu bilang: “Ai, saya jatu oo! Saya meleset di tangga oo!” 59 Henir ba nala mi, hen di rafung do nuku hapuni ya, mi ba natu homi dong hatani, di tenga do mi ba hoyoku. Tutup habis, dia lari pigi, lari pigi, lari terus. Dia suda sampe di Karetak-Afeng. Begitu ni, ini setan ni dia omong bilang: After that she caught a hornet and put it inside the wooden mortar for pounding rice and covered it with a scuttle. Then she ran away, ran and ran. She was already in Karetak-Afeng when the demon said: “Hey?” And it answered:“Hmm!” just like that. “Come up!” then it replied: “Hmmm!” just like that. So he kept waiting. “Hey!” it answered again: “Hmmm!” like that. “Come up quickly!” it replied: “Hmm!” just like that. He couldn’t wait anymore. He jumped down and went outside. Because his limbs were broken he couldn’t stand straight. To look, he pointed his butt towards the sea, and with his head hanging between his legs but there was nothing. After that he pointed his butt to the west, nothing. He pointed it to the east, nothing again. Then he pointed his butt towards the mountains, ooh, there she was. She was climbing up towards Karetak-Afeng. So the demon made himself grow to the sky to fall on her from above. But the woman was climbing the mountain and the demon couldn’t stand straight so didn’t reach her. He broke and fell down just by his own feet. The demon followed her and when he reached KaretakAfeng, the woman was already in Kamoi-Mea. “Ooo!” The demon stretched out his body but broke in the middle again and fell down again by his own feet. The woman was already in Falefang-Mea, when the demon reached Kamoi-Mea. He stretched himself out again and fell again by his own feet. He stretched himself but kept falling down by his own feet. He said: “What am I going to do now?” The woman was already in KapaiPe, but the demon kept getting closer and closer. He was now just under Falepang-Mea. He stretched his body again but broke in the middle and fell again by his own feet. In the meantime the woman was already halfway up the mountain. The demon was at that moment in Kanai-Pe. He stretched his body again but broke in the middle again and fell by his own feet. And again he stretched out, broke and fell. At that point the woman was already in Kadating-Haping, but the demon was already halfway up the slope. Halfway up the slope, the demon stretched out his body, broke in the middle and fell by his own feet and so it went on and on. Then he called: “Hey guys, there is somebody coming for you, cut her off!” Ooh, she could hear them coming through the bamboo thicket, so she put a cloth on her head and kept running. 63 Di mara yo ti, e hel neng ba dufal tapei saki do, mayol do hei kaang talaama hei bikil talaama ya, di hetantama mia ba luuk ba. Begitu, itu perempuan dia kasi pisa orang pung tangan ko naik, naik duduk di tenga-tenga mesba bilang. Duduk ni, tida lama na, orang bilang: When she finally reached the village she saw the young man with whom she made a date. With six women on his right, six on his left side he was dancing lego-lego. The woman split the people dancing in the circle and entered in the middle and sat down in the offering place. Not long after that some of the dancing people said: “Mm, something is stinking here. A cockroach or something!” and after a while again: “Mm, something stinks here!” like that. Although she heard them, she didn’t care. She thought, if she would go back and sleep, she would get killed. She stayed in the middle of the dancing circle and when it was about to dawn she said: “Dawn quickly, dawn finally!” like that. But it didn’t dawn quickly enough. “Dawn now, dawn quickly, let it dawn finally!” like that. In a while it really dawned. She was sitting there until the dawn, until the sun came up, people say. When the sun came up, people stopped dancing. She went to the man and told him: “Let’s go down to Afena-Hapong and search lice for each other!” Of course, the man wanted to go with her. Because the demon was playing with her before that, the man wanted to go. "Hm, apa yang busuk? Kecoa busuk ni.” begitu tida lama lagi: "Hm, satu barang busuk ni!" begitu. Begitu tapi, dia malas tau, nanti dia tidur begitu, nanti dia mati. 65 Henil do, neng do hen di mayol do hebikeang hiéng, hepikai dong hawali ba hada we hada me, henil do, mayol do hen hieng do kabei mok ba. Begitu na dia omong bilang: "Ai, saya pung mata mengantuk sedikit jadi, lu tidur lagi di saya pung paha, saya cari lu pung kutu lagi oo!” begitu. In the beginning it was the man who was searching for the lice, going through her hair back and forth. While he was doing that she got a bit sleepy. She said: “Hey, I am getting a bit sleepy, so now it’s your turn. Put your head down on my lap and let me search the lice in your hair!” There was a fire next to them. She blew it up again and put a long pin in it. After that she was searching for lice in his hair back and forth. While she was searching for the lice, the man fell asleep. After he fell asleep on her lap, she took the pin that she heated up in the fire and stabbed it in his belly. Then she took it out and stabbed it in her own belly too. She embraced him and they both fell down among the stones. Because it happened this way, people say that from that time onward young men and women had to stop going out for dates with each other. If not, it could happen some other time again. That’s the end. Habis di situ. 67 Mon Mot mon Anderias Padafani Mon Mot mon do di yaa, oro iti Lelawi, hen sei ama kaang do tafuda neei. Begitu na, tinggal hanya perempuan hamil satu yang lari cungkil lobang di tana ko masuk tidur di dalam situ sama dengan dia pung anjing. Dorang dua tidur di dalam lobang. Di situ ni, haus juga dorang tahan, lapar juga dorang tahan. Mon Mot, the giant snake came down to Lelawi. Over there, he killed and devoured all the people, all who were there. Just one woman was left. She was pregnant, but she escaped. She fled, dug up a hole in the ground and stayed there with her dog. They were staying there until they got hungry and thirsty. Then the dog went out, found water to bathe and came back to the hole again. After this, every morning and evening the dog left and came back twice or three times. The woman decided to follow her dog, wherever it went she followed it until she also found the place with water. After that she kept fetching water from there until the day she gave birth. It was in that hole, where she gave birth to her children and those children were two boys. She planted some bananas before, so now she went to that place to pluck them and always brought some home for her children until they grew up. Then she made arrows and bows for her sons to hunt field rats and locusts. They lived like this until her sons grew up into young men. One day the sons asked: “Mother, why do we stay in this hole, don’t we have our village too? Why don’t we go there?” Dia pung anak tu, laki-laki dua. Tadi dia su tanam pisang dorang jadi, dia pigi ko petik pisang satu bua datang kasi anak dorang makan terus, sampe dia pung anak suda besar. Lagi dia bikin dorang dua pung busur dengan anak pana ko dorang pigi pana tikus dengan belalang. Begitu tu, anak dua ni suda besarbesar, suda nyong-nyong. Jadi dorang turun tanya sama dorang pung mama bilang: “Mama, kenapa baru kita tidur di lobang saja? Kalo kita juga punya kampung, na lebi baik kita pigi di sana saja, ko?” 69 “Adiye, newil ayoku ye. Pi hen yaa beeka do, rining ayoku wala naha, rido bai, rining faring, haba Mon Mot mon di e riama kaang loku tafuda neei hu, yal pi dowir ba na rido ba dong siei, nala.” “Ai, hel baai pi laki te, mong baai pi lake, rowa baai pi lak, hel yo kul.” Jadi jangan pigi!” Dorang pigi habis, sampe di pinggir kampung na, dorang panggil Ular Mon Mot tu bilang begini: "Hei, Nene Ular Mon Mot!" Begitu na, itu Ular Mon Mot dia menyahut bilang: "Uuu!" “Oh, my children, we cannot go back there, it’s just the two of you now, but there used to be many of us, until Giant snake Mon Mot came and killed everybody. Now we live here because I fled here, that’s why.” “Well, we have to go anyway, dead or alive, we must go!” She had to do what her children wanted and so they went back to their village. When they got there, they built a house. Then the sons asked her again: “Mother, where is the village of Mon Mot the Snake?” “Oh dear, don’t ask me this, if you go there, once he spots you, he will kill you. So don’t you go there!” Her children answered her: "Oh, we have to go!" After this they climbed a high tree, where they built themselves a house. They brought hundred pieces of iron and put them down there, they fetched axes, swords and whetstones; they brought them all up there and put them in the house. After that, they made the fire by blowing the cinder and fanning the fire. Having done so, they left their mother near the fire saying: "Mother, watch over the fire, we will go find him!" They left and came to the edge of that village and started calling Mon Mot the Snake: "Hey, Old Mon Mot!" They called again: "Hey you, you already killed and devoured all our people, our whole tribe, so you may as well come and devour us too!" People in the village were playing on gongs but Mon Mot the Snake interrupted them saying: "Hey guys, stop the gongs. There are two young locusts calling for me here, so you stop playing now!" The gongs stopped but the two called again: "Hey, Old Mon Mot, Old Mon Mot!" So Mon Mot the Snake answered them: "Yeah!" "Hey, you killed and devoured our tribe, all our people, you murdered everybody, so you may as well come and swallow us too!" The two children were calling him like this, so Mon Mot the Snake said:"Well then!" They ran down. They fled to Rolmelang and then they saw him climbing towards them. So they ran down to Mitingfui. There they looked again and saw that Mon Mot the Snake was coming down from Rolmelang. After that they called him again: "Hey, Old Mon Mot, hey you, you are running astray, we are now down here, in Mitingfui!" Having heard that, Mon Mot the Snake rushed to Mitingfui and then to Kawaaka Lohu. The two brothers called him again: "Hey, Old Mon Mot, we are here!" After that they climbed in their tree house. Begitu na, orang di bawa dorang ada pukul gong bagus-bagus, jadi Ular Mon Mot dia kasi diam ko dia omong bilang: "Hei, kasi berenti pukul gong tu, saya pung belalang dua ada berteriak panggil saya, jadi jangan pukul gong oo!" Begitu na, dorang dua panggil lagi: "Nene Mon Mot, Nenek Mon Mot!" Terus Mon Mot dia menyahut bilang: "Uuu!". Hel do di, di we tideng kika naha te nala do sei, hen baai o la marang. “Nekuta ak!” Di ak, kaala dieng la do saai yo, ho, taber ba yaa yo anai hayei. Begitu na, Lutangfan bilang: "Mama, lu jangan takut la!" Terus dorang dua bilang: "Nene, buka lu pung mulut ko kami dua lompat masuk di dalam." Pas Ular Mon Mot dia buka mulut na, dorang kasi turun kapak dorang. Tapi Ular Mon Mot tetap ada naik terus. Begitu na, Lutangfan omong lagi bilang: "Nene, buka lu pung mulut ko kami dua lompat turun." Begitu na, Ular Mon Mot buka dia pung mulut ko dorang kasi turun besibesi sepotong, batu asa mera, tidak na kasi turun barang-barang lain dorang. Itu juga, dia tetap ada naik. Jadi dorang panggil lagi bilang: When they climbed in, Mon Mot the Snake was already under the tree, right in front of the ladder. Their mother was so scared, she nearly peed herself from fear, but Lutangfan said: "Mother, don't be afraid!" Then both brothers called the snake: "Old Mon Mot, open your mouth and we will jump inside!" Right after he opened his mouth, they dropped axes in it. But Mon Mot the Snake kept climbing up the tree. Lutangfan called him again: "Old Mon Mot, open your mouth, so we jump inside!" After that Mon Mot the Snake opened his mouth again and they immediately dropped all the iron pieces and red whetstones inside. It didn’t help and the snake kept climbing on. Then they called him again: "Old man, open your mouth!" He did so they poured hot pap inside, the whole kettle and right after that the snake slid down and fell on the ground. When Mon Mot the Snake fell on the ground, both brothers wanted to go down immediately but their mother didn’t want that: "My boys, the old one will kill you, so don’t you go down!" But Lutangfan replied her: "No, we have to get down!" "Nene, buka lu pung mulut!" Pas dia buka dia pung mulut, tu yang dorang kasi turun botok panas satu periuk tu ko dia langsung jatu, turun di tana. Ular Mon Mot jatu di tanah ko dorang mau turun begitu na, mama tua tida mau ko dia bilang: "Hei, saya pung anak dua, itu sebentar kamu pung nene dia makan kamu tu, jadi jangan turun, oo!" Tapi Lutangfan bilang: "Aaa, tida, kami turun dulu!" Dorang bawa kalewang dengan parang ko satu lompat turun dekat dia pung kepala, satu di dekat dia pung ekor. Having taken their swords and bush knives, one jumped to the snake’s head, the other to his tail. 75 Di sapadang haliel ti, hekuta di hefangi: “Neratala ayoku, ri nel feng he! Let me speak first! I am in your power, so spare me for a while, until I finish speaking. After you kill me, you have to take a piece of my flesh and a slice of my skin, and put them on each of the pole trays, under every house. After that you will collect old bamboo and make fire and then you will dance lego-lego till dawn." So it happened. After they slaughtered Mon Mot the Snake, they cut up his flesh and sliced his skin and put those bits on the pole trays below each of the house. When they finished that, they piled up old bamboo, lit the fire and started dancing lego-lego around the fire. It was around midnight when someone put down the ladder from each house, and people started coming down from there and gathered around. Having gathered together they went and joined the lego-lego dance. They joined the dance and kept dancing till dawn. There were many of them again. Everybody who was killed and devoured by the snake before came back and their offsprings live till now in Nurdin and Mitingfui. That’s the end. "Cucu dua, kamu jangan bunu saya ko saya omong dulu! There was a man and a woman; they had two children, two boys. After the younger and the older boy grew up a bit, their mother and father both died. The boys didn’t know where to go. They went to the houses of other people and were sitting in their verandah. The people chased them away as dogs. The two brothers were crying and went to their uncle. But also their uncle chased them away as dogs. While crying, they went back home. The season during which people work in the field came, they also had to go. They didn’t have any seeds. They have no rice to sow and no corn to plant. They had to find some seeds in the chaff around the houses. Those were the only seeds that they got. After that they returned home. They had already burned the fields and prepared them to be sown. They sew one field with corn and one with rice. After that they kept weeding both fields until the got a rich harvest from both rice and corn. The rich people came to barter their drums for corn and gongs for rice. When both boys grew up, one day they were sitting together talking: "Brother, you should get a wife!" said the younger brother. "I don't want to! You must get married first!" 79 “Naha, naana, ede eitu mayol mia e!” Henaana do di mayol mi. Di mayol mi yo, tung karnuku re tung karayokda hal dara moku wala hiéng naha. After this the older brother got married. After being married for about ten or twenty years, he still didn’t have a child. He was still without a child and his wife was getting too old. At that time he called his younger brother again. "Brother, come to me!" They were sitting with each other talking and the older one said: "Brother, I have been married for a while but I don’t have any children so far. So now it is your turn to get married. You have to get married and have children!” "Even if I will get married now and have a child, nobody will call him the first-born one. Instead you should marry again, find yourself another wife and she will bear you a child. Only that child will be called first-born.” After that the older brother left and was going around. They say that when he went to bathe, he saw a young girl by the water washing herself. The shine of the stars fell on her breasts. "Girl, would you like to be my wife?" "No way, my body is full of wounds that cannot be cured. My eyes are blind." "Ah, I did not ask about your eyes. I want to know whether you can bear me a child or not!" Jadi dia pung kaka duluan kawin. Dia kawin na suda sepulu tahun ko dua pulu tahun tapi, dia belum punya anak. Belum lahir anak, dia suda mandul. Itu na dia panggil dia pung adik lagi. “Adik, lu datang dulu!” Begitu, dia pung kaka jalan-jalan. Dia turun mandi bilang ko dia turun ni, nona satu ada mandi tapi cahaya bintang ada melekat dia pung dada. “Nona, lu kawin saya ni bisa ko tida?” “Aaa, saya ni, luka banyak, tida bisa sembu! "Well, if you say so, why don’t you marry me!" He took her with him and brought her to his home. After they came home, they slept and woke up together and she became pregnant. It was about two days before she gave birth, her husband said: "My first wife, you must look after my second wife! She is about to give birth tomorrow or the day after that. You will look after her yourself, you must not ask other people to come!" "Yes, okay." "I have to go to some other villages in the meantime to buy drums." After the husband left the second wife started to complain about her back. The first wife told her: Laki-laki dia antar dia ko dorang pigi di dia pung rumah. Dorang pigi habis, tidur bangun dengan dia ni, dia suda hamil. Lagi dua hari ni, dia mau lahir anak begitu na, dia pung laki dia omong bilang: “Istri sulung, lu ini jaga istri bungsu tu! Besok-lusa ni, dia melahirkan, jadi lu yang jaga dia, lu jangan pigi ajak orang lain ko jaga dia, lu yang jaga dia!” “Yoo, baik!” “Saya ni, saya pigi di kampung lain, saya pigi di kampung lain cari gong moko dulu!” Dia pung suami suda jalan, dia pung istri ni, istri sulung ni, dia pung istri bungsu dia menangis dia pung belakang na, dia omong bilang: “Lu duduk, saya pigi timba air ko datang dulu, oo!” Tapi dia pigi ni, dia pigi timba air, ni yang tida datang habis, dia pigi jolok jantung pisang. Dia pi jolok jantung pisang habis, bawa datang ko taru di dia pung samping, ko jaga istri bungsu. "You wait here. I have to go fetch some water now." But she did not go to fetch water, that’s why she didn’t come back immediately. Instead she went to prod a banana blossom. She brought it home and put it next to her and was looking after the second wife. She helped her to give birth and the child that was born was a healthy kid. She took that banana blossom to the second wife who was blind: Jaga istri bungsu ko anak turun ni, manusia baik-baik yang ada turun ni, tapi dia ambel jantung pisang ko kasi tau sama istri bungsu yang mata buta itu: 83 “Oi, ta eneng di hefanga ti, ko di moku kaang hayal ba yo, haba yal do a iti baleei wataka hu hayal do. Tapi sekarang ni, jantung pisang yang ada lahir ni.!” "Oh now, your husband said that you would have a healthy child, but now, look at this, you gave birth to a banana blossom instead! Just touch it. This is the banana blossom that you just gave birth to. Your husband said you would have a healthy child. But you have given birth to this banana blossom here." After the first wife stole the child, she took it to the river and left it there. It went the same way with the second child that the second wife bore and also with the third and fourth. She took them one by one and left them by the river. When the last, the seventh child was born, it was a girl. The first wife said again: "This is a banana blossom!" Then she took the child to the river and left it there. Finally, the husband came back: "Ooh, where are my children that you bore? You had already seven children, where are they?" "I gave birth to these banana blossoms!" "This is not a human being but a beast, take her and lock her in the pig stable!" People took her and locked her in the stable. After that the husband said to his first wife: "You can shit on her, give her cassava leaves, banana skin, but don’t give her any food. Don’t give her corn. This one here that I married is not a human but a beast so if you want you can shit on her. Istri pertama dia bawa anak habis, pigi lepas di kali besar. They kept eating those until they were almost adult. One day Karfehawa went to search for crabs and shrimps. He was turning stones and catching crabs. Those that he caught he put next to him on the river bank. The children came quietly, took his crabs away and ate them. When Karfehawa turned, he did not see his crabs and shrimps. When he looked better, he saw the footprint of a child. He kept searching for crabs and shrimps, putting them again on the river bank, but this time he was secretly looking. When the children came to steal again, he caught them and asked: “How many of you are here?” "There are seven of us." "Well, my grandchildren, you are astray, you better come with me. Let's go home!" Karfehawa, the evil man, he took the children to his house, and when they were almost there his wife started calling: "How nice, my young locusts are here, now I will have their toenails, I will eat their fingers!" “Yoo, baik!” The children were paddling away and the six boys were saying: “Now we are leaving!” But their sister said: “No wait, those two are dead now so we will go back and burry them in the sand.” “No way, they are trying to fool us!” “No, they are really dead now, let’s go back now!” They turned back, the girl jumped off the canoe as first, and all her brothers followed. They dug out a hole in the sand, lifted up that dead man with his wife and burried them with the sand. After that they went again: “Sister, will we turn to the east now, or to the west!” “We will go to the west!” They were paddling on and on: “Well, now we should go ashore and visit our family, no?” “No, they are not our relatives!” Then they paddled on: “Well, maybe these are our relatives here?” “No, these are not our relatives!” They kept paddling until they came to Likwatang. “Our relatives live here!” They went ashore from there: “Yes, they live here. They fetched their clothes, blankets and sarongs from the canoe. They also brought their gongs and drums and placed them in front of their shed. They put their rice in the granary basket inside the house. They also stored their corn inside and then they spent the night there. They stayed there perhaps for one week. On the seventh day, many people gathered to carry a log for their father. Because so many people gathered to carry the log for their father, the girl said to her brothers: “Brothers, because our parents are bad, we do not live in our village and the oldest of us doesn’t wear a betel nut basket.” Then the girl added: “I will carry the bamboo water tube. When those people come near us with their log, I will make it heavy. After the log becomes heavy, they will come to us and ask you guys: “Can you help us carry the log up to the village?” You will help them to carry it up to the village. But if people invite you to chew betel nuts when you arrive there, you will refuse. After you put down the log, you will walk in the eastern direction to the stable from stones and look inside. The people passed along them with the heavy log and climbed in the middle of the hill: “Let’s have a break for a little bit!” After they rested for a while, the log got very heavy. They came down and asked the six brothers: “Alorese men!” “Yes?” “Can you help us carry the log up to the village? After that you can come back down!” “Yes, we can!” They went up. They cut the ropes that were holding the log and only four of them were enough to lift the log up and carried it up to the village on the top of the hill. When they arrived there, they put down the log and went to look in the stable. They saw an old woman in there. They went back without even having a rest. The villagers said: “Let’s smoke a cigarette together. Let’s chew some betel nuts and drink a cup of water!” “No, we don’t want to. Our sister is alone at home, so we have to go back now!” After that all six of them went back to their sister. “How did it go?” asked their sister. “You told us to look in that stable. Well, there is an old woman in there!” “Well, let’s go down. Because you have refused to drink or eat, they will bring us a goat and corn in a while. I will take the corn, but we give them back the goat. I will explain to them: “Although we are Muslims we only eat pork. We never eat goat meat, so we don’t want that goat!”” When the people indeed brought them corn and one goat, the girl told them: “I can take the corn, but you have to take back your goat. We only eat pork!” The villagers went back with their goat and brought down a pig: “Oh, but we don’t want a male pig. We only want the pig that you keep in the stone stable. Bring us that one!” After the villagers went back up: “You have to bind it up properly. Bind up her mouth, bind up her legs too, with her hands and carry her down on a pole!” The villagers tied up the old woman and carried her with a pole down to the seven siblings. The girl said: “The oldest must stand here, the second here, the third here, and I am the last!” The girl boiled water and cooked the rice. Then she brought it down to serve it later to the woman who the villagers were just bringing down. When the villagers arrived, they gave the old woman to the oldest of the brothers and he passed her onto his younger brothers and they passed her onto their sister. 109 “Kaan ta, rolake.” Dolak haba hemaama dolak naha el mayol do heneng dolak naha ya. “Wah, maama olak re!” “Ai, na lak beeka ye, madi ya iti do hedo ama kaang ba hedo nife ye ni hok ek, hok aisa ye, alot kaang, alot beeka mi, hok tok haba yal do ri wit ba siei hare, ri feng ba nee baai ba ri feni na hién te naha ba ri feng naha baai ba na hién te.” “Ai el baai olake.” Haba dolak dokaleng henil mi, mayol do di iti hel deya do hatopi haweli, hawet hanaha loku do baai keke, hieng bika ba hieng akuta mai do baai datáng mi ba kusing ming nati ya, telang masi, hieng do wan kaanri ye. Then they said to the villagers who brought the woman down: “You have already brought her, now you can go back!” All the villagers went back except an old man, the husband of that old woman. He didn’t want to go back. “Hey old man, why don’t you go back?” “I cannot go! This person here used to be our pig. We were shitting on her and peeing on her. We fed her leaves to eat. You have now taken her so I must see what you will do with her. If you kill her and eat her I must see it. If you don’t kill her, I want to see it as well!” “Just go back!” The old man didn’t want to go back. After the girl washed her mother, she cleaned her teeth and her blind eyes. She lifted the eye lids with her finger nails and those eyes were healed. The old woman could see again. Then they dressed her in nice clothes and said to the old man: “You go home now!” “No way, dear children, I cannot go home before you explain me everything!” “This is our mother!” Then he told them: “Oh, I am your mother’s husband. When she gave it to him, her husband said: “Hey, you are chewing a nice smelling betel nut, so wy don’t you give me a bit of that too?” So she said: “Well, all betel nuts are the same anyway!” “No, it is not, yours is very fragrant, so why don’t you give me a little bit?” They were about to go to the field. When they were about to go, the husband said: “Hey, I will come after you. I will follow you!” "Aaa, lu ni makan lu pung pinang wangi, kenapa baru lu tida kasi saya sedikit?" Begitu na: "Aaa, pinang ni sama semua tu!" "Tida la, lu punya terlalu wangi ni, kenapa baru lu tida kasi saya sedikit?" Begitu ni, dorang pi potong kebun. They had already finished eating then and the wife went off first. After she left, the husband started looking for betel nuts everywhere in the house, but there was none. He climbed down to the threshold and lied down on his back. When he looked up he saw a betel nut basket hanging under the loft. So he climbed up and searched through the little basket and found two betel nuts inside. He took one and went down again and split it. After he split it he chewed some and wow, it was really fragrant. In the evening they came back. His wife cooked and they both ate. Both husband and wife ate. After they have eaten, they chewed some betel nuts. When the wife went up to search through her betel nut basket, there was just one betel nut left. “Who has taken my betel nut? Earlier on there were two in here!” So he said: “Oh, I took one and chewed it!” Then she said: “I don’t like it this way. You must go find some, even if you die. You must get me some, even if you perish. You must bring me betel nuts, even if you vanish!” After that he answered: “Okay then!” He went to roast himself some corn, pounded it and put in his small basket. Then he took his small basket, wore it on his shoulder and went away. As he went, he came under a betel tree. When he came under the betel tree he said: “Where can I get the fragrant betel nuts?” He climbed the betel tree, plucked one nut and chewed it but it was not fragrant. “Oh, this one is not good. He climbed down, chewed them, but they were not fragrant. So he said: “Well, I shouldn’t have married that woman. I married a mean woman!” Then he went again and the sun was already setting. It was almost below the horizon. One half was still above the horizon and the other half was under it. He went and saw another betel tree growing above a pond, but the trunk was crooked, growing up and down. This betel tree was very crooked and tall. Then he thought of what his wife told him: “You must go find some, even if you die. You must get me some, even if you perish. You must bring me betel nuts, even if you vanish!” 119 “Hare, na mong baai mara, malaida baai mara. Kilra baai yaa mara, naida baai na mara!” henil di marei. Then he plucked one more and chewed it. This was very fragrant. He wanted to pluck another one, but he dropped it in the pond below. So he started climbing down again. As he was climbing down, a big snake was climbing up the tree from below him. The snake said: “Where do you want to go? Will you go through my butt or through my mouth?” Then he continued: “Why did you come here to steal betel nuts?” So the man answered: “Oh well, I ate my wife’s betel nuts and she then told me: “You must go find some, even if you die. You must get me some, even if you perish. You must bring me betel nuts, even if you vanish!”” The snake said: “Well, you take your betel nuts, go back and give them to your wife. But don’t make it long. If you stay long, you will be in trouble.” The man aswered: “Yeah, okay!” Then he took the betel nuts home and gave them to his wife saying: “After you take your betel nuts, I have to go back!” His wife went to the door and pulled him back. Habis di situ. “Don’t do that. I have promissed to go, or else there will be troubles. just take your betel nuts and let me go back!” He gave her the betel nuts and said: “Stop holding me, I have to go!” “Well, where do you want to go?” “You have commanded me earlier on saying: You must go find some betel nuts, even if you die. You must get me some, even if you perish. You must bring me betel nuts, even if you vanish! So I went and now I count as dead, vanished. Take your betel nuts and let me go! Don’t hold me back, there will be troubles!” “What kind of troubles?” Not long after that, it was as if a black lake rose under the door and kept rising under the verandah. “Don’t hold me back, just look down under the door!” She looked down and saw the black water rising. It was very scary and she did not know what to do. So she let go his hand and he climbed down from the house. After he climbed outside, the water immediately dried out. Then two very pretty women appeared: one in front of the man and one behind him. The man was in the middle. His wife was crying, telling herself: “You have ordered him yourself!” but she couldn’t help it. The two women left with the man and entered a big tree and disappeared in it. That’s the end. 123
