This time affords the chance to pause and consider our many blessings as a Sacred Heart Community. Each aspect of the weekend has a unique purpose. Friday is our moment to have a great time while securing essential funding for need-based scholarships and the building fund. Those gathering on Friday for Celebrate 2015 in support of Carrollton’s dreams include current parents, parents of alumnae, alumnae, friends, current and former faculty and staff. On Saturday the alumnae gather. Some are celebrating reunion years; others simply want to see friends. All rejoice in the moment to gather once again in El Jardin. Sunday is our Family Day during which we celebrate mass and thank God for the blessing we know as Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart. Mass is followed by a celebration of relationships, old and new. The entire weekend has come to be central in our community life. This year we celebrate the Arts in our lives. To educate young people to beauty is to open their hearts and minds to mystery. The ultimate objective of Sacred Heart education is to communicate the love God has for each of us. To know God and to develop a relationship with God, one must be open to mystery. The natural beauty of Carrollton, both in terms of nature and in architecture, supports our endeavors in awakening the students to beauty. Our curriculum taught by our extraordinary Arts Faculty builds on this foundation by awakening in our students their natural creativity. Our students develop their talents as artists, as dramatists, as dancers, as musicians, as photographers, as writers, and as poets. In the process they expand their souls and come to know God and to see themselves as God’s Beloved. Thank you for joining us at Celebrate 2015. Please know that you are supporting a sacred work — that of Sacred Heart education. We offer you our Anniversary Weekend Program Booklet with a view to share with you some insights about our Arts Program and our formation of creative, compassionate leaders for the future. Please read through it carefully and pay close attention to the names of our sponsors, benefactors and supporting participants without whom Celebrate 2015 could not be successful. We owe a special thank you to Dr. Patricio and Yury Rossi, our Chairs for Friday’s Evening under the Stars. Their generosity and leadership inspired our extraordinary volunteers whose imagination created an extraordinary event. The Alumnae Council and Alumnae Director, Maria Cristina Garcia ’00 designed a wonderful evening for our alumnae, our reunion classes and our special guests, members of the Class of 1965. Sunday’s festivities once again will see the gathering of Carrollton’s extended family in a magnificent and joy filled day as we all enjoy hearing and watching our students demonstrate the fruit of our arts programs. Thank you all. May our continued Jubilee celebration inspire hope within every member of our community and thereby strengthen Carrollton as a School of Christ’s Heart. May this hope inspire this and future generations of Carrollton to embrace the vision of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat and the values of Sacred Heart education. May God bless each and every one. Juanes is anchoring the weekend long celebration of the arts in commemoration of the 53rd Anniversary of the founding of Carrollton with a private performance. With seven solo albums to his credit and multi-platinum sales of over 16 million copies, Latin music superstar, Juanes is the world’s leading all-Spanish language rock artist-both a 2-time GRAMMY® and 19-time LATIN GRAMMY® winner with nine #1 singles on Billboard’s Latin Singles charts. Working with famed rock producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Killers, The Rolling Stones, The Dave Matthews Band… and GRAMMY Producer of the Year), Juanes’ latest album “Loco De Amor” was released in the spring of 2014 and debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums chart and topped iTunes sales in over a dozen countries. Juanes is also frequently recognized as one of the Spanish-speaking world’s leading social media voices with an online following of over 18 million fans. On December 10, 2014 a press release announced Juanes has written an original song titled “Juntos (Together)” specifically for Disney’s “McFarland, USA,” which he recorded for the end title track of the movie. Based on the 1987 true story, “McFarland, USA” follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner). “McFarland, USA” releases February 20, 2015. In addition to writing an original title track for a Disney movie planned for wide release, the Colombian rock superstar has reached a Hollywood milestone with a unique multi-song arrangement between a Latin music artist and a primetime English network series. This began with the production prominently featuring Juanes’ new single “Una Flor” in the October 13 premiere episode of the new The CW Network series, Jane the Virgin. The Colombian superstar’s dedication as a global activist also extends far beyond his passionate lyrics and is seen in his wide ranging charitable work for his own Mi Sangre Foundation and as a co-founder of the “Paz sin Fronteras” (Peace Without Borders) organization. This multi-talented, multimedia performer is an inspiration to the students and the adult community of Carrollton as he embodies the very goals of Sacred Heart education through his commitment to social justice. Juanes established the Mi Sangre Foundation to help victims of anti-personnel mines. In 2005, he was named by Time as one of the world’s 100 most influential people. On November 15, 2005, he was honored at the annual benefit gala for Sir Paul McCartney’s Adopt-A-Minefield for his work as a Goodwill Ambassador for “United for Colombia”, a non-profit organization that raises awareness about the impact of land mines within Colombia. He has performed before the European Parliament, as part of a campaign to increase awareness against the use of landmines around the world. On July 19, 2006, French Culture Minister Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres awarded Juanes with the highest cultural honor given by France, L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, declaring him “Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters” for his work in social activism. 12 ❧ Celebrate 2015 Commemorative Program Celebrate 2015 Commemorative Program ❧ 13 Celebrate! St. Madeleine Sophie Barat urged Educators of the Sacred Heart “…to know how to inspire in our pupils a passion for the beautiful.” We believe that to educate young people to beauty is to open their hearts and minds to mystery; it is our sacred imperative. Given the magnificent setting of Carrollton both in terms of nature and architecture, we are daily inspired to awaken in the students this passion. The Fine Arts Faculty plays a unique role by helping the students learn to see with the eyes and listen with the ears of their souls. Dr. Walter Busse, High School Music Director believes that... “comprehensive visual and performing arts formation is integral to any well rounded quality education.” This conviction is shared by all the faculty. From the Montessori classes in creativity/expression and the Kindergarten violin classes, to the choral and violin classes in Primary and the strings, woodwinds and choral classes of the Intermediate School; from the dedicated instrumental and choral programs of the Junior High School, to the visual and performing arts programs of the High School culminating in the International Baccalaureate Program, the Arts are central to the curriculum. This comprehensive Fine Arts Curriculum rooted in the Goals and Criteria contributes... “directly to the formation of Sacred Heart Women whose artistic talents are gifts from God,” explains Debbie Consuegra, School Liturgist and Junior High Music Director. “Our desire is to form women of admirable 22 ❧ Celebrate 2015 Commemorative Program mind, the body hearts and lifelong learners of the arts,” states Jackie Gonzalez, Music Faculty Grades 1-5. Well versed in the research and data demonstrating the strong link between successful academic “How are the visual and performing arts important... let me count the ways. As a visual artist, I see the need for students to have the good fortune to be able to step into an alternate world. A world where they can create as they wish, explore and experiment. The outlet is a necessary part of growing up whole and open to new directions and opportunities life places in our path. The arts gives us the eyes to see from a variety of perspectives and the shoes to walk in the shoes of others. Students can lose themselves in a character on stage or develop a new sense of self through the portal which we enter as one paints, plays an instrument or sings in the choir. We want our children to be multidimensional. We want our girls to be able to truly appreciate a walk through a museum, an opera, a musical, the ballet. Being significantly exposed to the arts enables each of our daughters to understand the dedication and passion visual and performing artists bring to their craft. Who knows what seed will be planted as a student steps on the stage for the first time, completes her first painting or sings for the new Pope in Rome? We need to nurture the seeds of creativity which are just below the surface of our Carrollton community.” — Maxine Cohn, Primary and Montessori Art performance and the inclusion of the arts in the curriculum, our Fine Arts Faculty ensures that students develop discipline and imagination. Madeline Neely, Strings Teacher across all grades, cites multiple benefits of arts education including “the development of fine motor skills, the stimulation of different regions of the brain, improved reading scores, sense of accomplishment, development of social skills, patience and discipline with oneself and others as benefits to the arts in one’s education.” The arts necessitate creative problem solving, critical thinking and being present to and in the moment. April Liberty, Montessori Music and Strings Teacher across the grades, considers the Arts essential to students wanting to be and the soul “When educating a person one has to consider the whole, body and soul! It is important for a young woman of the Sacred Heart to be educated in Dance. When she is in tune with her body, she is in tune with her soul, and when she is in tune with her soul, she has the potential to be closer to God. Movement is not just there to fulfill aesthetics, but rather to convey a message, a feeling, an emotion. Through the study of dance, young women of the Sacred Heart learn how to enhance their creativity and explore their imagination by experimenting with movement and improvisation. Dance is essential for young women to grow in grace both spiritually and physically.” — Gordana Tepavac, HS Dance and IB Dance versatile adults. “In order for students to be versatile, they need to know and understand the world around them. They need to be able to see, feel and hear what they encounter.” Kari Snyder, High School Art and IB Visual Arts, believes that the arts can teach students “…that perfection can be stiff and stifling and messiness can be refreshing, that taking risks and making mistakes often lead to something better than one’s original intention.” Being able to take risks and Cristina Hirmas ‘17 “Self Portrait” • Mixed Media navigate change are essential skills for young people if they are to walk into their future with confidence. Experimentation plays a role in helping students develop both skills. Our Fine Arts Educators encourage the students to enjoy the process of creating; they help them embrace the unexpected and not be too concerned with the end result. “Art pushes risk and experimentation through the enjoyment of process. It is a time to play with ideas and materials,” explains Moira Holohan, our Intermediate Art Teacher. “We teach the students not to be too careful with their work, but to push it further, reaching for new and different conclusions... Risk and experimentation are essential in education, and students need to embrace this kind of mindset.” Sacred Heart Women are called to be compassionate, effective leaders. Zena Rodriguez, High School Drama and IB Theater Arts, believes that... “The arts contribute to the formation of the Sacred Heart Woman by making her more attuned to the world in which she lives; they allow students to see the world from perspectives that include a variety of dimensions.” Research in brain development and in the different types of Continued 0n page 24 Celebrate 2015 Commemorative Program ❧ 23 Arts inspire the mind, the body and the soul Continued from page 23 intelligences demand that 21st Century Educators cultivate creativity in themselves and in students. Alejandra Bunster, Carrollton’s Curriculum Advisor and Creativity/Expression Teacher across all grades, works with students and faculty in developing programs and curricular projects which support the strengthening of mental imaging, spatial reasoning, image manipulation, graphic and artistic skills and active imagination, all intent on enhancing each one’s creativity. “...We must all work on our creativity - to discover it, recognize it, embrace it, nourish it, expand it and use it. Exercising our imagination will benefit us on every level,” explains Mrs. Bunster. All our Fine Arts Faculty echoes Mrs. Wiesen, “Within the arts, we express our collective or personal human experience through our heart and our soul.” This very seeing and hearing helps students develop characteristics such as compassion, empathy and sensitivity. As they grow older their capacity to undertake deep questions about human existence feeds 24 ❧ Celebrate 2015 Commemorative Program their hearts and minds. “Essentially, the arts speak to the soul,” believes Katherine Banks, Junior High Art and Yearbook Advisor. Is there any wonder why the Arts are so vibrant at Carrollton! As our students develop their talents as artists, as dramatists, as dancers, as musicians, as photographers, as writers, and as poets, they are expanding their souls and coming to see themselves as God’s Beloved. In their hands, minds and hearts is our future. We may be filled with hope. Victoria Stone/Studio 1791 Photography “It is marvelous to watch a child’s face as she listens to music. When children see a piece of wood or metal transform from a lifeless item to a vehicle for beautifully organized sound, their eyes fill with wonder. It is magic that makes the instrument come to life…. No one knows why music has the power to change our mood and perspective. The desire for music that inhabits each one of us is as basic as it is mysterious. It is this primal need for music that makes it an indispensable part of the education of the Sacred Heart Woman. Music creates a bridge from the seen to the unseen, the imagination to reality, and the earthly to the Divine.” — Kirsten Camacho, Carrollton’s Woodwind Teacher across all grades Victoria Stone/Studio 1791 Photography Celebrate 2015 Commemorative Program ❧ 25 Life… what a beautiful thing! Much research over decades has emphasized the value of arts in the curriculum. Dexterity, expression, decision-making, visual comprehension and creativity are easily identified. Most important of all has been the quantifiable benefits of improved overall academic performance as the developmental benefits become tools in the students’ hands. In May 2011 a report by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities stated that “most recently, cutting-edge studies in neuroscience have been further developing our understanding of how arts strategies support crucial brain development in learning.”* At Carrollton we provide a diverse range of opportunities for every student, starting with the little ones all the way to the Seniors, to explore and advance their artistic potential. Many alumnae have made the arts their live’s work. Below is an interview with Vanessa Garcia ’97 whose recent professional accomplishments highlight the varied interests Carrollton’s commitment in the arts can generate. Carrollton: How do the arts contribute to your formation as a Sacred Heart woman? VG: The arts for me are an integral part of who we are as people living, working, and absorbing the world — both taking it in, and giving back to it. As artists, we record and illuminate all that surrounds us at any given moment in time. This is not so far from the goals of the Sacred Heart. Art is both an act of intellect and generosity; of personal growth and human connection. Carrollton: Why are the arts essential in the education of young people? VG: Not too long ago I began a program called House of Art. This program connects the arts to homeless teens. What I’ve seen through this program is the strength of creativity — creativity gives us agency, as people, particularly when you feel that you have no power. Because it is, at its very core, an act of introspection that results in creation, it is full of power. Art gives young people the ability to think critically and filter information while, at the same time, crafting 34 ❧ Celebrate 2015 Commemorative Program Photo by Mayleen Gonzalez/Photo Boutique Alumnae make the arts their lives’ work those thoughts and re-forming them, re-creating the world — changing it in the end. What can be more powerful than that! Carrollton: How have the arts enhanced your life, especially as an adult? VG: I am a professional artist — as an adult, I’ve always been. Art has always driven me. For me it is a crucial form of connection and communication. It is the way in which I have been able to express myself and connect with others, whether that is through language, live performance, or visual art. Carrollton: What is your latest project or what are you working on currently? VG: I have several projects. I have just had a world premiere of a play called The Cuban Spring at New Theater in the Fall of 2014. The idea is to have that play reach a broad audience across the country and the world. I am also working on a new play called Grace, Sponsored by Monteverde. This play, in essence, is about women in the 21st century — another topic I write about quite a bit. Further, I am also working on a book of nonfiction called Our Cuban Routes about ABC’s and their relationship to Cuba. ABCs are American Born Cubans. Lastly, my novel, White Light, will be published in Fall/Winter of 2015 by Shade Mountain Press. I’m thrilled and excited about this — about all of these projects. Carrollton: Which project or piece are you most proud of and why? VG: That’s a hard question to answer. I wouldn’t engage in any of the work I do if I didn’t think every piece was important. Also, I get obsessed with the project I’m working on while I’m working on it. The project in process is always the most important...Once it goes out into the world, there’s a great sense of peace and relief, but the actual artistic work on that project is complete and you’re already thinking of the next project. Carrollton: What advice would you give to Carrollton’s aspiring artists? VG: Keep working. Being an artist is hard. It’s hard because you don’t get paid at first; it’s financially difficult in the beginning, to “make it.” But it is an act of passion. If you don’t have that initial passion, don’t do it — because it is this passion that sustains you through the hard days. Carrollton: What influenced you to follow this career path? VG: My grandfather — who taught me Shakespeare at the age of six, alongside Picasso and van Gogh. My grandmother, who let me paint her portrait as a kid, over and over again. My mother, who gave me the freedom to be who I am — always. She always said: “You can do anything; do what you love.” My English teacher, Mrs. Bell at Carrollton, who taught me the power of words, their beauty, their complexity — the magic you could work with them. *National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, “Re-Investing in Arts Education: Winning America’s Future Through Creative Schools.” The President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities “The Sacred Heart inspires women to be independent, thoughtful individuals who contribute to our communities. Her critically acclaimed documentary “Monica & David” marked her directorial and producing debut. Through her work behind the lens, she is able to convey St. Madeleine Sophie Barat’s vision demonstrating active concern for the dignity of others. The film was awarded the Jury Award for Best Documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York and Ali was named one of the “10 Filmmakers to Watch in 2009”. Our Master Plan was first conceived in the Fall of 1998 during a charette. This gathering of experts to address a challenge brought together three architectural firms, Jorge Hernandez, the Trelles, and Caruncho, Martinez and Alvarez as well as members of our community. We began the process with a prayer to the Holy Spirit. The architects visited both campuses for two days to watch the school in action. They met with different discipline teams to hear and see what our collective dreams might be. They met with students. And then they spent a weekend drawing and drafting in the Benoist Room. The result was magnificent — Carrollton’s Master Plan. We celebrated that final Sunday afternoon with a mass of Thanksgiving. All these years later, we can see that dreams become realities. All these years later, we can see that dreams become realities. Now we find ourselves at the final chapter — the Convocation Center. This final piece of the plan is essential. Not only will it provide essential community gathering space for the High School, it will give us a facility designed for performance. The actual construction of the new Convocation Center necessitates pulling down the current PAC. First named by Carrollton’s third Headmistress, Sr. Catherine Baxter, this all purpose room was called the Performing Arts Center. Its future manifestation will actually be worthy of this idea of performance. In tearing the current PAC down, we will be able to reposition the entrance to the Barry Building with a two story addition that fits into the cavity created by the removal of the PAC. The Convocation Center actually sits in the current area set off by fencing and our French classroom. In addition to the Convocation Center and new office space for Student Life and the High School Administrative offices, we will gain additional classrooms. The new façade of both, the renovated areas and the actual Convocation Center, will be in the spirit of the historic architecture of the Gate House, the Trinita and El Jardin. 42 ❧ Celebrate 2015 Commemorative Program The full treasure of El Jardin as a central historical and architectural component of South Florida will once again be viewed and enjoyed from Main Highway by the Miami community. Of course we are very excited to be so close to completing the Master Plan. We are so grateful to the Haugland Family for inspiring so many to give towards this Center dream. Now we continue to secure the necessary funding while we complete design drawings. Because the Convocation Center is part of our Master Plan, the permitting process for the building is a simpler process from that of the Wellness Center. When we first dreamt of the Convocation Center, we called it the Cor Unum Center. The name echoes St. Madeleine Sophie Barat’s motto for the Society of the Sacred Heart — One Heart and One Mind in Christ Jesus. The first phase of the Master Plan fundraising was called Imagine Carrollton’s Tomorrow. Let our hearts and minds be united now in imagining this Convocation Center as a symbol of Carrollton as the Community of Christ’s Heart in Miami.
