The GENTEX Patient Isolation Unit (PIU ) is a government approved, fully
qualified, and production-ready defense item. This system was recently DT/
OT qualified by the USAF Material Command, Brooks City Base. The PIU is an
isolation unit for individual patient protection, controlled containment, and easy
treatment access for air/land transport of biologically contaminated personnel.
The PIU is especially designed for use during biological incidents in civilian,
commercial or military environments. The standard features of the PIU provide
the patient and first responder/caregiver protection from contamination or
cross-contamination at, during or after removal from an incident site or emergency
scene. Once set up for use, the PIU maintains its maximum level of protection
for seven (7) days continuous prior to being exposed to a contaminated
environment, and twenty-four (24) hours protection after contamination. The
versatility and permeability of the PIU offers a comfortable environment for the
treatment and transport of the biologically contaminated patient. The rugged
exoskeleton serves as an ideal shelter from inclement weather, helicopter
downdraft and disaster area environments.

The PIU is also Food & Drug Administration (FDA) cleared - the FDA clearance
number is K080117 - with indications for use as follows.
Indications for Use:
The GENTEX Patient Isolation Unit (PIU ) is a temporary, single-use,
portable structure that is designed to fully contain and transport a
patient and prevent particulate cross-contamination between the
patient, the external environment and the caregivers. The PIU is

designed to enable medical care-giving to the patient via integrated
medical bulkheads interfaced with end-user supplied medical products
and equipment. The PIU is intended to be used as a means to temporarily
isolate a contaminated patient, outside or within patient care facilities.
The PIU can also be used to transport those patients within vehicles,
including aircraft, via a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO-type)
or similar litter/gurney.

The PIU is engineered to comfortably accommodate and successfully restrain
individuals ranging from the 5th percentile female to the 95th percentile male
personnel. The PIU base includes an absorption pad to collect bodily fluids and
full 9G qualified patient restraint system. In addition, the patient restraint
system is adjustable and color-coded for the patient’s chest, arms, and legs. The
restraining straps are meant to secure patients during transport and in those
clinical situations where arm and leg restraints are desired or required. The PIU
has three medical interface bulkheads that allow the transfer of sterile fluids,
critical gases and connection to external monitoring equipment to a patient within
the PIU . The unit incorporates a nominal 6-CFM blower that ventilates the inside
of the unit and filters the air exiting the unit. The blower maintains a slight negative
pressure within the unit to minimize the outward passage of contaminants. The
base unit also includes quick release connection features that allow it to interface
with litter systems for easy transport, but also provides eight (8) carrying handles
if litters are not available.

Power Sources
The canopy is self-supporting, which prevents it from making direct contact with
the patient. The canopy consists of three windows that enable medical personnel
to safely monitor the patient and patient restraints. With in the windows are 11
glove ports with two (2) additional glove ports on the head end panel. The glove
ports provide medical personnel a safe means to access a contaminated patient
without risking exposure to harmful biological agents. Each glove port serves as a
one time equipment pass-through (13 total) feature that allows medical instruments,
medicine, food, etc. to be passed to the patient without cross contamination.
