WELCOME
Welcome to the 20th Annual Alabama Educational Technology Conference.
We are honored that you have taken time out of your busy summer to help us
celebrate our 20th anniversary and join fellow educators at Alabama’s leading
educational technology conference! I am confident that this year's conference
will be highly informative and provide you with invaluable tools and
information to enhance your knowledge of technology.
Technology in schools and classrooms is becoming more and more prevalent;
therefore, we must continue to provide educational leaders with the vital
resources needed to keep Alabama schools connected and competing in this
rapidly changing technological age. We have made tremendous strides
regarding technological advances in our public schools, thereby enabling
students to learn and communicate, even in remote sections of the state.
However, we still have more to do. In fact, as technology continues to evolve,
so must we. One of our strategies is to utilize conferences such as this one to
highlight the advantages of using technology and to provide the most up-todate training possible to facilitate its use in our classrooms.
As we continue through the 21st Century, please remain committed to
providing the highest standards of education to our students because
this is vitally important to their successful journey into the future.

AETC 2016 CONFERENCE SCHEDULE
20 Years of AETC
The Alabama Educational Technology Conference (AETC) was first held in October of 1994 at the BirminghamJefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) in Birmingham. You may be saying…“1994-2016 is 22 years”…and you
would be correct. However, we did not have a conference in 2000 and 2009.
Dr. Rex Jones and Dr. Jonnie Griffin were the first coordinators and began the conference while under the former
Division of Computer Services at the ALSDE. In 1996, the Office of Technology Initiatives (OTI) was formed and
Dr. Jones and Dr. Griffin, along with the new staff of this section, managed the
conference. They served as coordinators until 1997. The conference has continued to
be managed through the Educational Technology office (formerly OTI), with
additional volunteers from other sections throughout the department.
In 1998, Dr. Melinda Maddox took the reins and led the conference until 2001. In
2000, the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC), now known as ISTE, was scheduled to be held in
Atlanta, Georgia. We felt it would be better to encourage systems to attend the national conference instead of
trying to compete.
Ms. Kathy Lambert (then Birdnow) coordinated the conference from 2002-2004. Upon her retirement, Don
Marchant began his leadership of the conference from 2005-2008. Don’s tenure included AETC’s first virtual
conference. In 2009, after learning of serious budget constraints throughout the department and the physical
conference being cancelled, it was decided that we would hold a “virtual” conference.
In 2008, Terry Atchison joined the leadership and co-chaired the conference with Don until 2012. In 2012 the
conference moved to Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville due to scheduling conflicts at the BJCC. In 2013
the conference returned to the BJCC. Terry Atchison also began his current term as the conference coordinator.
Donna Fuller has been the meeting planner for the conference since 1998. She and Joan Greene-Fisher became
co-coordinators of the conference in 2014. Donna currently coordinates the scheduling of sessions and the
program; Joan coordinates logistics for the conference.
In 2013, the conference introduced its very own conference app, giving participants yet another way to
experience the conference. AETC is also very active in social media, with almost 1,000 followers on Twitter
(@AETC_Alabama) and over 600 likes on its
Facebook page (Alabama Educational
Technology Conference). Technology has
evolved, and the conference has followed
suit. The hands-on workshop labs and bringyour-own-laptop workshops, under the
direction of Cheri Hayes; and one-hour
concurrent sessions have all continued to
offer topics on the latest and greatest in
technology today!

“Reset the Presets”
Apps, websites, and operating systems have preset standards that most everyone clicks
past without a second thought. It takes extra effort to alter the defaults, so we end up
trusting those settings. Defaults work for most people, but sometimes unchecking the
default and customizing your computing experience opens up greater possibilities.
Tony Vincent makes the case for taking the time to uncheck the standard settings and

Conference Attire
The emphasis at this conference is on comfort.
Conference attire this year will again be casual. Tennis
shoes or flat, comfortable shoes are highly
recommended.
Evaluations
Your feedback is important to us. We want to improve
AETC every year! Complete the conference evaluation
by July 10. The evaluation can be found online at
www.alex.state.al.us/aetc, click on 2016 Conference
Evaluation in the top left corner. You will receive a link to
print your Certificate of Attendance once you click
SUBMIT.

There are two Information Booths (one located adjacent
to AETC Headquarters in the main Registration lobby,
and another is located in East Hall, 3rd Floor at the top

of the escalators and to the left. AETC staff are available
and ready to help you!

WiFi access is available throughout the convention
complex using the Network and Pass code below.
Please be a good steward of the network and limit WiFi

Lunch, Snacks, and Beverages
There are many food options available during your time
at AETC. The Concession Stands will be available in the
back of the Exhibit Hall during breakfast and lunch hours
on Wednesday. Many restaurants are now within walking
distance of the complex as well. See the Area Food
Choices on page 10.
Newcomer Session
If this is your first time to attend AETC, there will be a
special orientation session to help you navigate and get
the most from the conference. The Newcomer Session
will be Tuesday, June 7 immediately following the
Opening Session in East Hall, Ballrooms A & B. Two

Join us for the presentation of the Marbury Awards,
iChallenge Awards, and ACCESS Awards; a brief
welcome by Dr. Philip C. Cleveland, Interim State
Superintendent of Education; and the Keynote Address
by Tony Vincent. As you enter the Opening Session,
you will receive a Door Prize Ticket. A drawing will be
held and winners will be announced after the Keynote
Address.
Parking
Parking is available in the BJCC/Sheraton parking deck,
as well as street parking. See Parking Grid on page 11.
Plan Ahead
The conference program and the app have a wealth of
information to help plan your day. Read the session
descriptions first thing each morning to determine which
sessions you want to attend. If you choose a session that
is a very popular topic, make plans to be in that room
early. It is also helpful to have at least one backup
selection in the event your first choice room is full.
For things to do after AETC hours: visit the AETC
website, http://alex.state.al.us/aetc, and click on the IN app
icon. There you will be able to download the app and find
out about local events while you are at the conference.

If presenters have submitted handouts for sessions, they
can be found on the AETC website,

as in the conference app.

Professional Learning Units (PLUs) and Continuing
Education Units (CEUs)
No PLUs or CEUs will be awarded through AETC.
The conference does not enter session information into
STI-PD. If you would like to receive STI-PD credit for the
sessions you attend, your system STI-PD Manager will need
to enter the information into the system, and after the
conference your system will award credit. You will receive a
Certificate of Attendance upon completing the online
conference evaluation.

The AETC 2016 Conference App is available now through
Apple iTunes and Google Play Store.
Stay connected at AETC 2016 with our Mobile Conference App. Whether you have an iPhone, iPad, or Android, this app
will be your best friend onsite. Not only will you get the latest program updates and information, but you can search the
conference program, network with other attendees, use My Schedule, and use the interactive floor plan to navigate the
Exhibit Hall. Download the PSAV Event App. Enter the event code: AETC2016 (you will only have to do this step once).
Look for conference program changes on the App – there will be no
printed addendum.

TONY VINCENT
The only thing Tony Vincent likes better than teaching is
learning. He currently resides in Council Bluffs, Iowa, but he
used to teach fifth grade in Nebraska. Since 1998 he’s been a
pioneer in digital learning, having a classroom website before
many classrooms even had Internet access. In 2001 he had a 1:1
classroom full of Palm Pilots, and in 2005 he started one of the
first podcasts from an elementary school. Tony experienced how
empowering it was for students to be equipped with tools to
help them be productive and creative. Later he became his
school’s technology coach and helped his colleagues integrate
technology.
Today Tony Vincent works as a self-employed consultant. He has
traveled to 40 states, Canada, Australia, England, and the
Caribbean to facilitate workshops and to make presentations to
K-12 educators and students. He has authored books, produced videos, developed an iPad app,
and blogged about learning and technology. Tony believes that students learn best when they are
engaged in authentic tasks—tasks that matter to them. He has many examples to show, advice to
give, and technology to demonstrate.
Tony's latest project is the iPad app, Stick Around. It empowers students, teachers, and parents to
design, play, and share sorting and labeling puzzles.

LESLIE FISHER
Leslie Fisher’s interest in technology began while studying music at
the University of Southern California. She quickly realized the value
of utilizing computers for music mixing and thus began a personal
discovery process where technology replaced the flute and brought
her nationally celebrated talents to us today.
After graduating from USC with a Business and Marketing degree in
1989, she went to an Apple Computer Inc. subsidiary where she was in charge of the education
marketing and training program. Wanting more technical experience, Leslie left this company in
1992 and joined Apple Computer Inc. as a Senior Systems Engineer in K-12 education, providing
technology solutions to school districts across Southern California.
When the Internet took off in 1994, Leslie was one of the first Apple employees assigned to study
Internet growth and implementation. Due to her knowledge of Web design, server
implementation, and Internet Resources, she became the Internet resource in the Educational
Western Region.
In 1997 Leslie created Fisher Technologies Inc. to help educators with their technology
implementation and decision making. Fisher Technologies Inc. is now a nationwide corporation
providing Web design, consulting, training, and presentation services to school districts and
companies.

meaningful parent workshops to connect with eLearning days.
This session is designed to provide information and facilitate conversations about how to implement a parent university day that provides meaningful
parent workshops through concurrent sessions, including parent sessions regarding technology "how to" lessons. Leaders and teachers of all five schools
in our system will be in one location to work with parents to demonstrate how to use Chalkable's Parent Portal, as well as provide hands-on

In Marc Prensky’s Digital Natives Partnering for Real Learning he argues that “what ultimately counts in education (certainly from the point of view
of the person being educated) is not standardized test scores, content, or curriculum. What truly matters is each student as an individual.”
Therefore, what we as educators need to be asking ourselves is are we providing the type of learning that will support each individual (our
students) to go as far as their capabilities allow, their passions desire, and their complete selves need? In our session educators will learn how to
