Organizational Development at the
University of Louisville College of
Education and Human Development (CEHD) are hosting an information session, Monday, January
4th, 2016, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. that will feature the Ed.S., Ed.D, and Ph.D. programs in
Educational Leadership. Information about Director of Special Education and Superintendent certifications will be available as well. The session will be held at the Bullitt
County Board of Education (Frank R. Hatfield Administrative Center), 1040 Highway 44
East, Shepherdsville. KY.

Central Office Profile: New Construction
The District Construction Manager is Bret Highley and he supervises all new building
projects along with renovation and modifications to existing structures.
Projects in progress are:

Complete renovation of Maryville Elementary School. One of two open school concepts (no doors, only partitions between classes), Maryville is receiving a major
makeover which will feature enclosed classroom units, brand new cafeteria, full-size
gymnasium and new administrative offices.

Complete renovation of Mt. Washington Elementary School. The other open school
facility will also receive a new gym and cafeteria along with enclosed classrooms and
new administrative offices. Both projects are scheduled for completion by the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year.
Construction projects require a lot of documentation between Mr. Highley’s office, architects, contractors and state officials.

Students Have the Freedom to Choose

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep
streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare
wrote poetry.”
Reverend King preached these words in 1967, and they became a famous quotation of
what is truly an extraordinary sermon titled “The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life,”
the text of which you can find on the internet.
This quote and the sentences around it tells us to be the best we can be, whatever it is
that we are.
The message that I take away from the quote is that our school system must provide the
tools for all students to become the best that they can be.
Many people celebrate the $11 million in scholarships earned by the class of 2015
BCPS graduates.
Many people were happy to see a major industrial employer making a $124,000 gift for
equipment to train students in Advanced Manufacturing Technology.
Many people love to read the Dean’s and President’s lists in the Pioneer News and still
others are thrilled to see a student athlete signing on to play at the next level.
Truly, we should all be pleased with all of those things, and every other instance where
our students are able to achieve their individual dreams, whatever those dreams.
You see, we don’t concentrate too much on preparing students for college and we aren’t
focusing too much attention on providing career pathways.
We don’t provide too many extracurricular activities and we don’t concentrate too much
effort on making sure that every child can read and do math well.
The reason for this is that we don’t know which path will speak to which student, and
they don’t know either.
A student who is intellectually gifted may find his passion in creating sculptures.
A student who struggles with reading in 2nd grade may become a novelist as an adult.

It is our job to try to provide exposure to as much as we can so our
kids can make the choices that will
allow them to live a satisfied life.
Bullitt County Public Schools exists to make sure that students graduate able to take advantage of any opportunity that appeals to them.
Though our graduation and College & Career Readiness rates (around 87 percent each)
are higher than they have ever been, it remains a fact that too many do not meet that
standard.
Frankly, this is most often not the failure of the school, but the failure of a government
that has declined to provide proper incentives for hard work and responsible behavior to
all the adults who send their children to our schools.
Still, none of us chooses our parents. Our teachers, principals, and counselors can and
do change lives and family trees through school-wide and individual programs to teach
productive habits and skills, as well as rigorous academic content.
Dr. King was saying that there is dignity in any work that uplifts humanity.
While we want our students to take advantage of opportunities that far exceed sweeping
the streets, we must
respect
individual
choice and do all we
can to instill in our
students
the
work
ethic that say any job
worth doing is worth
doing well.

Bernheim Forest is Beautiful during Christmas
Holiday Open House Saturday, Dec. 5 from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at the Visitor Center
ECO Kids Discovery Day: Nature Ornament Making Saturday, Dec. 5. This is a free
event with a $5 per vehicle environmental impact fee. Transform nuts, seedpods, pine
cones and other nature treasures into holiday ornaments through today’s On Your Own
Challenge from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Visitor Center. During the afternoon, have fun
exploring hands-on Discovery Stations from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and the Hike of the Day at
2:00 p.m.
Smart Gardens and Landscapes: Holiday Wreath Making Saturday, Dec. 5 from
10:00 a.m.-noon at the Research Center. The fee is $40 for members; $50 for nonmembers. Decorating for the holidays can be fun, easy and inexpensive when you use
found objects in nature. Learn how to use the bounty of the season to create wreaths,
swags, kissing balls, and more. All materials will be collected from Bernheim and supplies and tools will be provided.
Pollywog Play Parties: Pollywogs Keeping Cozy Saturday, Dec. 5 from 10:30 a.m.noon at the Education Center. The fee is $10 for Bernheim members; $15 for nonmembers. Brrr! How do people and animals keep warm during the cold? Pollywogs explore winter survival strategies by comparing fur and feathers, snoozing in the hibernation cave, making bird feeders and much more.
Free Play Day Saturday, Dec. 12 from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. in the Children’s Play Garden. This is a free event with a $5 per vehicle environmental impact fee.
Seasonal Star Stories and Sky Watch: See the Geminid Meteor Shower Saturday,
Dec. 12 from 6:00 p.m.-midnight at the Garden Pavilion. The fee is $10 for members;
$12 for non-members.
ECO Kids Discovery Day: Hot Chocolate Hike Saturday, Dec. 19. Celebrate the start
of winter with a hot chocolate treat! Earn a free cup by completing the Own Your Own
Challenge and then turning in your worksheet at Isaac’s Café. During the afternoon,
have fun exploring hands on Discovery Stations and the guided Hike of the Day.
