An Exceptional Year
Dear Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation Supporter,
2014-15 was an incredible year for the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation and our school district. It marked the first time that outstanding, equitable
programs, funded by annual donations to SMMEF, were delivered districtwide.
Every school received an enrichment grant to fund programs specific to their campus and curriculum – from science and technology to student health and wellness. At
each elementary school in the district, students benefited from 30 weeks of comprehensive arts instruction and well-trained instructional assistants in the classroom.
Also, thanks to you, our community raised $2,365,721 during our 2014-15 campaign to fund outstanding programs in our schools! In just our second year of districtwide fundraising, we are thrilled that 2,790 donors contributed to ensure equitable educational opportunities for each student in our district. By working together, our
community provides every child, in each school in our district, the well-rounded experiences needed to be prepared for their dynamic futures.
SMMEF works with a varied range of donors to build sustainable, diversified support for our students. In 2014-15, 41% of funds raised came from SMMUSD families,
26% from community members, 8% from corporations and businesses, 12% from foundations and organizations, and 13% from events, investment income and other
sources.
In addition to the programs funded by these annual donations, SMMEF is proud to support additional arts and enrichment programs for thousands of students through
the interest earned from our endowments. Valued at over $7.4 million, these endowments provide continued, secure funding for students.
On behalf of SMMUSD’s 11,257 students, thank you to all the SMMEF donors, Superintendent’s Circle members, Corporate Partners, PTA leaders and volunteers who
contributed their resources, time and talent to make our local public schools strong.

Examples of Your Donations at Work
Reading Partners at John Muir Elementary
Reading Partners is a nationally
known organization that
provides trained volunteers to
read with students in grades
K through 4. Reading Partners
transforms a space at school
into a designated “Reading
Center,” places an AmeriCorps
member on site to coordinate
the program, and recruits a corps of 40 to 100 volunteers. Volunteers work oneon-one with selected students twice a week in 45-minute tutoring sessions.
Reading Partners uses a research-based curriculum to foster students’ early
literacy and reading comprehension skills. And the program gets results! In a
2014 report, the program was found to effectively increase students’ literacy
skills. At Muir, Erin Croix, the program’s site coordinator, noted that students are

meeting or surpassing their end-of-year reading goals. “I’m pleasantly surprised
to see our students moving ahead so quickly!”
Erin has recruited a number of volunteers from the Muir neighborhood. Some
are retired teachers. Others are students at Santa Monica College, or even
high school students who tutor after school hours as part of a service learning
project. On a recent visit to Muir’s Reading Center, Rose Cheng, a Reading
Partners program manager for several Los Angeles area schools, stopped by
and filled in as a tutor. As her tutee read aloud with expression and ease, Rose
used a stopwatch to time her for fluency. “Wow,” she exclaimed, “you got all
the way to page eight and the end of the book in only 38 seconds. Great job! Do
you want to see if you can beat your own record? Ready, set, go!”
All of the books, games and materials that are part of the Reading Partners
curriculum are funded by SMMEF. They reinforce the rigorous California
standards for English Language Arts that are being taught in the classroom.
STEAM at Grant Elementary
Your donations to the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation go to support amazing programs, like STEAM
– Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math! With SMMEF donors’ generous support, Grant now has two
STEAM specialist teachers who provide integrated lessons based on the new Next Generation Science Standards in
each classroom.
During a recent lesson, STEAM teacher Alana Rattan greeted Virginia Ripley’s third grade students with an
enthusiastic, “Hello, engineers!” While sharing photos of bridges, Ms. Rattan reminded students that engineers
solve problems – like getting cars and trucks across a river – and that their solutions make life easier for everyone.
Then, students tried their own hand at building bridges. Students hypothesized about which shapes would produce
the strongest bridge. They began with two-dimensional shapes and then moved into making and connecting threedimensional figures to build their bridges, testing and redesigning as they went.
Restorative Justice at Santa Monica High School
Samohi has been using
its SMMEF stretch grant
to more deeply implement
the Restorative Justice
(RJ) program. This holistic
disciplinary approach fosters
more positive and supportive
relationships amongst students
and staff, with the ultimate
goal being to create a school with racial harmony where people from all
ethnicities feel heard, cared for, valued and safe. While teachers and staff have
received training in the program, having students trained to become mentors
and trainers for their peers is equally important. As part of the program, almost
100 Samohi students spent two weekends at “Building Bridges Camp” in the
San Bernardino Mountains, where they learned about effective communication
skills, the impact of social identities, and personal responsibility and leadership.
This camp was designed to give high school students of diverse groups the
opportunity to engage in challenging activities and courageous dialogue to
explore racism and issues related to race, ethnicity, and culture in both their
schools and their neighborhoods. Students received training in team building,
conflict resolution, effective communication, discrimination reduction and
building self-esteem, and gained awareness and tolerance of people from other
cultures. One of the students who attended the camp reflected: “I really enjoyed
the camp because it opened my eyes to the effects of racism. I learned many
great things about other races. The three days at the camp made a great impact
on my life. I now know that I have certain feelings that I want to change!”
Samohi has plans to continue sending more Samohi students to at least two
camps every school year.

Fun in the Sun - Pier Party Raised Over $128,000!
On Sunday, April 26, 2015, 1,500 Santa Monica and Malibu community
members partied at Pacific Park on the historic Santa Monica Pier in support of
SMMEF.
Pier Party activities included Pacific Park rides and games, a live DJ, animals
from the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, Santa Monica Police officers, interactive
games by Marbles: The Brain Store, a mime and magician, arts and crafts run
by P.S. ARTS, and drawing machines. TREATS Frozen Yogurt & Dessert Bar sold
yogurt and sorbet to attendees, with 100% of proceeds going to SMMEF, and
Brad Simpson and Stacy White of Partner’s Trust provided give-aways and ran a
raffle for attendees
Community leaders joined the fun! State Senator Ben Allen, Superintendent
Sandra Lyon, Santa Monica Mayor Kevin McKeown, Mayor Pro Tempore Tony
Vazquez, City Councilmember Ted Winterer, and SMMUSD School Board
members Laurie Lieberman, Craig Foster, Maria Leon-Vazquez, and Ralph
Mechur enjoyed the event.“This was a beautiful community event,” shared
Kathleen Rawson, President of the SMMEF Board of Directors and CEO of Downtown Santa Monica.” With 35 corporate sponsors, over 100 volunteers, 8 restaurants
donating food for the VIP event, and over 1,500 community members enjoying fun in the sun on the Pier, Pier Party is the perfect example of our community coming
together to support our students.”

Our Endowments
Thanks to generous donors, SMMEF has four endowments:
The For Academics Endowment, established in 1998, was valued at $1,615,738 as of June 30, 2015. The interest income of $67,000 was contributed to SMMEF’s
annual campaign.
The For The Arts Endowment, created in 2003, was valued at $2,893,971 as of June 30, 2015. $120,839 was used to fund arts programs at middle and high schools.
The Peggy Bergmann Arts Endowment Fund, In Memory of Lenore Bergmann and John Elmer Bergmann, was created in February 2013 and was valued at $2,912,018
as of June 30, 2015. Income from this endowment pays for instruments and semi-private music lessons for socio-economically disadvantaged students district-wide.
SMMEF continues to build its For Athletics Endowment and invites those interested in supporting athletics to contact SMMEF for more information.
Our endowments provide an ongoing and reliable source of funding that ensures consistent programming across the district. Growth of the endowments through
donations and investment gains ensures SMMEF can provide students with outstanding programs. When you contribute to an endowment, you create a legacy of
support for our students and schools.
