This document maps all current City-owned public art pieces, as well as the locations of artworks currently on-loan. Consultation with the PAC and City of Durango provided basis for potential locations for new public art, whereby providing direction to the PAC when budgeting for future projects. Coordination with the City’s overall improvement projects will be critical. Many of the public art locations are proposed in City parks, trailheads and along the Animas River Trail. Final placement of the artwork will be coordinated in advance with the Parks and Recreation Department upon acceptance of the proposed art by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. The future art locations will continue to develop as the City evolves. It employs the “canvas” of interpretive signage as a user-activated mechanism of engagement. This insertion of the past into everyday life enables viewers to make an immediate, realtime comparison, which in turn allows the weight of years falling between the frozen moment of the photograph and the present instant to be keenly felt...a gentle bump against the most powerful of nature’s forces—time. The project’s goals also include offering Durangoans insights into their history. Highlighting past relationships with the land and it’s people—how communities were born and died, how resources were utilized wisely or foolishly; how important buildings and sites have been preserved or destroyed—raises questions about growth. My hope is that such queries will positively inform decision-making about Durango’s future. "The Guardian," which resides at the entrance of Memorial Park, is a 12-foot high core ten steel sculpture. 2009 Donated Artist Bronze "My Children" is an example of Houser's interest in the maternal theme, one he continued to explore throughout his creative life. Allan Houser received many honors during his illustrious 55-year career as an artist and teacher. Celebrating his Native American heritage, he created over 1,000 sculptures in various media and displayed his work in over 50 solo exhibitions. Houser's art is held in private and public collections worldwide. In 1992, he was the first Native American to receive the National Medal for the Arts. Houser died in 1994. 2011 Donated Phyllis Alden Carl Stransky Mixed media "Turbo Books" is inspired by a spiral galaxy, both in form and concept. The spiral symbolizes the opening of the mind that is experienced through reading. Acutal books make up the arms of the galaxy form. Carl Stransky is a self-taught sculptor living in Durango, Colorado. His interest in science and the natural world inspires him to create sculptures of animals and physical phenomenon. 2008 2008 Purchased Jay Dougan Mixed media "Card Catalog" pays homage to libraries, past and present. While referencing the card catalog as an organizer of information, the placement of the 'drawers' in the stairwell organizes space. This piece is entwined with the building, physically and conceptually. Jay Dougan received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Notre Dame University. He has created numerous temporary outdoor installations. Dougan is currently an assistant professor of art at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. 2008 2008 Purchased Title Artist(s) Memorial Park The Guardian A2 Durango Public Library A3 A4 Public Art (City Owned) A1 Medium Description/Provenance Mick Reber Steel My Children Allan Houser Durango Public Library Turbo Books Durango Public Library Card Catalog City of Durango Public Art Locations | May 2015 Date of Artwork Public Art (City-Owned) Cont. Envisioned as protectors of words and ideas, their highly-polished surfaces are impressed with fragments of text and embellishments from old books. Melissa Zink trained at numerous art schools before beginning her prolific and well-received career. Over the last 35 years, she has worked in various media, yet her subject has remained rooted in storytelling and a love of language. Her paintings, collages, and sculptures are widely shown and collected. In 2001, she received the New Mexico Governor's Award for Excellence and Achievement in the Arts. Zink resides in Taos, New Mexico. 2008 Donated Zink Family "Life Wall" is comprised of 40 bronze sculptures of people who have made significant contributions to American society as well as those whose faces reveal a great depth of character and human dignity. Portraying the flow of life and diversity of mankind, "Life Wall" is an interactive sculpture to be experienced and enjoyed by the sighted as well as the visually impaired. Each "life cast" sculpture was created using a mold taken directly from the person's body. The molds were then filled with molten bronze to produce the final sculpture. Created during the 1980s, "Life Wall" toured American museums from 1990 to 2000. 2003 Donated Phyllis Alden 2008 Purchased Medium Description/Provenance Bronze Willa Shalit and Bronze Dean Ericson Rachel Slick 20 Mixed media "The Reading Tree" takes the form of a whimsical aspen tree whose open trunk provides the story-teller a place to sit. Its cheerful design is, in the artist’s own words, “attention-getting, though not so filled with a story of its own it detracts from what is being read by the sitter.” Bright colorful leaves and birds are fastened at a height children may see, but not reach. The birds are all Durango natives - a barn swallow, a downy woodpecker, an American goldfinch and a redwing blackbird. Rachel Slick studied art in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and has won numerous public art commissions in the U.S. She was the recipient of a Robert Rauschenberg Grant in 2003 and was a featured artist on PBS Arts TV in 2004. Slick resides in Tucson, Arizona. City of Durango Public Art Locations | May 2015 Date of Artwork 2008 21 Public Art (City-Owned) Cont. Image Code Location A8 Demonstration Garden A9 Florida Road Roundabout A10 Rotary Park Title Reach Artist(s) Medium Miki Harder and Steel Rich Stewart Date of Artwork Date Acquired Donated or Purchased "Reach" is a sculpture that honors nature lover and humanitarian Tom Grams, a local dentist who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010 while he was there to provide dental care in a remote mountain valley. A creation of Miki Harder and Rich Stewart, the sculpture features birds flying toward the sky, and the vertical steel pieces spiral up, representing a prayer wheel, mountains, canyons, and rivers. The piece was donated to the City by friends and family of Dr. Gram and sits in the Durango Botanical Society's demonstration garden along the Animas River Trail. 2012 2012 Donated Friends of Tom Grams Description/Provenance Donor Endurance Joshua Wiener Steel Durango maintains a strong recreational culture, home to thousands of amateur and professional cyclists, which made it a perfect host as the starting point to the 2012 USA Pro Cycling Challenge. In celebration of the event, the Bank of Colorado donated the funding to commission a sculpture to reside within the Florida Road roundabout, resulting in Joshua Wiener’s spirited piece, "Endurance." Wiener, a former Durango resident, created a piece that is kinetic, without moving parts and captures image of five racing cyclists nearing a finish line. Joshua was born into a stone sculpting community, as his mother founded the Marble Institute of Colorado. He also studied at Fort Lewis College, and his dedication to sculpting earned him an apprenticeship in Japan with Kazutaka Uchida. Joshua is an instructor at the Art Students League in Denver, Colorado and has taught workshops at the Denver Art Museum and The Colorado Academy. 2012 2012 Donated Sponsored by Bank of Colorado Swirl Tom Waldron Steel As Durango’s public art portfolio grew in size and value, so too did the appreciation of the City’s stewardship of the collection. In late 2012, recently-settled Durango residents Ken and Shell MacKenzie bequeathed Tom Waldron’s modernist weldedsheet steel sculpture "Swirl" to the City. Installed overlooking the Animas River next to the walking bridge in Rotary Park, "Swirl" holds an elegant curvature and minimalist design that passerbys often mistaken for something organic, like a boulder. Waldron is an established sculptor based in Corrales, New Mexico, and although Swirl was created in 1989 it speaks to the same abstract design of his main body of work—monumental, oddly understated and amorphous in structure. All that would be expected of a modern sculpture and a welcomed addition to the City’s collection. 1989 2012 Donated Ken & Shell MacKenzie City of Durango Public Art Locations | May 2015 Public Art (City-Owned) Cont. The Arts Collaborative is comprised of five artisans: Keith Walzak, Kelly Hurford, Mary Anne Griffin, Sandy Bielenberg and Chris Loftus, who worked with the youth to fabricate and assemble an ambitious 70-foot long by 10-foot tall steel and mosaic tile mural. The steel trout frames were made entirely from reclaimed steel, and the piece serves to celebrate the Animas River and the trout native to many waterways of this region. Davis recalls of her inspiration for the largerthan-life sculpture of a German shepherd eagerly poised atop would-be steel girders: “I was listening to a piece on NPR shortly after 9/11 about how we employ animals, and I was impressed by how many dogs were at the towers,” Davis said of her inspiration. “I immediately wanted to do a tribute sculpture – not a sad thing, not a political piece; a tribute. “I’ve been making sculpture for my whole life, and I’ve never made a piece that moved so many people,” she said. In 2005, prior to finding a home in Durango’s permanent collection, Semper Fi was part of a 10-museum touring exhibit called “Paws & Reflect: The Art of Canines” and later was on-loan to a New Jersey based foundation. Davis sculpts almost entirely from live models, and is an avid lover of dogs herself, having raised many breeds and spending countless hours studying both their anatomy and behavior. The delicate columns of shattered glass catch glimmers of sunlight in its position of the lobby of City Hall, creating a subtle but beautiful reminder to a poignant moment in U.S. history. Greenblatt is known in the community for another important public art effort, the Dumpster Beatification Project, which has reimagined over 30 metal refuse bins around the city. Aided by the help of at-risk youth, the Dumpster Project serves to mentor the next generation of public artists, all the while creating visually appealing treasures from the everyday trash units. A15 City Hall Past, Present & Future Brian Saren Steel The year 2007 marked the 125th year of the City of Durango, and to commemorate the commissioned a public artwork by local artist Bryan Saren. The steel and copper sculpture contains 125 different pieces, one for every year the City has been incorporated. The piece bears steel likenesses of Perins Peak and Smelter Mountain framed by copper sections of river. A large, spoked wheel sits above and below the mountains and river. Saran was selected from a juried Call to Artists, presenting a final concept to a panel of community members, and the Public Art Commission. To help fund the project, the City sold commemorative 125th anniversary mason jars. Local microbreweries Steamworks, Carver’s and Ska Brewing Co. all helped sell the mason jars and brewed the special Founders’ Lager to fill them. The sculpture is located at the entrance of the Durango City Hall on East 2nd Avenue. A16 Schneider Park Celebrate! J. Anderson, an architect, artist and former member of the City’s Public Art Commission, installed "Celebrate!" under the terms of a one-year loan and Durango later raised $20,000 to purchase the 22-foot-tall steel tree for the permanent collection. A longtime Durango resident, Anderson’s artwork is held in corporate, private and public collections around the country. Appropriately situated adjacent to the Durango Arts Center, Puck is often adorned with scarves, hats, leg warmers and other props throughout the year by anonymous admirers. The sculpture stands on a rotating base, enabling passersby to engage the mischievous character in movement, twisting him to face different directions. The life-like nature of the sculpture was another piece that was donated by part-time resident and art patron, Phyllis Alden in 2011 after eleven years on loan to the city of Durango. Crafted in 1984 by MacQueen, Puck migrated to Durango in February 2000 at Alden's behest. 1984 2011 Donated Phyllis Alden "Living Wind," conceived and created by artist Jennifer Cannon, is a donation on behalf of longtime Durango residents, Walt and Jenny Dear. The piece was a welcomed addition to the lobby of the City's Intermodal Transit Center after careful consideration of the most suitable artwork for the facility since it opened in 2009. "Living Wind" was installed and dedicated in summer of 2014 as the 27th artwork of the City's collection. Cannon's steel design is intended to give the viewer a sense of climbing upward towards an adventurous destination, evoking a sense of movement akin to the purpose of the Transit Center. 2014 2014 Donated Walter and Jennie Dear Medium Description/Provenance Bronze Jennifer Cannon Aluminum 4' diameter concrete base City of Durango Public Art Locations | May 2015 Donor 25 Public Art (City-Owned) Cont. A former ballet teacher and dancer, MacQueen began working as a full-time sculptor in 1970 and chose models from the community of dance in each of the eight countries in which she resided, including Paris, France and Pietrasanta, Italy. She gained expertise in the technical aspects of producing cast bronze sculpture, modeling several internationally-known dancers. The 900 lb "Mudra" was first executed in Brussels in 1984 while working with the Ballet du XXieme Siecle, modeling the figure after internationally-renowned Argentinian ballet performer, Jorge Donn, who was posed in mid-leap. Durango is fortunate to hold MacQueen's two signature pieces, "Puck" and "Mudra" within its collection. Joyce Parkerson Bronze Situated in one of Durango's most frequented destinations--Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Train Depot--"Whinney and Friends" is beloved by tourists and locals alike. A life-size bronze trio of ponies by former Durango resident, Joyce Parkerson (1947-2002), "Whinney and Friends" was created in 1992. The sculpture was officially donated to the city in 2011 after being on loan for several years due to the generosity of part-time resident and enthusiastic art patron, Phyllis Alden. Parkerson was an established sculptor who began winning art awards at age 11 and later attended the American Academy of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago to hone her craft, ultimately specializing in animals and primarily equine portraits. Like many of her works, "Whinney and Friends" invites human interaction on a daily basis as children often climb atop the ponies after a day on the train. All this would probably be just fine with Parkerson. "To me," she once remarked, "sculpture is made to be touched." Perhaps the most controversial and publically revered piece in the City's art collection in recent past, the "Arc of History", by artist Tom Holmes, is the result of a capital project commissioned in conjunction with the redesign of a major traffic intersection of US highways 160 & 550. Chosen from a competitive, formal Call to Artists that brought forth dozens of proposals from local and national contenders, the piece initially generated significant public discourse upon installation in 2014 with multiple newspaper articles and even a consideration by National Public Radio. The piece gained further attention when an anonymous artist crafted and placed a dinosaur head at one end of the rock-based construction, playing into the various public interpretations of what the piece represented. The dinosaur head was later auctioned off for arts education programs, and today the "Arc" continues to receive occasional decorations. The sculpture celebrates Durango's history of mining. Two men constituted a Double-Jack team: one turned the steel [bit] while the other pounded it. The holes they drilled were filled with blasting powder and fired to break up the rock. They used a set of steel bits, each piece progressively longer and narrower, and an eight pound hammer for this wearying work. Eventually replaced by machine drills, the skilled Double-Jackers took their trade to timed drilling contests, where they competed for coveted championships. Double-Jack is located in Santa Rita Park and is dedicated in memory of Boris Uskert, whose life was lost in an airplane accident on January 19, 1988 while enroute to Durango to participate in the design of this monument. Clyde Doney settled in Durango with his wife Margaret Pauline Doney (1951-2014) in 1970 and established a family business, Doney Sculpture Studio and Foundry, which they operated for 30 years. 1998 Purchased Medium Description/Provenance Bronze Date of Artwork Donor A23 Santa Rita Park Double Jack Clyde Doney A24 Santa Rita Park Parade Formation Mick Reber Steel Installed in August 2003, "Parade Formation" is a 30-by-10-foot steel sculpture by former Fort Lewis College (FLC) art professor Mick Reber. The sculpture was a generous donation to the city of Durango on behalf of Reber, whose career at FLC spanned 30 years. "Parade Formation" is a two- and three-dimensional abstract depicting three horse riders meant to blend old west and contemporary western images. The artist's remarks on the concept and creative progression: “A couple of years ago I began a series of drawings dealing with imagery relating to the horse and rider. As the drawings progressed, the idea of ceremony began to take over, with horse and rider in a kind of parade formation,” he said. “My purpose soon became a search to secure a series of stylized drawings which would capture the spirit of that feeling in sculptural form. I was far more interested in a spiritual connection of past and present than a literal one, evoking a kind of symbolic sense of honor to the way horse and rider have been used in ceremonies throughout the history of Durango as well as other areas of the world.” (Excerpt from Durango Telegraph, Missy Votel. August 28, 2003). 2003 Donated Friends of the Artist A25 Santa Rita Park Cycle of Renewal Ken Queen Steel This kinetic sculpture, placed in the Rose Garden at Santa Rita Park, was donated by the Garden Club of Durango. Designed with acoustic precision and perfect tone by a Grammy Award winning musician, the instruments are built to maintain pure and soothing sounds through years of rigorous play and exposure to the elements of nature. The sculptural elegance and flowing lines of the pieces lend themselves to the public art collection’s diversity, and they are truly interactive as percussion instruments that invite children and adults alike to play and enjoy, creating a full sensory experience. A27 Three Springs Interdependence Police Substation Preston Parrott Steel Part of the City's commitment to funding art at public buildings, "Interdependence" was designed specifically for this location as a community marker, a navigational point within the Three Springs community, and a symbolic reminder of the community's interdependence with our pubilc services. The piece is composed of four curved sides made of patinated steel. The core of the piece is made of copperplated perforated metal - allowing one to see through the center, as well as allowing air flow. The piece resembles a flame in its outer structure, reminding one of an "eternal flame" - the constant support the police department provides. A former Durango resident, Preston Parrott is a primarily self-taught metal sculpture who currently lives in Texas.
