400 Years Under 8 Flags
Amelia Island is Florida’s Golden Isle which
the French visited, the Spanish developed,
the English named and the Americans tamed.
It is the only U.S. location to have been under
eight different flags.
French 1562-1565: The island’s first
recorded European visitor was France’s Jean
Ribault on May 3, 1562. He named the
island "Isle de Mai." Two years later, Rene de
Laudonniere founded Fort Caroline nearby.
Spanish 1565-1763: The Spanish, under
Pedro Menendez, defeated the French and
founded St. Augustine in 1565. During their
long dominion, the Spanish concentrated on
educating and converting the natives, and
the island name of "Santa Maria" was derived
from a mission here. The mission and settlement were destroyed in 1702 by the English.
Oglethorpe renamed the island "Amelia" after
the daughter of George II.
English 1763-1783: The island became
known as "Egmont" from the Earl of Egmont’s
large indigo plantation. Revolutionary forces
invaded in 1777 and 1778.
Spanish 1783-1821 (with 3 interruptions):
After the Revolution, Britain ceded Florida
back to Spain. Jefferson’s Embargo Act of
1807, which closed U.S. ports to foreign shipping, made the border town of Fernandina a
center of smuggling and piracy.
Patriots - With secret U.S. blessings, the
so-called "Patriots of Amelia Island" overthrew the Spanish and hoisted their own flag
on March 17, 1812. They replaced it with the
U.S. flag the next day, but Spain demanded
return of the island. The Spanish completed
Fort San Carlos in 1816.
Green Cross of Florida - To liberate
Florida from Spanish control, Sir Gregor
MacGregor seized Fort San Carlos in June,
1817, and hoisted his Green Cross standard.
After his withdrawal, the Spanish attempted
6
Amelia Now Summer 2011
to regain control but were repelled by forces
led by Jared Irwin and Ruggles Hubbard.
Mexican Rebel Flag - Irwin and Hubbard
were joined by the pirate Luis Aury, who
gained control and raised the Mexican rebel
flag. U.S. troops occupied the island in
December, 1817, and held it "in trust for
Spain."
United States 1821 - present (with one
interruption): Spain ceded Florida to the
United States in 1821. Work began on Fort
Clinch in 1847. In the 1850s, Fernandina
moved from Old Town to become the terminus for Florida’s first cross-state railroad.
Organized by Senator David Yulee, the railroad ran from Fernandina to Cedar Key.
Confederate - The Confederates took
over Fort Clinch in April, 1861, but federal
troops regained it in March, 1862, and occupied it for the duration of the Civil War.
The
Golden
Years
1875-1900:
Fernandina's Historic District retains the
evidence of the town's greatest period of
prosperity. Tourists flocked here via steamers direct from New York to stay in two elegant hotels. Shipping boomed with lumber,
phosphate and naval stores. The SpanishAmerican War fostered gunrunning from the
local port, and troops again occupied Fort
Clinch. After the turn of the century, tourism
surged southward.
1900-present: Early in the 20th century, the modern shrimping industry was
founded here, pioneered by Mike Salvador,
Salvatore Versaggi and Antonio Poli. Shrimp,
oyster and crab canneries prospered until
the Depression. The 30s brought two pulp
mills, Container Corporation of America (now
Smurfit Stone) and Rayonier. In recent times,
sparked by Omni Amelia Island Plantation
and the Ritz-Carlton, the island has gained
national attention as a resort.
Music in the Air on Amelia Island
The 10th annual Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival began in May and will
continue through June 19 at a wide range
of venues throughout Amelia Island.
The festival strives to meet a wide
range of musical tastes, including traditional chamber music string quartets and
composers such as Haydn and Mozart;
chamber music ensembles, including
voice, guitar and wind instruments and
composers such as Schoenberg and Stravinsky; and more modern and non-traditional chamber music that explores ethnic
and folk traditions as well as twentieth
century composers and arrangers.
The Amelia Island Chamber Music
Festival is nationally recognized by music
lovers from all over the country. It gives
audiences of all ages a chance to experience beautiful music in a variety of settings such as the Amelia Plantation Chapel, the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church,
the Palace Saloon, historic Fort Clinch,
and the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island.
Some of the world-class musicians set
to perform in June during the 2011 festival are Julie and David Coucheron, eighth
blackbird, Luciana Souza, R. Carlos Nakai, Rachel Barton Pine, Valentina Lisitsa
and Sharon Isbin.
For a complete schedule of performances and information on ticket prices
and availability, go to www.aicmf.com or
call (904) 261-1779.
The Grammy-winning contemporary music
ensemble eighth blackbird (above) and female
jazz singer of the year Luciana Souza (below) are

Amelia's Beautiful Beaches
Amelia Island has over 13 miles of
beautiful beaches to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.
Spend a day at the beach swimming,
surfing, sailing or just relaxing. Beachcombers should be able to find many treasures, including shark teeth, sand dollars,
starfish, sea glass and a variety of shells.
In addition to the state parks at both
ends of Amelia Island, there are four primary beach access points:
Main Beach, at Atlantic and Fletcher
avenues, offers the most amenities. Rest
rooms and outdoor showers are available, along with picnic tables, a playground, Putt-Putt golf, volleyball nets,
basketball courts, a skate park and a
boardwalk. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer.
Seaside Park is located at the roundabout on South Fletcher Avenue and
Sadler Road. There are rest rooms and outdoor showers here along a boardwalk with
several covered areas. Limited parking.
Peters Point, at South Fletcher Avenue
just east of the intersection at Amelia Island Parkway, has a large paved parking
lot, covered pavilions, rest rooms and
indoor and outdoor showers. Lifeguards
are on duty during the summer.
Burney Park, at American Beach just
north of Amelia Island Plantation, also
has a large paved parking lot, rest rooms,
picnic tables and showers. Lifeguards are
on duty in the summer.
American Beach is one of the most historic beaches on the Atlantic coast. Originally established in 1935 by A. L. Lewis

DON’T MISS IT!
Depot of Florida’s first cross-state railroad

A Walking

Tour of
Photos by Charles Litrico
Fernandina moved from Old Town to
its present location to become the terminus
of Florida's first cross-state railroad, constructed 1856-61 from Fernandina to Cedar
Key. In 1973, a 30-block area was named an
Historic District in the National Register
of Historic Places because of the amazing preservation of late Victorian architecture. In 1987, the District was expanded to
include 50 blocks.
Start at the docks on Centre Street.
Just east of the docks is the Depot of
Florida's first cross-state railroad. This second depot, opened in 1899, now houses the
Amelia Island Visitor Center.
Across from the Depot is the Duryee
Building, constructed in 1882, now home
of the Marina Restaurant.
On the NW corner of Centre and 2nd is
The Palace, Florida's oldest saloon in the
same location. The 1878 building originally
housed a haberdashery; the saloon opened
in 1903.
On the SW corner of Centre and 2nd is
the Dotterer Building, built as a grocery
about 1878 and now home of Shoe Visions.
On the NE corner of Centre and 2nd is
The Chandlery, built following the 1876
fire with third floor added about 1901. The
ground floor is now home for Pineapple
Patch and French Market Antiques.
At mid-block is the Three Star Saloon,
erected in 1877, now home for Sea Breeze.
Next door is the 1885 Angel Building,

Turn right on South 3rd.
Florida House at 22 South 3rd is the
state's oldest hotel. One building was erected 1857-59, the other in 1882. It is now a
bed and breakfast inn.
At 29 South 3rd is the Murdaugh House,
built around 1919 by William Newton
Murdaugh, who also built the house just
to the north at 25 S. 3rd in 1923. The
Murdaugh House was completely renovated in 2005 and is now a restaurant called,
appropriately, 29 South.
On the NE corner of Centre and 3rd is
the Kydd Building, constructed in 1873
and now home of Southern Touch. Beside
it is the 1911 Allan Building, a former
department store converted into offices.
At Centre and 4th stands the 1880
Swann/Waas building.
On the NE corner of Centre and 4th is our
1912 Post Office. Next to it is the Lesesne
House, built in 1860 and added to the
National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The Nassau County Courthouse at
Centre at 5th was built in 1891 and is
regarded by the State as "the finest surviving Victorian courthouse in Florida."
At Centre and 7th is the Horsey House,
built about 1902.
Turn right at S. 7th for four blocks.
The Thompson House is the first of
three houses on the right built for members of the prominent Thompson family
by architect John Hedges. Built circa 1872,
it was the home of state senator William
Naylor Thompson. The Lucy Cottage was
built circa 1877 for Thompson's sister, Miss
Lucy O. Thompson.
The last of the Thompson houses, built
in 1882 for the senator's brother Pratt, was
the first brick house in the city to be used
solely as a residence. Story has it that now
it is the haunt of Fernandina's most famous
ghost and first lady of the house, Miss
Nettie Thompson.
The Tabby House at 27 S. 7th is individually cited in the National Register.
Made of crushed oyster shell and poured
Portland cement, it was designed by the
New York architect, R.S. Schuyler. It was
built in 1885 for C.W. Lewis.

far is a high in-coming tide that arrives
just after sunrise. Here, clear water conditions allow both redfish and sea trout to
easily locate your surface plug. The high
falling tide also offers excellent topwater
opportunities as baitfish begin to fall out
of flooded spartina marshes onto nearby
shallow mud flats.
Another key factor when targeting
topwater trout and reds is the availability
of baitfish. Look for schooling menhaden, mullet and glass minnows and you
will be sure to find trout and redfish
nearby. I can safely say that if you see a
lack of baitfish, you would be much better off cranking up your big motor and
exploring new waters.
Once you have located both numerous schools of baitfish and clean water,
look for ambush points where baitfish
are migrating past a marsh point, the
mouth of a feeder creek, through a deep
slough, or past the deep side of an oyster
bar. Cast your surface lure up-tide of the
ambush point, working it slowly past the
ambush point and hang on!
Sea trout will frequently come up from
under your surface lure during the strike,
while redfish will often poke their head
out of the water and come crashing down
on your surface plug. In both cases,
patience in setting the hooks of your
surface plug is critical. Many skilled topwater fishermen will actually wait until
they feel the pressure of the hooked fish
on their rod tip before setting the hooks.
Setting the hooks too soon will frequently
result in pulling the plug away from the
foraging red or trout.
Some of the more productive surface
plugs include the Storm "Chug Bug",
Heddon "Zara Spook", Bomber "BadonkA-Donk", Rapala "Skitter Walk" and the
traditional Smithwick "Devil's Horse".
The best color patterns include, gold,
white and chartreuse.
Finally, work your surface plugs slow
and with a lot of noise!
Summer surf fishing along Amelia
Island beaches include pompano, whiting, puppy drum, sea trout, redfish,
flounder, bluefish and more. Fishing on
the bottom with fresh shrimp is key. The
best tide includes the last of the incoming
and all of the falling tide.
Non-Florida residents 16 and older will
need to purchase a Florida non-resident
saltwater fishing license when fishing
from shore, piers, bridges and from a boat.
This also includes crabbing. For more fishing and charter information, call Amelia

SUMMER VEGETABLE CRêPES
FROM: www.eatingwell.com
1/3 cup reduced-fat sour cream
1/2 cup chopped fresh chives,
divided, plus more for garnish
3 TBLS. low-fat milk
2 tsps. lemon juice
3/4 tsp. salt, divided
1 TBL. extra-virgin olive oil
2 cups chopped zucchini
1-1/4 cups chopped green beans
1 cup fresh corn kernels
1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese
1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper
4 9-inch "ready-to-use" crêpes
Stir sour cream, 1/4 cup chives, milk, lemon juice and 1/4 teaspoon salt in a small bowl
until combined. Set aside.
Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add zucchini, green beans
and corn and cook, stirring, until beginning to
brown, 6 to 8 minutes. Reduce heat to low;
stir in ricotta, Monterey Jack, the remaining
1/4 cup chives, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon
salt and pepper. Cook, stirring gently, until the
cheese is melted, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove
from the heat.
To roll crêpes, place one on a piece of
parchment or wax paper (or leave it on the
piece of plastic separating the crêpes in the
package). Spoon one-fourth of the vegetablecheese mixture (about 3/4 cup) down the
center of the crêpe. Use the paper (or plastic)
to help you gently roll the crêpe around the fill-
ing. Place the crêpe seam-side down on a dinner plate. Repeat with the remaining crêpes
and filling. Serve each crêpe topped with 2
tablespoons of the reserved sauce and more
chives, if desired.
MEDITERRANEAN
CHICKEN SALAD
FROM: www.epicurious.com
6 TBLS. olive oil
2 TBLS. plus 2 tsps. tarragon vinegar
1 TBL. chopped fresh tarragon
1/2 TBL. fresh lemon juice
1/2 TBL. Dijon mustard
3 cups diced cooked chicken
1/2 cup orzo (rice-shaped pasta; about 3 oz.)
1 cup halved cherry tomatoes
1 6-oz. jar marinated artichoke hearts, drained
1/2 cup coarsely chopped, pitted
Kalamata olives
1/3 cup dried currants
1-1/2 TBLS. drained capers
Combine oil, vinegar, tarragon, lemon
juice, and mustard in small bowl; whisk to
blend. Season dressing to taste with salt and
pepper. Place chicken in medium bowl. Mix in
1/4 cup dressing.
Cook orzo in large pot of boiling salted water until just tender but still firm to bite. Drain.
Rinse under cold water to cool; drain well.
Transfer orzo to large bowl. Stir in remaining
dressing and toss to coat. Add chicken mixture, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, olives, currants, and capers. Season salad to taste with
