Pg. 19 -2- OUR PHILOS0PHY, VISION & MISSION OUR PHILOSOPHY: Notre Dame is a Catholic residential and coeducational College dedicated to the primacy of the spiritual in true Christian education. The program of the College is developed according to the teaching and the moral and liturgical practice of the Roman Catholic Church. Its aim is the growth of individuals with deeply rooted personal values, who are ready to take responsibility for their own lives and to serve the true needs of our society in Canada and the world. This aim is achieved through the College's program of studies and of religious, cultural and social activities, with a special emphasis on athletics. It is also reached through the experience of community life in the College, a life involving both cooperation and competition in the context of the prairie village of Wilcox. Founded by Father James Athol Murray under the patronage of the Notre Dame, Our Lady, the College is certainly Catholic in character, purpose and methods, but it has always been open to those of other faiths. Long before ecumenism became popular, Notre Dame was welcoming and encouraging not just Catholics, but all students to seek God, put their faith in Him and live in accordance with their beliefs. The College of today continues both Father Murray's Catholic commitment and his breadth of vision. OUR VISION: That Notre Dame, under the guidance of Almighty God, may serve, in the generations to come, the highest interests of mankind by drawing into a common fellowship the members of the faculty and the student body. That the members of Notre Dame may discover within its walls the true education that is to be found in good fellowship, in friendly disputation and debate, in the conversation of wise and prudent men and women, in music, pictures and the play, in the casual book, in sports and games and the mastery of the body and lastly, that Notre Dame may be dedicated to the task of arming youth with strength and suppleness of limb, with clarity of mind and depth of understanding and with a spirit of true religion and high endeavor. OUR MISSION: To lead our Hounds to understand that: "To him who does what in him lies, God will not deny his grace." To provide, through a nurturing yet Spartan environment, parenting modeled on the Christian family that develops each individual's spiritual, social, academic and physical being. -3- MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF REGENTS Another year has passed on the Notre Dame campus and with this year we have seen very positive and promising changes with the personnel, facilities, programs and finances. In serving my first year, it has been a privilege and a blessing to work with an extremely dedicated Board of Regents who provides a diverse and strong foundation to assist in the leadership of Notre Dame. The current makeup of the Board of Regents Mo Bundon- Chairman Rob Palmarin – President of AMCND Most Reverend Daniel Bohan - Archbishop of Regina Terry Cooney Ken Fawcett Mike Gregory Gerry Inglis Annette Revet Dale Rondeau Gerald Maier - Chancellor With the utmost gratitude, we recognize Mr. Bill Lutz who stepped down from the Board of Regents this year. His contributions over the past years have been selflessly motivated for the betterment of Notre Dame. Bill attended Notre Dame as a student from 19681972. He served on the Board from 2001-2010 and served as President of the National Alumni Association (two terms). He received the Medal of Honour from Notre Dame 2009-2010 homecoming and received Volunteer of the Year 2005. Bill has been a committed member on our Realize the Dream campaign and continues to donate time, effort and funds in support of his beloved Notre Dame. Bill’s contributions will be included in the Legacy of Notre Dame. There has been an excitement on campus with the return of Rob Palmarin as the President of the College. Rob brings with him a renewed vision backed by three focused priorities; (1) healing the heart; (2) financial accountability; (3) and student recruitment and retention. His previous 20 years of service on campus has given him insights and experiences that will come to service the College well in the long run. Along with the personnel changes there have also been changes to the physical landscape of the College with the completion of the Varsity Hall project. Plans are also underway for the major upgrade to the gymnasium which will include new hardwood floor, a new sound system and a much needed interior facelift. The Notre Dame athletes will soon welcome their opponents with a renewed -4- spirit and pride and staff appreciate the opportunity to teach in this new state of the art facility. 2009-2010 has allowed for further analysis of the financial, budgeting and fundraising efforts. The College has made great strides in reduce its expenditures and re-aligning its finances in a more favorable position. With a lot of hard work and determination we have been relatively successful in our fundraising efforts. The Realize the Dream Campaign has brought in $10.3 million of endowment donations and a $1 million dollar pledge for the Capital fund. This campaign has provided Notre Dame with $5.1 million in funding since its inception. The Realize the Dream campaign includes as one of its initiatives, the Notre Dame Inspirational Speaker series where invited business leaders whose life, values and attitude toward overcoming obstacles were similar to Père Murray’s and would foster a personal connection with our students. Since 2005, thirteen business leaders have visited the College to share their own ‘struggle and emerge’ stories with our students. During 2009-10, Notre Dame had the pleasure of hosting James Pattison and Rebecca McDonald on campus. These visits are a win-win for all involved. The students and staff benefit greatly from the inspiring stories and wisdom shared by the speakers who challenge them with their message, and the speakers/guests are provided with the opportunity to learn more about Notre Dame with a personal campus tour, a luncheon with students and staff and a glimpse of what the Notre Dame Experience through the eyes and lives of those on campus. Mo Bundon Chairman Board of Regents Athol Murray College of Notre Dame -6- MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The Annual Report for 2009-2010 reflects the programs and operations of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame for the academic year beginning July 1, 2009 and ending June 30, 2010. The 2009-2010 school year at the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame was nothing short of outstanding. Heeding the wisdom of Father Athol Murray, our students were given the challenge to “achieve with character”. Using their individual initiative, students were invited to place themselves under God and then challenged to commit to a cause with the intent of benefitting not only themselves but also their community. Whether the initiative was stretching the academic mind in the classroom struggling and emerging through athletic and artistic competition, or seeking solace with God and one’s neighbour through prayer and outreach; the goal was to achieve with character and with right motivation. This brief snapshot or overview of the Notre Dame experience is a reflection of how our students met their challenges head on and reached above the bar in the many endeavors that were presented to them. Academics The academic program at Notre Dame primarily focuses on courses rooted in the liberal arts where students are challenged to “think well, write well and speak well”. One of Père’s favorite sayings from St. Augustine was, “To him who does what in him lies, God will not deny His grace.” Our teachers, house parents and coaches worked extremely hard to assist each student in the realization of his or her potential in mind, body and spirit. The 2010 graduating class achieved an average of 79% overall, with 59% of the students earning honour roll status. As a grade 9 – 12 school, 48% of the entire student body achieved the honour roll. Notre Dame kept pace with its five year average of graduates eligible to attend post secondary institutions at 95%. The Class of 2010 The 2010 graduating class together with our Junior A Hounds, accumulated a total of $1,187,133.00 in scholarship and bursary funding. Once again, this was an exceptional amount. Our 70 graduates will be attending the following colleges and universities: Bishop’s University Red Deer College University of Lethbridge Camosun College Ryerson University University of Manitoba Carleton University SAIT Polytechnic University of Minnesota Colorado College St. Francis Xavier University University of Ottawa Concordia University State University of New York University of Regina -7- Elmira College Fanshawe College Hamilton College Kazan State University Norwich University University of Alberta University of British Columbia University of Calgary University of the Fraser Valley University of Guelph University of Toronto University of Victoria Vancouver Island University Yale University York University Academic/Leadership Awards Notre Dame annually recognizes her graduating students who have achieved with great distinction. The President’s Cup and President’s list reflects the students who achieved outstanding results in academics, athletics, in spiritual endeavours and in community interaction. President’s Cup Winners: Matthew Brown & Elaine Lockwood President’s List: Scott Bolland, Paul Brisebois, Lindsay Brook, Diego Canton Mateos, Carson Grolla, Mary Fink, Taylor Lambert, Anton Martirosian, Mitchel Morrison, Megan Weisshaar, Samara Vigneron, Keenan Smith, Angelo Panas, Mickenzie Plemel, Tamber Tisdale, Meagan Vestby, & Crystal Duhaime. Other Leadership awards that were presented to our senior students included: Saskatchewan General Proficiency: Patrick Belisle, Troy Holfeld & Taylor Lambert Murray Renouf Maynard Leadership Award: Mitchel Morrison Mother Teresa (Works of Mercy Award): Samara Vigneron Inspirational Speaker Series The Inspirational Speakers Series founded and hosted by Paul Hill, a very close friend of Notre Dame, had two outstanding individuals, Rebecca MacDonald and Jimmy Pattison, visit the College this past year. Both Rebecca and Jimmy shared from the heart and their stories from lives well lived and sprinkled with their own struggle and emerge moments, touched our students and hopefully motivated them to aspire to taking the initiative as they continued with the plans they are making for the next phase of their lives. The Visual Arts, Choral and Drama Our students also excelled in expressing themselves as persons through our cultural and arts programs. Père’s love of the arts was very well-known and is highly visible throughout the campus from sculptures to paintings to the beautiful stained glass windows in -8- the church and the Tower of God. Père valued art for its ability to illustrate the spirit and truth of realities in a way few other things can. This year, students in our Visual Arts program were encouraged to develop and master basic skills in various media, from drawing and design to painting and sculpture. Art exhibitions were held during the Advent season, Parent’s Week and the May Alumni Weekend. For the past few years, drama at Notre Dame has been strictly an extracurricular activity. This year Notre Dame offered classes in which students could access more in depth training in the disciplines of acting, directing, scriptwriting, improvisation, mime and movement. The drama club also met weekly in the evening at the Athol Murray Centre for extra instruction and rehearsal. This year performers showcased their talent with two major productions. At Christmas they performed a classic Nativity Play and a student created piece called I hate you, Santa. The spring show included an excerpt from the play The Crucible and a one act comedy called This is a Play. The club also held improvisation performances at coffee houses throughout the school year. The Notre Dame Canadians, our choral group, concentrated on home performances at the Christmas concert and May long weekend. The Canadians also performed at a Mass for the western Canadian Catholic Bishops held in Blessed Sacrament Church in Regina. Here they played a couple of liturgical pieces but also sang the Notre Dame Prayer and Victory March for the Bishops. Athletics It was a banner year for athletics at the College. When the results were tallied, Notre Dame Athletic teams captured one national championship, seven provincial championships, seven league titles and a number of our teams were city, league and provincial finalists. Led by highly motivated and trained coaches, our student athletes were challenged on a daily basis to grow in their personal skill development, their strategic team play and their sportsmanship. We are not only proud of their successes but also with their character development as all of our teams truly lived out the school motto “luctor et emergo” (struggle and emerge). In addition to Sunday Mass, students and staff participated in daily reflections at our morning assemblies. Grade 11 and 12 students prepared and presented spiritual reflections on Tuesday and Wednesday each week, staff members on Monday and Thursday and our Chaplain Father Ramon Claro lead the reflections on Friday. Spiritual retreat days were organized for each grade level with the National Evangelization team coming to the College and offering us their gifts. Students had the opportunity to receive the Sacraments of the Catholic Church. In addition to weekly (and daily) Eucharist at Mass students were given a chance to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the advent and Lenten seasons. . A number of students also decided to participate in the Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults as they met weekly for training in order to received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. Hounds for Humanity/Outreach Hounds for Humanity is a volunteer senior student outreach group whose mission is to serve ‘above and beyond’ the required works of mercy. This group has chosen to focus itself on fulfilling Blessed Mother Teresa’s wisdom of doing ‘small things with great love’; - 11 - simply trying to aid those who are suffering and in need of assistance. Hounds for Humanity members generally end up being the leaders when it comes to our school outreach programs. This year, Students and staff provided over 3,500 hours of service. This number does not include the minimum 6000 hours that our students provide as part of their residence and day student responsibilities. Examples of H4H/Outreach events included our Jean Vanier Swim volunteers to our blood donors, to the Gulu Walk for Africa, and all who run/walk for cancer, MS, diabetes and other causes. Last year, there was one very special cause in support of our very own Mandi Schwartz ’06, who is currently battling leukemia. A special dinner evening was held for Mandi which was hosted by the girls of Mother Theresa Hall and featured the cuisine and culinary skills of Nicki’s Cafe from Regina. Our annual participation in the Terry Fox run and JDRF walk were other highlights of student outreach to others. Works of Mercy Works of Mercy is a compulsory component of our Christian Ethics classes. Each student completed a minimum of 10 hours of ‘Works of Mercy’. A typical Works of Mercy event had 14 students traveling to Regina to assist at one of the following Catholic elementary schools; Sacred Heart, St. Augustine or Deshaye. Students served by assisting the teachers in various ways, such as helping the elementary aged students with reading, spelling or arithmetic. Residential Life Notre Dame is quite unique as 90% of our students live in residence. Residential life at Notre Dame consists of three dormitories which house our male students; Fred Hill, Max Bell and Doc Seaman Hall. Our female students reside in Mother Teresa Hall. Living in the residences provides opportunities for our students to grow in personal responsibility, community living and leadership development. There were many examples of servant leaders in our residences. Two students emerged and were named House Leaders of the Year by their peers and House parents: Lindsay Brook & Carson Grolla. Humanitarian Award – Sisters of Charity of St. Louis Perhaps the highlight of the school year was the Humanitarian dinner held in October honouring the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis. Twelve members of the esteemed religious order were on hand to accept the award in recognition of the many years of service to Catholic education at Notre Dame, in Western Canada and throughout the world. The Sisters were deeply moved and the gala event was truly memorable as it allowed a number of alumni and current staff and students to celebrate the Sisters and to celebrate Notre Dame. The picture containing the names of all of the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis is now on display at Varsity Hall. The inscription on the picture which acknowledges the Sisters as Humanitarian Award winners reads as follows: The Sisters of Charity St. Louis Honoured for their commitment to youth, the poor And their outstanding contribution to Catholic education - 12 - Two loyal servants of Notre Dame This past year, the earthly city lost two true servants of Notre Dame, with the deaths of Jack Gorman and Martin Kenney. Jack Gorman’s legacy to Notre Dame was his book Pere Murray and the Hounds (the story of Saskatchewan’s Notre Dame College). The book is a testament to the miracle of Notre Dame and Jack’s love for the school, her founder and Hounds and Hounds everywhere. R. Martin Kenney assumed the leadership of the College after the passing of Father Athol Murray. Martin’s perseverance and insightful understanding of Father Murray’s ideals and vision characterized his leadership of Notre Dame from 1976-1991. God Bless you Jack and Martin and may perpetual light rest upon your souls. Our Staff 2009-2010 saw a few changes in the staffing at the College. Admissions Director Dave Kenney left Notre Dame and was replaced by John Smith. Bonnie Day also departed and Rose Flaman-Trehas became the new assistant to the President and Board of Regents. Darren Evjen moved on to the Swift Current Broncos of the WHL and Kevin White assumed the Head Coaches position for the Junior A Hounds. Monique Pollon returned to nursing in Regina and Sharron Bryce assumed the Nurse Manager position at Health Care. Mother Teresa North saw the departure of Aimee Kowalski and Angela Mallory and Adair Fotheringham became the new house parent. Ryan Matity and Grant Shave were replaced in CSO by Terry Stuermer and Andrew Beefus. Thank you to all departing staff for the service and dedication to Notre Dame. Teachers Margaret Campbell and Gillian Lambert also took up new teaching positions in Saskatoon and Ontario respectively and Mike Merriman came on Board as a Vice Principal/teacher. The Leadership team and the staff all contributed to improving the financial status of the College as expenses were held in check and there was a healthy improvement with fundraising. Our core program offerings with its multi-faceted curriculum delivered a balanced education in mind, body, spirit and community living. The leadership team continued to build a framework and a culture of authentic dialogue as it carried Notre Dame through its 90 th year of operation. The inspiration, wisdom, guidance and prayers from Father James Athol Murray still grace those at the College as he challenges we the stewards of Notre Dame to continue to move forward by building and leading the College. A leader of men must make decisions quickly be independent act and stand firm: be a fighter speak openly, plainly, frankly make defeats his lessons; cooperate; coordinate use the best of any alliances or allies’ walk with active faith courageously toward danger or the unknown create a staff: know, love and represent the best interest of his followers; be loyal, true, frank and faithful; reward loyalty; have a high, intelligent, and worthy purpose and ideal. do justice; love mercy fear no man but fear only God.
