Cross Creek Sponsors First Trainers’ Gathering
!
Approximately 50 people gathered at Cross Creek Paso Fino Farm"for the first IPHF Trainer's meeting. The purpose
of the meeting was to explain the current goals and ideas of the International Paso Horse Federation to the folks we
consider to be the backbone of the Paso Show Horse industry. Carlos Tobon and Javier Suarez distributed details about the
upcoming November show" and explanations were provided concerning what differences the trainers might expect while
showing at an" IPHF show." Bob Spence gave a short overview of some of the marketing techniques that the Federation feels
are so important to turning our market around in this difficult economic period and, as usual, Sheila Spence was happy to
accept new memberships." IPHF would like to thank Julito and Roseanne Garcia for graciously hosting this get together."

Juan Carlos Iriarte
June 11, 1961 - August 11, 2008
In Memorium
!
Paso friends bid a sad farewell to professional trainer Juan
Carlos Iriarte in Hickory, North Carolina on August 15th. Juan Carlos
fought a long and valiant battle against leukemia. During his three year
battle, Juan Carlos inspired many with his courage, grace, positive
attitude, and faith in God.
!
Juan Carlos was especially touched after being recently named
trainer of the year by the professional trainer’s association. His sister
Magda was with him at the hospital when he learned of the award and
shared his reaction, “You know,"that is really something, but I realize I've
spent my entire life trying to get others to notice me, and now I realize
that it's no longer about me, but about what God has done in my life." !!
"
Juan Carlos was an advocate for the National Bone Marrow
registry and benefited from an anonymous marrow donor. Learn how
you can help at www.marrow.org

It’s About The Heritage...
What is Heritage?
!
Heritage is histor y, it is an
appreciation of the past, a respect for
those who have come before us and left
a path, and an expectation of where
that path will take us in the future.
!
Why is Heritage so important
to IPHF members? It is because we
have been blessed to own and ride and
exhibit and watch the most unique
equine athlete in the world "" the Paso
Show Horse.
the first time we heard Maraquita La
Rosa on a sounding board or the day a
teena ged American girl went to
Colombia on a magnificent white
stallion named Profeta de Besilu and
won over the world. Heritage is
watching brothers competing against
brothers in the arena and then being
the first to o#er congratulations to the
victor. Heritage is watching second
and third generation trainers passing
on their skills and enthusiasm to their
children and then watching a trainer
cry when his ten year old son wins a
championship.
!
!
As today’s owners, trainers,
breeders, and exhibitors, we are the
caretakers of these horses "" what they
have been, where they are now, and
what we hope they become. And, we
are the caretakers of the Heritage.
He r i t a g e r e q u i r e s t h a t w e
acknowledge the contributions of those
early pioneers who through careful and
select breeding have given us the sport
we have today. Heritage requires that
when we see that grainy video of
Resorte IV, Bochica, and Contrapunto
competing that we stop to admire our
Heritage is what IPHF is all
breed’s founding fathers. Heritage is !
what makes us smile when we mark about. Come join us!
Paso Fino history in the United States
as BC and AC "" Before Capuchino and
Marcia Davis, President
After Capuchino.
!
Heritage can be those moments
in this sport that we all remember ""

SHOW JUDGES ANNOUNCED
!
IPHF is pleased to announce that five internationally certified judges have accepted the
federation’s invitation to judge the U.S. National Championship Show. American Judge Carlos Tobon
heads the lineup and is joined by Dr. Mauricio Comacho and Jaime Benavides of Colombia. Dr.
Rolando Colon Nebot and Diego Gonzalez of Puerto Rico round out the judging team.
!
IPHF has adopted a new judging format for the show which will feature non"conferring
placements. The top and bottom scores are thrown out and the three remaining scores will determine
the winner. The judges’ scores will be posted and judges will be permitted to explain their
placements. Members of the IPHF judges’ committee will be at the show and will monitor the
judging and the placements.
!
For additional information concerning the judges and the rules the judges will be using at the
show, visit the IPHF website at www.internationalpasohorsefederation.org

HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT
$as explained by Carlos Tobon and Javier Suarez%
GENERAL
Classes will be separated by age of the horse in months of age.
Each class has to have a minimum of 3 horses in a class, so that it can be held.
IFHF will offer Pleasure, Performance, Classic Fino and the diagonals.
The Non- Pro classes mean that the horse must be owned by an immediate family member. The name of
the owners must be on the registration in case of a partnership
Youth under 18 can not show in the non-pro classes.
Youth under 18 can not ride a stallion.
Every horse must go through the pre pista. IPHF will not enforce the height and or white marking rule.
Pre pista is for the soundness and tack requirements
Horses will be allowed to warm up in the pre pista.
Everyone must be a current member of IPHF in order to participate.
IPHF will establish a point system for high point’s awards for shows and end of the year for trainers,
horses, and owners.
DIVISIONS
All of the divisions will be judged 50% in quality of gait
(balance, rhythm, symmetry, harmony, tracking, croup
movement, quickness of football, clarity of footfall) and the
other 50% on the requirements and tests of the class.
The sounding board is part of the requirement of the class
before selecting the finalists.
Each horse will be introduced individually.
In pleasure, more emphasis has been placed in the
mannerism and flat walk.
In pleasure, all horses over 60 months must be shown with
bit only.
UNIFORM
It is Black pants, white long sleeve shirt, white straw hat with black band, and black boots. Jacket and
zamarros are optional. Zamarros are required for the diagonals.
INTERESTED IN STARTING AN IPHF GROUP IN YOUR AREA?
IPHF’s resident business structure expert is putting the finishing touches on our governance rules. Our
goal is to permit groups in our member areas to form “a&liates”. These a&liates, made up of at least twenty
members, may then organize sanctioned shows under the IPHF banner. The show organizers can pick the
classes it wants to hold and have those classes judged under IPHF rules. For example, if members in a certain
geographic area are fino fans, they can have a “fino show”. In other areas, where non"pro is the major interest,
an a&liate can have a “non"pro” only show. By allowing members the freedom to plan their shows their way,
IPHF believes that scheduling will be easier, spectators will be entertained, and the promotion of the show
horse will flourish. The governance rules will be on the website. Ask any of the o&cers or committee
members about starting your own area a&liate.

IPHF Trainers’ Group to Entertain At Gala
!
The Sebastian Ferrero Foundation is hosting the Noche
de Gala on November 20, 2008 in Gainesville, Florida and IPHF
members are pitching in to provide entertainment for the event.
The foundation was started in December 2007 to honor the
memory of Sebastian Ferrero. Sebastian, a happy and healthy
three year old boy, died as a result of a series of medical errors at
Shands. The Ferrero family has teamed with Shands and the
University of Florida to fundraise to build a freestanding full
service children’s hospital in Gainesville, Florida.
!
IPHF members and professional trainers Julito Garcia, Jose
Ochoa, and Carlos Tobon have been involved in planning for the
event and have invited some of the best Paso Show Horses in the
world to attend and perform for the Gala attendees. Fellow
members Javier Suarez, David Castro, Carlos Alberto Sierra, Jimmy
Espino, Alvin Perez, Alei Ortiz, Josi Nieves and many others have
committed to exhibit horses at the event.
!
Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Leon have been asked by the
Ferrero family to serve as honorary chairs for the event. The
Leon family recently donated $100,000 to the foundation after
meeting Horst Ferrero and learning of the foundation’s mission.
