The theme for this year’s meeting is “Fundamentals in Orthopaedics – Back to Basics”. Every year, the field of medicine takes an even greater step into the future, with new tools, products and surgical methods molding the way we practice and treat our patients. The learning process never stops in our profession, but as we develop our skills with the times, we should always keep in mind the underlying processes behind these developments, the basics. To understand the changes in our practice, we should be able to review the crucial theories that form the building blocks of the orthopaedics field. Only through this review are we able to connect the dots, helping us to focus back on why and how we practice. From this, we not only improve in the physical treatment of our patients, but also deliver a wellrounded form of healthcare to the individuals we took an oath to care for. This message is what we hope will carry through within the halls of the conference venue during this period. A marvelous scientific programme has been developed in the hands of Dato’ Dr Azmi Baharudin and Assoc Prof Dr Abdul Halim Abd Rashid, who are at the helm the Organising Committee of the MOA ASM. There were scores of entries for this years award-based categories, namely the Mahmood Merican Best Masters Thesis Awards and Best Basic Science Poster Awards, as well as the Subir Sengupta Best Published Clinical Paper Award and P. Balasubramaniam Best Published Translational Medicine Paper Award. I look forward as I am sure you do, to observing the presentations that qualified for each category. This year, we are proud to have the AAA join our programme with their own annual meeting. We welcome the many arthroplasty surgeons from around the region who we have looked forward to meeting. Dr Jamal Azmi Mohamad, the Organising Chairman of this year’s AAA meeting, along with his Organising Committee have worked to plan the highly thought-provoking and interactive sessions we anticipate. Johor Bahru is a city that constantly evolves. In recent times, it has emerged as a dynamic and fascinating place, getting the attention of other cities in Malaysia. It has become a hub for entertainment , with the opening of the Johor Premium Outlets and internationally renowned theme parks such as Legoland and Sanrio Hello Kitty Town. The state of Johor has a powerful history, dating back to the 1500s. Much of its history is still available to see, many of which are on the Johor Heritage trail. Johor is also home to some of the world’s oldest rainforests and natural features, including Gunung Ledang, which features in one of Malaysia’s most famous folktales. Johor is not just a place for business; it is one for many pleasant adventures as well. So if you have brought your family along, you can be sure to that each member has a fair share of exciting activities to engage in. On a final note, I would like to thank you for being a part of this year’s conference and hope your experience here is an enlightening one, with plenty of food for thought. Yours Sincerely, Dato’ Badrul Shah Badaruddin President Malaysian Orthopaedic Association OFFICE BEARERS 2015/ 2016 President President-Elect Immediate Past-President Hon Secretary : Dato’ Dr Badrul Shah Badaruddin : Dato’ Dr Azmi Baharudin : Prof Dr Azlina Amir Abbas : Prof Dr Wan Faisham Nu’man Wan Ismail Hon Treasurer Council Member Editorial Secretary Hon Auditors : Dr Sa’adon Ibrahim : Dr Chan Chee Ken : Dr Mohd Fairuz Suhaimi : Dr Chye Ping Ching : Dato’ Dr Lim Boon Ping : Dr Low Tze Choong 9 10 Combined Meeting of the 46th Malaysian Orthopaedic Association Annual General Meeting / Annual Scientific Meeting & 10th ASEAN Arthroplasty Association Meeting 2016 FOREWORD BY ORGANISING CHAIRMAN OF THE 46TH MOA ASM 2016 Since the year 1968, the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association has been at the forefront of making information on the latest medical innovations and discoveries in the field of orthopaedics available to the Malaysian Orthopaedic Surgeon community. Throughout the years, our goal has never changed; to promote the advancement of science, arts and the practice of orthopaedic surgery and allied science as stated in the constitution. As such, it is our responsibility as a society to ensure that the members within our community move with the times, giving them the tools to be the best orthopaedic surgeons and allied health professionals they can be. This year, we continue in the tradition of spreading knowledge with a scientific meeting based on the theme “Fundamentals In Orthopaedics: Back To Basics”. No matter the changes or developments in the way and tools we use to practice orthopaedic surgery, the underlying principles and proven theories will remain constant with every advancement. Because of that, we must be prepared to go back to the basics every once in a while, making sure that through working with the latest implants and surgical approaches, we do not forget the fundamentals of our field. This year, the Organising Committee has worked hard and meticulously to provide all of you with a great selection of topics within the different subspecialities in orthopaedics. We have also made it a point to address the matter of pain in our topics, which is a crucial element in understanding what our patient’s go through. Osteoporosis is another issue that can play a huge part in many cases we deal with. As such, we have included it as a new subspeciality division in our scientific programme in partnership with the Malaysian Osteoporosis Society. Assoc Prof Dr Abdul Halim Abd Rashid, the Scientific Chairman of this year’s conference, has ensured that the sessions you will be attending over the next few days provide you with the information that is the most relevant in the Malaysian, if not international, orthopaedics stage today. I look forward to sitting through some of these sessions myself. Johor Bahru is a city that provides wonderful platform for such an event to be held. You will not only be able to receive an education during this period, but also be able to enjoy the fascinating sights and sounds that the city has to offer. Steeped in both tradition and modernisation, it is a fitting place to have our conference this year, which propogates a similar ideal. I hope you have a great time here in Johor Bahru. Never stop learning, and enjoy the journey. On behalf of the ASEAN Arthroplasty Association (AAA), I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the arthroplasty surgeons here today from the different corners of the ASEAN region. The AAA convenes in the fascinating city of Johor Bahru, Malaysia this year for its landmark 10th AAA Meeting. The mission of the association remains as strong today as it did when it was founded in Singapore in the year 2007; to promote and develop the knowledge and skills in hip and knee reconstruction surgery in the ASEAN countries and to serve as a platform for academic excellence and nurturing clinical research. Malaysia first played host to the conference in 2011, and we are honored to be hosting it again. Through the years, we have made new acquaintances, strengthened our bonds of friendship and trained many young surgeons within the region. With this meeting, we hope to continue with tradition, while promoting the latest technological advances that have brought our field to where it is today. The theme “Back to Basics”, which has been adopted for this year’s conference, promotes the ideal that basic sciences and principles of surgery need to be revisited from time to time as it is the key to being a great surgeon. I would like to thank Dato’ Dr Badrul Shah Badaruddin, the president of the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association (MOA), Dato’ Azmi Baharudin, the Organising Chairman of this year’s MOA Annual General Meeting/ Annual Scientific Meeting and his committee for graciously sharing the podium for this conference. MOA’s generous nature is one we will always appreciate and cherish. As I have mentioned before, Johor Bahru is a truly intriguing city. There is much to see and do here. You do not have to go far to find exciting things to do. Take a walk outside the convention centre or your hotel and you may just find a pleasant surprise around the corner. Malaysia is home to some of the best cuisine in the world. I am keen to see what Johor will offer in the culinary department. Open yourself to all the wonderful experiences you could have here, both educational and social. I wish you a pleasant stay in Johor Bahru! Roles And Responsibilities. A View From A Humanitarian And Colleague. Mankind has never known such a world since the dawn of recorded history. The world is globalised, physical geographical boundaries are blurred, human beings are more connected and surrounded by technology than ever before, and in many ways there have been more advances in every field of human endeavour in the last century and a half than there had been in the preceding three thousand years. At the same time the world is faced with more challenges in every aspect. Every great development, and every great advance in technology has been accompanied by more risks and adverse effects. There is more inequality in the world today although there is more wealth to go around. Although there has not been a global war and singular major conlict for the last 70 years, there have been many smaller conlicts of which some have lasted longer than either the First or Second World Wars. More people are displaced throughout the world now than at any other time since the end of the Second World War. Natural disasters have become more severe, more frequent and have had far more devastating impact as the areas that have been affected tend to be more developed and populated than they were before. Natural and man-made phenomena combine to accelerate and aggravate the impact of climate change, making the world less secure. All is not lost though, as advances that benefit everyone have also taken place. Not least in the overall field of medicine and healing as well as healthcare in general. Specifically, the field of orthopaedics has grown and advanced by leaps and bounds over the last half century, There is more knowledge, more skill sets, more methods and techniques available. These advances have also been varied and diverse, ranging from new surgical techniques to new fixation modalities to the use of digital technology and 3-D printing. There are also new frontiers in robotics and bionics, with even newer Nano-technology coming to the fore. Being both biological and yet mechanical in nature, orthopaedics has a lot of room for interaction between different technologies, granting it pride of place among medical and surgical specialties in today’s inter-connected world. In humanitarian action, which is becoming increasingly important as the world grapples with all its problems, both manmade and natural, orthopaedics surgery has traditionally been involved in emergency medical relief. However, the last few years has seen more room for more active and deeper roles for the orthopaedic surgeon, both in trauma care as well as rehabilitation and specific areas such as orthotics and prosthetics. 13 14 Combined Meeting of the 46th Malaysian Orthopaedic Association Annual General Meeting / Annual Scientific Meeting & 10th ASEAN Arthroplasty Association Meeting 2016 FACULTY - INTERNATIONAL SPEAKERS Prof Dr Aree Tanavalee Thailand Dr Jamal Ashraf India Asst Prof Dr Pornpavit Sriphirom Thailand Dr Ariyanto Bawono Indonesia Dr Jonathan Flordelis Philippines Dr Pruk Chaiyakit Thailand Dr Charlee Sumettavanich Thailand Dr Jose Antonio G. It is capable of performing as a reliable functional traction device and as an aided device in various fields. The features of this product will be discussed in further detail. Bone banking has greatly increased the options for the surgeons in the management of severe osseous defects. Bone graft procedures are no longer limited by available autogenous bone. The possibility of disease transfer with bone allografts is very unlikely if the material is procured and processed according to tissuebanking protocols. Physiotherapy Management plays an important role in orthopaedic management. This talk will cover about the general rules and management of physiotherapy in orthopaedic conditions such as fracture, tendinitis etc. It is suitable for juniors physiotherapist, medical doctors or others health science professions that need to have further understanding about physiotherapy management in orthopaedic conditions. These days, Johor Bahru is a wonderful mix of old and new, with houses of culture such as museums, temples and mosques and a heritage district that offers a glimpse of old world Malaya. The trendy galleries and cafes located around town will appeal to any wandering soul. If you are the nature-loving individual, the Iskandar region has multiple parks, trails and natural areas that would be guaranteed to wake up and de-stress any weary mind. For the young and young at heart, Johor Bahru is home to two theme parks, namely Legoland and Sanrio Hello Kitty Town. Shopping will not take a back seat here, with Johor Premium Outlets being the go-to place for great deals on quality items. Find out more on Johor Bahru’s top places to visit below: Johor Bahru Heritage Trail Some of the favourites are located close together in the historic heart of the city and can be covered easily through a walking tour. You may start the trail from the High Court and from there move on to areas of great historical and cultural significance, such as the Sultan Ibrahim Building, Johor Bahru Chinese Heritage Museum, Central Police Station, Broadway Cinema and the Grand Palace and Royal Abu Bakar Museum. On Jalan Tan Hiok Nee (which is part of the trail), you may obtain a free copy of the Johor Bahru Heritage Trail booklet produced by the Johor Bahru City Council from the road’s landmark, an old, red building which is located at the corner of the street. Legoland Malaysia Legoland Malaysia is a family holiday destination with more than 70 hands-on rides, slides, shows and attractions. You can push, pedal and program, or steer, squirt and splash your way through a truly interactive experience – with a fair share of building in between. Don’t miss out on Miniland, where Asian landmarks have been recreated using more than 30 million LEGO bricks. This is definitely something for families, or even the adventurous adult to enjoy. Johor Premium Outlet (JPO) Johor Premium Outlet is the main shopping centre in Iskandar, Johor, Malaysia. It is the first luxury premium brand outlet in Southeast Asia. This shopping centre is located at Kulai District, which is about 12 minutes from Senai International Airport and 35 minutes from Johor Bahru City Centre by car. The best choice to get there is by taxi with its affordable fare. This would be a shopper’s paradise with 130 outlets to shop from and is definitely worth the visit. If you were buying tires, would you pick the ones that last for 15,000 miles or the ones that last for 30,000 miles? *A technology from smith&nephew Lasts longer. Implant earlier. Also, a reduction in total polyethylene wear volume or wear rate alone may not result in an improved clinical outcome as wear particle size and morphology are also critical factors in the evaluation of the potential for wear mediated osteolysis and associated aseptic implant loosening. Particle size and morphology were not evaluated as part of the testing.
