New Mom Shares Her
Family’s NICU Experience
F
Few things in life match the excitement of a young couple
expecting their first child.
Kara Owen was just 18 weeks pregnant when a routine
sonogram revealed a suspicious spot that called for more
testing. As it turned out, tests confirmed her unborn
child had gastroschisis—a birth defect where the child’s
intestines protrude to the outside of the body through a
hole in the abdomen.
At 36 weeks, Kara’s obstetrician put her on bed rest.
Two weeks later, she went into labor and (due to
complications during labor) delivered her newborn
by emergency C-section.
Shortly after little Mollie’s arrival, a pediatric surgeon
successfully performed surgery to repair the gastroschisis.
After 19 days of recovery, Mollie made a smooth transition
home. Today she is a healthy girl with only the tiniest hint
of a scar.
“There was a lot of anxiety because there were so many
stages of recovery Mollie had to achieve,” Kara shares.
“The care we received was wonderful! I would highly
recommend Baptist Health Systems to anyone. The
doctors, nurses and our entire NICU experience were
incredible. Not only did the staff want to make sure Mollie
was doing well, they were genuinely concerned about our
family as a whole.”
Kara laughs as she recalls, “Our first night home was a
blend of sheer chaos and excitement. We are very, very
grateful for the service and care…and so thankful Mollie
is doing well.”

Mary Jane Finney
Cancer Survivor Found Everything
She Needed Close to Home
M
Mary Jane Finney’s challenging journey with cancer began
more than 25 years ago. “It started as a thickening in my
breast and most doctors showed little concern about it,”
she recalls. “At the time I was working in Columbia, South
Carolina, and after about a year, I went to another doctor.
Though mammography did not indicate a problem, this
doctor suggested a biopsy. To everyone’s surprise, it came
back malignant. I was devastated.”
“Because of the type of cancer it was, I had a mastectomy
and returned to my family’s home in Gadsden, Alabama,
to recuperate,” she continues. “Shortly after I recovered, I
decided to move to Jackson, Mississippi. My younger sister
lived there and I had plans to earn my master’s degree in
family counseling at Reformed Theological Seminary.”
Several years later, after receiving her degree, Mary Jane
established a counseling practice in Jackson. “I enjoyed
my practice, my church, and my sister’s sweet, growing
family,” she says. “My life was very fulfilling.”
During a 1992 check-up, a CT scan revealed lesions in
both of her lungs and a biopsy resulted in a diagnosis of
metastatic breast cancer. “After seeking medical advice
from several physicians, I chose to treat it with Tamoxifen.
After three years of treatment, there was no trace of the
lesions. It was a miracle.”
Once more, Mary Jane returned to her busy lifestyle only to
be interrupted, again, by the results of a “routine” checkup.
This time, a malignant tumor was discovered on her right
adrenal gland.
“Again, I set out on my thorough pursuit of possible
therapies and ultimately decided on a very aggressive
treatment which did successfully attack the cancer,” Mary
Jane says. “However, it also caused a blood disorder that
prompted my kidneys to fail and I had to undergo many
additional treatments including dialysis. Finally, after two
years of dialysis (and reversing the blood disorder), my kidney
function improved enough that I was able to get off dialysis.”

Considering her remarkable experiences with cancer as
well as a serious blood disorder, and because of her faith
and relentlessly resilient attitude in the midst of all these
challenges, friends encouraged her to write a book to
encourage others.
Mary Jane took their advice and published A Stable Place.
She is quick to explain, “When I asked my doctor if I was
‘well,’ she told me I was ‘stable.’ As a lover of horses, that
word took on a special meaning to me. A stable is a place
of safety for horses. That is why I used it in the title of the
book and that is where I am today…stable.
“I am enormously grateful for the wonderful care I received
at Baptist, for the support of my friends and family, and
my church. Because Baptist Health Systems had all the
services I required, and some were complicated, I was
able to have all my treatments here in Jackson so close to
those who helped and encouraged me. My faith in God has
sustained me through all of this. As stated so beautifully in
Psalm 46, God has been, and continues to be, ‘my refuge
and my strength, my ever-present help in trouble.’”

Carry the Mission, Baptist’s employee giving campaign, is thriving!
About half of Baptist’s employees actively support Carry the Mission. That’s
nothing short of incredible! In 2013, employees, with the Baptist match,
raised $340,000. Last year, 710 employees received support from Carry the
Mission through our Employee Benevolence Fund, Hail Storm Assistance
or Scholarships. The Employee Benevolence Fund has provided support
to over 1,000 fellow employees in need with nearly $2 million since our
humble beginnings. We also provided $100,000 to 50 local nonprofits last
year. Over the past 5 years, employees have provided more than half a
million dollars to hundreds of nonprofits impacting our local communities.

to stay healthy and enjoy all the fun moments of life.
Approximately 48 percent of women ages 40 to 64 in
Mississippi have not had a mammogram within the past year.
Two problems that plague Mississippi women—low income
and inadequate or no insurance—are common reasons.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Mississippi.
Although we have fewer cases of breast cancer than the
national average, our death rate is higher.
While breast cancer is no laughing matter, we are using
the power of women’s laughter and energy to raise money
for women who need help getting breast care. That means
that whatever we do to raise money for fund for the girls,
we’re going to have FUN together.

Tickled Pink at The Manship
When: Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, from 3:30–8:30 p.m.
Where: River Hills Club in Jackson
What: The Center for Breast Health at Baptist Medical
Center will host a Doubles/Mixed Doubles Round
Robin tennis competition. The event will include
food, music, a silent auction and prizes for the
tournament winners.

Patient Plans a Meaningful Gift

What brought a manufacturing engineer from
California to Mississippi? “I did my research,” says Joe
Goodell. “Upon retiring from Boeing, I was seeking
adventure and a new culture. Among my many travels
was a visit to the central area of Mississippi where I
ultimately settled. I was pleasantly amazed that Jackson
offers such an impressive healthcare industry. As it
turns out, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing a variety of
specialists and, last year, I had open-heart surgery. I am
especially impressed with the technology, expertise and
care at Baptist Health Systems.”
In response to the care and service Joe received, he
wanted to do something special for Baptist. Rather than
receive his IRA withdrawal, Joe chose to “pass it on.”
“I feel I’m not just giving to Baptist, but am investing in
something significant,” Joe says. “I believe, after one’s
family, it is wise to support your local area. That’s
why I opted to do something that would benefit my
community and my neighbors. I feel really good about
my investment in Baptist Health Systems…and, of
course, my return on it. I have enjoyed getting to
know people in Mississippi and want to feel like I’m
leaving a legacy that will help with their future.”

Educators Find Immense Value in Classroom Health Resources

“Baptist HealthTeacher and GoNoodle are amazing and we
look forward to using them every day,” says Mrs. Kimberly
Bell, a first-grade teacher at Midtown Jackson’s Brown
Elementary School. Mrs. Bell is one of the many teachers
across an 18-county region using these important and
inspiring programs provided by the Baptist Health
Foundation.
Baptist HealthTeacher is a dynamic and interactive online
health curriculum for K-12 teachers full of comprehensive
resources to teach children healthy habits and life skills.
It addresses top health issues identified by today’s teachers
including bullying, nutrition, social/emotional health,
physical activity, sexual behavior, and alcohol and other
drug abuse.

decision-making!”
GoNoodle, a component of Baptist HealthTeacher, offers
physical activity games by providing “brain breaks” of
quick, five-minute sessions designed to encourage student
engagement and focus. Mrs. Bell (Brown Elementary) says
her students enjoy GoNoodle. “There are a variety of games
from which to choose,” she says. “After running races or
dancing, students love to calm down with deep-breathing
and stretching games. GoNoodle recharges students in the
middle of the day when boredom and fatigue may be issues.
In fact, it is so much fun, I would say many students prefer
GoNoodle to PE.”
“I think any teacher or counselor will tell you that
bullying is a big issue in our schools now,” says Kevin
Bailey, a counselor at McLeod Elementary in Jackson.
“HealthTeacher addresses this with fun and interactive
games. Through role-playing, kids really start to understand
how to be an ‘upstander’ instead of a ‘bystander’ when it
comes to bullying. Not only is it an effective tool, the kids
enjoy it.”
The Baptist Health Foundation is pleased to provide
teachers quick and simple-to-use programs and games that
address many of the issues students face in today’s school
environment. Mrs. Rainey (McLeod Elementary) appreciates
the positive difference made through such high levels of
engagement among teachers and students. “HealthTeacher
and GoNoodle are truly amazing,” she says. “As long as
these wonderful platforms are made available, I will use
them on a daily basis. The results speak for themselves.”
Mrs. Sharon Rainey, a first-grade teacher at McLeod, adds
that HealthTeacher “is easy to blend with other lessons
so the kids learn about exercise and nutrition without
