Potawatomi and Forest County
Announce Intergovernmental
Agreement over land sale
Submitted by the Forest County Potawatomi and Forest
County
The Forest County Potawatomi Community
(Potawatomi) and Forest County announced that they
have signed an intergovernmental agreement which will
improve government-to-government communication and
allow for more cooperation on key issues in Forest County.
“The Potawatomi share our goal in promoting the
county’s economy, preserving its environment and
enhancing the quality of life for all its residents,” said
Erhard Huettl, Forest County Board Chairman. “It is
important that we work together to reach those goals.”
According to the agreement, the Potawatomi and
Forest County will consult with each other on issues of
mutual interest.
“We are looking forward to working with the
members of the County Board to ensure that Forest
County is a place where people will want to raise a family
and do business for generations to come,” said
Potawatomi Chairman Gus Frank.
The Potawatomi and Forest County also
announced that they have reached a settlement regarding
land sale agreements dating back to 1980. The settlement
stems from a 30 year old mining company agreement with
Forest County to purchase approximately 880 acres of
county land in Lincoln Township. As part of the Crandon
mine purchase in 2003, the Potawatomi was assigned that
right to purchase the 880 acres of land in Lincoln
Township.
Instead of selling the 880 acres in the Town of
Lincoln to the Potawatomi, Forest County has agreed to
re-pay the $1.5 million that has been received as option
payments on the land. The Potawatomi will receive 400
acres of land owned by Forest County to compensate for
the interest accrued on the option payments.
The Potawatomi will also contribute $130,000
annually to Forest County for the next five years to support
economic development and law enforcement, as well as
enhance the general health and welfare of county
residents.

Lumberjack
Steam Train
To Kick Off
2011 Season
on June 22
Season will run
June 22 - August 27
LAONA, WI -- The historic Lumberjack Steam
Train made its first run of the year to the Wisconsin
Forestry Museum Complex on June 22, 2011. Take the
whole family on a trip back in time with a ride on a vintage
steam train, located in Laona, Wis., within convenient
driving distance of Chicago, the Twin Cities and all points
in Wisconsin.
Tickets on the Lumberjack Steam Train include
the round-trip ride and admission into the Wisconsin
Forestry Museum Complex of historic and natural
attractions, including the Logging Museum and
Blacksmith Shop, Green Treasure Forest Tour, Animal
Barn and Corral, the Nature Center, Cracker Barrel Store,
Francis Weiner Diesel Static Display and Choo Choo Hut
Restaurant & Picnic Area. Visitors are welcome to bring
their own picnic coolers.
Last year, the tracks for the Lumberjack Steam
Train were completely rebuilt. The original track dated to
the early 1900s and had not been fully replaced, only
maintained. The original 60-pound rail, which was
replaced, dated from the mid- to late-1800s.. The newest
technical equipment was brought in to secure new 90pound rails and raise the road bed. Green Bay-based
Holubar Construction accomplished the task of bringing
the railroad up to to modern federal rail standards. The rail
bed has been raised about 15 inches, and new rebuilt
steps and platforms are ready to help visitors get on and
off the train.
Once again, visitors will be able to ride in an old
box car originally built by Haskel and Barker in July 1920
and part of the Laona & Northern Railway. The vintage car
has been carefully converted into an open-air observation
car.
Also new in 2011 are additions to the petting zoo
including kittens, goats and miniature horses.
The 2011 season will again feature a number of
special events, including a cowboy reenactment and the
annual fall festival. The last summer run is August 27, with
fall special tours scheduled for September 17, 24 and
October 1. The Lumberjack Steam Train has four runs a
day to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum complex and is
open Monday through Saturday, rain or shine. Group rates
are available. The Lumberjack Steam Train offers free
admission, with proper identification, to active duty armed
services personnel and their families.

Painful attacks may be the symptom most
associated with gout, but you shouldn’t let them prevent
you from addressing its underlying cause. Gout is caused
by a buildup of uric acid in your blood (hyperuricemia). As
your uric acid level rises, so does the potential for gout
and gout flares.
There are pain medications available to help
during gout flares. But only by taking steps to decrease
your uric acid level and keeping it there can you fight for
fewer flares over the long term. In fact, reducing uric acid
levels to less than 6 mg/dL is the goal for managing gout
over the long term.
There are options that may help get you there.
So, if you’re still suffering from gout flares, it is time to take
action. Talk with your healthcare professional about your
flares and your high uric acid level. The sooner you do, the
sooner you may be able to get on track for fighting back.

Lake Hilbert Association
Annual Meeting
On May 28th, the Lake Hilbert Association held
it’s annual meeting. Discussion followed on the Walleye
Reef that was put in to aid in walleye spawning. Much
excitement is felt that with the building of the reef, which
cost about $3,200, walleye have an area to spawn. The
DNR advised the committee consisting of King Kramer,
Jim Walker, Glenn Gardipee and Lake Association
President Dick Meneau that the northeast corner of the
lake would be the best spot to build. Lee Schauman and
Bob Nelson took on the big project and did a great job.
Family Fest will be held July 2nd & 3rd.
Fireworks will be held Saturday July 2nd. Fireworks are
sponsored by the Town of Goodman. We will feature the
same great food, kids games and prizes Saturday and
Sunday. Proceeds from our Family Fest are used for fish
stocking and donated to the needs of the community. We
are grateful for all the support we receive from the people
of the area.
Discussion was held on the problem of invasive
species, especially zebra muscles and Eurasian milfoil
which are invading area lakes. So far we do not have a
problem with them, but it is important that anyone who
brings a boat into our lake, cleans their boat off thoroughly
before launching. Muscles can cling on a boat alive for up
to 5 days. Signs are posted begging fishermen to help
keep our lakes free from these terrible invasive species. If
they get started, they can destroy the lake and make
fishing impossible.
Education is very important.
Fishermen have to take the time to clean their boats and
equipment.
The Lumberjack Links Golf Outing
(L-R) Gene and Betsy Hodson with partners Ruth and Paul Langer
used their putting skills to win prizes at the Lumberjack Links Golf
Outing
The inaugural Lumberjack Links Golf Outing
goes down as a smashing success. The event was held
June 12 at McCauslin Brook Golf and Country Club in
Lakewood. The competition, which was held as a
scramble, began at noon as perfect weather finally made
its way onto the greens. Kathleen Marsh was in charge of
planning and organizing the day. She was assisted by the
ever-friendly McCauslin Golf Course Staff.
Several “Friends of the Logging Camp” were also
on hand to help: Jon Marsh, Bruce Beno, John Brantmeier,
Linda Ahles, and Tom Thielke. Friends Janet Biese, Jean
Beno, Barb Ouellette and Fay Thielke all donated
delicious homemade goodies for the buffet supper.
Taking home the Grand Prize with a score of 67
were Ken Klein, Ralph Klein, Steve Heimerman and Brian
Palmer. Individual prizes went to Betsy Hodson, Paul
Langer, Janet Biese, and Craig Kowalski.
All proceeds from the event will go to the
restoration of the Holt & Balcom Logging Camp Museum.
Anyone interested in becoming a “Friend of the Logging
Camp” may call 715-276-6515 or email
[email protected] for more details.
And don't forget the July 25 special program “My
Life as a Lumberjack” starring Bill Kamke as John
Nelligan. Two performances will be held, one at 2:00 p.m.
and one at 7:00 p.m. in the air-conditioned McCauslin
Brook Clubhouse. Admission is just $5.00 per person.
Children 10 and under are free. The camp is closed this
summer for restoration, but be sure to come out and view
our restoration project progress, funded 100% by local
fundraising events and private donations!

Lakewood Assisted Living
“Live Life With Confidence”
Assisted living allows frail seniors, who are unable to stay at home
but do not need 24-hour skilled nursing care, to move into a residential
setting with services designed to meet their needs. Residents can create
an individualized care program that changes as their needs change,
allowing older Americans to age in place. In addition to being less
expensive than skilled nursing care, assisted living provides residents with
private apartments rather than an institutional setting. Care and services
are delivered with an emphasis on maintaining an individual's
independence, dignity, and privacy.
Lakewood Assisted Living is located in a rural setting with lakes,
rivers, streams, and a beautiful National Forest close by, giving you the
feeling of being “Up North”. If this is the type of setting you are looking for
then give us a call to set up a personal walk through of the home. Please
call 715-276-1680 to set up an appointment today.

Nicolet College offers two
international study opportunities in January
Submitted by Marge Bocek, Parish Secretary
Excerpts from a letter from Mrs. Clara Houle to Gertrude
Cummingham, dated April 18, 1937, and mailed from
Soperton (Wabeno, WI).
“We came to North Crandon (Argonne) in August of 1886.
Our first priest was Father Taken, he used to come to
Crandon about every six months and say mass at the John
Masbaum store building. We would go, sometimes walk,
sometimes ride a big lumber wagon, and glad to go any old
way. There were only about 3 or 4 families them some
came from Cavour. In September of 1988 Dennis was born
and he was baptized by Father July of Rhinelander. Still
would go to mass in the same place in Crandon. Father
July would stop at our house, now the Kluss place, at the
junction, cause there wer no sighn of a town then Argonne.
By the time Lydia was baptized, he came to Wall. Wall was
a village about a mile east of Argonne. Lydia was baptized
in 1892. The priest would come every six months or so and
we wouldn't miss a chance of going. Then when Henry was
baptized in 1894, Father Toplak of Eagle River baptized in
North Crandon (Argonne). We used to have mass then in
the old town hall which burnt. Then right after that we built
the church there. There were then I don't think any more
than 8 to 10 families, and some came from Cavour. I think
that church must have been built somewhere around 1895.
We had to go to Crandon after all our groceries. I
tell you our life wasn't all roses them days but I always
prayed to God to leave me live to bring up my family and
I'm thankful He heard my prayers. . . “
St. Mary's in North Crandon (Argonne) was
dedicated on October 6, 1900, by Bishop Messmer of
Green Bay. North Crandon was changed to Argonne in
1921. During Father Gonnering's pastorate, from 1906
until 1911, he also enlarged St. Mary's in North Crandon
(Argonne), and built St. Michael's at Hiles.
St. Mary's in Argonne had seen many changes
since its dedication in 1900, one being the addition of a bell
tower. In 1905 the Ladies of St. Mary's (which later became
known at St. Rose Altar Society) donated the bell for the
new bell tower. St. Mary's celebrated 100 years of service
with their last Mass on October 6, 2000. The Diocese of
Green Bay officially closed St. Mary's January 27, 2001.
The steeple was removed and the bell was donated to St.
Joseph's in Crandon.
On Saturday, June 11, 2010 Father Ralph Gillis
held a blessing and dedication ceremony of St. Mary's Bell
which is located on the north west corner of the church
grounds. Clarence Krustensterna who designed and built
the new bell tower was instrumental in refurbishing the bell
back to its original condition (it had been painted white)
was on hand for the unveiling.
As the many people looked on, both from St.
Joseph's, Crandon and formerly from St. Mary's Argonne
Townsend Variety Show Directors (L-R) Sue
Rapp, Ruth Benoit, Kathleen Marsh and Pam Pederson
present a check for $1,600 to Scott Wycherley of the
Christian Food Pantry housed at St. John Church in
Townsend.
The group also collected over $400 in nonperishable food items from attendees at two shows staged
April 30, making this the group's largest donation in its six
years of existence.

Mursau, State Assembly Pass Balanced Budget
MADISON – State Representative Jeff Mursau (RCrivitz) issued the following statement Thursday
regarding passage of the State of Wisconsin’s biennial
budget:
“This is a historic day for Wisconsin,” Mursau
said. “The legislature and I passed a budget eliminating a
$3 billion deficit without raising taxes and, for the first time
in recent memory, the structural deficit is projected to be
eliminated.”
The biennial budget is required by law to be
passed prior to June 30th. The structural deficit left by the
Democrat-controlled- legislature and Governor Jim Doyle
two years ago was $2.5 billion. This existed because that
budget relied heavily on one time “stimulus” funds from
the Unites States government in addition to a $3 billion tax
increase without necessary spending cuts.
“I made a commitment to the voters that I would
work to make government live within the ability of
taxpayers to pay for necessary services,” Mursau said. “I
voted for this budget in order to fulfill that commitment
while ensuring spending cuts were measured and
effective in a manner preserving vital services for
Wisconsin families and businesses.”
Mursau fought for and inserted language into the
budget requiring each state agency to itemize all base
budget spending the same way local governments and
school districts do. In addition, base budget reviews will
itemize quarterly spending to find wasteful spending.
“It’s time to bring the light of day back to State
agency budgeting,” Mursau said. “Jim Doyle was wrong to
get rid of base budget review and this legislature has taken
a stand that the people deserve to see how their money is
being spent by the State.”
Holperin Votes “No” On Budget That
Shifts State Resources North to South
“The 2011
2013 state budget imposes
disproportionate spending cuts on northern Wisconsin
schools, communities and services, while providing
corporate and business tax breaks that small main street
businesses will never benefit from,” said State Senator
Jim Holperin in explaining why he voted “no” on the
budget.
“The new budget spends $1.1 billion more than
the budget we passed two years ago, but very, very little of
that new spending will find its way to northern Wisconsin,”
Holperin asserted. “One good example is road spending,
which will go up 15% statewide, yet every single local unit
of government in the 12th Senate District will have its road
aid cut or frozen. Much of new money is basically going
into freeway projects in Milwaukee County and
southcentral Wisconsin.”
Holperin also pointed to technical college aid
which will be cut by 30% over the next two years.
“Technical colleges have a proven record of effectiveness
in educating the students and training the workers our
Northwood's businesses need to succeed and thrive,” he
said. “This unprecedented reduction in state support will
drive up the cost of tuition, create waiting lists for many
courses and create additional obstacles to those who
want to improve their skills in order to find a better paying
job.” Holperin pointed out that the 12th Senate District has
no University campuses, but is served by three technical
colleges.

Mursau Comments On Concealed Carry To
Wisconsin Citizens
MADISON – State Representative Jeff Mursau (RCrivitz) made the following statement Tuesday regarding
passage of his legislation legalizing concealed carry of
firearms, tasers and knives in Wisconsin:
“Criminals in Wisconsin are going to have to start
asking themselves if their crimes are worth risking their
lives engaging someone maybe ready to protect
themselves,” Mursau said. “It’s time for Wisconsin law to
embrace the constitutional right to bear arms.”
Governor Walker is expected to sign the
legislation, leaving only Illinois and the District of
Columbia that prohibit any kind of concealed carrying.
“This is a great first step,” Mursau said. “I look
forward to the time in the near future when all Wisconsin
residents feel comfortable concealed firearms improve
our ability to secure ourselves, including people who
choose not to carry at all.”
Mursau’s bill legalizes open carrying of firearms
while at the same time licensing Wisconsin residents 21
years or older with no criminal record that satisfy proper
safety training.
“Our US and Wisconsin constitutions give us our
right to self defense through the right to bear arms,”
Mursau said. “This law gives us a way to reasonably
practice that right.”
The bill passed with bipartisan votes in both the
State Senate (24-9) and the State Assembly on Tuesday
(69-27).

Game bird brood observations can
be reported online
MADISON – Outdoor enthusiasts and hunters
can help the state monitor the brood production of a
variety of game birds including ring-necked pheasant,
ruffed grouse, turkey, bobwhite quail, gray partridge,
prairie chicken and sharp-tailed grouse by reporting
brood sightings to the Department of Natural Resources
via an online survey. The 2011 Game Bird Brood survey
period runs June 12 through August 20.
“This survey provides the department with an
estimate of game bird brood production during the
summer and is similar to a survey run by department
personnel,” said Brian Dhuey a DNR research scientist.
“Combined with other spring surveys and harvest
information it can help us determine the overall status of
game birds in the state.”
During the survey period, the DNR is asking
citizens to report the type of bird seen, the county it was
seen in, and the number of hens and chicks observed on

the online survey form. Observers are asked to not
include multiple observations if the same brood is being
seen repeatedly.
“Observations can be recorded at the end of every day or,
for times when you do not have access to the Internet and
would like to keep track of your observations, a tally sheet
(pdf) has been provided to help record sightings,” says
Dhuey.
During the summer of 2010, citizens reported
950 observations of wild turkey, ring-necked pheasant,
ruffed grouse, prairie chicken, sharp-tailed grouse, gray
partridge and bobwhite quail broods. The most frequently
observed game bird species were wild turkey (765
observations) and ruffed grouse (117 observations).

The siren at MaKajawan
'
The Boy Scout Camp of MaKajawan in Pearson is
in operation from early June through mid August. They
utilize a siren to direct their Scouts during emergency
drills when camp is in session. If you happen to hear it go
off, please disregard it. The siren is tested every Monday
afternoon at 5:00 pm, so you will most likely hear it at that
time.

Upgrade job skills with fall
classes at Nicolet;
New online application now available
Anyone interested in upgrading their job skills,
training for a new career, or starting on a bachelor’s
degree is encouraged to enroll in Fall Semester classes at
Nicolet College.
“With the job market being what it is, having the
right set of skills is critical for landing a job, keeping a job,
and moving up in a job,” said Nicolet College President
Elizabeth Burmaster. “Every academic program at Nicolet
is focused on providing students with those exact skills.”
In recent years the college has also concentrated
on creating more options for students who need to juggle
family and job responsibilities. “That increased level of
flexibility, whether it’s through online, evening or weekend
classes, has opened the door to a college education for
many students,” Burmaster added.
Fall Semester classes start Wednesday, Aug. 24.
The college has also launched a new online
application form that’s designed to make it cheaper and
easier for students to apply for admission, said Susan
Kordula, director of Admissions and PK-16 Pathways.
“By applying online, students will save the $10
processing fee that comes with submitting the paper
application,” Kordula explained.
Students will also be able to complete the online
application from any computer with an internet
connection, eliminating the need to travel to the
Rhinelander campus to complete this step of the
enrollment process.
To apply online, click the Apply Now link at the
bottom of the Nicolet homepage at nicoletcollege.edu.
Kordula added that several classes and programs are
filling up quickly and that anyone interested in attending
Nicolet in the fall should begin the enrollment process
promptly.
Nicolet offers more than 60 different associate
degrees, diplomas and certificates along with a University
Transfer Liberal Arts program where students complete
the first two years of a bachelor’s degree.
New programs recently created at the college
include the two-year Architectural Technology associate
degree and the one-year certificate in Digital Media Arts.
Other programs include Business Management,
Administrative Professional, Accounting, Culinary Arts,
Early Childhood Education, and Barber Cosmetology.
Along with nine different health occupations
options, the college also has programs in the trades that
include Building Trades-Carpentry, Welding, and
Automotive Technician.
Nicolet is also the only technical college in the
state system to offer a two-year associate degree in Land
Surveying.
For a complete list of programs, more
information about any of the programs above, or for help
finding the one that is right for you, call the Nicolet College
Welcome Center at (715) 365-4493, 1-800-544-3039, ext.
4493, TDD 365-4558 or 711 relay. Detailed information
about each program is also available on the web at

DNR shooting sports coordinator sets goal of 2,000 new
participants for 2011
Here's a thought for Wisconsin hunters: Picture
your kids' teachers, your hair stylist, grocery store clerk,
doctor, or neighbor kid enjoying their first hunt. You can
make it a reality and help preserve a Wisconsin tradition,
and the Department of Natural Resources will help.
It’s an exciting time to be in sports, rod and gun
and conservation clubs. Club members have a focused
sense of purpose and challenge -- find the next generation
of hunters. Think about recruiting participants from your
community. Reach beyond the local hunter education
class to other adult friends and their children.
Hunting offers an opportunity to meet new
people, exercise, connect with nature, spend quality time
with family and friends, and have the opportunity to bring
home high quality food. Let's share it and see if we can
introduce hunting to at least 2,000 new people this year. I
know a lot of hunters who want to help, and I think we can
do it.
The reality facing hunting in Wisconsin and other
states is the majority of participants are Baby Boomer
generation, marching through middle age into their 60s
with reduced participation in the more recent generations.
The gradual loss of the hunting population threatens to
reduce the relevance of hunting to our strong
conservation community.
In the challenge there is also opportunity -- all
those baby boomers also represent an army of qualified
mentors for the next decade. Wisconsin citizens recognize
the importance of hunters to conservation in our state and
they strongly support us. It’s up to us as hunters – as well
as business organizations, youth groups, churches and
neighborhood organizations -- to make sure that great
tradition continues.
A good way to introduce people to hunting is a
Learn to Hunt event. Nearly 1,000 joined a Learn to Hunt
turkey event this past spring. If your group hosted an
event, make sure you send in the final roster to the DNR at
Learn to Hunt Coordinator LE/8, PO Box 7921, Madison,
WI, 53707.
The processes and application forms sponsors
need to organize a Learn to Hunt event are available on the
DNR website. Sponsors should work closely with the local
wildlife biologist or warden when planning an event, and
ensure at least one of the event instructors is a certified
Hunter Education Instructor. Remember, this opportunity
is open to novice hunters of all ages. Consider planning an
event for parents who don’t hunt and include their
children.
Mentors are screened by the DNR using
background checks at least two weeks before the hunt.
There is also a reimbursement program through which
groups can receive $25 per novice hunter to help cover the
costs of hosting a learn-to-hunt event. If you are interested
in hosting an event or have any questions about LTH, see
the DNR website: or contact Warnke at the number below.
The DNR initiated the Learn to Hunt program in 1998 to
provide novice hunters of all ages opportunities to
experience a hunt with an experienced hunter. It does
involve classroom instruction and field work before an
actual hunt. More than 3,000 novice hunters in the past
two years have gone to a Learn to Hunt event. In addition
to turkey, the program also includes small game,
pheasant, wild turkey, waterfowl, bear, and deer.

Lakewood Assisted Living
“Live Life With Confidence”
Assisted living allows frail seniors, who are unable to stay at
home but do not need 24-hour skilled nursing care, to move into a
residential setting with services designed to meet their needs.
Residents can create an individualized care program that changes as
their needs change, allowing older Americans to age in place. In
addition to being less expensive than skilled nursing care, assisted
living provides residents with private apartments rather than an
institutional setting. Care and services are delivered with an emphasis
on maintaining an individual's independence, dignity, and privacy.
Lakewood Assisted Living is located in a rural setting with lakes,
rivers, streams, and a beautiful National Forest close by, giving you the
feeling of being “Up North”. If this is the type of setting you are looking
for then give us a call to set up a personal walk through of the home.
Please call 715-276-1680 to set up an appointment today.

Wabeno D.A.R.E. kids tour Forest County Jail
The 5th grade students at Wabeno Elementary concluded their D.A.R.E. program with a field
trip to Crandon. On May 31st, the students toured the jail and visited the Community Center.
The students would like to recognize Sheriff John Denney, Mary Sue Engebretson, and other
officers for providing a cook out and letting them tour their facility. The students would also like
to mention Ron Eveland for providing the Community Center for the students to have fun and
celebrate the conclusion of D.A.R.E. The PLAY Organization purchased T-shirts for all the 5th
grade students and staff at the elementary school and also provided cake to celebrate this
accomplishment.

President presents Spanish class
advisor, Jodi Brownell a check for
$340.00 to help offset expenses
during the upcoming Spain trip.
Crandon Lions President, Larry Sommer, presented a check for $340.00 to
Spanish class advisor, Jodi Brownell. The check was the result of class members doing
trash pickup along Highway 8 west of Crandon. The Lions Club challenged the Spanish
class to do the trash pickup in exchange for $20.00 a bag to go toward their trip to Spain
expenses. A total of 17 bags were picked up.
With an earlier donation, the Lions Club donated a total of $890 to the class
members going on the Spain trip this June.
The Lions membership wishes a safe and informative trip to the students and
await an interesting presentation of the trip results at a future Lions Club meeting.

Crandon Lions
President presents scholarship
awards to Jordan Falci (left)
and Schyler Schultz (right).
The Crandon Lions Club presented two $1,000 scholarship awards at the recent
senior banquet.
The recipients are Jordan Falci and Schyler Schultz. Jordan will be attending
Nicolet College.
Schyler will also be attending Nicolet College this fall and planning to attend UW
Milwaukee later.
According to Lion President Larry Sommer this is the first year that the Gerald
Jacobson Memorial Scholarship Award has been increased to $1,000. The Lions members
realize that the cost of education continues to rise and that raising the amount of the award
now and in the future would benefit the students. This was made possible because of the
tremendous support the community has given the Lions fund raisers. They include
Summerfest, Winterfest, Kentuck Days and Art in the Square. 100% of the money raised in
these events is given back to the community in various ways including the Annual
Scholarship Awards.
All of the Lions members wish much success to all graduating seniors.
