KATE MIDDLETON (U)
MODERN MARVELS
WATERPROOF (U)
Although she’s set to marry England’s Prince
William in “the wedding of the century,” Kate
Middleton is an unlikely choice for a royal bride
since a commoner hasn’t married an heir to
the throne for 350 years. But while she may
lack royal blood, she has another advantage -- a
family history of ambition and determination that
has propelled the Middletons from the depths of
a British coal mine to Windsor Castle. We look
at how Kate’s drive has helped her to survive
paparazzi hounding, nasty media nicknames,
and a humiliating public break-up. And now
she’s getting married to her very own Prince
Charming.
Running time: 54 mins
DRAMA/FANTASY
HEYDAY (U)

their house is quarantined, Terry conjures up a
hotel world to keep his fears at bay, complete
with spy, mystery and romance fantasies.

Deidre Gillard-Rowlings, Mark McKinney, Gabriel Hogan

protect ourselves against the very element that
keeps us alive – water. With water covering 75%
of the Earth’s surface, it’s no wonder we struggle
to stay safe and dry. We fight against ferocious
weather and floods with state-of-the-art roofing,
wraps, tarps, tunnels, clothing, boats, and much
more... devising extreme tests to probe the
limits of our modern waterproof technology.

Fatso is owner of one of the worst takeaways in
the capital. Although his heart’s in the right place,
his addiction to gambling means that keeping
his head above water is a daily struggle. Quite
aside from addressing the problem of his rapidly
spiralling debts, Fatso doesn’t endear himself

THE SECOND INSTALMENT
OF THE EPIC HOBBIT
TRILOGY, THE HOBBIT: THE
DESOLATION OF SMAUG
starts to get into the thick
of the action as the dwarves
(with hobbit and wizard in
tow) resume their quest to
free Erebor, continuing from
the events of the previous
film An Unexpected Journey.
Only eight minutes
shorter than its predecessor,
the film is a whopping 161
minutes long but justifies
its length with stunning
visuals and action-packed
sequences. Like the first
Hobbit movie, The Desolation
of Smaug also proved a
box office hit, grossing over
$953 million worldwide and
making it the 24th highestgrossing film of all time.
Sir Ian McKellen, Martin
Freeman, Richard Armitage,
and a whole host of other
notable actors reprise their
roles from An Unexpected
Journey, accompanied by
new faces Evangeline Lilly
and Lord of the Rings firm
favourite Orlando Bloom who
make their first appearances
in this trilogy. Benedict
Cumberbatch also produces
a masterful display as the
voice of Smaug, the dragon
and primary villain, as well
as the Necromancer of Dol
Guldur.
Shot and produced
simultaneously with An
Unexpected Journey, this
film was meant to be the
conclusion of the originally
planned two-part adaptation
of The Hobbit, but the scale
of the project necessitated
the birth of a third movie, The
Battle of the Five Armies. It
is expected to hit cinemas in
December 2014.

A bravado performance from Eva Green
stands out as the highlight alongside
the rippling muscles of Spartan warriors
300: Rise of an
Empire
liberally across the screen.
It follows the plight of the
great Athenian general
Themistocles as he tries to
stem the hideous tide of
Xerxes’ infinite forces.
Vengeance and glory are
the two underlying themes of
the movie. It is the ambitious
drive of the beautiful but
deadly Artemisia portrayed
by Eva Green that pushes
the plot to its climactic
peak, while Themistocles is
trying his best to negotiate
and outmanoeuvre the
Persian navy, with romance
and eroticism interspersed
between vendettas that
complicate things. Derived
from the as-yet-unreleased
Frank Miller graphic novel
Xerxes. Rise of an Empire
is a story that stretches out
in contrast to 300’s more
inward progression. Violence
and brutality are more
explicit this time around.
Apparently, the movie is
out well ahead of the book
and the author affirms that
it is “more complex” than its
predecessor.
The images illustrated
are so rich and amusing,
whereby storytelling
becomes so assured that
most viewers could keep
up without any dialogue.
Zach Snyder delivers in
his now-signature style
that will please fans of
Watchmen and Sucker
Punch, while making every
guy watching it sign up to
the gym.

They say that love is blind - but nobody
ever said that it was also crazy,
stupid, and everything in between
IT IS SAID THAT MARRIAGE
IS THE TOMB OF LOVE.
While trying to make up their
minds for something sweet
before heading home, Cal,
who has grown complacent
in his marriage chooses a
dessert. His wife, however,
prefers a divorce. Cal seeks
to appease his sorrow in an
upscale bar, but the entire
bar scene is foreign to him
and Cal has no idea how to
be single. Enter a certified
sexual virtuoso, Jacob, who
seems to leave every night
with the woman of his choice.
He decides to take Cal under
his wing by guiding him in
the ways of courtship. In a
determined attempt to even
the score with Emily, Cal sets
out to score with as many
women as he can. Crazy,
Stupid, Love deals primarily
with infidelity and the art of
seduction. With understated
sympathy, the film plays with
the adult ambivalence and
disappointment that most
comedies are too cautious to
explore.
It’s not just Cal and
Emily’s hearts that are on the
line. At home, their 13-year
old son, Robbie is pining
hopelessly for his 17-yearold babysitter, Jessica who
has set her sights a little
higher. On the advice of
her classmate, she captures
naked photos of herself to
send to Cal. The romantic
comedy and its stellar cast
play out each of the title’s
three words to brilliant effect.
It is a funny movie that
tiptoes into serious adult pain
and dilemmas in teenage
love. Ironically, Robbie

Crazy,
Stupid, Love
appears more concentrated
and adroit than his dad when
it comes to pursuing a “soul
mate”. In its headlong pursuit
of laughs, the screenplay
runs by several opportunities
to explore its characters in
greater depth. It conjures
up the bittersweet magic
of love. It is realistic and
restorative at the same time.
It belongs to the kind of film
that makes you want to call
someone the minute it is
over, to trust love one more
time – one last time.
