We’ll bring it to you Atlantic City Library To Go gives community a library experience outside of our two locations The Atlantic City Free Public Library is open seven days a week in an attempt to make our services as accessible to the entire community as possible. However, even if you can’t make it to the Main Library or Richmond Branch Library, you can still enjoy many of the same features that are offered at those two locations. The ACFPL has created an extension of its services called Atlantic City Library To Go, where we are “bringing your library to you.” More than half a million Opening of military vet exhibit set for May 22 You are invited to the unveiling of an Atlantic City military veterans photo exhibit from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, May 22, at the All Wars Memorial Building. The official ceremony, featuring special guest speakers, will begin at 11 a.m. The exhibit, presented by the City of Atlantic City, Atlantic City Public Library, Kenneth Hawkins Post 61 — American Legion and African American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey, will consist of roughly 100 photos featuring military vets who were stationed, served or lived in Atlantic City. Join us in May as we celebrate Asian Pacific American Month The Atlantic City Free Public Library has planned several special programs for May in recognition of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The mix of programs includes drawing classes for youths, Tai Chi for adults and a dance performance for people of all ages. All programs are free. The program schedule is: May 7, 14, 21, 28, at 3:30 p.m.: Anime and Manga drawing classes for youths ages 8 to 16 — Explore the world of Asian drawing styles and animation known as Anime and Manga. Participants will work with professional cartoonist Joe Del Beato to create a studio-ready animation cell. This program is for youths ages 8 to 16. May 9, 16, 30, at 10 a.m.: Tai Chi Series — International Tai Chi Master Xiu E. Yao, who has more than 25 years of experience in teaching and studying Tai Chi/Qi Gong, will be the instructor and lead you through this series. This is for people of all ages. May 9, at 2 p.m.: Vongku Pak’s Korean Drum and Dance Troupe at Dante Hall — This performance will showcase the different possibilities while playing the Sulchanggo, the distinctive Korean drum which has become a signature instrument in traditional music. Group founder Vongku Pak has been featured in tours of Europe and CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 Do you have game? Or, more specifically, do you have access to hundreds of video games? If you’re an Atlantic City Free Public Library cardholder 13 years of age or older, you will have an incredible selection to choose from in June when the library rolls out a video game collection. The collection, which will be located on the Main Library’s first floor near the DVD section, will consist of approximately 240 games for the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 consoles. Many popular games will be available to you, including Mario Kart, Madden NFL ’09, Prince of Persia, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Call of Duty. Cardholders will be able to borrow up to two video games at a time for three days. There is no charge to take out the games. The library is purchasing games that have the following Entertainment Software Rating Board ratings: EC (Early Childhood), E (Everyone), E10+ (Everyone 10 and older), T (Teen) and M (Mature). Adults may borrow games from the entire collection, while young adults can check out games except those with the M rating. If you would like the CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 Library to serve as co-sponsor for Chicken Bone Beach series The Atlantic City Free Public Library has developed a strong reputation as a place to listen to some of the area’s top jazz artists. This summer, the library is partnering with a wellknown organization that has garnered regional and even national attention. The Chicken Bone Beach Historical Foundation Inc., with the Atlantic City Free Public Library, will present the 10th Jazz on the Beach Concert Series on Thursdays at Kennedy Plaza. The Chicken Bone Beach Series began in 2000 and featured nine shows each summer until 2008, when it had four. The library’s participation will help the foundation offer six concerts on the first three Thursdays of July and August. Call (609) 345-2269, ext. 3115, for information. Youth Summer Reading Program, Adult Book Club launch in June Pictured is the library’s 2009 award-winning entry for Best Program Announcement. NJLA honors library with ’09 PR award The New Jersey Library Association has named the Atlantic City Free Public Library a winner of a 2009 Public Relations and Marketing Award. The library won its award in the Best Program Announcement category. The winning entry was a 4-by-8-inch rack card that the library used to promote its Family Fun Festival in 2008. Contest entries were judged on effectiveness of message for the target audience, originality, creativity of design and aesthetic appeal. Don Latham is the library’s Public Information Officer, and he worked with the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority and Hayes Mindish Inc. on the rack card. This is the second straight year the library has received an NJLA Award, winning in 2008 for Best Newsletter. The award winners were honored at the annual NJLA Conference on April 28. THE ATLANTIC CITY FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED MAY 25 FOR MEMORIAL DAY The Atlantic City Free Public Library will continue its long-standing tradition of offering Summer Reading Programs for youths and teens — and it will start a new one by debuting an Adult Summer Book Club. The Summer Reading Program launch party is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 30, in the Main Library meeting room. Children and teens (ages 13 to 17) are invited to this party, which will include stories, games, refreshments and special guests. Youths who sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the party will get to take home a free book. The children’s Summer Reading Program theme is “Be Creative” and it’s “Express Yourself” for teens. And, due largely to the interest generated by our reading program for youths, the library will hold its First Adult Summer Book Club. The library will hold a special kickoff party beginning at 12 p.m. Monday, June 15, in the Main Library meeting room. Discuss some of the different titles you would like to see included on the book list, meet others who love to read and discuss books and enjoy some light refreshments and music. The group will meet again at 12 p.m. Monday, July 13 in the meeting room to discuss the books they have read. The final Adult Book Club meeting will be 12 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27. Club members will share their thoughts on the books they have read and what they thought of the book club. There will also be a prize drawing at the final meeting. By having a presence in various locations and offering many of our important resources available online, it can dramatically increase the number of people who benefit from our services.” One of the main features of Atlantic City Library To Go will include library drop-off sites, where we provide a mini-display of books and information, at various buildings around town. The library has drop-off sites at two senior residences – New York Avenue Apartments and Altman Terrace – and plans to expand that number in the future. The A+ Teen Space Project is funded by the Atlantic City Free Public Library, a service of the City of Atlantic City, the South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative and the New Jersey State Library, which is responsible for the coordination, promotion and funding of the New Jersey Library Network. The Atlantic City Free Public Library Teen Space, which is scheduled to open in September 2009, is coming together quickly thanks to the help of many — including teenagers from throughout the community. You can make informed decisions using Consumer Reports and other resources It is more important than ever to make wise, financial decisions given the state of the economy. To do so, you will want to have as much information as possible at your disposal so you can make choices that will help you maximize your dollars. The Atlantic City Free Public Library offers some great resources if you want to do research before spending your money — and one of those resources is Consumer Reports. Consumer Reports contains a wealth of useful information. From current product evaluations to package and labeling scams, the magazine provides everything needed to make intelligent purchasing choices. Find out if that used car is a “lemon.” Is the expensive vacuum cleaner really better than the cheaper one? Which laundry detergent cleans best? Is one brand of olive oil better than the other? These and similar queries are easily answered by reading Consumer Reports. Pick up a copy of the magazine or read it online the next time you visit the library; or, read a copy of it online from home as long as you have an Atlantic City Free Public Library Card.
