PIANIST/COMPOSER CHRIS SCHULZE
“Funky, jazzy, rocking, rhythmic, soothing, versatile bomb!”, is how one listener describes
the music of composer Chris Schulze who was writing music on piano keys since he was a
toddler.
"I watched my brother Peter play the piano, who, was home-ridden due to hemophilia. That
piano was his constant companion. He lived til he was nine years old, when angels gently
took him one night. At the age of four, I climbed on his piano seat and carried his memory
forward. And that was the start of it all.”
It was Schulze's mother, who was deaf since a strep infection robbed her of her hearing at
the age of six, who encouraged his interest in music - though having never once heard him
play! "She felt my inspiration and she understood it; in fact she was the one who talked my
dad into giving me lessons.".
Schulze's constant exposure to music in the house inspired him through his teen years,
when Schulze subsequently discovered he had the ability to play by ear the popular songs
he heard on the radio – a blessing in that, although formal instruction had given him the
basics on chords and fingering, he had always had trouble reading notes.
It wasn’t long before Schulze began to “hear” his own music, and not only the piano, but
whole orchestrations. It was then just a matter of figuring out how to bring those songs to life
without conventional notation; a problem solved with keyboard workstations, which became
his method of composing and orchestration.
In 1994, Hawaii’s Audy Kimura assisted Schulze in recording a few of his compositions,
giving him his first exposure to a studio setting. Inspired, Schulze created his own music
studio and began composing for the international shows produced by Kyle Nakamoto of
Hawaii Skin Diver TV, which expanded his musicality into a more international sound.
Which leads to Schulze’s current album, Soundwaves. Every track on it takes the listener to
a different realm of composition, and is indicative of Schulze's musical upbringing and
diverse influences. Look for Chris Schulze's music in upcoming film and TV placements! --For more info or to schedule an interview, please contact Chris directly at [email protected] or (808) 7777012
