Too often members chose positions for the wrong reasons, Others chose for all the right reasons. Give this some thought: The gateway to our success is our members. What kind of member are You? LEADERSHIP First you have to believe In an ideal, a philosophy of life, a code of conduct, a personal obligation. To work with others towards a common goal; Then you must be willing to learn From the ground up; GRAND PRESIDENT’S TRAVEL ITINERARY AHEPA Family Excursion to Turkey, Cyprus & Greece May 2-14, 2016 AHEPA Family Capitol Hill Day May 25, 2016 Washington, DC District 17,20,21 & 22 Convention June 23-25, 2016 Anaheim, CA District 2 Convention June 9-12, 2016 Tampa, Florida 2015-2016 Daughters of Penelope Grand Lodge National Convention July 24-30, 2016 Las Vegas, NV 1 To do what needs to be done and do it willingly, with a good spirit. Look around you…the world is full of needs that must be met – Never ending, always something more to do; Often no thanks but the knowledge that the job’s well done. Then it’s time to share what you have learned with others, Not with commands, but with a hand outstretched to help and teach. Not “Go and work!”, but “Work with me, and we will change things!” Human nature is what it is, and there will always be Those who make the effort, not to help another, But for personal gain or the world’s acclaim; Make it your aim to look beyond them, work around them And by your example show the joy that comes from The smile of a child, the prayers of the old in thanks, The satisfaction of having made a difference in someone’s life. True leadership teaches, encourages, heals, inspires and leaves the world a little better. As always with Love in Theta Pi, Connie Pilallis Grand President 2 Save the Date for the Grand President’s Testimonial! 3 Growth and Expansion - Members Matter by Jan Spanos, Grand Vice President Growth and Expansion Chairman As we look at our Order of the Daughters of Penelope, can we truly say that we are delivering to our respective communities the attention that they need, as is dictated by our Mission Statement? Are we as individuals able to say yes to all of the components of the Mission Statement? In a closer look at ourselves and our Chapters, we discover that the answer to the question regarding our Mission Statement most often results in an overwhelming NO! Obviously the next question would be WHY? We can no longer do business as usual. We must be open to change that many of our members can bring to the table. If we extend our hand and open our minds to the world of possibilities, that our members bring to the table, we can and will become the Daughters of Penelope that was envisioned by Alexandra Apostolides, our founder, and that is outlined in our Mission Statement. MEMBERS MATTER! What each of person, VETERAN member or NEW, can do to enhance our Order is amazing! Growth is dependent upon our ability to allow room for the changes that surround us. The needs of many (our communities) are not able to be met by the few (our current membership). As our community age demographics reflect greater needs, conversely our memberships are not increasing expotentionally to meet those needs. The time is NOW! Now is the time to consider what we need to do to increase our membership and along with those increases what we can do to maintain the interest of both the NEW member and the VETERAN member. Have we looked beyond our own Church communities? Have we extended an inviting hand to Christian women beyond the Orthodox faith? Do we encourage our Maids of Athena to become dual members at age 23? Do we invite our scholarship recipient’s to join our Order? Are we embracing our female military active and veteran to become part of this amazing international sisterhood? Are we really doing all that we can individually and collectively to enhance our membership? The answer at this time most resoundingly is no we are not. NOW is the time to bring in NEW members of all Christian faiths; add our 23 year old Maids of Athena, include our military women, and most importantly advocate for national membership via our web-site which is an important tool to keep in mind. Let us invite them to enhance our current actions and to aid in developing NEW projects as well as community awareness and outreach. In the words of President Abraham Lincoln “The best way to predict the future, is to create it.” Let’s begin to CREATE the future of the Daughters of Penelope, following the ideals set by our Founder, let us look at our communities and let them see us. Let them see us in the action that supports the major initiatives in which we so strongly believe: Action Against Family Violence; Action Against Bullying, Action For Women’s Health; Action Against Human Trafficking. Let’s encourage new friend, neighbors, co-workers to become part of the Daughters of Penelope and the Ahepa Family. 4 Growth and Expansion - Members Matter by Jan Spanos, Grand Vice President Growth and Expansion Chairman TODAY ask yourself, “What should or could I be doing to help increase membership in my Chapter”? DO NOT feel unqualified to ask that new acquaintance that is a woman in your book club, your knitting circle, the “dugout mom” at the little league or soccer games in your neighborhood to join us, because each of us can and do make a difference. It is up to each of us to become involved…..you and I are members of this most incredible international women’s organization and can lead by example….unravel the secret of who we are, roll up your sleeves and take the lead. Quit hiding your strengths and share your love for our Order. Remember the childhood story of Thomas the Train trying to climb the hill?.....I think I can, I think I can, I think I can and finally, I KNOW I CAN! You and I are the answer. Together, we are the Daughters of Penelope! Together WE CAN Aspire to Keep Alexandra’s Dream Alive! 5 Eva Jean Fomalont Grand Secretary Spotlight on District’s Buckeye 11, Grainfield 14 and Delta 16 Memories are more valuable than Things and these District are making memories! Living in New England gave me the opportunity to visit my Districts and several of their chapters. District 7: Held a conference in Bridgeport, Ct and I had the opportunity to meet the Sisters in District 7. What was so enjoyable was that this conference was a joint conference with their Ahepan brothers. I find this so important to combine the Districts and hope that we can do this at all Districts. I will also be attending an event in Norwich, CT April 16 with a luncheon and tour of the Slater Memorial Museum, and attending District 7 Convention, May 27 in Newport, RI. District 8: Held a Tri District Conference in Worcester, MA October 3, 2015, which was attended by many of our Sisters from the three Districts and we were honored to have Grand President Connie Pilallis and Grand Vice President, Jan Spanos visiting with us. We held a combined initiation, 3 from District 8, and 2 from District 9, all initiated by our Grand President. Of special note for me personally, my daughter became a Daughter of Penelope that day. I visited all the chapters in District 8. District 9: Visited District 9 many times trying to help them to grow their District. District 9 holds many functions with their Ahepan brothers and they have the support system of the Ahepa family. I am continuing to help them will be attending their special awards dinner April 10. Also invited to their District Convention May 13 and so looking forward to spending time with them. Our goal is to reinstate one chapter, open another chapter in Vermont and try to grow another chapter. It has been quite an amazing year for me, meeting so many people and learning from them. Although, I am over a 30 years member, this experience is like none other. Looking forward to continuing to help my Sisters and their Districts. In Theta Pi, Lili Respass, Grand Governor, Zone 1 8 Dorothea Williams Grand Governor Zone II Greetings Sisters! I was assigned by Grand President Connie Pilallis as Liaison to Capital District #3, Automotive District #10 and Hoosier District #12. It was a pleasure visiting these Districts, hearing about their accomplishments and projects that support the ideals of the Daughters and sharing new ideas and fellowship. District 3’s Mid-Year Conference was held in Fredericksburg, Virginia in March. I was amazed by all the activities that were planned throughout the District. District Governor Kathy Matrakas led well organized sessions. This District welcomes 19 new initiates (14 are from Helle Chapter #283) and 6 reinstatements. District 10’s Mid-Year Conference in Southgate, Michigan during November. District Governor Vaia Economou-Clifford should be proud of her accomplishments. District 10 welcomes 19 new members (12 are from Knossos Chapter #174) and 4 reinstatements to date. District 12’s Fall Workshop was held in November in Fort Wayne Indiana. District Governor Patricia Makarounas had prepared an exceptional powerpoint presentation about DOP national and district directives. District 12 welcomes 2 new members this year. I wanted to share with you some of these districts’ membership growth over the past few months. El Camino Real District 20 under the leadership of District Governor, Valerie Katsikis, has 14 chapters which covers southern California, Arizona, Hawaii and Las Vegas, Nevada. This district has a current membership of 386 which includes three new members, 12 reinstatements, and 39 life members. Their largest increase occurred over the last couple of months. They have carried on their hard work from last year when, at the National Convention, District 20 was recognized as the district with most new members. And they are still going strong! Golden Gate District 21 led by District Governor, Beverly Kennedy, has 11 chapters (covering Northern California and Reno, Nevada) and 582 members, including 12 new members, 13 reinstatements and 85 life members. This district has the distinction of having the first Daughters chapter, Eos #1, within its borders. Firwood District 22, one of the smallest districts within our order, is led by District Governor, Mary Pazeotopoulos. Although small, it has four chapters and covers Oregon and Washington. Its total membership is 152 which includes one new member (since the beginning of this year), one reinstatement and 21 life members. This district is noted for establishing the first three Maids of Athena chapters in the Ahepa family (Sparta #1 – Tacoma, WA; Alethea #2 – Seattle, WA; and Diana #3 – Portland, OR). Our Grand President Connie Pilallis has focused this year on “Renewal.” All three districts have been actively recruiting new members and helping former members “renew” their oath to the Daughters of Penelope. They have worked very diligently on this endeavor, from the largest to the smallest of these districts. I am proud to have the privilege of knowing these sisters and working with them over the past several months for the good of our Order. 11 Aspa Kostopoulos Grand Governor Zone V Citrus District 2 There were 2 celebrations of Epiphany: in Tarpon Springs and West Palm Beach how wonderful to be able to carry on the Orthodox celebrations. The Sisters have been working very diligently at their projects and fundraising events: A Day at the Horse Races, Casino, Fashion Shows, Pancake breakfast, Valentine Baskets, Wine tasting, bake sales, to name a few. Increasing the Maids Chapters to 4 and increasing their membership. Other events: Zumba, bowling, Festival of Tables, supporting St. Basil’s, Gift Auction, working at church festivals, Spring Luncheon. Reactivating the Maids Demetria 33 Chapter and increasing their own membership. (In District Order) 22 Citrus District 2 Submitted by Stella Sirks, District Governor I am so very proud of my sisters in District 2 and so very lucky to live in Florida and be so close to Tarpon Springs. Thousands of people gathered for Epiphany, it is truly a site to behold. The Tarpon Chapter sold food on the street and the night before hosted a beautiful dinner. The next day, I visited Tampa in celebration of the feast of St. John the Baptist, their church name day, and their chapter hosted a beautiful dinner. Boca Raton was the next stop, where the Sisters of West Palm Beach, FL. Lauderdale and host chapter Boca held a lovely meet and greet dinner. The following day, we celebrated yet another Epiphany in West Palm Beach. You have to love Florida’s January weather! I have had the wonderful opportunity to initiate and RE-NEW oaths to Sisters in New Port Richey, St Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Daytona and Tampa. Fundraisers have been fun and unique, from “A Day at the Horse Races”, to Western Casino Night, Fashion Shows, Pancake breakfasts, Valentine Baskets, cupcake sales, Fish Fry’s, flower sales, wine tasting, raffles, baby showers (to benefit unwed mothers), bingo and casino night to name a few. Proceeds have benefited scholarships, AVDA, Pace school for girls, Lupus Foundations, Alzheimer's, area schools with supplies, food, toiletries and even hospitals with the making of heart pillows for heart and breast cancer patients. Many chapters and individuals have donated money to “Limibitless Solutions” A nonprofit group of University of Central Florida students who have gifted children by producing prosthetic arms for children at NO cost to the families and they completely donate their time and talent to children across the world. I am also proud to say we now have 4 Maids of Athena Chapters in our district, thanks to the hard work of many people. I returned to Tarpon for the Greek Independence Day Parade and proudly walked beside our “Florida Grown” Grand President, Connie Pilallis. Matrakas, District Governor Our District 3 Sisters have been enjoying our work for our philanthropies and “renewing” our DOP Sisterhood. Our Mid-Year Conference and AHEPA Workshop #2 met in Fredericksburg, VA on March 12. We thank Mary Washington AHEPA Ch. 290 and President Danny Athanasaw for hosting us along with DOP Chapters: Harmonia, Helle and Antiklea for providing desserts and assisting with transportation of our GG Dorothea Williams. AHEPA SP John Galanis also attended. See first photo below. Alcmene Ch. 27 and Sisters from Antiklea Ch. 68 and Hermione Ch. 11 participated in the Maryland Greek Independence Day Parade held in Baltimore on April 3, 2016. Our Hellenic pride/civic responsibility was evident throughout the ceremonies. See second photo below. We look forward to the Washington Metropolitan Area 46th AHEPA Awards Program on May 15. This program has honored 1,559 graduating high school seniors and awarded $872,225 in scholarships. We also look forward to our annual AHEPA Family Capitol Hill Day on May 25, our District 3 Convention in Norfolk, VA on June 3-5 and the Supreme Convention in Las Vegas, NV in July. Our District 3 Lodge wishes everyone a Kalo Pascha/Kali Anastasi! 24 Yankee District No. 7 Submitted by District Governor Myrsini Papoutsis Dear Sisters, Our Annual Spring Conference theme of LIFE (Leadership, Inspiration, Focus and Education) was hosted by my home chapter and was successful. There was a coloring activity and how to successfully fundraise. Sisters attended a wonderful spring lunch and tour of the Slater Museum at the Norwich Free Academy School hosted by Norwich Chapter Lysandros 181. Sisters marveled at the beautiful Hellenic statues and artwork. Our convention was successful. To the sisters who ASPIRE to become Future Leaders of the Daughters of Penelope May they: 1. Have the grace and wisdom to act kindly, learning to distinguish between what is personal and what is not, 2. Be hospitable to criticism, 3. Never put yourself at the center of things, 4. Act not from arrogance but out of service, 5. Work on yourself, building up and refining the ways of your mind, 6. Learn to cultivate the art of presence in order to engage with those who meet you, 7. When someone fails or disappoints you, may the graciousness with which you engage be their stairway to renewal and refinement, 8. May leadership be for you a true adventure of growth! Photo of our conference group. 25 Northern New England District No. 9 Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont Submitted by: Nicole Wu On April 10, 2016, Nicoletta (Nikki) Moutsioulis was awarded the District 9 Pericles Award at an elegant dinner in Manchester, NH. She belongs to Ilios Chapter No. 51 and is a Past President. On the District Lodge, she served as District Secretary and District Governor. Nikki was a high school Business Teacher for 35 years. She was an active member of the National Educational Association (NEA) in New Hampshire and Manchester. She is a hard-working parishioner of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral. She has held positions of Sunday school teacher and Supervisor and Co-Chaired the annual Glendi Festival. She has sung in both Junior and Senior Choirs. Nikki has also served on the Parish Council as Secretary and President. Pericles was a well-known Greek statesman, orator and general of Athens during the Golden Age (480 BC – 404 BC). He coordinated the construction of many buildings of the Acropolis, including the Parthenon. He felt that all Athenians should be educated in philosophy, art, music and poetry. We were delighted to have in attendance Past Grand President Elaine Kevgas and our Liaison, Grand Governor Zone I Lili Respass. Lili expressed greetings from Grand President Connie Pilallis and offered her congratulations to Sister Nikki. Spring sprung in Toledo Ohio on March 5th when about 130 attendees enjoyed the remarkable hospitality of the Sisters of Dodona #24 and a delicious lunch prepared by the AHEPANS while engaging in the District’s Designer Purse Bingo Fundraiser. Dayton’s own Anna McCullough served as the Program Speaker and delivered an informative presentation on Truncus Arteriosus. The proceeds of this successful event will benefit the Charitable Projects of District #11, Truncus Arteriosus and the Daughters’ Buckeye District Scholarship. Not only can a special moment be captured in a photo, but in a 25-word story. The District’s Maids of Athena tackled Grand Vice President Jan Spanos’ February initiative and challenge by sharing their agape for the Daughters of Penelope. Preparations are under construction for the Governor’s Ball set for Saturday, May 14, Dayton Ohio, followed by the Buckeye District Convention on June 17-19, 2016, hosted by Middletown Chrysa #100 to close out an extraordinary year with a dynamic District. Charrie Regopoulos, Governor, Antoinette Geanneses, Secretary Buckeye District #11 Designer Purse Bingo Fundraiser District #11 Lodge with Anna McCullough, Program Speaker Table Display of Prizes 27 Hoosier District No.12, State of Indiana District #12 has been a busy district with much activity from our Daughters chapters throughout the state. Pleiades #50 continues to support the newly activated Maids of Athena Chapter Dionysia #141, incorporating outings throughout the year. Also, Pleiades chapter held its first virtual Bake Sale, proving to be a very successful money maker. Recently, the Daughters organized an outing/fundraiser for the movie premier of My Big Fat Greek Wedding Part 2, with proceeds benefiting the St. Nicholas Shrine. What a great turnout we had and yes…lots of laughing!!! I’ve had the pleasure of making my visitations throughout the Hoosier State, with visits to our Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Merrillville, and Hammond Chapters. The warmth and hospitality was much appreciated. Each Chapter donated to our District project which is Domestic Violence of Northwest Indiana. Our next big event will be our upcoming District Convention in Indianapolis, IN on June 11, 2016. We thank the Indianapolis AHEPA and Daughters Chapters for hosting this year’s convention. Looking forward to spending time with our Sisters and Brothers of the AHEPA organization and making it a success! Yours in Patricia Makarounas District Governor #12 Pleiades Chapter #50 at the premier of My Big Fat Greek Wedding Part 2 28 News from our Chapters! (In Chapter Order) 29 EOS Chapter No. 1, San Francisco, CA By: Marion Parashis A Past Presidents’ Luncheon was held on Sunday, February 28th, 2016 at the Basque Cultural Center in South San Francisco, Ca., chaired by a well-organized Sister, Sophia Fonti, and her EOS#1 group honoring Elias Tsiknis of the Golden Gate Pacific Chapter #150 and Elaine Makras of EOS#1. In attendance were District 21 Governors Beverly Kennedy and Bill Anton. Representing the Daughters were District 21 Lt. Governor Foula Vasilogiorgis (an EOS Sister), District 21 Secretary Mary Gavrilis, and District 21 Marshal Vaso Moulas (an EOS Sister and a recipient of a 25 year Pin). Also, Past National Penelope also holding the title of Past Chapter President and Past District 21 Governor, Mary Chicos, and Past Chapter President and Past District 21 Governor Sophia Eliopoulos were a sight to behold among us all. From the Ahepan District 21 Lodge, District Secretary Alex Mallas was present as well as Past District Governor, Past Chapter President and Ahepan Man of the Year Paul Eliopoulos and Past District Governor and Past Chapter President Jim Dariotes. Both Past Presidents of their Chapters, Elias and Elaine, were paid tribute for their outstanding loyalty and dedication to the Ahepan Family, and both respective Chapters felt emotional pride for their undying love and total support. The spirit in this beautifully decorated room was also highlighted by deserving pins and certificates received by Sisters and Brothers for years of service, namely the highest for the Ahepans; Peter Kireopoulos (Past Chapter President) and Peter Roosakos (Past Chapter President and Past District 21 Lt. Governor), 60 years of membership. For the Daughters in EOS, the exceptional recipients were Connie Panagotacos, 75 years and Ackie Argyres, a 65 year Sister, both Sisters having served as Past Chapter EOS#1 Presidents. Connie spoke of her love of Family and Friendships, and Ackie was heartfelt in her support and dedication for always attending the District and National Conventions with her parents beginning with her childhood years. Her memories brought many tears to the eyes of the audience. So many more deserving Sisters and Brothers received pins and certificates that day, too numerous to name. However, if this type of attitude continues, hopefully, it will affect the younger generation and EOS #1 and the Golden Gate Pacific Chapter #150 will gain new members, willing and able to continue to enforce the exceptional Ahepan Family goals of local and national philanthropy. What a magnificent, realistic world we can continue to create if we are allowed to further our Hellenic beliefs! Our Ahepan Family with all of our Brothers and Sisters can complete a multitude of life changing tasks if we can rid our surroundings of petty, unimportant, disrespectful convictions. EOS#1 and the Golden Gate Pacific Chapter #150 can be truly commended along with their District 21 area chapters for striving to work to promote the Ahepa Family Mission Statement and to encourage individual excellence from their members. Leaders such as Elaine Makras and Elias Tsiknis will not be forgotten, and may God bring us more Sisters and Brothers to continue to walk in their footsteps. 30 Past Presidents Luncheon Photos Past President Elaine Makras with Past President Elias Tsiknis 75 year Member - Connie Panagotacos-White 50 year members: Patricia and Demetria Aleck, Gari Katsanis, Mary Mires, Mary Morris and Mary Pappas (Daughter Lt. Delicious food and drink along with wonderful fellowship was followed by an exciting Chinese gift exchange. Chapter members completed a very successful fund raiser this fall from which the funds support local organizations. We have made significant strides this year. We donate annually to our local holiday empty stocking fund which supplies holiday meals to needy families. Our chapter provides personal items to the Safehouse Shelter for victims of domestic violence. We purchased a DOP Memorial Brick that will be laid as part of the Labyrinth at our local Botanic Gardens. Our chapter supports CLIMB Wyoming, which is a non-profit organization which trains and places low-income single mothers in careers that successfully support their families. We have also established a Daughter’s of Penelope scholarship which will support the education endeavors of a young woman attending Laramie County Community College. In February, Sisters Susan Cymek, Constantia Dedoulis and Georgeanne Patmios (left to right in photo below) represented Hermione in the “Feed the Hungry” community service project at St. George in Bethesda, MD, where they prepared and delivered food to a homeless shelter. In early March we hosted coffee hour at St. Sophia in Washington, DC and later in the month had our annual Bingo fundraiser and raffle drawing (photo below); proceeds will support Hermione philanthropy. We appreciate the support of all our members and honored three Sisters for their commitment and dedication to DOP with Certificates of Merit signed by Grand President Connie Pilallis. Sisters Helen Koustenis and Ann Patmios have knitted beautiful scarves and hats over the years, which we donated to charities like Children’s Hospital, the NIH Children’s Inn and the National Center of Children and Families. Sister Evelyn Lambros chaired very successfully the Bakeless Bake sale fundraiser for the past 6 years. Thank you very much, Helen, Ann, and Evelyn! Our philanthropic activities included support of the DOP and Grand President’s projects, knitted hats for the National Center for Children and Families, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, NIH Kollecas House at St. George in Bethesda, MD, St. Sophia, the Agape Foundation, IOCC fund for Greece, and the St. Nicholas Shrine in New York. Hermione is a participating member of the Greater Washington DC AHEPA/DOP Scholarship Committee for high school seniors and donated $1,140 for a Hermione award. We participated in the District 3 conference in Fredericksburg, VA in March and hope to attend the District 3 Convention in Norfolk, VA in early June. Our end of the year luncheon celebration will be on June 11th; hope you join us! In January we hosted our annual fellowship hour to raise money for the New Mexico Cancer Center. Sisters Daphne Tritle and Tina Bullock presented a check to the NMCC for which they were extremely grateful (Pic #2). In February, we again held our DOP Annual Heart Fund Luncheon raising money for the American Heart Association (Pic #1). This was a huge success. On February 19th, Sisters Daphne Tritle, Tina Bullock, Lukia Delos, Olga Lovato, and Martha MacKenzie attended the “Go Red” luncheon at the Albuquerque Hotel where we presented a check in the amount of $450.00 to the AHA (Pic #3). March has been a busy month. Not only did we host another fellowship hour, we met up with our AHEPA Chapter to discuss joint ventures in the near future. The annual AHEPA Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, May 14. Sister Tina Bullock works very closely with the AHEPA in planning this wonderful event. Proceeds from this event benefit the AHEPA Scholarship Fund and NM Military Order of the Purple Heart. Our local Chapter once again provided a beautiful Pascha card to St. George Greek Orthodox Church Community. This Easter card supports our Sunday School and all proceeds are donated to Sunday School. Sister Judy Allen, with our talented Sunday School Students provided the artwork. We have already ordered a case of the Orthodox Study Bibles for the Sunday School. Another visit to the AHEPA Housing is planned in late May. We so enjoy visiting with the senior residents. They look as forward to our visits as we do in visiting them. The St. George Parish Council as arranged to have the pews refinished and restored. Our DOP Chapter plans to donate $350 for a pew. Elections will be held in May for the forthcoming year. Our annual Appreciation Luncheon will be scheduled for June. 35 Dodona Chapter No. 24, Toledo, OH Connie Mynihan, Corresponding Secretary Dodona Chapter #24 has been in full swing this year, hosting a Designer Purse Bingo Luncheon Fundraiser. It was a smashing success with sisters from North Royalton, Dayton, Warren and Lakewood/Rocky River in attendance. Purses from Brahmin, Coach, and Michael Kors, were the prizes for our five bingo games. A Chinese auction also generated income for the Truncus Arteriosus and the DOP Buckeye District #11 Scholarships. Great food was provided and enjoyed by all. Our Chapter attended the opening of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 and followed with a nice dinner. Congratulations to the family of our fellow sister Tamera Fernandes, who traveled to Washington, D.C. to see her brother, Ed Byers receive the Medal of Honor. Thank you to Ed Byers and all of our military for your outstanding service for our country. Traditional Greek Pastries are being prepared by all of our members for our Annual Spring Bake Sale. This Bake Sale has increased every year and is pushing all of us to make more and more of the delicious pastries. We are now having mini workshops to complete larger production for some of the pastries. 36 Alcmene Chapter No. 27, Baltimore, MD On January 30, 2016, Alcmene Chapter #27 initiated 3 new members – (from left to right) Valerie Kohles, Angie Stavrakis, and Adrienne Hughes. This year’s ball included seven lovely young ladies. Debutantes are from area high schools and must be of Greek decent. Following the presentation, the Debutantes danced with their escorts, their presenters, and finally together, a traditional Sirto. Everyone joined in the celebration for remainder of the evening, dancing and enjoying delectable desserts. Proceeds from the ball benefit the DOP Scholarship Fund. Two $1000 scholarships are awarded to selected Debutantes who meet the qualifications of academic merit, service, and/or need each year. Our annual luncheon, called Penelope’s Café, was a fun event, featuring our signature frappe and our popular koulouraki contest. Our new knitting group has knitted well over 100 items for charity and we are also knitting baby blankets for the 40-day old babies at church. It’s a lot of fun too. The annual Spring Raffle was a success. We are looking forward to our annual Mother’s Day Flower and Gift Sale. This is year we will be selling items made by our knitting group. As we finish the year, we will be running the Greek Deli at our church festival and giving out scholarships. Looking forward to our annual luncheon and initiating more new members! Follow us on Facebook, Daughters of PenelopeBridgeport "Hermes" Chapter 41, District 7! We are now on Instagram under dopchapter41! 39 Pleiades Chapter No. 50, Hammond, IN Pleiades Chapter #50 hosted their first “Wine and Canvas” event on Friday, February 19th and is proud to announce that $1,200, a portion of the proceeds raised that evening, will be donated in support of the Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center of Methodist Hospitals campaign to secure the first mobile mammography unit in NW Indiana. An evening of laughter, wine and refreshments was enjoyed by all and guest speaker Dr. Anastasia Siatras, staff Radiologist at Methodist Hospitals provided valuable information. Most women today are busy not only working, but tending to home matters, family events and obligations and have a tendency to put off their own health care. The proposed mobile mammography unit will provide women in Lake and Porter Counties in Indiana with an opportunity to receive their annual breast screenings and state of the art mammograms right at their place of employment, state buildings, church affiliations or any other area where the mobile unit is parked. The mobile unit is capable of performing 3D screening mammograms and next day results. We were also thrilled to have special guests from the Grand Lodge attend; GG Aspa Kostopoulos and GG Lily Respass, plus Maids of Athena Grand President Deanna Socaris. Committee: Sisters Georgia Karnezis, Georgianne Glavas, and Sofia Damianos Pleiades Chapter #50 Showing off their paintings 40 Ilios Chapter No. 51, Manchester, NH Submitted by: Nicole Wu, Past President From L to R: Sisters Nicole Wu, Kathrine Mehos, Toula Barber, Rallitsa Kostakis, Chrysanthe Nagios, Michelle Kapos, Ginny Tsirimokos, Nikki Moutsioulis and Helen Pervanas. Greetings from the Northeast! In February, Sisters from Ilios #51 got together for a night of creating masterpieces at Muse Paint Bar. The title of our painting is “Majestic Mountain”. The event was planned by Sister Kathrine Mehos, a member of our newly-formed Activities committee. It was truly a fun night of laughter and, as we say, παρέα! Another addition to our chapter is the Philanthropic committee. Philanthropy is an integral part of our Sisterhood, and this committee was formed to concentrate more of our efforts in our immediate community. Members recently visited local nursing homes and reported how welcome and appreciated they felt. Some of our Sisters are also volunteering their time at an area soup kitchen. Sister Nikki Moutsioulis is the recipient of our District Pericles Award! Her devotion to the Hellenic ideals of charity, civic responsibility and philanthropy make her most worthy. A banquet will be held in her honor in April. We are gearing up for our District 9 Convention in May on the NH Seacoast. We look forward to meeting up with friends at the Supreme Convention in Las Vegas in July! 41 Antiklea Chapter No. 68, Richmond, VA Submitted by Shelia Demetriadis, Chapter Secretary Spring has sprung and we find ourselves in the middle of Great Lent, a time of spirituality, introspection, and good works. A major project the Sisters of Antiklea Chapter sponsor at this time is our Red Tent Project for Homeless Women. We collect women’s personal hygiene items to provide assistance and comfort to homeless women in our area. Our past collections were met with enthusiasm as a result of the generosity of our Cathedral community. The project will run from April 1 to April 22, the Friday before Palm Sunday. Speaking of Palm Sunday, our traditional tsourekia/koulourakia sale will take place on that day. The supply of tsourekia having been secured, our sisters gathered early on Saturday, March 26, to make the delicious koulourakia by hand. Teamwork makes the dream work! Several members attended the District #3 workshop that was held in Fredericksburg on March 12, where they accomplished much in preparation for the District #3 Conference to be held in June. After joining District #3 Lodge Officers for lunch at Travinia’s Italian Restaurant on April 2, President Sondra Sealine and several of our sisters traveled to Baltimore on April 3 in order to participate in the annual Greek Independence Day Parade. They marched alongside members of Baltimore’s Alcmene Chapter #27 and District #3 Governor Kathy Matrakas. What a fun and exciting day! As we move toward the Miracle of Easter, we wish everyone a Happy Easter and Kali Anastasi! 42 Leto Chapter No. 71, Fresno, CA Leto Chapter 71 of Fresno held their annual Christmas Party on December 6th, 14 members received their service year pins. Every year our chapter witnesses a Magical Metamorphosis between a dad and his daughter. Our typical Sunday church Dads- very formal, almost business like individuals, turn into crazy, fun Dads to win the hearts of their daughters. From the moment the men strut into the beautifully decorated event, they are here to be their little girl’s hero….and they do just that ….for this night is all about the Daughters, Granddaughters and Nieces! The girls enter the ballroom like a princess, in their prettiest dresses with their prince by their side. The night starts with a professional photo to capture the event, then inside the ballroom, the MOA are selling keepsake wristlets and a rocking DJ is spinning music to get all dancing. We break for an elaborate buffet dinner that our AHEPANS prepare and our SOP serves- Lamb Chops, Chicken Picatta, Spaghetti and Salad. Next there’s a full dessert bar of homemade cakes, cupcakes and cannoli’s. After more dancing, we have a raffle of gift baskets donated by our chapter, such as Jewelry and Makeup Baskets for the girls and a Basket of Loews products or a Beer Basket for the Dads. Finally, we finish off this wonderful event with a special Dad and Daughter slow dance….brings tears to my eyes. It is truly a night that Memories are Made. Sincerely, Cathy Kuehn The Winner of “The Dad with the most Daughters” The men competing for the “Top 3 Best Dad Dancers” 46 Alcmaeon Chapter No.167, Tampa, FL The Alcmaeon Chapter has been very busy. On April 10th, we partnered with our AHEPA brothers from the Peter N. As we have done each year in the past, Helle Chapter prepared and served at a local shelter on April 12th. During April, we also enjoyed an inspiration discussion with our parish priest, who takes time from his busy schedule each year during Great Lent to speak with us. Prior to the discussion our chapter attended the Compline Service together. On behalf of Helle Chapter, we wish all Sisters Καλό Πάσχα! The bingo luncheon was the perfect way to raise money for our chapter while at the same time having a great time together. Mary Rados held the luckiest cards announcing ‘Bingo’ almost every third game! Congrats to Mary! Donations in 2016 have not only included all the wonderful Ahepa and Daughters of Penelope foundations, we also gave to local organizations like Shari’s Promise to prevent child abuse. In addition to Shari’s Promise our chapter sponsored wounded veterans and their families to a much-needed three-day vacation this July to Ocean City, Maryland. These Vets will be police and military escorted to honor their services! For Easter we donated to a needy family with children, as well as extending to all the children who benefit at St. Jude’s children’s hospital. Our meeting attendance has been growing each month. We will combine this day with new member initiations! 56 Alethia Chapter No. 302, Columbia, SC Our chapter has had a busy year and the pictures below illustrate two of our favorite projects. In October, we held our annual winetasting event at a new venue, Vino Garage, in downtown Columbia. It was our most successful ever and proceeds went to support the flood relief effort to help in the recovery from the devastating floods we experienced less than two weeks prior. In December, we once again prepared Holiday food baskets for veterans and their families which included everything needed to prepare a traditional Christmas dinner plus a $25.00 gift card from a local grocery store so that recipients could add their own favorites. We received a large donation from our brother Ahepans to help, as well as food and monetary donations from chapter and community members also. We were able to do 24 baskets which we used as centerpieces for our Ahepa/DOP Christmas party and then delivered to the VA. They were very appreciative and reiterated to us that these baskets are much needed by the families who look forward to them each year. Delivery of VA Baskets 57 Kirki Chapter No. 313, Asheville, NC Submitted by Vicky Papakonstantinou, Chapter Secretary The Daughters in Asheville, North Carolina enjoyed a beautiful dinner at the Apollo Flame Restaurant with the local AHEPA members for Valentine’s Day. Father Michael Diavatis and Presbytera Nicole joined us in a night of fellowship and fun. Our chapter ladies cherish the opportunity to help these needy and deserving citizens in their time of need. We are so fortunate to have a District Governor who continues to support us and to communicate with us regularly. We have participated with the Board and staff of Penelope House on many of their fundraisers and activities. In October 2015 the DOP Chapter had it’s meeting at the Administrative Office of Penelope House and as is the tradition, each member brought at least one new Halloween costume for the resident children. We collected over 25 new and beautiful costumes at this meeting. In December 2015 our Chapter joined the local AHEPA Chapter by having a Christmas Dinner and party at the Shelter. A delicious dinner was prepared by the AHEPAN’s and we assisted in serving all the residents of the Shelter. Santa Claus made a surprise visit and thrilled all the women and children with a monetary gift for Christmas shopping. In February 2016 the DOP Chapter sponsored the Chocolate Martini Booth at the Penelope House 8th Annual Chocolate Festival which was attended by nearly 5,000 people. With the help of fellow AHEPAN’s we served free sample martini’s (donations to PH accepted) and sold Greek pasteries. Three of our members, Leesa Vrocher, Kathy Vrachalus and Kathryn Coumanis won trophies in the Chocolate Cook-Off. A joint project between Philoptochos and DOP was held in March 2016 “Show Your Love for Penelope House”. Parishioners and chapter members were asked to donate new underwear and sleepwear of all sizes, mens, womens and children. A collection box was placed in the Narthex of our Church for collection of these items. This project began the 1st of March and concluded at the end of the month. 61 Medusa Chapter No. 345, Hicksville, NY Submitted by Helen Trimes Esposito, Chapter President The Medusa chapter has been very active this year, adding 8 new members since September. We held our annual fundraiser, “A Masquerade Ball,” on March 4th at the Royalton Mansion in Roslyn, NY. Proceeds went to two charities, Ronald McDonald House NY – Greek Division, as well as the Guardian Angel Family Crisis Center in Glen Head, NY, a local organization for women in crisis and their families. It was a wonderful evening with a beautiful setting, delicious food, fantastic raffles, and great music that kept everyone dancing. It was even more special by representatives from both charities who shared a little about their organizations. After all the hard work of the fundraiser, we began to plan some purely fun events. We met one evening in March for drinks. In April we held a “Paint & Sip Pottery Night”. We brought out our creative side while enjoying a light supper, snacks, and a little wine too. Also in April, several sisters made the trip to St Basil Academy in Garrison, NY for Daughters of Penelope Day. The day included a service in the chapel, a tour, and time to chat with some of the children. We presented $25 gift cards for each of the 20 children in residence there. There was a lovely luncheon presided over by Grand President Connie Pillalis. 62 Eros Chapter No. 356 – New Port Richey, FL 2016 has been extremely active for us so far. In March we held our annual Baby Shower for Pasco Kids First program. We had an enjoyable afternoon out at Jimmy Ferrara’s Theater in New Port Richey, and a few days later welcomed 50 players to our St Patty’s Day Bingo, with proceeds going to our Chapter Scholarship Fund. We will be presenting 2 scholarships of $1000 this year, as well as an additional 2 scholarships in memory of our Brother AHEPAN Jimmy Koutsos. Representatives of Eros 356 marched with our banner in the Tarpon Springs Greek Independence Day parade, joining other members of the AHEPA family from throughout Florida. What a great feeling of belonging we get from marching in the parade! One of our main projects this year has been Pack-ASack, and we are proud to have provided weekend meals for 16 children at a local Elementary School for the whole school year. At the time of writing we are preparing for Casino Night, our main fundraiser. Last year we made over $13,000 for local charities, and hope to do even better this year. Baby Shower donations for Pasco Families First St Patty’s Day Bingo players! 63 Harmonia Chapter No. 366, Charlottesville, VA Submitted by Catherine Anninos, Treasurer While Harmonia Chapter is no doubt one of the smaller chapters in District #3, its twenty-one members take pride in reporting that it has been in existence for thirty-two continuous years. We began 2016 by making a monetary donation to our Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church. Our 2015 pot-luck dinner Christmas party was well attended by our Sisters and church parishioners. Admission (which included opportunities to win door prizes) and beverages were available by donation. The winner of the 50/50 raffle, a member of our parish, returned his earnings to the Chapter. Harmonia Chapter matched the income (less expenses) and donated $850 to our church. Our Chapter sent monetary donations during the 2015 holidays to the Emergency Food Network, the Toy Lift Charities, and to our Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church. The eighteen inches (!) of snow that fell in Charlottesville in mid-January delayed, but did not cancel, our Chapter’s participation in the city’s “Let Someone Fill Your Shoes” campaign. Parishioners of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church were most generous, and on the last day of the drive Chapter members delivered forty-seven pairs of shoes to a local shoe store. The shoes were eventually distributed by the Salvation Army to the homeless and people in need. During February, the Chapter collected towels and blankets from parishioners and friends. These items were delivered to the Charlottesville/Albemarle SPCA. On March 12, the Chapter sent two representatives (Eleni Heeschen, CoPresident, and Pam Stratos, Past President) to the District #3 Mid-year Conference in Fredericksburg, VA. Eleni, Pam, and their sister (Gigi Roberts, Co-President) used their late mother’s recipe to bake and donate 150 koulourakia to the host city. Their mother (Pauline Stratos) was a charter member of Harmonia Chapter #366. Our Chapter is continuing its participation in the Kroger Community Rewards program. We encourage Sisters, parishioners, and friends to link their Kroger Bonus Card to our Chapter’s account, thereby enabling our Chapter to earn rewards every time a linked Kroger Bonus Card is used. Our Chapter receives quarterly checks from Kroger. Once again our Chapter will be one of the charities working at the Fridays After Five events and/or concerts this summer on the downtown mall. Our “tip” earnings enabled our Chapter to send monetary donations in 2015 to the Avon Walk to End Breast Cancer, the Charlottesville/Albemarle SPCA, and the Emergency Food Network. The charities are selected by our Sisters and friends who work the events. Happy Easter / Kali Anastasi from Harmonia Chapter #366! 64 Phillia Chapter No. 380, San Diego, CA Phillia 380 in northern San Diego got the new year off to a fast start January 28 when they provided a gyro dinner complete with horiatiki salata and karidopita for the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Pendleton. In the auditorium filled with women of all ages, our guests listened with great interest to the speeches of experts and were briefed on various issues of legal, social and medical content. Chapter Helenos #432 hosted a "Family Picnic" in the spring which featured a delicious pasta dinner, games for all ages, Greek music and dancing. Future plans include visiting a Mexican orphanage, organizing more fundraisers and making the "Family Picnic" an annual event. 71 News from our Projects! 72 April is Sjögren’s Awareness Month Nearly 4 million people have Sjögren’s making it the 2nd most common rheumatic autoimmune disease and 90% of patients are women. The Orphanage takes in pre-teen and teen girls from social services where they end up following a Prosecutor’s order, aiming to protect the children from acts of severe abuse, violence, abandonment and parental neglect. Currently, it houses and cares for 29 girls aged 7-18. MELISSA was founded in 1921 and begun its operation with the care of orphan and destitute children from Pontos. In 1922, the Orphanage raised all the Greek children from the Orphanage of Smyrna, following the horrible Destruction of Smyrna. For the last 40 years, MELISSA, operates as a shelter for abused girls. The mission of MELISSA is to provide a warm home environment, feeding, clothing and medical care for the girls; Educational assistance; Opportunities for intellectual development through athletic activities, learning of musical instruments, dance and others; Personalized psychological support programs aiming at healing the emotional traumas of these girls and assuring their smooth re-integration to society during adulthood. MELISSA is a tender heart and a warm embrace for children who live in fear, alone, are abused, and neglected. Personnel and volunteers are all working together for the benefit of the children. Volunteerism is the only means to bridge the gap and cope with financial difficulties. MELISSA’s sources of income are state funding, sponsorships and fundraising. The acute recession in Greece for the 7th consecutive year resulted in dramatic reduction of income. The Orphanage experiences severe economic weakness, sometimes questioning even its own viability and existence, though it has survived World War II and Civil War. Both the Orphanage’s running expenses and the children’s needs are covered now almost exclusively by revenue generated from sponsors be it companies and individuals, which either donate money and/or goods and services. The generosity of people and organizations like the Daughters of Penelope is most appreciated and keeps the orphanage operational. MELISSA thanks dearly and sincerely The Daughters of Penelope for their generous heart and support. Last year, the money donated by the Daughters was used to purchase dozens of athletic shoes for the girls and food. MELISSA is hopeful that this kind support from the Daughters of Penelope will continue this year. Dr. Xanthe Vafopoulou President, Mycenae Chapter # 220, Toronto, Canada 75 END OF YEAR REPORT NATIONAL ARCHIVES Submitted by Chairman Tessie Bourdamis Dear Sisters, I wish to thank our Grand President Connie Pilallis for appointing me as your National D.O.P. Archives Chairman for another term. I continue to serve on the board of the Friends of the IHRC/A (Immigration History Research Center and Archives) of the Univ.of MN as a representative of our Daughters of Penelope and Greek-American community. The IHRC/A, which maintains and preserves our AHEPA/DOP historical records, just celebrated its 50th anniversary this past fall, and held a special exhibit and reception at the Elmer L.Andersen Library and Archival Center of the Univ.of MN. Both National AHEPA Archives Chairman Peter Dress and I were able to attend these festivities as representatives of our AHEPA family. The exhibit included displays of historical materials from various ethnic communities which have their collections at the IHRC/A. We were pleased to see some of our Daughters of Penelope oral history tapes on display in this special anniversary exhibit! Most recently, Brother Peter Dress and I had the opportunity to assist fellow brother AHEPANs Lazar (Larry) Odzak (author/historian/researcher) and Dean Vonetes, in connecting them with the IHRC/A Director and Head Curator in order to discuss and secure this archival center as a site to donate the vast collection of AHEPA related documents and publications gathered by the late Alfred Vonetes (Past Supreme Secretary and active AHEPAN). We are happy to report that this was a successful transaction, and this very important collection of AHEPA family history was recently accepted by the IHRC/A, and will subsequently be processed and added to our existing AHEPA family collections. I continue to encourage and thank all those sisters who help maintain, preserve, and record the history of their chapters and districts for future generations to come. I extend best wishes for a very successful and productive national convention in this exciting city of Las Vegas. Yours in Theta Pi, Tessie Bourdamis Natl.D.O.P. Archives Chairman 76 Saint Nicholas National Shrine: National Project DAUGHTERS OF PENELOPE SAINT NICHOLAS NATIONAL SHRINE FUNDRAISER 77 Executive Summary The Daughters of Penelope play an important role in the community. This year the Daughters of Penelope will be focusing on raising funds for the rebuilding of the St. Nicholas Shrine as a National Project. Always Remember, Never Forget The horrific events of September 11, 2001 have touched all of us in some way. Some more personal than others but, none the less the destruction that took place in New York City, Washington, DC and Pennsylvania will be embedded in our minds and hearts forever. St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church was founded in 1916 by Greek American Immigrants and stood for eight-five years. Serving the Greek Orthodox faithful and also providing non-Orthodox with a quit space to pray, think or light a candle before going off to work at the WTC. With the collapse of World Trade Center Tower Two, St. Nicholas Church was the only house of worship destroyed that day. We were all overwhelmed, shocked and in disbelief on that day. However, out of the ashes of the World Trade Center, amongst the rubble, stood a cross giving us hope and faith. As a DOP Family, we can stand together in Christ in helping to rebuild St. Nicholas at Ground Zero. Rebuilding St. Nicholas National Shrine at Ground Zero The Saint Nicholas National Shrine at Ground Zero will be the only house of worship in the entire sixteen acre rebuilt World Trade Center. The parish will continue to function however; it will also be a National Shrine of the Holy Archdiocese of America. Its doors will be open to all to light a candle, say a prayer or meditate. Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, his inspiration was drawn from Byzantine architecture of the past which includes The Church of the Holy Savior in Chora and Hagia Sophia, in Istanbul, Turkey. Sitting high on a hill, adjacent to the 911 Memorial, this all white church will stand out amongst the black and grey skyscrapers. The Church will be constructed in the elevated Liberty Park. The landscaped forecourt will provide a gathering space for visitors with sweeping views that overlook the Ground Zero memorials and museum. How You Can Contribute Chapters and Districts can host an event/fundraiser geared towards children since St. Nicholas is the patron saint of children and donate the proceeds to this endeavor. A few fundraising ideas are listed in this brochure. The funds will be collected through the Daughters of Penelope Charitable Foundation, Inc. which will provide a tax deduction receipt to donors. Also, for individual donors, your employer may offer a matching gift program which will help double your donation. For those chapters who are energetic, consider turning this fundraising effort into a yearly event for other DOP programs! Your chapter can host events throughout the entire year to promote the great work of DOP. Whichever you choose, we hope you have a truly rewarding and successful program! 78 Objectives DOP will spearhead a three pronged approach to collecting funds. 1. DOP will reach out to each chapter/district with financial goals. 2. DOP will reach out via its contacts in the Greek American community to approach Greek Americans/Companies to assist in the rebuilding. 3. DOP will initiate an internet campaign to the Greek American community as a whole. Keys to Success YOU! The DOP member is the key to our success. Our chapters, officers, districts and members will motivate their local areas to promote and instill a sense of community in raising funds and awareness to the rebuilding of this national shrine. What to Know 1. It is important to remember that many of the people attending may be paying by cash for this event so making a receipt available may not be easy. For those who wish to pay by check, the check MUST be made payable to the chapter, and at the completion of the event when all the deposits have been made to the chapters bank account a check in that amount should be sent to HQ made payable to: Daughters of Penelope Charitable Foundation, Inc. Earmarked for St. Nicholas Fund 1909 Q Street, NW Suite 500 Washington, DC 20009 2. We want to make every effort to showcase the good work of our chapters in the communities. In order for this to work, all of us need to work together to make the DOP shine. 3. Every chapter should prepare a donation letter/receipt to be given to anyone who makes a check payable to their chapter. A sample has been provided below: Dear __________, On behalf of Chapter XXX, we would like to thank you for your donation in the amount of ________using check number ________dated: ________.
