The hurts keep coming
A bite? The injury bug is making a meal
of the Avs. LW Gabriel Landeskog is finally
back in action after missing 11 games
due to a head injury, but leading scorer
Matt Duchene (groin) was a spectator for
Tuesday’s shootout loss in San Jose. Their
best blueliner, Erik Johnson, has missed
the past seven outings.

Paging Paul Stastny
The Avs’ high-paid forward, C Paul Stastny, scored twice
in a Jan. 31 win over the Flames at the Saddledome and still
finished the night with a minus-2 rating. The US$6.6-million
man only has four goals on the season.
Welcome back, Bob
Flames head coach Bob Hartley returns to the rink where
he was behind the bench for five seasons from 1998-02,
but there’s not many familiar faces. In fact, 36-year-old RW
Milan Hejduk, who skated in his 1,000th game Feb. 4, is the
only holdover from Hartley’s stint with the Avalanche.
— Wes Gilbertson
hot and cold
HEAD TO HEAD
In the first tilt, the Avs scored three goals in the final 2:40
in a 6-3 win at the Dome. In three trips to Denver last year, the
Flames grabbed five points, thanks to two wins and an OT loss.
LW Alex Tanguay
His goal Tuesday in Minnesota
was an impressive showing of
hand-eye co-ordination, and he’s
now on a three-game point spree.
LW Sven Baertschi
I hate to pick on the rookie
winger, but he’s still seeking his
first point in seven skates this
season.
teams
D Jan Hejda
An unlikely source of offence,
the well-travelled rearguard had
a team-high four shots and two
assists Tuesday in San Jose.
RW David Jones
The power forward has been
blanked on the scoresheet
during the Avalanche’s three-game
losing skid.
injuries
FLAMES — RW Akim Aliu (knee injury) is ready to return.
G Miikka Kiprusoff (MCL sprain), C Mikael Backlund (knee)
and C Paul Byron (hand) are all on injured reserve.
AvS — C Matt Duchene (groin) is a game-day decision.
D Erik Johnson (head) and D Ryan Wilson (ankle) are on
injured reserve. C Steve Downie (knee) is out for the season.
