Youth, Care to Animals
That’s our name for her, aka
The House. Enid started life on
the 600 block of Redan. She
was a small home built in the
20s. She had high ceilings and
wide pine floors, which were
customary for the period. Over
the years she was “improved”
by closing in the back porch to create a kitchen, and the
old wooden windows were removed and replaced with
aluminum windows. Somewhere along the line she was
acquired by St. Mark’s Methodist church. The church
used her as their youth building, but recently St. Mark’s
began growing food for the hungry and the property that
she stood on became more valuable as additional gardening space. About that time we were looking for another home to move into the neighborhood onto the lot that
we had purchased at the corner of Enid and Heslep. Pg. 2

there is Barrio Dogs of Houston.
Formed in March 2010 when
native Houstonian, Gloria Medina
Zenteno, moved home to the
Greater East End after years away.
Barrio Dogs' focus, as the tagline
states is to Educate, Empower,
Transform. Educate the children
and empower the residents to
transform the community. Gloria
was horrified when she moved
home and became aware of the
animal neglect and abuse going
on in her old neighborhood. Pg. 2

Quality Feed and Garden

This month we feature our neighborhood’s
and one of the city’s oldest businesses. For
nearly 90 years, Quality Feed & Garden has
served Houstonians as a feed store on its
nearly two-acre North Main Street site in
Brooke Smith. The historical store proudly
ranks as one of Houston's oldest companies
and one of the oldest Purina feed and garden
stores in the United States. Today, Quality
Feed & Garden employs its 4th generation of
owners: partners Ken and Chris. The
company's products and services continue
expansion to meet the needs of customers
plus the animals, lawns and gardens they
tend. But the ambiance, one-on-one personal
service, reasonable prices and outstanding
expertise remain the same. They try hard to
"live local" in offering goods made
in the USA, products made in
Texas, and just about as much as
they can that's made right here in
Houston!

but quickly realized that work was never ending and
a solution closer to the root of the problem was
needed. Barrio Dogs was born. Since 2010 our
organization has grown dramatically and boasts
many programs such as Tales to Tails, a program
matching dogs with children who are struggling with
reading and YAP, the Youth & Paws program taking
dogs to schools and discussing with today's East
End youth the proper and humane way to care for
pets, the importance of spay and neuter and the
reasons why chaining a dog is not appropriate. By
reaching the youth now, we hope to change the
future of this community and end animal abuse and
neglect. Unfortunately while all of this proactive
work is going on, there is also defensive work to be
done and although we are firmly not a rescue group,
some rescue is inevitable. Barrio Dogs takes in
many sad canine cases every month, vets them and
works to adopt them into a forever home. We have
monthly adoption events and work hard to place our
dogs with the right humans. This month, we were
lucky to have a very generous donor sponsor our
adoption fee of $125 for every dog adopted at
February 25 and March 10 Natural Pawz events.
Between the two, we adopted out 12 dogs and sent
4 to foster homes. They were our most successful
events to date and we look forward to more. We
also participated in Rodeo Round Up with ABC-13's
Casey Curry this year on February 27, 2012. Our
organization was given $500 for participating and
we won the $2500 second prize, as well, but, the
real prize was getting our name out there and
making Houston aware of our work and our

Neighborhood Social Event
We struck a deal with the church and sent a truck to pick her up. It’s amazing that you
can actually pick a house up and move it and it survives the experience. This is the
2nd home that we have moved into the neighborhood and renovated. The first now
sits at 510 Archer. It was also a previous Woodland Heights resident in danger of
being torn down. Enid was not pretty sitting up high on her new piers. Friends and
neighbors thought we had lost our minds. She was about 900 square feet, 1/3rd of
which had to be demolished because it was not structurally sound. The good thing
about restoring a home in this condition is that you have the bones in place to guide
you, but also a blank slate from which to create. This is where Anthony is perfectly at
home (no pun intended). Having worked primarily with historic homes over the past
decade, he has an eye for the details that make these homes special, and the ability
to recreate them. He does this by using reclaimed materials from historic homes that
have been demolished. An example of this is the reclaimed oak flooring used
throughout, original exterior siding, and cedar shiplap used as a backsplash in the
kitchen and on the back porch. For details that cannot be found, pains are taken to
reconstruct them as close to period as possible. I am sure that you have noticed a lot
of positive activity in the neighborhood with homes being renovated and some new
construction. Our goal as we approach each project is not to simply flip a house and
make a profit. We strive to produce a quality, well-crafted home. You can see it in the
details from antique light fixtures, craftsman columns, and period hardware. We even
installed original wooden windows with wavy glass. Coming up on our 10th year in
Brooke Smith, we are also motivated by our love of the neighborhood and the desire
to improve it. As we near Enid’s completion, we invite you to stop by and take a peek
inside. Our philosophy with these historic homes is to honor their history, care for
them as best you can, improve them, while keeping their heritage in tact, and pass
them on to the next “caretaker.” Soon, Enid will be passed on to her next owners.
She’s been a fun project, and a new venture has grown out of the experience. Anthony has created Restoration Arts, a renovation business that focuses on the restoration
of historic homes.

Changes Coming to Airline Drive,
Part 2

This article is continued from the March issue. The section of
Airline from the North Loop to Cavalcade, bordering Brooke
Smith, is to be rebuilt over the next year. The following street
improvements are planned:

The overall road width (right-of-way) will expand 10 feet to 80 ft.
The lanes will be wider, and will include a 14-ft. wide turning
lane meant for 18-wheelers.

"The expanded street and wider lanes will move more traffic, at
higher speeds, but the larger issue at stake is the potential
impact of the project on the vibrant street life of the
corridor." (Susan Rogers, CITE #86, Summer 2011). The Civic
Club has identified this as a cause for concern and has been
working with our local officials. Easy pedestrian movement is in
jeopardy, and we are concerned that what author Susan Rogers
calls “The street (as) a social forum, a meeting place” could be
lost. Rogers speaks of designs for “multifunctional and hybrid
landscapes”, where the needs of pedestrians, motorists, and
commercial interests will all be served. Montie Beach Civic Club
will keep its members updated on developments on Airline
Drive.
Do you shop at Kroger? If you do, would you be willing to take a barcode paper for
Barrio Dogs with you on your next grocery shopping trip? At the register, the cashier will simply scan the barcode and then scan your Kroger Plus card and it permanently links it to your card. From that day forward every time you shop at Kroger
and use your Kroger Plus card, a donation will be sent to Barrio Dogs. Hopefully,
other grocery stores will join Kroger to help Barrio Dogs, but, at the current time,
Kroger is the only store participating. The current barcode will expire at the end of
April (the end of Kroger's fiscal year) and a new one will have to be obtained. For

Texas Que Smokehouse
Please join us in a family friendly atmosphere for some
great BBQ. This event is a great opportunity for all
Montie Beach Civic Club members to get to know each
other better and for non members to learn more about
the civic club. Please invite your neighbors to join in on
the fun. This event is free to attend but those attending
are responsible for purchasing their own meals and
drinks. Please stop by anytime during the event, which
will be held on Saturday, April 28th from 4-7pm. Please
