Its transformation from a tranquil desert into the trading and commercial hub of the Middle East has seen a prestigious business and tourist centre spring up amidst the wide open spaces of an awe-inspiring landscape. Aspriational Education It is an ambitious city with clear aspirations that are reflected in its approach to education. Dubai International Academic City set itself the aim of conquering the education market by opening its doors to universities and institutions from every corner of the globe. Heriot-Watt University was the first British university to open in Dubai International Academic City, in 2005, bringing with it the prestige of a high quality British education offering flexible study options for ambitious students throughout the Gulf region and beyond. Dubai is an emirate rich in contrasts. Located at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and Africa, Dubai is a magnet for tourists. Weekends can be spent on safari, riding camels, enjoying traditional Arabic coffee or going dizzy watching belly dancers. HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY / DUBAI PROSPECTUS 2017 Alternatively, you can enjoy shopping weekends or relaxing to music in the vast array of clubs and nightspots. The comforts of the 21st century coexist comfortably with the region’s rich Arab-Islamic culture. A word of caution, though – it’s easy to get lost in Dubai, largely because of the scale of ongoing construction projects. We strongly advise students coming to the UAE for the first time to familiarise themselves with local transport routes and customs. Another contrast is the weather. To cope with the hot summers (45–55°C) and mild winters, we suggest you don’t leave home without something to cover your head and, of course, a light jacket to protect you from sudden cool breezes and the occasional chill of air conditioning. www.hw.ac.uk/dubai 12/13 Go Global Iswarya Ravichandran Transferred from Dubai to Edinburgh to complete her fouth year in BEng Automotive Engineering. Many students in Dubai opt for the DEP as a sound means of bridging the qualification gap between school and university. There are many reasons why students decide to join our popular foundation year. Some students need to improve their English writing skills or gain a better understanding of UK study methods, or it may be that the certificate obtained in their native country is not accepted by Heriot-Watt. The DEP can also be useful when school leaving qualifications do not immediately qualify students for admission to the first year of our management, engineering, computing, psychology, fashion, architecture or interior design degrees. Given the vast array of educational systems that students navigate prior to entering our university, the DEP experience is an extremely valuable one in ensuring students’ success at Heriot-Watt. Quality Assurance The DEP has a number of quality assurance measures to ensure that our foundation programmes truly prepare students for success in their chosen undergraduate degrees. 1. Three specialised DEP pathways The DEP pathways are tailored to the Bachelor’s degrees that we teach, giving our DEP graduates the optimum start to their university career. The three pathways are: DEP – Engineering and Computing DEP – Management/Psychology DEP – Design Studies 2. Subject specialist staff This means the Mathematics, Physics, Business Management, Design Studies and Academic English courses taught on our various DEP pathways are not taught by generic teachers but by staff who have qualifications specific to the relevant area of teaching. 3. Academic learning essentials All DEP pathways put a strong emphasis on language and communication skills – not only spoken English but also written and academic English, research, referencing, presentation skills and so on – to provide students with the necessary skills for success at university. HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY / DUBAI PROSPECTUS 2017 4. Rigorous assessment The programmes are taught over two semesters, beginning in September and ending in May the following year. Students are assessed continuously throughout, using a combination of coursework, presentations and unit tests. A large portion of their overall grade is based on end-of-year exams that cover both semesters of learning, thus ensuring students’ readiness for undergraduate studies. 5. External examiners Our courses are reviewed by external examiners who confirm that the exams are of an appropriate standard for progression to university and that they are marked accurately and consistently. 6. External review As well as being subjected to continuous internal reviews, the DEP is regularly reviewed by external experts to ensure that students get the best possible learning experience. The reviews are carried out by highly regarded schools and universities within the region. www.hw.ac.uk/dubai 18/19 Engineering and Computing Entry Requirements Students who do not meet the programme entry requirements will be considered on a case by case basis. Recruitment and Admissions Office www.hw.ac.uk/dubai [email protected] 00 971 4 435 8700 HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY / DUBAI PROSPECTUS 2017 24/25 Undergraduate Programmes HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY / DUBAI PROSPECTUS 2017 www.hw.ac.uk/dubai 26/27 School of Engineering and Physical Sciences By Dr Peter Kew Engineers use their imagination and knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry to devise, apply and manage the technologies that are critical to the wellbeing and advancement of society. Engineers are fundamental to the evolution of the manufacturing industry and the development of the infrastructure upon which society depends: communications, power generation and supply, air conditioning, transport and water supply rely on engineers to design, commission and maintain them. Furthermore, all such activities must be undertaken with due concern for the impact of our lifestyles on the environment, our use of resources and climate change. Taking Dubai as an example, the construction of the metro system, airports and power stations, and iconic buildings such as Burj Al Arab and the record-breaking Burj Khalifa would not be possible without significant input from highly qualified, professional engineers. The provision of such well qualified and able engineers is at the core of Heriot-Watt University’s 195-year heritage, and we are proud to be able to offer our internationally recognised and respected degrees here in Dubai through our School of Engineering and Physical Sciences. All of our courses are under continuous development in conjunction with our colleagues in Edinburgh. By drawing on the experience of active researchers in every area in which we teach, we ensure that our courses remain up to date in a world of rapidly changing technology. HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY / DUBAI PROSPECTUS 2017 Chemical Engineering was offered by the Dubai Campus for the first time in 2015, meaning that all of the major branches of engineering are now available on campus. The performance of our students has been outstanding – assessment is identical in Edinburgh and Dubai, and Dubai students are always prominent in the prize lists at the end of each year. Project work carried out by students often leads to peerreviewed publication and several projects have been successful in receiving external awards. These achievements prove that Dubai students are making the most of the opportunities that studying engineering at Heriot-Watt University Dubai provides. All of our students enjoy an intimate teaching environment that blends conventional lectures and tutorials with interactive online material in our virtual learning environment (VLE). We also provide access to what is probably the best e-library in the region – the same e-library that our students in Edinburgh enjoy. Our e-library and VLE are accessible from both home and campus, optimising the use of study time and allowing our students’ families to experience something of the teaching and learning we provide. With support from the School, the students operate an engineering society, Engineers-4Life, which organises social events and visits, competitions and workshops for students. We welcome applications from well qualified and motivated students who wish to benefit from a high quality learning experience and gain a degree recognised by the appropriate British professional institutions. Such degrees can prepare you for employment in the engineering profession in Dubai, the Gulf region or beyond. 2+2 Study Mode Labs and extra-curricular projects develop knowledge and practical skills. Our purposebuilt laboratory and workshop areas let students undertake practical work, applying the principles learned in class to real problems. This study option allows all students to study the first two years of their degree programme at the Dubai Campus and the last two years at the relevant UK campus. Separate fees apply. For further information, please visit: Our final year individual student projects are designed to be relevant to the needs of local industry and many are carried out in conjunction with companies, which benefit from students’ innovative thinking while providing them with experience of real life challenges. All projects include an understanding of environmental issues. www.hw.ac.uk/dubai/programmes/ 2-2-undergraduate-programme.htm www.hw.ac.uk/dubai 28/29 Electrical and Electronic Engineering BEng / BEng (Hons) Entry Requirements Students who do not meet the programme entry requirements will be considered on a case by case basis. Our MSc programmes in Energy and Renewable Energy Engineering have been developed to meet the demand for energy professionals from a range of backgrounds who specialise in the efficient provision and utilisation of energy. The MSc Energy programme was developed as a course for multi-mode delivery and has been running in Edinburgh, via our approved learning partners and through distance learning mode since 2001. It has been offered as an on-campus taught programme in Dubai since 2010. The MSc Renewable Energy Engineering programme was introduced in Edinburgh in 2007 and to the Dubai Campus in 2012. All courses on these programmes at the Dubai Campus are taught in the evenings and at weekends so that students who work during normal office hours can attend lectures and tutorials. Energy – based on fossil fuels and, increasingly, renewables – is an essential component of our existence. The cost, availability and efficient utilisation of energy are increasingly strong focal points in the strategies of governments worldwide, as they realise that the fossil fuels that are the ‘raw material’ for most of the energy used today have a finite life. Of even greater concern is the probability that the products of the inefficient or profligate use of carbon-based fuels contribute to climate change, which may disrupt parts of our balanced ecosystem in the medium term. Our Energy MSc programmes are designed to equip students to meet the challenges we currently face and to be well placed to find employment with companies that produce, supply and use energy, whether through conventional means or from novel or renewable resources. All of our students enjoy an intimate teaching environment that blends conventional lectures and tutorials with interactive online material in our virtual learning environment (VLE). The courses are continually reviewed by research-active staff in Edinburgh and Dubai to ensure that the material remains relevant and up to date. The MSc degrees are accredited by the Energy Institute (EI) in the UK, on the basis that the learning outcomes, academic quality control processes and standards achieved are the same in Dubai as in Edinburgh. Graduates of our postgraduate degrees who have a suitable engineering undergraduate degree will meet the academic requirements for EI membership and to achieve Chartered Engineer status. Students registered on these programmes are eligible for free EI membership at the appropriate level (normally graduate membership). We welcome applications from well qualified and motivated students who wish to benefit from a high quality learning experience and gain a highly regarded postgraduate degree. Furthermore, we provide access to probably the best e-library in the region – the same e-library enjoyed by our students in Edinburgh – enabled by the power of the Internet. Our e-library and VLE are accessible both on campus and using the student’s home or workplace computer, or any other device providing Internet access. This optimises the use of study time and allows our students’ families and employers to see something of the teaching and learning we provide. This was the year in which oil was first produced from the North Sea. The Institute has since established a global reputation for research and for producing high quality graduates. The Institute of Petroleum Engineering merged with the School of the Built Environment in 2014 to form the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society. The MSc in Petroleum Engineering, available at the Dubai Campus, focuses on petroleum and reservoir engineering and also covers petroleum geosciences and economics, making it suitable for anyone seeking to build a career in petroleum, reservoir, drilling or completions engineering. The programme combines lectures, tutorials and project work, thus encompassing a wide range of petroleum engineering fundamentals pertinent to the modern petroleum industry. Project work provides an opportunity for ideas and methods assimilated through lectures and tutorials to be applied to real field evaluation and development design problems. The courses are applied in nature and have been designed so that a graduate is technically well prepared for, and has a sound knowledge of, the industry into which they will be recruited. HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY / DUBAI PROSPECTUS 2017 The diverse academic disciplines of the staff of the Institute enable both research and teaching to be pursued in a multi-skilled environment, which is essential to the modern oil and gas industry. The Institute has pursued, and will continue to pursue, relevant research and course development to meet the changing needs of the industry with which it is so closely associated. Teaching staff at the Dubai Campus are supported in the delivery of courses by specialists from Edinburgh. Students are provided with high quality teaching materials through the University’s virtual learning environment, accessible from any device with an Internet connection. Petroleum Engineering The Institute is committed to the development and delivery of training and research programmes to help the international petroleum industry meet the global demand for the exploitation of subsurface oil and gas resources. Our high calibre academic and research team fosters our growing reputation for teaching and research activity in a multidisciplinary environment – the kind of environment that is essential to the oil and gas industry. Career Opportunities The MSc in Petroleum Engineering comprises courses that provide a specialist education tailored to the requirements of the upstream petroleum industry. The relevance of this education, combined with our careful selection of candidates, has over the years encouraged oil and oilfield service companies to target Heriot-Watt when recruiting graduates. The petroleum industry is subject to dramatic changes of fortune over time, with the oil price capable of very rapid rates of change in either direction. Petroleum, however, remains the dominant source of energy, with the global production of oil and gas currently at record rates. Companies face increasing technological and commercial challenges to keeping their wells flowing and are increasingly dependent on input from petroleum engineers and geoscientists. It is widely recognised that a steady influx of new people and fresh ideas is vital to the longer term success and stability of any organisation, and it is therefore expected that recruitment to the petroleum industry will continue, especially for candidates who display motivation and the appropriate qualifications. www.hw.ac.uk/dubai Entry Requirements Petroleum Engineering 100/101 Students who do not meet the programme entry requirements will be considered on a case by case basis. Recruitment and Admissions Office www.hw.ac.uk/dubai [email protected] 00 971 4 435 8700 HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY / DUBAI PROSPECTUS 2017 126/127 Psychology By Dr Annie Crookes In 2011, Heriot-Watt University introduced its sought after Psychology programmes to the Dubai Campus and various international collaborative partner institutions. The Psychology with Management (Bachelor’s) and Business Psychology (Master’s) programmes were initially chosen not only for their continued popularity and prestigious academic standing, but also because psychology uniquely applies across the full spectrum of global cultures and commercial industry. In recent years, there has been growing acknowledgement of the role of psychology beyond traditional clinical contexts to a broad range of everyday settings. For example, it is now widely acknowledged that understanding human behaviour is critical to ensuring optimal employee performance and thereby influencing the overall profits and stability of an organisation. At a population and society level, the need to enhance psychological well-being alongside physical health is now widely accepted by governments, economists and health professionals. HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY / DUBAI PROSPECTUS 2017 Psychology is of particular relevance to the UAE and to the Middle East and to the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, where the business environment is highly competitive and the population Is both dynamic and multicultural. Though psychology is still an emerging industry, its inclusion both the public and private sector is increasingly apparent in the region. Indeed, the UAE has recently appointed a Minister of Happiness, clearly indicating a local acknowledgement of the need to assess and support the mental health of the dynamic and unique population. This also indicates an interest in supporting the growth of psychology across industries, which is likely to be reflected in increased career opportunities for psychology graduates. The programme has been quick to respond to these new perspectives in psychology by developing programmes with a strong focus on the applied contexts. In particular, the Business Psychology programme overtly addresses key areas where psychology is being used in business, health and engineering. Business psychology is the systematic study of workplace behaviour with the aim of improving individual and organisational performance. The objective is to use knowledge from psychological science to analyse the needs, motivations and mental processes that impact on individual, team and organisational effectiveness. As an academic discipline, business psychology balances the specialist fields of psychology and the pragmatic approaches of management and human resource management. In this way, it provides an attractive integration of the various fields and a unique perspective on the range of issues faced in workplace settings. Business psychology is a psychological field which provides a unique approach to key topics in management, including leadership, talent management, organisational change and executive coaching. Studies in business psychology also allow the student to develop a broad range of transferable skills, including in written communication, critical thinking, research and data analysis. www.hw.ac.uk/dubai 128/129 Business Psychology MSc / PG Diploma DURATION: 1 year full-time / typically 2 years part-time FEES: 78,000 AED per programme DELIVERY: Weekday evenings The Programme The programme is aimed at people already in, or aspiring towards, a career in management or human resource-related fields within any industry. It also provides training for those wishing to pursue specialist consultancy work in business psychology. This programme provides a detailed understanding of various aspects of psychology relevant to the workplace. Students may find some subject areas familiar from previous studies in business management. In all areas, however, the business psychology approach is to utilise primary research data and psychological principles to analyse situations and develop evidence-based policies. Programme Content MSc students take all of the courses listed right over a one or two years. You can apply to the Dubai Campus any time you like, as we have a rolling admissions system. There are deadlines before the start of each semester, however. Please contact us for more information. Q: When will I receive my offer of study? The Recruitment and Admissions Office endeavours to contact applicants within two weeks of receipt of a completed application. Q: Do I need proof of English language proficiency to apply? If English is not your first language and you have not studied in English before (either at school or at a previous institution) then you must provide proof of English language proficiency. Each programme has its own requirements but the lowest we accept is IELTS 6 Academic (or IELTS 5.5 for the Degree Entry Programme) or equivalent. Do you have multiple intakes? Q: Yes. September is the University’s largest intake with all programmes that we offer starting then. We also have a number of programmes with an intake in January. Q: Do you allow students to transfer from other universities and colleges? Yes. Provided that you have studied and passed the acceptable subjects for our programmes, we will consider your application to transfer. Transcripts or mark sheets detailing previous education must be submitted at the time of applying. HERIOT-WATT UNIVERSITY / DUBAI PROSPECTUS 2017 Q: Do applicants have to take an entrance test? No. Applications are assessed by previously attained qualifications or the successful completion of the applicant’s current qualification. What’s an Honours year in undergraduate study? Q: Because Heriot-Watt is a Scottish university, it traditionally takes four years to complete a degree. An Honours year is an additional year of study at the end of the three years it takes to achieve a Bachelor’s degree. Do the programme fees include the programme materials and exam fees? Q: The annual fees include all academic costs associated with completing your programme. It may be necessary, however, to charge School of Textiles and Design students an additional studio fee. Resit, transport, accommodation and visa fees/charges are additional, as is the application processing fee. Q: Is there a mentoring scheme? Yes. Each student is assigned to a member of the academic staff with whom they meet throughout the year. Is there a careers service? Q: The University has a Careers Advisory Service that supports all students. Will my degree certificate mention Dubai? Q: No. As students study the same British programmes regardless of the country in which they are based, all are awarded the same Heriot-Watt University certificate. Q: Do you offer internships? The University does not offer a formal placement programme as part of your degree. The Dubai Campus has excellent links with local and international companies, however, and assists students in finding suitable internships. Is the Dubai Campus accredited? Q: The Dubai Campus is accredited by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and fully licensed to teach its degrees in Dubai. All graduates receive a British degree that is accredited by Royal Charter in the UK. Q: What is the difference between a Postgraduate Diploma and a Master’s qualification? Generally, a Master’s degree takes 12 months to complete, consisting of eight courses taught over nine months and a three-month research project. Students who successfully pass the courses and maintain an aggregate score of 50% on the taught courses can undertake the research project, and graduate with a Master’s degree. Those students who do not undertake the research project, or who don’t qualify for the project, will graduate with a Postgraduate Diploma.
