SPOLEK has a big garden offering a cool oasis on hot days. Escape from the summer heat into the shadows and quench your thirst with the amber nectar. We advise you to order two beers at once - the staff are never in much of a hurry. Underground and retro with a collection of old radios. Guinness beer, a calm atmosphere, muted interiors. Don’t be afraid of the weird entrance and come inside to U ZRZAVÉ MARY (Mary the Redhead). KAPIČKOVA 200 m 300 m 400 m HRADNÍ HEAVY INDUSTRY ART WALK ZÁVADĚ In the first half of the 20th centuryNA heavy industry and coal mining made their mark on the centre of the city. Houses were copiously decorated with reliefs or life-sized statues of miners celebrating this tough but proud profession. So look upwards and take a tour of Ostrava’s past carved into stone. 40 THE ARCH OF ART Not open, not closed, not public, not private... that’s GALERIE LAUBY (the Archways Gallery), a joint project of the Ostrava Museum and the Faculty of Arts. Projections, sound and light installations, and even some live shows (once the city’s emblem – a white horse – came to life here!) and a lot more contemporary artistic acts created with sparkling wit, all fitting perfectly into the museum’s archways – definitely worth a visit. LADY OF CULTURE A spiral staircase winds its way up to the first floor of this Art Nouveau building… Just follow the cigar smoke and the STARÁ ARÉNA (Old Arena) cafe emerges in front of you, with its faded but stylish furniture and excellent coffee. And also with its cultural programme – new artists keen to make their mark as actors, singers, dancers, and more. Come support them too. 400 m 5 mins walk NA PR LNÍ 0m NA KAR OLÍNĚ 39 A GRAND OLD (Mon–Thu/Fri 11AM–12PM/2AM, Sat–Sun 3PM–12PM ) 51 (Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 9AM–6PM, Wed 10AM–7PM) (Mon–Fri 07.30–till sold out (2PM–4PM/) 42 TĚ (Mon–Fri 8AM–5PM) 38 A CIRCLE OF SUGAR People here love JUST DONUT. Real donuts are made here by two nice students, who followed their dream of making traditional American donuts and are usually sold out by noon. Their donuts with peanut butter are awesome – you must have one! P IV 41 PUPPETING A bit "outside the box": Rittstein's Dawn in Ostrava in Umělecká Street. Wow, tram no. two is coming!!! (depending on the programme) You’ve never heard about Ostrava’s very own astronomical clock? Every even-numbered hour huge wooden fairytale characters emerge from the depths of the alternative stage at DIVADLO LOUTEK (the Puppet Theatre). You can see grown-up performances on Mondays, but all the other days are perfect for children. (Daily 5PM–2AM) If you’re afraid of the wolf, stay out of the forest… But if you’re not afraid of the Ostrava underground (like I’m not!), then head straight Andy into the absinthe club LES (meaning ‘Forest’). NA VIZI NĚ performances, concerts and poetry séances in I’ve seen theatre here. Entrance is granted only after ringing a bell and saying the password. Just ask passers-by. Or think about the ingredients of this magical green beverage, which is served here in a special BERNEROVA glass, with a spoon and a sugar cube. 42 THE BIGGEST HATE FREE ZONE IN OSTRAVA (Mon 3PM–10PM, Tue–Thu 10AM–10PM, Fri 10AM–12PM, weekend depending on events, open in summer) The building that’s home to the CULTURAL CENTRE COOLTOUR has gone through a lot, but you will feel right at home as soon as you come inside. Attend a performance, workshop, concert, party, movie or discussion, or take part in one of the projects to liven up the city centre. You will find all of contemporary culture here, whether you want to join in or just sit in the corner and watch. During summer everything is moved outside to a trendy garden. Enjoy a cool soda or Cooltour’s legendary pickled cheese, rent a barbecue or a stylish bike. krte czech ÁRN KAS 44 WOULD YOU PREFER A FROG OR A MONKEY? (Mon–Fri 2PM–12PM, Sat 6PM–12PM) A nice pub owned by a young couple offering an unusual choice of beers from mini-breweries (with great names like Frog, Drunken Monkey and others) and some relatively ordinary snacks. BABYLON CAFÉ is a cool place to hang out with your friends, chat and pet the resident dog. 45 MINICINEMA – MAXIMOVIES (Mon–Fri 10AM–23.45, Sat–Sun 2PM–23.45) A cinema for 70 people. Not even one more! It’s really mini – the clue’s in the name. But you wouldn’t know it from the quality of the films. Themed festivals are held at MINIKINO (mini-cinema) regularly, the most popular being Nordic Film Winter. While waiting for a film, grab a beer in the cafe from the nearby brewery “Koníček” (meaning ‘horse’). 46 TREATS FROM THE BESKYDY MOUNTAINS (Mon–Fri 07.30–7PM, Sat–Sun 1PM–7PM) The so-called “milk bars” (which actually offered all kinds of food) were quite popular here during the communist regime. But forget those! MILK BAR NAPROTI (meaning ‘opposite’) is a modern social business where you can find all kinds of snacks made from milk, cottage cheese, butter and yogurt, minimalist design and always helpful staff. It’s also one of the few places in Ostrava where you can “pre-pay” a cup of coffee for the next guest. 47 AN UP-AND-COMING STREET A dilapidated remnant of forgotten glory. That’s OSTRAVICA-TEXTILIA today. Once a department store selling a huge range of goods, now a ruin without even a hint of its former elegance. We pray for the miracle of resurrection! Hundreds of taverns and pubs are located all around the city. Ostrava parties smell of absinthe and various other types of Czech spirits such as fernet (a bitter herbal spirit) or zelená (green and minty-tasting) – hangover guaranteed! And another phenomenon has emerged – cafes. They have sprung up like mushrooms after the rain (as we say in Czech) during the last few years. Baristas compete among themselves in their art and inventiveness, and the locals are getting used to being pampered. If you like to hang out in a cafe or if you just really need a coffee after a night out, this town won’t disappoint you! Nowadays, though, there are huge numbers of cultural events breaking through the city’s outer industrial shell. Historic industrial monuments are being converted so they can host concerts, performances and other events - and the streets regularly burst into life in the hands of cultural enthusiasts who want to make their city truly special. Culture is the new wind in the sails that Ostrava needed! Do you fancy some home-cooked food even on vacation? Are you looking for some meat-free treats? Then your best plan of action is to grab a breakfast, lunch or dinner at BONGUSTA: 80% gluten free and vegan, 100% vegetarian. A lovely, tiny bistro with checkered tablecloths and wasabi hot dogs to kill for. Watch out, the bistro is moving to a different address in September. Check the USE-IT Ostrava FB for more info then. UNSK OJE Those are the words of the popular local singer Jarek Nohavica. Since then, this has become a popular and well-known “fact”. But nobody actually knows what this “distinctiveness” means in reality. We are definitely straightforward, honest and direct. Sometimes too honest and too direct. At least you know at all times if you are to expect a slap or when you’ll get a kiss instead. But don’t be afraid to look beyond the tough outer shell - underneath we are the same as the people anywhere else in the world. And the bit of individuality will at least spice up your memories. CULTURAL OSTRAVA (Mon–Fri 9AM–7PM, weekends closed till spring) GORK ODB OSTRAVA’S PEOPLE ARE "DISTINCTIVE" You’ll either love them or hate them. Ostrava’s logo of three exclamation marks (!!!) has divided locals into two groups – some get an endorphin rush when they see them, others get pumped with angry adrenaline. It would be in your best interest to join the first group, because these exclamation marks can be found nearly everywhere – from T-shirts to garbage trucks. It is the only logo in the world that you can write as a text message: OSTRAVA!!! VEGEPOINT SIGHTSEEING Á NA OOfficially the only gay club in Ostrava, unofficially a place where all the good parties end. Yes, that’s one way to call our EMA SLAG-HEAP. A slag-heap is a hill made from the waste material from a coal mine. Nowadays they are an important part of the unique landscape of our city and a popular destination for Sunday outings. Follow the yellow-marked hiking trail from the Sýkora Bridge and experience the pungent smell once you climb up to the top to admire the view of the landscape. You might spot the smoke coming from the ground as the slag-heap still burns deep underground. You can only enter at your own risk but the sight of dog lovers, retired people and families will convince you there’s a good chance of surviving. LOVE THEM OR HATE THEM??? A couple of industrial relics are to be found in the city, forming the unique genius loci of the day-today work, housing and life of the locals. Here you can hear up-and-coming regional bands as well as musicians with a great reputation and international fame. 2 M BACH CULT MUSIC CLUB (Mon 5PM–1AM, Tue–Fri 2PM–1AM, Sat 5PM–1AM) 3 1 Lucka Take any tram from here to Muglinovská stop (just one stop) 5 minute walk DŘ ÁP ICK Hearty homemade soups in a stylish setting – three kinds to choose from every day. OVA KŘIŽÍK JIN 2 (Mon–Fri 9AM–5PM) S PRE RN Take bus no. 34 or 56 from the ‘Muglinovská’ stop to LANDEK PARK to explore the origins of Ostrava. Look around the place where the Venus of Petřkovice (a prehistoric stone figure) was found, or go down the shaft of the former Anselm coal mine. You will learn about the backbreaking labour of miners, working in difficult conditions. But nowadays you can enjoy sports here as well – bowling, volleyball and loads more. Soňa You can find a number clubs and pubs with plenty SKÉ of soul on MAN way from the square to the banks Jthe A N A of theNOstravice River, plus quiet nooks and a forgotten statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. Regretfully also a lot of cars, but that will hopefully change in the foreseeable future and we will be able to promenade here as if we really were in the Danish capital. 48 A BRIDGE TO HISTORY How better to get to know Ostrava’s architecture than from the steel bridge made by the local ironworks? And where better to feel the touch of the past than at the MILOŠ SÝKORA Iveta BRIDGE, connecting the Moravian and Silesian parts of Ostrava? Named after a WWII hero who saved the bridge from being blown up by the Nazis. A reminder of this historical milestone, a tank sitting on a monument just over the bridge, watches over it nowadays. Iva 49 DROP ANCHOR ON THE BANK (Mon–Thu 11AM–12PM, Fri 11AM–2AM, Sat 6PM–2AM) For me, DOCK is the perfect “ neighbourhood” meeting place. Every time I go there, I find someone I can chat with. I am sure that this is the biggest advantage of this club on the banks of the Ostravice River – natural mingling. The view is a nice bonus, along with concerts in many genres and a legendary Sunday brunch. Moreover the club is only just “round the corner” from basically everywhere in the city centre. 50 MUSIC ON THE RIVERBANK (depending on the programme) Club bands, rock, punk, metal, even hip hop, all these can be found in one of Ostrava’s core music clubs, BARRÁK. Nearly every night there are concerts by some or other music stars. Thanks to the club’s management, it’s hosted gigs by several legendary foreign musicians here. 51 A CASTLE WITH A DIFFERENCE In summer daily 9AM–8PM Most castles are built on hills. But not the SILESIAN OSTRAVA CASTLE! (Slezskoostravský hrad) It lies just over the river along a path leading to the Ema slag-heap. It nearly sunk without trace due to coal mining under it, and it was close to being demolished, but thankfully it was rescued and now it’s a venue for many cultural events, along with many exhibitions and even treasure hunts. But go ahead and get off the tram at the Mariánské náměstí stop - look around the former workers’ cottages of an old coal mine DK . Nowadays a residential district with plenty of businesses, but also some beautifully preserved architecture. Then get a bit of a workout in a game of DiscGolf – a bit further on, near the gasholder. The industrial district of Ostrava full of noise from the ironworks. The ZÁBŘEH CHATEAU 68 is a local curiosity – like an oasis in the middle of concrete housing estates, this cultural monument has been remodelled into a stylish hotel and restaurant, as good at history as at cooking, with their meals bringing a nostalgic taste of the past. After your meal, you can try the local minibrewery’s beer or dive into a beer bath for a spa treatment. You will get here on tram no. 2 – get off at the Karpatská stop and walk behind the concrete shopping centre towards the church. Seek and you shall find it. Hotel City.City and its LOFT restaurant 70 in Ostrava-Přívoz, Macharova street 16, will astound you with austere, sober interiors, with furniture by the most famous Nordic designers. In a combination with excellent food, this place is certainly an experience, and if you are looking for stylish accommodation, be sure to stay here. If you are looking for a place for a posh date, where you won’t be embarrassed to invite your better half, then head right down into the cellar. Yes, there you can find the Art Deco INDUSTRIAL CAFÉ 71 - with heavenly coffee and pastries, along with a gallery as a bonus. They have great breakfasts and lunches in the JET SET 72 cafe along with the ghosts of the 1930s ‘Elektra Palace’, which was once frequented by two legendary Czech authors and artists Jan Werich and Karel Čapek. A new restaurant a bit further on is SCAN/SEN 73 , inspired by the Scandinavian minimalism. They literally play with the food, and you wouldn’t know what to choose first from their lunch and dinner menus. The HLUBINA COAL MINE 66 is a miniature city quarter filled with culture, fun, history and who knows what else. A little bit of something for anyone, you can stuff into one day what you wouldn’t be able to experience in a year elsewhere. Start the morning with a little workout on the TENDON HLUBINA climbing wall right under the old coal mine’s tower. Take a look at the PROVOZ HLUBINA “culture factory” right next to it, run by young enthusiasts keen to support emerging artists and liven up this old industrial site. Grab an excellent coffee in the stylish cafe MARYČKA. Local legend and singer -songwriter JAREK NOHAVICA built his own club HELIGONKA here, where he holds not only his own concerts (even though they’re usually sold out, you may be lucky and get tickets – and they’re certainly not to be missed), but also invited theatres and other performers. The VYSOKÁ PEC (blast furnace) no. 1 63 is close by. Take the lift to the top, where you can listen to a talk about iron-making and grab another coffee in the glass BOLT TOWER café on top. It’ll be well worth it to have the whole of Ostrava in the palm of your hand. Enjoy, relax, absorb the atmosphere. Next there’s a bit of learning and fun combined, in two parts of the SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CENTRE 65 . The smaller one (also called U6) has been designed to honour the legacy of Jules Verne and his adventure books. So immerse yourself in a world full of discoveries, experiments, mistakes… and try your hand at how a steam machine and other inventions work. The bigger and newer part of the Centre (you can´t miss its modern mirror glass building) also has its own botanical garden and cinema! All that’s left now is to visit the huge hall called the GONG and the PLATO gallery 64 . If you are lucky the Gong will be filled with music. It’s a concert and theatre auditorium, which was created by converting a former gasholder. You can’t see anything like it anywhere else! The whole Vítkovice area is a popular venue for various musical festivals. Party amidst the pipes and factory halls, and soak up the industrial atmosphere. The biggest festival is Colours of Ostrava… OSTRAVA LIVES! „Czech“ out how busy Ostrava is during the year: COLOURS OF OSTRAVA SUMMER IN FRONT OF COOLTOUR A four-day multi-genre music festival has become an integral part of Ostrava’s scene, so don’t miss it if you’re here during summer.
