Teak Wood (Details of teak)
Teak is the common name for the tropical hardwood tree species Tectonagrandis and its wood products.
The species is placed in the family Lamiaceae. Tectonagrandis is a large, deciduous tree that is dominant
in mixed hardwood forests. It has small, fragrant white flowers and papery leaves that are often hairy on
the lower surface. Teak wood has a leather-like smell when it is freshly milled. Teak timber is particularly
valued for its durability and water resistance, and is used for boat building, exterior construction, veneer,
furniture, carving, turnings, and other small wood projects. Tectonagrandis is native to south and southeast
Asia, mainly India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Burma, but is naturalized and cultivated in many
countries in Africa and the Caribbean. Burma accounts for nearly one third of the world's total teak
production.
Laos
The Lao P.D.R. is located in the heart of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. It lies between latitude
14 to 23 degrees North and longitude 100 to 108 degrees East. It is the only Southeast Asian country
without direct access to the sea, stretching North to South 1}00 kilometers.
Laos encompasses a total of 236,800 square kilometers with the terrain characterized by three distinct
regions - mountains, plateaus, and plains.
Forest coverage had decreased by nearly one-third, to just 47 percent of total land area. Despite the
dwindling expanse, timber-including ironwood, mahogany, pine, redwood, and teak-and other forestry
products-benzoin (resin), charcoal, and sticklac-constitute a valuable supply of potential export goods.
Known as king of timber belongs to the family Verbenaceae.lts scientific name is Tectonagrandis. lt grows
as a huge tree and yields excellent quality wood. Plantation Teak is a tropical hardwood tree from the
genus Tectona, endemic to Southeast Asia that is exclusively planted for the purpose of forestry management. Although the genus Tectona is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, primarily Indonesia,
Myanmar, LAO P.D.R. Bangladesh and Thailand, the cultivation of plantation teak is economically viable in
other tropical regions such as Central America.
