CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA
Philadelphia Chapter - American Singles Golf Association — August 2014
From The Prez
As we enter the second half
of our golf season, I want to
take this opportunity to thank
all who have coordinated and
participated in the events
held to date. The hard work
and effort of all those who
have taken on the responsibility of organizing an event have provided all who took
advantage of the opportunity to play with
enjoyable and often memorable experiences on the links, at the 19th hole, or
both.
Recently, questions have been raised by
our coordinators and members regarding
Chapter Policies and Procedures pertaining to guest play, and refunds. Hopefully,
the following will clarify our policy for each:
Guests are invited to play one (1) round of
golf in a scheduled official ASGA coordinated event prior to applying for membership. Only single or legally separated individuals are eligible to play as guests in official ASGA coordinated events. Currently,
there are no restrictions for guest attendance for monthly social meetings. However, we should discourage anyone from
attending these meetings who has no intent to join our Chapter.
Most, if not all of our courses require a
player count in advance of the outing.
Green fees are then calculated on the
number of players registered and provided to the course by the coordinator.
Many courses will not refund green fees
for “no shows” without advance notice.
Members should attempt to notify outing
coordinators as early as possible when
unable to play. If the open spot is able to
be filled by the coordinator, the cancelling member will receive a refund. If the
open spot cannot be filled and the
course is unwilling to credit the green
fee, a refund will not be available to the
cancelling member.
The back half of the season contains
some great golf courses and opportunities for more great times. Check out the
schedule and make plans to take advantage of as many as you can.

Early morning showers
departed just as 28 players began to roll into the
parking lot. Although a
bit cloudy and cool, the
course was in terrific
shape and did not disappoint those of us looking forward to an
enjoyable round of golf on a beautiful

and challenging course. After expending
a lot of energy negotiating the rolling hills,
knobs and traps of Glen Mills and leaving
plenty of shots, balls, and expletives on
the course, it was time to celebrate our
nations 238th birthday. Liz Mohamed graciously offered an open invitation to the
tired, hungry and poor (rounds) to her
home for a generous variety of barbecue,
beverages, and front row seats to a spectacular fireworks display. A perfect finale
to a holiday filled with fun, friends and golf.
Honeybrook Outing – July 12
~by Mary McSurdy, Outing Coordinator
We had a gorgeous day for the Honey
Brook outing this year. This course has
proven to be a favorite for ASGA members, and we were lucky to have such a
great turnout again this year. We had 36
golfers making the pairing and scheduling
job quite easy.
Prizes for longest drive and closest to
the pin were given to Ron Schillow, Patti
Rose and Karen Eckert. Rich Menchaca
also qualified for a prize but was not present when prizes were awarded. Rich I
owe you a golf cap. I will catch up with
you later this year.
Once again the staff at Bistro on 10, now
the Waynebrook Inn, provided excellent
food and service and welcomed our group

with smiles and open arms. Bistro on 10 was
definitely a great place to eat, drink, and unwind after a great day of golf. And let’s not
forget Ben Ingles and his staff at Honey
Brook Golf Club for taking very good care of
ASGA. It was a great day for everyone
thanks to all of these great folks and the
ASGA team!!

Twenty-four people enjoyed RiverWinds
Golf outing on July 19th. It was a beautiful
day with warm summer breezes along the
Delaware River. The course was in great
shape and ready for the eager golfers of
ASGA.
Winners of the Special "Lazy, Crazy Days
of Summer" Prizes were: Gene Mammone Closest to the Pin on #17 the Island Green;
Tricia Steege - Closest to the Pin on #17;
Dan Greene - Closest to the Phantom Frog
marker! Liz Mohammed - Longest Drive;
Joe Ciravolo - Longest Drive. Runner-ups
were Dan Greene and Marianne Carbine.
Winners were - Rich Switzer and Connie
Boyle. A nice dinner was had by all at the
RiverWinds Restaurant overlooking the
Delaware. Thanks to all those who attended! Rene' and I had fun planning and
playing!
Pinecrest Outing – July 26
~by Jan Nader, Outing Coordinator with a little
help from Josie Sharp
Pinecrest Country Club in Lansdale was
the site of the largest outing this season on
July 26 for Philadelphia ASGA. Forty-four
optimistic golfers signed on for this event –
optimistic, because despite weather predictions of a gorgeous day, things started off a
bit damp. Our good vibes must have had
an effect, however, because the day
turned out to be perfect in many ways.
Surprise, surprise!
And surprises did abound. First off, Paul
O’Connell bought a new car! (You can
always expect a great deal in Lansdale!)
Several new members and at least one
guest played with the group for the first
time. Welcome Lynanne Schaeffer and
Norman Wilson. And guest Dave Lewicki, we hope we made a good impression and you’ll join the group soon. Paul
Corby had to bow out of golf, due to being
wounded in combat the day before while
golfing with this buddies. But he surprised
us by joining us at the restaurant later.
Hope you’re well on the mend, Paul! Lyn
Jennings got a surprise when she walked
into what she THOUGHT was the Ladies’
Room at the restaurant and found a mighty
tall lady in there who bore a remarkable
resemblance to Paul O’Connell. That’s at
least two surprises for Paul, so far. Lyn
was blushing as brightly as her shirt shone
when she returned to the table. And, too
bad we don’t keep these statistics, but
Frank Lazarus had a heck of a longest
drive. Someone observed that he didn’t
realize Bubba Watson was playing with us.
And we had a guest appearance by celebrity designer Donna (McBride) Morgan.
Hope to see you again, soon, Donna!!
And so many, many prizes! We gathered at Metropolitan American Diner and
Bar for food, and friendship and prizes. We
awarded closest-to-the-pin on all par 3’s
for men and women, so that’s eight prizes.
Proud owners of either Titlest Pro V1s or
Chromex gold are: Gene Mammone, Pat
Kosek, Caroline Brinker, Paul O’Connell, Terry McMullen, Gerry Chalphin,
Pat Miller, and Bruce Frank. Maria Ascanio hit the longest drive for women.
Once again, Frank Lazarus had one-forthe-record-books with his longest drive for
Pinecrest Outing
men. Awesome, Frank! Norm Wilson
captured men’s straightest drive on his first
time out with our group. And Maria Ascanio drove on to receive the prize for
women’s straightest drive. Way to go,
Maria!
You don’t have to be a contest winner to
leave with prizes, though, because we offered four random drawings for either a
weekday greens fee at Pinecrest (two
available) or a $30 gift card for Pinecrest
(two available). Winners of these drawings are Richard Switzer, Bruce Frank,
Norm Wilson, and Tammy Gavin.
Thanks to everyone who signed up and
to the course pro and staff who were very
accommodating.
August Outings
Be sure check our schedule for future
outings. August has a terrific lineup with
Kimberton, Jeffersonville, Wyncote and
Golden Oaks plus the Labor Day weekend
at Penn National. For those not going to
Penn National, a local outing is being coordinated by Pat Kosek and Don Munson
at Linfield Golf Course. Don’t wait for a
better offer, register now! See you on the
links!
and Gene Mammone.
A total of $210 was collected and 1/2
went to the winner and 1/2 went to First
Tee on behalf of our Chapter. Both
Rene' and Deb would like to make this
an annual event. We all enjoy our fun,
fellowship and fairways and would like to
give something back! We challenge you
to join in next year. Thanks to the following people for playing: Tom, Sally,
Gene, Joe, Pat, Maria, Debbie K.,
Jen,Tricia, Bruce, Shel, Paul O., Troy,
Dan, Joann, Karen E., Rich, Liz, Paul
C., Deb D. & Rene'
