Alesha Wong in Year 12 has been
awarded a full scholarship to study
through Varsity Education at
Peterhouse College, Cambridge
during August on a Holiday Course.
Alesha will study International
Relations with Politics and
Economics, with one to one guidance from a Cambridge lecturer on how to secure a place at Cambridge after A’levels. Well done Cambridge. Well
done Alesha.
The first meeting of the newly appointed Year 13
Student Leadership Team took place this week. It is
exciting to think what the Year 13 pupils will achieve
in their final year at Tenby; several students are
thinking of Oxford, Cambridge and other world class
universities as future destinations.
TIS Year 11 Prefects
54 Year 10 pupils applied for Leadership positions,
and 16 have been duly appointed after submitting
letters of application, and following extensive
interviews.

Seven Tenby students submitted personal

Thank you to the English Department for arranging
last week’s Eco debates in class, with Finals at the
end of the week. Dragons’ Teams were placed in five
out of the eight available places, winning both Year
Group sections.
Golden Girls
The PE Department struck gold again last week when
the Under 15 Girls Team outplayed all top teams in
the Finals Tournament held at Tenby last Thursday.
The victorious Tenby Team did not drop a set. Please
see the Sports section in this Newsletter for more
details.
The timetable for Tuesday is :

Traffic Police
A meeting took place earlier
this week between the Setia
Police and both SST and TIS
members of the PA. The
Police will support the
School daily between
14:00hrs and 15:00hrs
supervising traffic into the
School.
The Police have also been invited to come into the
School campus to prevent ‘double parking’ and
generally help with traffic flow.
Please will parents / drivers stop going round and
round the external mini-roundabout and also not stop
at the zebra crossing to collect children.
Vehicles must NOT be driven out of the external car
park ignoring the no entry sign and accessing the
highway; this highly dangerous behaviour must stop.
Please can parents who witness such irresponsible
behaviour report car number plates to the School.
Royal Welsh Guards Visit
Earlier this week the School held its Annual Awards’
Evening and celebrated Pupils’ Achievement both
in and out of the classroom. The Deputy British
High Commissioner, Paul Rennie, attended the
occasion as Guest Speaker, recalling his time
when he was a 16 year old (as did Head of
Secondary, Iain Sallis in a separate, thought
provoking, opening speech). Mr.Rennie
emphasised the importance of lifelong learning
being fun. Speeches were also very well-delivered
by Head Boy, Christopher Chan, and Head Girl,
Janice Yap. The proceedings were concluded by
the Campus Principal inviting pupils to :
“Learn to dare (have a vision, a dream… dreams
can come true), learn to share, and learn to care.”
Year 11 Dinner at the Maya Hotel
The Year 11 pupils arranged a wonderfully
festive evening last Friday which was attended by
senior staff who were incorrectly allocated a VIP
Table… the Year 11’s were the VIP’s on this
happy occasion.
Year 13 Dinner at The Majestic Hotel
Year 13 pupils have arranged a Dinner at The Majestic Hotel on 28th June 2016, and invited Year 12
to join them for their ‘Farewell Dinner’.
The School receives Drummers from the Royal Welsh
Guards next Tuesday 21st June 2016 who are visiting
Malaysia and thereafter participating in a special
Commonwealth Memorial Ceremony honouring the
dead from the Two World Wars (including those who
fell at the Battle of the Somme in 1916) at the Tugu
Memorial on Sunday 26th June 2016 at 11:00hrs. The
School has been invited to provide music and will be
represented by a String & Harp Ensemble, for this
solemn occasion which will be attended by the
Queen’s son, HRH Prince Andrew.
Setia Eco Billboard
The School gives notice that shortly a very large
sign will be erected on the perimeter of the
grounds (towards the Toll) publicising Setia’s ever
expanding building of residential accommodation.
The Billboard may not enhance the appearance of
the School’s Playing Field… but because of the
arrangement the School has with the Setia
developers that the School has been obliged to
allow the erection of such a sign.
Model United Nations Conference this weekend
17th,18th, 19th June 2016
For the second successive year, the School hosts over
200 delegates from numerous international Schools to
discuss and debate important world issues.

Eco Fair 2016
It was carnival time again on Thursday 19th May and Friday 20th May 2016 from 10:00-16:00hrs
to host our second Eco Fair in Tenby Square, Cafeteria and around the Eco Interactive Hub in
front of the Auditorium. These two days events clearly demonstrated the enthusiastic
participation and involvement of the entire whole school community together with partnership
with the outside community to display for sale a wide range of products ranging from coconut
products, fruity jams, seeds, baby plants, from garden to table food and drinks, miniature
gardens to garden protective gloves and UV protective sleeves.
Before the start of the Fair at 10:00hrs on Thursday 19th May 2016, children were busily putting
up their big creative recyclable items on the floors of Tenby Square. We had the renown Burj
Kalifah,world’s tallest skyscraper set up at Tenby Square using aluminum cans by Form 5S

amidst the Playhouse constructed by F2M using mineral bottles of different sizes . At the far
end nearer to the Foyer, the twin towers made using aluminium cans were put up on a table.
Besides was a twin –seater sofa made out of many brown boxes folders which can support the
weight of two adults. This sofa was the creation of a group of students from Std 5S.
At the same time, the Parents’ Associations members of TIS & SST were significantly involved
in setting up their stalls in the strategic red canopy tent. SST parents were selling a wide range
of colourful pots, natural insecticides and fungicides, attractive watering cans and even organic
soil.TIS parents had their Penan bags, a wide range of organic food and eggs and lots of old
books for sale .Both groups had a roaring business for the two days.
Green @ Setia Alam stall had an interactive activity for children to fix their own terrarium by
buying their kits. The students enjoyed themselves at the various stalls during the break times of
both the days .The entire Tenby Square was bustled with activities during break times and after
school.
After 14:00hrs of both days, the children too showcased their work on creative items using
recyclables, information about environment and environmental solutions. We had altogether
56 groups working on Creative items, 16 groups on Environmental Information and ten groups
on Environmental Solutions.
The Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water too set up an informative stall in the
Cafeteria to give awareness to our students, teachers and visitors regarding Green Lifestyle
whereby they introduced simple steps to a green environment. The children were tested on the
information shared through a number of activities and the officers also answered their questions
regarding environment.
Down at the Eco Interactive Hub, there was a booth providing a solution to healthy growth of
vegetables within the limitations of space in our homes. Everyone visiting the booth would be
informed about this system called aquaponics. The water in the tank is always kept clean
without any use of chemicals.
On Thursday 19th May 2016 afternoon, Mr H demonstrated on how to turn kitchen waste and
dry leaves into useful compost for plant growth. These actions attracted a number of our young
children and we hope it will be a good start for our Eco Champions to embark on to improve the
quality of our plants’ growth!
On Friday 20th May 2016 afternoon, Ms Jessie Chew, Education Manager of Eco Schools
Programmes delivered a talk on some environmental issues affecting us and how our Eco
Champions in school can play an active role to conserve the environment.
The fair ended very well with our students more enthusiastic to love and care more for the
environment.

Opening of Eco Info Centre
This Info Centre was designed and constructed in April 2015 with the purpose of providing
information about our Tenby Schools’ Eco themes and initiatives to visitors. This space is also
used for teaching and learning about nature for a small group of students.
In conjunction with the opening of Eco Fair 2016, this centre was opened by Mr Andrew Auster,
Campus Principal of Tenby Schools, SEP on Friday 20th May at 10:00hrs in a ceremony
attended by Senior Leadership Team, parents, designer Ms Rina Ho of Terra Gardens, teachers
and students.

Great Achievement in Ice Skating
On Saturday 30th April 2016, Laetitia Chai (F3A) competed in a skating competition that was
held at the Royale Ice Skating Rink, the Curve. She was ranked 1st both in the ‘Stroking’ and
‘Jump and Spin’ categories. She had also won the 2nd place in the ‘Interpretive’ category
where she choreographed her performance using a randomly given 1-minute song. She was
3rd in ‘Surprise’ category where she was challenged to enter the event not knowing their
performance until the event began. Laetitia will now be representing Malaysia in joining the
upcoming Asia level competition, “Skate Asia 2016”, which will be held in Sunway Pyramid
Ice Skating Rink this year. Congratulations and well done to Laetitia and we wish her all the
best in the upcoming “Skate Asia 2016”!

Another Great Achievement in Fencing
Eu-Wen (F1S) clinched his Bronze Medal in the 2016 Selangor Youth Open for Fencing
which took place on Saturday 4th June 2016 at the Stadium Subang Jaya. It was a great
experience for Eu-Wen to compete with other U14 fencers from Singapore, Hong Kong,
Taiwan and also Malaysia in the ‘Sabre’ category. Congratulations & well done to Eu-Wen!

STANDARD 1 EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING TRIP TO SUNWAY WILD LIFE ZOO PARK

Standard 1 students had a grand field day at the Sunway Wild Life Zoo Park. This park is the first and
only fully interactive animal-themed attraction in Malaysia with more than 150 species of amazing
animals from around the world. It features many exotic, small and friendly animals from a range of
birds, reptiles & mammals.
The visit on Wednesday 4th May 2016 was an extension of teaching and learning about animals. It
was organised to fuel our extended learning opportunity experience that took place outside the
classroom. For this credit-bearing learning experience, four subjects were identified namely English,
Bahasa Melayu, Science and Mathematics to produce task sheets for the students. The objectives of
the visit were as follows:

We arrived at the park in the morning for a guided tour. The wild life ranger brought us around the zoo
in an informative and interactive tour. Students were able to interact with a host of exotic animals
including the majestic white lions, cotton top tamarin, pygmy marmosets, meerkats, prairie dogs,
miniature horses, otters, sun bears, panthers, tigers, eagles, hornbills, peacocks, pythons and many
more!
The exited children were allowed to get up close and personal with some
animals at the Wildlife Encounters, observing the animal’s natural antics.

At Tiger Land and White Lion Kingdom, we were able to come face-to-face with the majestic cats in
their borderless glass enclosure.
Tiger Land - A beautiful home of Rock and Louie, the resident Siberian tigers. White Lion
Kingdom - Meet Zola and Zuri, the first pair of white lions in the city.
We too made our way to the Pet Village, where the students got the chance to pet as well as feed the
animals there. This interesting part of the zoo is it has a few giant tortoises, rabbits as well as guinea
pigs. This whole section is reasonably well shaded from the harsh sun so students can fully enjoy the
experience. On display near the Pet Village are also meerkats, Southern Cassowary as well as goats.
Students too had a few rounds on the carousel before we departed.
We had a fun and educational day at Sunway Wild Life Zoo Park. It was a priceless experience for all
the students.

STANDARD 2S EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING TRIP
MACARON WORKSHOP & RECYCLING CENTRE

On Tuesday 26th April 2016, 24 students of Standard 2S accompanied by two teachers went to attend
a Macaron Workshop and to a Recycling Centre in Klang. They departed from school at 08:00hrs. On
the bus journey, students were entertained by the tour guide who conducted a Q&A session. A small
token was rewarded to each students with the right answer. The participation of the students was very
positive.
Sharply at 09:15hrs, the group arrived with excitement at the venue. The Macaron workshop was
conducted by Chef Ong. He started with an introduction by displaying all the ingredients and the correct
measurement of dough making was shown. Students were given the chance to pipe the dough on the
tray. Chef Ong demonstrated recipe of macaron filling with different flavours. Again, students were given
the chance to pipe the filling on macaron cookie. The workshop ended with students answering some
worksheets about the demonstration.
The next venue was a recycling centre in Klang. Students were welcomed and served vegetarian lunch.
The organiser spoke about climate change and its consequences to the earth and human race. The
objective of the talk was to create awareness amongst students of the importance to recycle waste.
The talk also ended with a Q&A session and students participated well. Students then were divided into
two groups and were seen sorting recyclables according to cans, plastic and papers in an activity.
Everyone enjoyed themselves very much that day.
The experience at the Macaron Workshop with donning of chef’s hats was memorable. Students have
enjoyed and learnt to make macarons. The trip to the recycling centre was a good exposure to the
students on the importance of recycling.

FORM 1 EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING TRIP TO DARK CAVE AND NATIONAL MUSEUM

On Tuesday 24th May 2016, 77 Form 1 students and seven teachers went on the above trip to the
National Museum and the Dark Cave. Students were divided into seven groups and each group was
led by a teacher. At 08:10hrs, we left the school and started our journey to the Dark Cave. Along the
journey, we were briefed by our tour guide about the attractions in the Dark Cave and how caves are
formed.
We arrived at our destination at about 09:00hrs. Before entering the Cave, students were assembled
at the entrance of the Cave and instructions were given by the tour guide. Subsequently, we entered
into the cave guided by the tour guide. In the Cave, we were able to see a variety of living creatures
such as spiders, worms, bugs, cave crickets, rats and bats. Information about the formation of
stalagmites and stalactites in the Cave were explained by the tour guide.
We disembarked the cave at 11:30hrs and we were brought to McDonald’s to have lunch before
departing to the National Museum. The museum was divided into sections such as Ethnography and
Sculpture, Culture and Tradition. The museum houses four galleries, each with its own theme.
The ground floor showcases the Geographic and Natural History of the Malay Peninsula starting with
the Stone Age (Zaman Paleolitik), the Bronze Age (Zaman Neolitik) and the Iron Age (Zaman Logam).
The second floor is dedicated to the colonial history leading all the way to Independence. Besides
that, the ancient dresses, royal robes, weapons of great rulers and coins of different periods of time
were displayed in the Museum.
We explored the entire museum and left at 15:30hrs. We arrived safely at school by 16:30hrs. On the
whole, it was a very nice experiential learning trip and we had gained valuable experiences from the
trip.

Dear Parents of TIS Primary,
Here is a reminder to book your SLC appointment via the parent portal. A guidance letter was
sent on Tuesday 14th June 2016 to help you through the process.
Next week is the end of Term 3 assessment week. Please ensure your child attends so they can
take their PTE (Progress Test in English) and PTM (Progress Test in Maths). These tests are
completed online for Year 2 to Year 5 and marked externally.
Year 4 Camp
Just before the half term holidays, Year 4 children went on their first camp ever! Children had an
amazing time and made tremendous progress developing further resilience and communication
skills.
The children were brave enough to experience some of the scariest yet most rewarding
activities: Going down a 200 metres flying fox or climbing a 20m-high wall, children did it all.
“Flying fox was so scary but I managed and did not give up! Once I saw that my friends were
going, I was able to control my fears. What an experience! I will definitely do it again!”

Year 1 Learning Assembly
Last week, Year 1 children put up a great show for their parents in the EPC. Their Learning
Assembly themed was ‘Stories People Tell’ and the children had indeed shown their talent at telling
stories through confident narration and amazing acting skills. All the children looked great in their
fantastic costumes. The children and teachers put in a lot of effort to in their production and their
hard work paid off.
The Year 1 team would like to thank all parent helpers involved who had made the show a great
success.
Recently, the Early Years assistant teachers got together to
create some very lovely pieces using recycled tyres. These
painted tyres not only add colour to the Early Years covered area,
they can also be used as seats or tables for outside learning. Well
done to the Early Years team for always exploring ideas to make
the Early Years area a wonderful place for the children. The Early
Years team would like to thank Mr. Khoo, a Tenby parent for the
tyres.

Art Department
Art Walk - This will be a journey of Art around the school. A map will be provided for anyone to
go on an art walk during Art week.
Primary / KS3 exhibition - A joint exhibition between Primary and Secondary art again during
Art week. We will have a wide selection of work on show.
Teacher led workshops - Ms. Hasan, Mr. Mugridge and Mr. Eagleson are holding a workshop
during Monday, Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes. Pupils and teachers can sign up for them
outside our Art department. 20 spots for each workshop. Ms. Hasan will be delivering Mono
printing, Mr. Mugridge will show how to use Green screen and Mr. Eagleson will create clay coil
and pinch pots.
Collaborative canvases. We will have two large canvases that pupils can work on using
expressive painting techniques during Friday lunchtime which will become permanent pieces on
display in the Art department.
Congratulations to Wen Xuan of 8Y who won our second
Friday prize for our 30 Day Drawing Challenge. Another
prize will be handed out this Friday for the best
sketchbook so far. We will have a final prize giving
presentation on Monday 27th June 2016 between 12:20 –
13:00hrs in the Art rooms for the best drawing from each
day (30 chances of winning).

As the undefeated champion for his weight category for five consecutive championships since the
beginning of this year 2016, Bronson Cheah had made a name for himself among the little ones in
Taekwondo CCA at Tenby SEP. Here you can see how popular he was amongst them and how
they celebrated his victory when he won yet another Gold in the recent Kejohanan Taekwondo
Remaja Selangor (MSSS) on Saturday 28th May, 2016.

U15 Boys Volleyball team Bronze of KLISS league
From eight teams (two groups of four teams), Tenby U15 Boys finished first in their group and
progressed to the semi-finals by winning all first round games.
In the bronze medal play-off match Tenby had to face BSKL. Tenby won 2-0 and secured their bronze
medals.
On behalf of PE department, we would like to thank all the players, coaches and parents for all your
support and the excellent volleyball experience. It is amazing to see how the players have grown
throughout the year, not only as a team but in individuals. The players have made us all proud.
U15 Girls Volleyball team Champions of KLISS league
Only seven days after the girls’ proud achievement of winning the U18 KLISS volleyball tournament
the same set of girls won the U15 KLISS tournament. The tournament was again hosted at Tenby
which is quickly becoming a ‘Theatre of Dreams’ for volleyball.
While it might have been easy to assume Tenby would make light work of this age group after the
triumph of a week before – it was not the case. For some reason the girls started each game by giving
the opposition a six point lead. This could have been a ploy to ‘make a game of it’ but it caused
confusion and worry on the sides.
Once the girls did find their stride they played some amazing volleyball and I was able to see the
emergence of different leaders within the team. In each game a different player stepped up and made
an impact and drove the team forward. The serving is improving and on occasions it was just too
much for the opposition. There was even some outstanding spiking at times.
It has been a fantastic season for the team. The external coaches have brought them forward in leaps
and bounds and I can only honestly say it’s been a pleasure to watch and learn.
Congratulations on your team and personal achievements. Well done.

Avril Foong participated in the event representing her team Reach Badminton which was held on 9th to
11th June 2016 at the Powerful Sports Arena, Kepong. Her team managed to reach the quarter final
after battling with the other badminton teams. We look forward to hear more news about Avril in the
future.

Gold medals at Selangor Youth Fencing Open 2016
It has been an excellent year for our School Fencing Team who have competed last Thursday at
Selangor Youth Fencing Open 2016.
Congratulations to:
 Ian Zafir Harris for winning his U12 Gold medal and U14 Silver medal last Thursday at
Selangor Youth Fencing Open 2016
 Phillipa Ong who won U12 and U14 Gold Medals
 Wong Eu Wen for winning U14 Bronze medal
 Tengku Amran for winning U12 Gold medal
Well done to our Fencers! They showed skill and determination to come out on top. These were
excellent wins against strong and competitive teams and they show the depth in our fencing squad.
