4.2 Belluno-Vittorio Veneto. At the foot of the Cansiglio. Belluno is nestled in the lush valley of Val Belluna, between the Alpine foothills and the Dolomite peaks of the Schiara group. Rays of light, fresh air, and peace and quiet best describe this bite-sized city. The winning combination of Venetian and Nordic influence generated a new and original architectural style that fits in perfectly with the mountain scenery. Historical sites of interest include the Cathedral of San Martino (1), Palazzo dei Rettori, and the red municipal building. After passing by the Piave River in an area with some traffic, you’ll follow the levee on the 92 1 Cellina Canal, until you reach the shores of Lake Santa Croce (2). This is the largest lake in the Belluno area and its waters reflect the entire zone of Alpago, a historical and geographic area with deeply rooted traditions; its territory also includes the old-growth forest of Cansiglio, controlled by the Venetian Republic to supply wood for the Arsenal. There is always a gentle breeze blowing over the Lake of Santa Croce, as can be confirmed by the number of people windsurfing and sailing, frequently meeting here for sporting events and regattas. A nice walking/cycling path outfitted 2 with birdwaching towers will allow you to ride right alongside the shores without disturbing the flocks of birds that have found this place to be an ideal habitat. Near Farra d’Alpago, you can turn to take one last look at the Dolomite peaks and then hop back on your bike to tackle the longest descent on the itinerary, which will bring you down the Val Lapisina. The old Strada Statale di Alemagna (state road) has little traffic and passes underneath the high viaducts of the highway. Towards the bottom, you’ll see two lakes that are used to generate electricity – first the Lago Morto and then Restello. The former takes its name (Dead Lake) from the fact that it doesn’t appear to have any inlets, but it is actually fed by Second leg Distance: 44 km Difficulty level: 3 karst springs. The latter is worth stopping at to observe the nearby medieval tower of San Floriano, built in defense of the village of Serravalle (3), which is the final destination of this second leg. 0 BELLUNO A T.
