From the Head Master
This week has been typical of the extraordinary range of
activities enjoyed by all members of the Merchant Taylors’
community. Charitable efforts are in full swing; visiting
speakers, not least to our newly-minted Law Society, have
entertained and challenged the boys; I personally enjoyed
a terrific Burns Night supper — my thanks to the Yardarms
for organising a wonderful evening.
We celebrate the achievements of Lower-Sixth former Hugo
Anthony on the front cover of this edition. Hugo is to be
congratulated on keeping his title as Great Britain’s Junior
Mens Champion in Freestyle Kayaking. On the astroturf, we
saw equally brave and courageous performances from our
hockey players, which underlined our ability to compete
with the very best in school hockey.
Our budding entrepreneurs, too, have much to feel proud
about. Young Enterprise teams were out selling their wares
in Milton Keynes, winning accolades for the quality of their
products. Their next stop is the Intu centre. If you can spare
the time on Saturday, please do support their efforts.
Finally, we are most grateful to Northwood and Pinner
Liberal Synagogue for hosting the entirety of our Divisions
on Wednesday, where the boys were privileged to hear
from Holocaust survivor Susan Pollack. It was a valuable
opportunity for them to hear first hand the reality of crimes
perpetrated, to commemorate victims, and to sustain
dialogue between history and memory.
Milton Keynes Young Enterprise Fair
Aakash Mohindra (L6th) writes:
On January 31st members of the Young
Enterprise group, CityFlavour (namely
Govind Grewal, Amit Kejriwal, Aakash
Mohindra, Devan Shah, Anuj Bhalla, and
Xavier Castelino), journeyed to Milton
Keynes to partake in a prestigious trade
fair, which involved almost forty groups
from across the region. CityFlavour’s
aim was to sell as many copies of its
unique cookery book, The Little Book
of Restaurant Recipes, whilst also
tackling the tough questions from a
panel of judges. The cookbook was
highly regarded by shoppers and judges,
and the latter awarded the CityFlavour
cookbook the accolade of second best
product. It was a wonderful selling
experience, and an extremely fun and
engaging day for all involved.

Holocaust Memorial
As part of their PSHCE lessons the Divisions have been
involved in several activities and events to commemorate the
Holocaust. During PSHCE lessons the boys have been reading
about a range of people who were affected by the events of
1933-45 and beyond. These stories ranged from those by
young people surviving in ghettos by foraging for food to an
account by an Italian Tour de France winner who used his job
as a messenger to smuggle money and papers to prisoners
across the Alps. The boys then participated in a creative
writing activity based on the person they had researched.
Some chose to retell their tales through stories, while others
used empathy and wrote letters home from the perspective of
their chosen person.

On February 3rd all Divisions were welcomed to Northwood
and Pinner Liberal Synagogue for a Holocaust workshop.
The boys were split into small groups where they examined
a variety of Nuremburg Laws and discussed the effects they
would have had on the Jewish population. After this, they had
the honour of listening to the tale of Holocaust survivor Susan
Pollack, a Hungarian Jew who lost both of her parents and
was sent to a concentration camp. The boys made the most of
this rare opportunity and asked insightful questions.
We thank Northwood and Pinner Synagogue for this
enriching experience and look forward to visiting again
next year.

Charity Drive FIFA 16 Tournament
George Solomou (L6th) writes:
Last week Charity Drive ran a FIFA 16 tournament in the Great
Hall. It was a very close fought battle, involving students from

all year groups. Monday’s final pitted Lower-Sixth-Former Joe
Savage against Fourth-Former Shrian Thobani. The nail-biting
match ended in a 4-0 victory for Joe. Congratulations to all of our
sportsmen! £383.94 was raised for charity. Many thanks to all!

House Chess: Semi-Finals
Once again the teams were equally matched, with Manor taking
on Walter and Andrewes taking on Clive. Walter managed to
edge to victory over Manor in the last few minutes of The Hour.
Andrewes and Clive were left in suspense as, though they had
each won two games, the contest between Mohammed Manji
and Paul Eid was too close to call. They each had lost a bishop,
and whilst Mohammed had quite a force attacking Paul had
a very solid defence. Their game was finished on Thursday

morning – this time using with chess clocks! Eventually
Paul managed to capture Mohammed’s queen and secured a
checkmate. This carried Clive through to the final.
Final details:
February 9th at 1.45pm in Ma31: Walter v Clive. This match
will be played with chess clocks.

Thirds and Upper Thirds were joined by their counterparts
from Merchant Taylors’ Prep for tales of intrigue and horror
performed by storyteller Ben Haggarty to celebrate National
Storytelling Week.

The History of Merchant Taylors’
School: Charterhouse Square
Merchant Taylors’ School used to occupy a site near
Charterhouse Square. As the name implies, the school was
founded by the Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors
in 1561. Sir Thomas White, who founded St. John’s College,
Oxford, was one of the school’s chief benefactors, securing
university scholarships for a number of Merchant Taylors’
pupils. Although originally at St Lawrence Pountney in the
City, it relocated to a site near Charterhouse Square shortly
after Charterhouse School vacated its original location in 1872.
By 1929, however, the owners of Merchant Taylors’ School had
decided that London was too congested and that the playing
fields were too far away, so it was moved to Sandy Lodge,
Hertfordshire. The school subsequently sold the land to St.
Bartholomew’s Hospital, which had been the previous owners,
having bought the site in 1349 from the Master of the Spital
Croft hospital. The Charterhouse Square site is still used as a
medical school to this day.

Physicists go nuclear!
Lower-Sixth physicists extended their study of particle physics through short presentations to their class. Topics included the
Higgs Boson and LHC, Antimatter and the potential misuse of nuclear energy, and also materials such as Titanium, Graphene,
Aerogel, and those used in space travel.

GCHQ release the “WORLD’S
HARDEST PUZZLE”
So what is this nono-sense?
We’re holding a competition. It involves a number of
increasingly complicated puzzles designed to test your logic.
And the winner will receive a big prize! First part of the
challenge will be a nonogram. Nonograms are picture logic
puzzles, in which cells in a grid must be colored or left blank
according to numbers at the side of the grid to reveal a hidden
picture.
We’re doing this because GCHQ (Government
Communications Headquarters) has also released a collection
of puzzles to the public. We’ve just decided to make our own.
Unfortunately, no one has been able to solve the GCHQ
puzzles just yet but around 30,000 have come close.
You will end up with a QR code (not the actual code) that
you will need to scan with any QR code app. When you get a
result from the nonogram, scan the picture with your phone
and you’ll get the first part of the puzzle complete. It’ll be
some words, which, when put together with the answers from
forthcoming puzzles, will form a sentence. We’ll release the
next puzzle in next week’s issue.

Burns Night
Once again a fabulous evening was enjoyed by all. The drinks
reception began earlier than usual, allowing many returning
guests to catch-up with friends from last year. Master of
Ceremonies Andy Forbes was, however, heard above the din
and all adjourned to the Dining Room at 7.30, trooping behind
piper Dixie Ingram. A truly memorable address to the haggis
followed. David Fayer and his team provided a wonderful
dinner, with the ‘Cock a Leekie’ soup a resounding favourite.

Music was provided by the Kafoozalum County Band.
Returning dancers helped novices and before long all were
doing the Eightsome Reel. Thanks, too, to John Reynolds for
logistical support and to the Watersports’ boys who assisted
so ably throughout the evening.

1st XI
Lost – 0-6
MOM: Michael Brown
After the midweek success in the Cup
the MTS boys were ready for their
toughest test of the season with a game
against Reed’s. The game started in the
worst possible way. The boys were slow
getting out of the blocks and conceded
two soft goals from lack of marking. As
the first half progressed the MTS boys
started to build some momentum but
Reed’s once again were ruthless hitting
us on the counter to make it 0-3. Again
Taylors’ pressed forward in search of a
goal before half-time but again it was
Reed’s who converted from a corner to
go into half time 0-4 up. The second
half was much better from MTS as we
began to dominate periods of play.
With chances being created the ball just
couldn’t find the back of the net, as MTS
time and again were not rewarded for
their play. As the boys pressed on Reed’s
scored two more goals on the counter
and tha game was beyond us. It was a
disappointing performance but a great
lesson has hopefully been learned that a
good start is vital at this level.
2nd XI
Draw – 2-2

After a free scoring start to the season
there were no doubts prior to the game
that Reed’s would offer a far tougher
test. From the first 10 minutes Taylors’
dominated the game with constant
movement tearing holes in the Reed’s
defence while in possession and a high
work rate and discipline in defence
forcing turn overs high up the pitch.
This pressure was rewarded with a well
taken goal by Kiran Reddy leaving the
opposition shocked. The much older
Reed’s side fought their way back into
the game to get a goal back, with both
sides playing a high standard of fast-

paced hockey. The highlight of the
game was certainly our second goal with
superb rapid movement of the ball from
a Taylors’ 16 yard hit to the opposition
D. The move was then finished with a
wonderful diving deflection by Ashane
Wijesuriya at the back post leaving the
goalkeeper motionless. The physicality
and relentless pressure exerted by the
Reed’s press began to tell in the second
half but some beautiful tackling by
Nikhil Rawal and Roman Murphy as
well as a string of lightning saves from
Ben Gould keeping Taylors’ just ahead.
In the last minute of the game this
pressure told with an unseen deflection
by a Reed’s forward levelling the game.
Whilst it is galling to not come away
with the victory, this was a superb
performance by MTS and a superb
platform of keep building upon for the
rest of the season.
3rd XI
Lost – 0-9
MOM: Thomas Oakton
As a 3rd XI we are very much in
the business of creating a learning
environment. This was a superb

opportunity to play against much more
experienced players and many of our
younger players adapted and improved
their play throughout the game. Tom
Oakton worked tirelessly throughout the
game whilst Tom Lawrence and Gabriel
Sayers kept our shape at the back. Keep
up the good work.
4th XV
Lost – 0-9
MOM: Selvan Senthilkumaran
Taylors’ 4th XI played Reed’s 3rd XI in
what turned out to be a very one-sided
match. The game started with Taylors’
finding ourselves under pressure
immediately, and we spent much of
the first half camped in or around the
D. They defended well, playing with
a real desire to keep Reed’s at bay,
succeeding for the first 15 minutes.
However, once Reed’s scored, the
floodgates opened and Taylors’ ended
the half 5-0 down. The second half
was similar, with Taylors’ holding on
in the early exchanges, but conceding
another four excellently worked goals.
Senthilkumaran must be commended
for his efforts in goal. Whilst he
conceded nine, the opposing coach
commented on how many more it would
have been without him. I predict big
things in the future from the current 4th
XI keeper.
5th XI
Lost – 0-4
Scorer: Farooq Shitta-Bey
An even contest for most of the game,
where we outclassed Reed’s for skill and
teamwork. However, they outmatched
us for directness and workrate and,
crucially, confidence in the final third.
Whilst this may have meant they were
worthy winners, the scoreline was a
travesty.
U15A
Lost – 0-6
MOM: Joe Qureshi
The U15A met their match against a
determined and athletic Reed’s side.
The visitors were on top from the start,
with two early Taylors’ mistakes gifting
Reed’s easy goals. Forced to chase
the game, Taylors’ attempted to play
offensive hockey, though Reed’s were
quick to exploit this, leading 4-0 by
half-time. Despite the best attempts of
GK Oskar Ford and MOM full back Joe
Qureshi, the visitors converted two more
chances in the second half to complete a
comprehensive 6-0 victory over the MTS
side. Rather than being bitter about the
performance, the visiting side taught
Taylors’ a lesson in hockey and one
they are aiming to learn from, showing
patience when not in possession of the
ball and then quickly striking when
gaining possession.
U15B
Draw – 2-2
Scorers: Sheikh x 2
MOM: Zak Sheikh
Reed’s was always going to be a test as
they are regarded as one of the strongest
hockey schools nationally. The game
was electric and both teams played
some exciting hockey. The goals came
quite quickly for both teams which
set up the potential for a grand finish.
Unfortunately it was not to be. MTS
I felt were unlucky not to come away
with a win as a number of chances were
narrowly missed in the dying minutes.
Zak Sheikh was awarded the man of
the match with two great goals - one of
them being a wonder goal! Every player
in the team played exceptionally well
especially in the 2nd half. Well done

MOM: Nick Gillyon
At 1-0 up at half-time, having dominated
possession and territory, the boys
were in a good position. A victory was
in our grasp but two late goals from
Reed’s ended the game in a hugely
disappointing fashion. Still, it was a
great team effort from all and so many
positives to take forward.
U14A
Draw – 1-1

MOM: David Cherry
The U14A MTS side travelled to Reed’s
knowing that they would face their
toughest opponents so far. The team
implemented the half court press
effectively from the outset. The first
half saw Reed’s pin the MTS side back,
however they struggled to breakdown
our superb defence. Reed’s did net late
in the first half, and deservedly so. The
second half saw Reed’s enjoy a large
amount of possession but the MTS side
hit back well on the counter attack and
created a host of chances, especially
through Finn Edwards and David
Cherry. The MTS side finally got some
reward when Rishi Pattni netted after a
fast counter attack. The MTS side could
have won the game and had the more
shots on goal. The score finished 1-1 and
man of the match went to David Cherry
for his outstanding speed in attack.
U14B
Draw – 1-1
Scorer: Lawrie Lee
MOM: Samir Sardana
Reed’s always provide a tough test,
and so it proved to be - particularly
having played out an easy win last
weekend - in a high quality, highly
entertaining match. Although MTS
will be disappointed with conceding
right at the death, in truth a draw was
a fair result - despite MTS being in the
lead for most of the match. It is clashes
like these when hockey is at its most
enjoyable, and also leads to the greatest
improvement. The challenge now is to
replicate this performance consistently.
Every player can feel proud of their
contribution, but special mention must
go to Samir Sardana for a composed,
skilful and instrumental performance
in centre midfield against an excellent
opposite number.
U14C
Lost – 1-3
MTS started the game off briskly
and quickly took the lead in the first
half. The boys had the majority of
possession but didn’t manage to convert
it into goals, despite a number of good
chances. Reed’s GK did a good job of
denying the boys a second goal. Reed’s
equalised late in the first half. During the
second half MTS started to tire and this
was evident through the deteriorating
pass completion rate. This was also
due to the fact that many of the players
were playing their first game together
this season. Reed’s were quick to take
advantage of the tiring MTS boys and
scored two more goals to win the game
3-1.
U14D
Win – 1-0
Scorer: Adam Chatoo
MOM: Haydon Carr
Midway through the second-half, a ball

hurtled a few inches above the ground,
skimming like the bomb from The Dam
Busters upon the pitch. Its course saw
it wend its way to MTS’ goal. Luckily, in
that brief moment, I remembered we had
a fine keeper in Ben Chan, well trained
in the arts of goalkeeping over many,
many minutes previous to the game
(approximately 2). Ben had already kept
out a full fusillade of shots by listening to
an inner voice which told him where to
stand. So our faith in him had a grounding
in experience. But still that ball skipped
at a perilously fast pace and within the
moment there was that heart-shattering
sound to any team, the crash of plastic
globe against wood as our goal was
breached. The team seemed unperturbed
by the goal we had conceded. Play
proceeded, our captain Jodhvir Khera,
cajoling MTS forward with our adopted
chant, ‘Tora, Tora, Tora’. Haydon Carr did
not cease to be stalwart like Diomedes
in his arête - hence his man of the match
award. And in the final moment, Adam
Chatoo delivered a deft shot from a
difficult angle and scored. After the game,
I congratulated the team on their welldeserved draw away from home. The ‘goal’
Reed’s had scored was in fact not so as it
had been scored from 30 yards out. The
D’s basked in away-victory glory.

Hugo Anthony retains freestyle kayaking title
Lower Sixth former Hugo Anthony retained his title as GB Junior Mens Champion last weekend. Although given a place in the
GB team because of his title as World Junior Champion, Hugo wanted to compete in the full selection process. Spread over two
weekends at two locations, the GB selections saw Hugo competing in the Mens heats in which he came 5th overall which bodes
well for when he moves up from Juniors to Seniors in two years’ time. The next team GB event is the European Championships
at Plattling in Bavaria.

House Swimming
The annual House Swimming competition took place over
two Thursday afternoons (most recently on 4th February) to
allow boys the opportunity to represent their House and, at
the same time, experience the thrill of competitive swimming!
There were individual events in all four strokes, plus a 4 X
25m medley and 4 X 25m front crawl event. Boys were only
able to compete in a maximum of two events each in order to
avoid unfair stacking of the races by eager Heads of House!
One of the fantastic points of note which we see every
year at the House Swimming event is the support which is
demonstrated for all levels of swimmers. We have in our
school some exceedingly talented and aquatically gifted
boys, as well as some who simply enjoy participating. Many
congratulations go to all boys who put themselves forward for
the event.

2nd XI
Draw – 1-1
MTS 2nd XI faced their first test of the season vs a strong
Bancroft’s side and acquitted themselves well drawing 1-1.
The result could, and maybe should, have been more in
favour of MTS as they were the better if the sides. Many of the
boys were representing the school for the first time and did
brilliantly. Ollie Fox was excellent down the left wing causing
defenders trouble, as was a strong Ben Wood in the heart of

defence. Dan Loftus, the captain, scored the MTS goal; with
the ball bobbling around after a corner it was poked goalwards
and, after a slight deflection, found its way into the goal. A few
more chances occurred with Dan Surkes hitting a good shot
from outside the box and Joachim Lollesgaard testing the
keeper, however no further goals were scored. The opposition
goal was similar to the MTS goal, rather scrappy, and it left
the stronger side looking a little deflated. The game ended in
a rather rushed fashion, neither side looking like they would
score. The next fixture is on 3rd February, and the boys will be
looking to improve on their strong start!

OMT Alex Adamou on how the Law
impacts everyday decisions
Aakash Mohindra (L6th) writes:
On Monday 1st February at the Design Centre, the newly
founded Law Society welcomed OMT Alex Adamou, a former
pupil who left Taylors’ in 2011. Alex read Law at the University
of Sussex and is currently completing his Bar Professional
Training Course at BPP Law School in Holborn. We welcomed
Alex back to the school to give a talk to the Sixth Form about

his journey from finishing at MTS in 2011 to where he is now as
a law student, as well as introducing a series of weekly seminars
on how the law impacts everyday life and decisions, especially
for students who are currently unaware of what the law is in
certain areas of importance. The talk proved to be extremely
engaging and informative and we look forward to welcoming
him again soon.
