2014 Bergen County Teen Arts Festival
Bergen County is honored to sponsor and host the 2014 Bergen County
Teen Arts Festival. Now in its 39th year, this wonderful event gives a voice
to our students by showcasing their extraordinary talents.
The Teen Arts Festival continues to fuel our imagination, while providing
the youth of Bergen County with the confidence to succeed in future
endeavors.
We are proud to have served nearly 125,000 students, teachers and
administrators over the years and salute the artists who have enriched
Bergen County with their vision.
Kathleen A. Donovan
Bergen County Executive
A Message from
B. Kaye Walter, Ph.D.
President, Bergen Community College
“Art is the window to man's soul. Without it, he would never be able to see beyond his
immediate world; nor could the world see the man within.” Former First Lady Claudia
“Lady Bird” Johnson
Welcome to Bergen Community College.
What speaks to you? Is it the words in novels? Or
the melodies of music? Perhaps it’s the rhythm of
dance?
No matter what segment of the arts speaks to you,
today is an opportunity to embrace it. During today’s sessions, you’ll visit
with industry professionals and teachers who will help inspire you and
encourage you to learn.
That’s why the College remains such an appropriate host for the Teen Arts
Festival each year. The College is a place for discoveries; a place for
learning; a place for inspiration. Each year, our faculty serve as mentors for
approximately 16,000 students, helping direct young men and women like
yourselves toward their goals.
With that in mind, it is not only my hope that you enjoy the experience of
the Teen Arts Festival, but also your time on our campus. I hope it provides
you with a window into your future and inspires you to learn more about
our school. Bergen has more than 140 academic degree and certificate
programs that prepare students for transfer to some of the best four-year
schools in the country – or for entry directly into a career.
Again, welcome to our campus – I hope you find what speaks to you …
and one of those things is Bergen Community College.
E. Carol Messer
Director, 2004-2014
Bergen County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs
Twenty-six years ago, in 1988, former Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs
(DCHA) Director Ruth Van Wagoner tapped Carol Messer as the DCHA’s newest
full-time employee. Serving as its Arts Program Coordinator, she gained wide
experience as Grants Administrator of Bergen’s $100,000+ arts re-grant program. She
was also the editor of the Bergen Arts Connection, an experienced grant writer,
worked on long-range planning, cultural assessments, arts roundtables, special
projects, marketing and publicity, community cultural collaborations, and much,
much more. When she was appointed the Division’s third director in 2004,
succeeding Ann Romano, she expanded and applied her creative talents and abilities
to the county’s history and preservation programs, and to managing eight county
historic sites’ complicated restoration and preservation projects.
A native Alabamian and youthful resident of Illinois, arts and culture have been a part of Carol’s life from the
beginning. With a BFA in Fine Arts from Auburn University, she completed two years of MFA studies at the
University of Kentucky, where she concentrated on sculpture and taught stone and metal plate lithography.
Her lithograph series inspired by Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass was published by the Southern Literary
Review in 1971. While teaching art history and fine arts at the college level, she completed an Arts Associate
degree in Museum Studies from Vincennes University, IN. Before working for the Division, she served as an
exhibition curator and educator at the Beaumont Art Museum, TX, the Museum of East Texas, Lufkin, and at
the Bergen Museum of Art and Science. As a professional artist, Carol pursued drawing and sculpture for
many years, exhibiting widely in the Midwest, and having her work exhibited and sold by several New York
City galleries.
With that background, there can be no doubt of Carol’s dedication to Bergen County’s Teen Arts Program.
Some of Carol’s past endeavors include participating in and helping to establish community choruses and
theatre, writing poetry, and lecturing about European and Asian ceramics. She is a passionate genealogist,
writing the 200-year history of her family’s migration from colonial Virginia to Tennessee and Alabama. Two
years ago she was able to travel to England to study the history and architecture of its cathedrals.
For ten years as the DCHA’s Director, Carol has dedicated her intelligence, experience, creativity and more
time than most people realize – regularly working weekends and evenings - nurturing the county’s arts,
history and preservation community, and our local artists, actors, dancers, musicians, historians,
preservationists, educators and students. She has vigorously represented and promoted Bergen County’s
cultural community to her colleagues in other county cultural agencies and to N.J.’s State Arts Council and
Historical Commission.
Carol has what few have: a true and positive vision of a thriving cultural environment that we as a community
can create right here in Bergen County in the 21st century.
Carol – Thank you for your 26 years of dedication.
Teen Arts Festival Mission and Thanks
A celebration of the alliance of young people and the arts, the 2014 Teen Arts Festival is founded on
the belief that the arts are an indispensable expression of self and an essential language. Through
workshops in all the arts disciplines, the Festival strives to engage each student in a deeper level of
artistry and professionalism. Through critiqued performances and exhibits, the Festival showcases
the myriad and extraordinary talents of middle and high school students and their teachers.
A prime benefit of the Festival is the opportunity it provides students to validate themselves as artists
by spending a day in the company of professional artists who participate in creative fields at many
different levels. Offering further enrichment, the Visual Arts Committee presents a refreshing
symposium on creativity for teachers during the Festival.
The Division applauds the outstanding artists, teachers, critiquers and moderators who lend their
professional artistry to the festival by leading workshops, critiquing the performances and art exhibit,
and maintaining a smooth flow of events at the performing sites. Without the spirited contributions
of these remarkable people, the Festival would not be possible, nor would its lasting effect on our
teenagers be so profound.
We thank the many volunteers who donate their valuable time today at the festival. Their
participation – giving necessary directions and keeping workshops and performance sites quiet and
running on time – is instrumental to the reputation of the Bergen County Teen Arts Festival as an
award-winning arts-in-education program. We hope that every volunteer will take some of their free
time during the course of the day to enjoy the Festival by taking in a workshop, seeing a student
performance, or viewing the outstanding art exhibit in the cafeteria of the Main Building.
With over 3,500 students participating The Bergen County Teen Arts Festival is one of the largest,
most comprehensive arts-in-education festivals for teenagers in the state of New Jersey. Through the
interaction of artists, students, teachers, and volunteers, the Festival helps the Division achieve its
goal of encouraging and strengthening the creative abilities of young people and increasing their
access to the arts. Thank you all!

Teen Arts Festival Special Art Exhibition
The Teen Arts Festival Advisory Board and Visual Art Planning Committee are proud to display a
sampling of the talent of all students by additionally displaying a selected number of pieces of visual
art from the festival. From all the art on display on the festival day one work from each school will
be selected to be exhibited in the lobby of the Bergen County Administration Building, located
adjacent to the Bergen County Courthouse. The Bergen County Administration Building is an
extremely busy place with thousands of workers and visitors passing through the lobby each week.
It is an excellent location; each year many positive comments are made by visitors and employees.
The exhibit will run from Wednesday, June 18, 2014 through Wednesday, July 2, 2014. There will
be a reception for all participating artists in the exhibit on Wednesday evening, June 18 at 6 PM. All
parents and teachers are also invited. The reception will be in the Bergen County Administration
Building.
The art will be removed the morning of Thursday, July 3 and brought upstairs to the Cultural &
Historic Affairs office on the fourth floor. Artists are expected to make arrangements to pick up their art in
our office no later than Friday, July 25, 2014. Teen Arts will not be responsible for any art left in our office
after July 25th.
Please note that no art can be displayed in the Administration Building lobby unless it is suitable for
hanging, i.e. eye-hooks & wire, and we have in our possession (on the day of the festival,) a signed
Release of Liability form from each artist and their parent(s).
If your piece has been chosen, you will find a note attached to your art saying that Teen Arts Staff
will remove the art at the end of the day and bring it to our offices in preparation for the exhibit. All
art chosen must have been prepared for hanging on our wire display panels, as well as having a
Release of Liability form. If you need to have your art prepared for hanging - YOU must get it done
and bring it to our office no later than Monday - June 16, 2014 or it will not be included in the
exhibition.
Any questions concerning the art display should be addressed to:

POETRY & ILLUSTRATION WALL
9:00 AM – 1:00 PM Continuous
Room L159
The Poetry Wall will be an exciting place to
practice the freedom of expression through poetry.
An entire wall invites you to create your own
poem, add a line to an ongoing collective poem, or
write a poem inspired by a poem you found on the
wall that day. You can write a line, a stanza, or a
whole poem. You can write a quote from a favorite
poem as inspiration for other poets. You can even
illustrate a poem that has been written on the wall.
Be sure to sign your work with your name and the
school you attend. Visit early in the day and return
later to see what has been added and to read
feedback on your work. We will provide the blank
mural and magic markers. The possibilities are
endless! Come leave your mark on this exciting
collaborative poetic work of art! Help us create a
truly collaborative wall of poetry.
The Poet’s Voice – Open Microphone. Bring your
writing and proclaim it to the universe! Not a
Slam; not Improv! Get your good stuff published –
out in the open to an audience of your peers. Read
your own work or select something from other
great poets. A poetry library will be available for
you to choose from. Come and share your writing
with an appreciative audience, or just sit and listen
to support your friends.
Poetry On The Line – Pick a poem and hang yours
up for picking if you want to. Brazil’s Northeast
poets hang their poems from clotheslines out in the
open market to be taken down and read or to be
taken away if you like them enough. Come and
visit our poetry clothesline. Take away a poem you
like; leave one of your own. Clothespins provided.
Will be monitored for content.
James O’Rourke, a poet, published in print and on
TV and radio, is a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation
Teacher/Poet and an experienced reader.
He
believes passionately that poetry is a primarily
vocal art which needs a public airing so that its
sound can add to its sense.

Session III: 12:45 PM - 1:35 PM
Room: L142
Perhaps you are suffering from writer's block or
maybe your lack of confidence has kept you from
writing your first poem. To conquer whatever it is
that is stifling you, this workshop could be your
next portal into the writer's universe. Once you
realize that you are surrounded by the words of
poetry in your everyday life and that it is up to you
to lay hold of and rearrange them according to
your muse, happily, you end up mining for gold in
the recesses of your imagination. This "hands on"
experience invites you to interact with paper words
that you have chosen randomly, rearranged
repeatedly, and glued carefully to your
"canvas." As a reward, your Words-Work can
provide the framework for your next story or it
might even inspire you to tap into your creative
core. But hold on...you could end up surprising
yourself with your first poem too!
From Santana to Beethovan, music inspires us,
entangling our senses in complex reactionary
patterns. Stream of consciousness writing clears
the brain of thoughts which hinder a smooth flow
of creativity.
This workshop relies on your
interpretation of different pieces of music as a
springhead to a polished piece of prose or simply a
vivid reaction. Come, listen and write! The artist
within will feel joy.
Virve Lane received her B.A. in English Education
from Rutgers College and her MA in English and
Comparative
Literatures
from
Montclair
University. A chapter of her master’s thesis, “Otto
Rank’s Theories of Creativity Applied to the Lives
of Three Artists” was published in “Art and Artist“
Magazine.
Virve is an English Professor at
Brookdale and Middlesex Community Colleges.
She also teaches creative writing and, thus, is in
tune with methods which inspire students to
explore and expand their creative potentials.
Judith Pal taught English and French in Bergen
County for over 30 years and was honored as the
2007 Teacher of the Year in her school. She credits
her many European travel experiences and her
participation in the Dodge Foundation Spring and
Fountain and the ATI workshops for enriching her
career and helping to foster an appreciation of
language in her students. She believes that the true
meaning of poetry and creative prose extends
beyond the conspicuous text into the blank spaces
between the lines where the mind's eye can discern
the underlying symbolic essence of the work.
Virve has travelled extensively to four continents
and has skydived.

storytelling, developing

Student will also review industry techniques,
shortcuts and secrets. After a brief lecture and
review, every student will have the opportunity to
create a four-panel comic strip during the
workshop. The three-step process employed will
be (1) outlining an idea, (2) developing a rough
outline version and (3) creating a finished comic
strip. These short-form graphic novels can then be
used by students as a starting point to explore the
development of a full-blown graphic novel on their
own (subsequent to the workshop).
Due to the overwhelming turnout of bands over the
years, we encourage all of you who wish to show
what you and/or your band are made of by
opening this “jam session” to preexisting groups of
all styles: Metal, R&B, Rock, Latin, Hip-Hop, etc.
You will be given the opportunity to play no more
than 2 songs (max time 10 minutes) and will be
required
to
bring
any
additional
amplifiers/equipment your band will need. There
will be a band sign up at the stage the day of the
festival and it will be on a limited first come, first
serve basis, so be sure to sign up early.

Session I: 9:00 AM – 9:50 AM
Session II: 10:45 AM - 11:35 AM
Session III: 1:00 PM - 1:50 PM
Room: S138
In this workshop we will cover the basics of music
production and beat making using Ableton Live. It
is intended to be an introductory session with
emphasis on workflow - one of the most important
aspects of music production. It will include a brief
overview of club music beats and tempos and will
focus on a particular track beginning with the
selection and processing of the samples and
instruments, building a beat, and concluding with
the organization of the track structure. Highly
recommended for those interested in EDM in
general and particularly in crunk, dubstep, glitchhop, moombahton, trap, West Coast bass, etc.
This workshop is a simple yet completely
unreasonable approach to songwriting. It gives the
participant the opportunity to cause a
breakthrough in their ability to produce a volume
of work so that they will be able to see themselves
as a songwriter able to create on command.
So often we as songwriters have this inner voice
that says "I'm an artist and I create when I am
inspired" How about the voice saying " I am an
artist and I create on command, and be able to flex
that muscle when its needed. We will explore the
participants’ inner conversation they have about
who they say they are as a songwriter and cause a
breakthrough so that they produce a volume of
work.
Joro-Boro is a producer and DJ who promotes
entoteck, glitch-folk and post-national bass. He is
primarily interested in musical genres that circuit
bend the archaic and the futuristic and that short
circuit cultural flows. This aesthetic informs his
work resulting in dirty hybrids of local musics:
crunk cumbia, capoeira moombahcore, Balkan
brass juke, etc.
The best comes out when I am allowing creative
energy to flow through me, and not get in its way.
We will explore the things that get in the way of it
be a consistent unstoppable flowing river of
abundant creative energy. The participant will
leave this workshop having created a song in the
moment and transforming the conversation they
have around writing and establishing an
empowering belief system about their ability.
As a DJ, Joro-Boro has toured with Balkan Beat
Box, has repeatedly performed with Bassnectar,
Ana Sia, An-Ten-Nae, Boban Markovic, David
Starfire, DJ Spooky, Filastine, FreQ Nasty, Gogol
Bordello, Kraddy, M-1 (Dead Prez), Maga Bo,
Marty Party, MC Zulu, Method Man, Omar
Souleyman, Prefuse 73, Radiohiro, Tinariwen and
others. In the summer of 2014 Joro-Boro is slated to
perform for the third time at SummerStage in
Central Park, NYC. He is a regular performer at the
Burning Man Festival in the Nevada desert.
Guy Prandstatter is a singer songwriter and
Guitar player who is originally from New Jersey.

With the

championships, the movie Pitch Perfect, and the hit
NBC show The Sing-Off all helping to add
legitimacy to this vocal art form, contemporary a
cappella can be a tremendous addition to any high
school singers list of vocal activities. Prepare
yourself (or your students) for the over 2000
collegiate groups that exist in American colleges
today? Don’t miss out on the opportunity to
integrate contemporary a cappella into your life.
Participants are encouraged to sing a cappella, but may
also bring an accompanying cassette or CD. Note: Any
accompanying recording must NOT include a vocal
track, and all cassettes MUST be cued up and ready to
play.
You’ve seen it on TV…you said to yourself, “I can
do that!” Now it’s your turn! The Voice – Bergen
County Teen Arts Edition workshop is open to
anyone who sings or who has ever wanted to sing.
There is no “harsh” criticism here, only
constructive comments and lots of applause and
support from your fellow performers! The goal is
to join together in appreciating each others’ voices
and talents, not to be “better” than anyone else.
There is never a loser in music…when we sing
from the heart, we are ALL winners!

DANCE – DUB STEP
Ryan Holder
Session I: 9:45 AM - 10:35 AM
Session II: 11:15 AM – 12:05 AM
Session III: 1:10 PM – 2:00 PM
Room: S111
(Each session limited to 40 participants)
As the objective of this wonderful day is to
celebrate the arts in our schools how appropriate to
incorporate a popular YouTube craze that everyone
has heard of. Yes, the HARLEM SHAKE.
Dub Step is a new underground movement within
the electro-music industry. Some ingredients
include Hip Hop, Trip Hop, EDM, and rock & roll.
In this workshop, students will learn a dance
sequence involving isolations, pop and locking,
and gliding. The students will also focus on the
delivery and feeling that goes behind the track. By
the end of the course, the students will have a
better understanding of the Dub-Step movement
and a brand new dance to show off to their friends.
The objective is to get as much student
participation as possible from each individual
school so they shine and win the "SPOTLIGHT"
during the short Flash Mob/ Harlem Shake
segment. Whether you have two participants or
twenty, each school is asked to put together a 15
second Harlem Shake routine that represents their
pride, creativity, and support for their school.
These 15 second snippets will be put together by
Master
choreographer
Ryan
Holder
into
a synchronized 2 minute Flash mob routine.
The program begins with a short warm up led by
the teacher, as the students listen to the song they
are about to work with. In the program, the
students will learn a dance sequence to the sounds
of Dub-Step.
The best school would take advantage of this "15
sec wild form of expression" by using whatever
their creative minds can imagine (that is also school
appropriate)! We've all seen these videos of the
Harlem Shake on the news or on our computers via
YouTube, so familiarizing yourself with this trend
should be easy and even fun.
Ryan Holder, professional director/choreographer
will be returning this year for another stellar fun
dubstep workshop. Ryan has been in the music and
entertainment industries for over 5 years and has
won several awards including the "young
choreographers award" in 2008. At his young age,
his talents have enabled him to work with such
names as Alan Cummung, Liza Minnelli, Savion
Glover, Ludacris, B.O.B, and tour the world.
Recently working as choreographer, artist
development coach, and tour manager Ryan is in
the process of developing his next new professional
"triple threat" piece and is searching for all kinds of
talent to fill his entertainment company, W.A.R.P'D
Entertainment. He will also be choreographing this
year’s flash mob/Harlem shake routine for "Rep'
Your School".
We will have a mass rehearsal so each school
knows where and when to "bust their moves". The
biggest, brightest, most creative school, will win
the "SPOTLIGHT" slot and have a special segment
dedicated to them. Lastly, we go viral with our
Harlem Shake dance. Schools can vote online for
who they thought was the best, but the true fun
will be seeing those video views sky rocket to the
MILLIONS!!! How many of you out there are part
of an international YouTube trend? Now you will
have that awesome chance.

Enter as actors and writers; exit as cast members
of an original micro-mini-musical! After a brief
introduction, we will brainstorm ideas, set up the
story order, cast and rehearse. An original song or
"re-lyric-ized" existing song or two will be added.
Dialogue will be set through improv. Scenes will
be manageable and concise. Let's write our own
idea - or set an existing story on it's feet. Trust your
inner Broadway and improv skills. We will utilize
every minute. Super-focused; Super-fun!
Students will use monologues supplied by the
workshop artist. They will use the monologue to
go through the steps of breaking down the copy to
see what it offers in the way of information for
them to build their character, rhythm, date, time
intent, and connection. They will then perform the
copy. Adjustments will be given to see how they
think on their feet.
JC Montgomery has appeared in many shows on
Broadway in New York City including “Big Fish”,
“The Scottsboro Boys”, “The Color Purple”,
“Parade”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Swing”,

(Each session limited to 30 participants)
Students will gain an understanding of the concept,
techniques and philosophy behind the art of
pantomime. During the course, they will be taught
various movement exercises and illusions which
they can use to act out basic scenes. By exploring
pantomime,
students
can
become
more
coordinated, focused and in tune with their bodies
– useful skills for anyone with an interest in the
performing arts.
Creating the illusion of violence is a rare instance in
which the actor's ability to draw on truthful
experience must remain separate from the external
mechanics of the performance. The scene must be
safe--or your show closes after the first
performance! Learn to create the safe illusion of
violence in this introductory session: How to
perform slaps and punches -- chokes and falls -and live to tell the tale! We'll learn the techniques
and concepts that are the building blocks for all
kinds of theatrical combat, moving toward
performing a rehearsed fight with a partner.
Alexander Wittmann Gurevich has been involved
in the performing arts since early childhood. At the
age of five Alex began learning pantomime from
his father, an accomplished mime who had his own
theater company in Saint Petersburg and was a
lifelong friend of Marcel Marceau. At six years old,
he performed at a showcase for Arts on the
Hudson, a nonprofit organization aimed toward
providing art classes for children of elementary
school age.. Since then, Alex has been involved in
various
presentations,
both
locally
and
internationally. He has displayed his passion and
talent for pantomime through his participation in
competitions, festivals and workshops located in
Russia, Denmark, Slovakia and Germany. Recently,
he placed high honors in the renowned Thespian
Festival for his rendition of Marcel Merceau’s “The
Mask Maker.” Alex has also been studying
Dramatic Theatre and has had several featured
roles in productions as well as his most recent lead
as Jaime Escalante in the play “Stand and Deliver.”
Alex is always working to perfect his art and
believes that one of the best ways of learning is
through teaching. He considers himself lucky to be
a representative of an art form that is almost extinct
and he is eager to pass on his knowledge to others.
Fight Director Dan Renkin has worked from
Broadway to regional theatre, from As The World
Turns to the Metropolitan Opera. His work has
been award-winning in the Chester Horn Festival
and
award-nominated
in
the
Midtown
International Theatre Festival. He trained with the
legendary B.H. Barry (the only fight director to
receive Tony Honors) and serves on the faculty of
the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Circle in
the Square, HB Studios and the New York Film
Academy, and has also been a guest artist for
programs including Cap21, the Strasberg Institute
and Montclair State University.

SYMPOSIUM FOR VISUAL AND
PERFORMING ARTS TEACHERS

MANGA BASICS
JAPANESE COMIC ART
Teresa DeFabrizio
Session I: 9:15 AM – 10:05 AM
Session II: 11:00 AM - 11:50 AM
Session III: 12:30 PM - 1:20 PM
Room: L145
Is teaching Art about getting the right answer --- or
imagining new possibilities?
“Manga” or Japanese comics have become
extremely popular with readers of all ages.
However, knowing how to “copy” a style isn’t
enough. Create your own characters and learn the
basics of anatomy and expression that fuel this
dynamic art form! This workshop aids students in
creating dynamic anatomy, body language and
striking features.
In building an art program, art educators understand
the need to develop a series of lessons or
experiences for students to explore the nature of
materials and processes. With that understanding,
the student is then able to create a visual solution to
a conceptual idea.
This year’s collegial discussion will be framed
around the variety of ways to develop constructive
learning experiences in the art studio. What are
some of the effective experiences that you can recall
to share at the symposium?
Teresa DeFabrizio is an artist, teacher, and
instructor who's fortunate to teach, create, paste,

Session I: 10:00 AM – 10:50 AM
Session II: 11:30 AM – 12:20 PM
Session III: 1:00 PM – 1:50 PM

The workshop begins with the introduction to the
correct proportions of the human head. The second
step is a demonstration with explanations of the
anatomy from the artist’s point of view. After the
short introduction, each student takes about 2 lbs.
of clay and prepares an egg form. Each sculpture
emerges under close supervision and help of the
instructor. At the end of the workshop, the
instructor has a discussion with students about
their creations. The workshop is highly
concentrated and educational for beginners as well
as professionals.
Learn the art of drawing caricatures, or cartoon

COLLEGE READINESS WORKSHOP

Are you ready to apply to college? Do you know
what you want to study? Do you even know what
you want to do? Are you undecided or are you on
the fence between a few options? Attend our
workshop to take the first steps into your future
today. Participants will learn how to answer these
and more important questions as you begin the
college search and enrollment process.
you continue and finish high school. Once you
narrow your school choices it is important to visit
these schools. We will go over the types of visits
typically available to prospective students and their
families, how to arrange a visit and tour, speaking
with the Admissions Office and Academic
Departments, and what to take-away from these
visits so the experience will assist in making an
informed decision about which college to attend.
Our workshop is designed for high school students
who are:
1. nearing graduation and would like to get a
jump-start on this process
2. ready to start thinking about selecting a
college
3. ready to begin considering possible career
options
Finally, we will discuss if the college is a good
choice based on :
1. Fit – Will the school nurture my academic
interests?
Are there transition support
services in place? Will I fit in? Will I make
friends? Is there a student Life I can get
involved with?
2. Finance – Can I afford it? What is tuition?
Are there scholarships? Is Financial Aid
available? Calculating the cost of the entire
degree? Where can I save some money if
affordability is a priority?
This workshop will begin with the first set of
questions concerning your aspirations and how to
locate colleges that cater to specific majors and
careers. It is good to narrow the college options
down to a few selections because college
applications often require a fee and this can make
applying quite expensive rather quickly. After
exploring ways to search for colleges we will begin
talking about what colleges expect you to have
completed in high school and how you can begin
making sure you meet these requirements. This
often includes but is not limited to:
1. specific high school coursework
2. meeting minimum GPA requirements
3. SAT’s
4. Art Portfolio or Music Demo
5. Essay/Writing Sample
6. Letters of Recommendation
After attending this workshop, high school
students will be able to generate a game plan with
asset of strategies in place to begin the process of
researching and selecting colleges to support you
on your way into post-secondary education and
career training.
The presentation will be given by various staff
from the Office of Admissions and Recruitment at
Bergen Community College as well as the Office of
Student Life, all of whom share years of experience
in Admissions, insights into the variety of colleges
available, expertise in the enrollment process and
requirements from the perspective of the college,
and succeeding and getting involved in college.
By learning proactively what colleges are expecting
you can make sure you meet those requirements as
