ELA/Literacy Spring Operational 2015 Grade 3 Literary Analysis Task How Illustrations Help VF651235 Sample Student Responses (no annotations included) VF651235 Items: “Coyote and Fire” and “How Big Bear Stuck to the Sky” Anchor Set A1 – A8 A1 "Coyote and Fire" and "How Big Bear Stuck to the Sky" are two stories that have illustrations that help the reader understand the character's actions in these folktales. The illustration in "Coyote and Fire" shows me that Coyote, Cougar, Fox, Squirrel, Antelope, Frog, and Wood worked together to steal the fire and acomplish their goal of getting Fire from the skookums and giving it to the the people. In paragraph 8 it states "So he asked his sisters, the three huckleberries who lived in his stomach. They were wise. They would surely know what to do . And they did." The three huckleberries said he should make a relay race with his friends for Fire. In paragraph 9 it says "Carefully, Coyote listened to their plan. Then he went back down the mountain and called together all the animals to tell them what they must do." The first illstration in "How Big Bear Stuck to the Sky" shows me Otter trying to reach Sky's floor. In paragraph 9 it states "He jumped so high his head thumped the sky floor. Otter fell back to Earth and WHOOSH! Down the mountain he slid, riding on his belly all the way to the bottom." That tells me that Otter did not break through Sky's floor. On the other side of Sky's floor was birds of all color and sun light. The second illustration in "How Big Bear Stuck to the Sky" shows me Wolverine, Otter, and the Great Spirit looking up at Fisher (Big Bear) in the sky. In paragraph 19 it states "Before he could hit Sky's floor, the Great Spirit, admiring Fisher's persistence, took pity on the bear. He adorned Fisher with stars, and set him in a place of honor in the sky."
