2010-11 Season Outlook with Coach Parrish
Who are your top returners?
We have four players back from last year and one of them red-shirted. The four are LeSean
Wilcox, Tommy Barrett, Brian Harris and Jordan Bernardo (red-shirt). Tommy and LeSean played
significant roles last season. For us to reach our peak they need to continue to improve. Brian and
Joran also need to be key elements on our team this year. Our returner’s mental approach is every
bit as important as their physical approach. They need to convey to the new players how tough
mentally we need to be in order to be successful.
Who will be your top freshmen contributors?
Right now we are very balanced. I see several freshmen and new comers to be major contributors
How tough is it to play in the SWAC?
The SWAC is as good as it gets. The fact that we have played in two out of the last three National
Championships and CEU placed third in the nation a year ago shows how tough our league is.
What are your predictions for this season?
The SWAC will have several outstanding teams. We have a lot of new players; if they buy in and
work hard we could compete with anyone
What will it take to win another National Championship?
To win a National Championship a ton needs to go right. You have to peak at the right time and
your players need to play unbelievably unselfish and tough.
How important is fan support?
Fan support is very important. Over the years I can think of several games that we won where if
we didn’t have the support we needed I am not sure we would have come out on top

Head Coach Norm Parrish enters into his 20th season as the
head coach of the SLCC Bruins. In 2009 the team won SLCC first
ever National Championship along with the second consecutive
Region 18 Championship. Coach Parrish was named NJCAA Division One Coach of the Year. Under his stewardship he has had 9 NJCAA All-Americans and has had 24 NJCAA Academic All-Americans.
In 2008 Coach Parrish guided the Bruins to a 1st place finish
in the Region 18 tournament and a 2nd place finish at the NJCAA
national tournament.
The five-time Region 18 Coach of the Year led the Bruins to the
2000 SWAC regular season championship. In just his third season
as head coach in 1994, Parrish steered the Bruins to the Region
18 tournament title and a fifth place finish at the NJCAA National
Tournament.
A lot of the successes under Coach Parrish have been attributed to his philosophy of team play. Through commitment to each
team member, hard work, mental and physical toughness, SLCC
has earned the respect for their tenacity and has become a national force.
Over 200 players have worn the Bruin uniform under Parrish
since he became the head coach in 1991, and 80 of those have
moved on to the NCAA Division I ranks, with several now playing
professionally overseas as well as in the NBA. During his tenure, 9
players have been named NJCAA All-Americans and 24 have been
Academic All-Americans.
Parrish has recruited and coached players from all over the
United States and many foreign countries. Players have come from
Greece, England, Turkey, Australia, Switzerland, Brazil, Russia, Serbia, and the West African countries of Senegal, Cameroon, and
Ivory Coast. Returned LDS missionaries are also an integral part of
his recruiting process. “The returned missionaries have a unique
perspective on life and a level of maturity that is advantageous.”
Prior to coming to Salt Lake, Parrish was an assistant to the
late Lynn Archibald at the University of Utah in 1988-89. Prior to
his time at Utah, Parrish was an assistant at Nampa High School in
Nampa Idaho, coaching football and basketball.
Parrish played collegiately at Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho) in
Rexburg, Idaho and then at Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa,
Idaho receiving All-Region honors at both institutions. Parrish attended Viewmont High School in Bountiful, UT where he received
All-State honors in football and basketball.
When not in the gym, Norm and his wife Kaye enjoy spending
time with their three sons Travis (20) serving an LDS mission in Singapore, Matt (17) and Collin (13). All three sons are very active in
multiple sports. As a family they enjoy traveling, water skiing and
camping

Assistant Coach
Todd Phillips
Todd is starting his third season at Salt Lake Community College.
In his first season at Salt Lake Community College, Todd helped guide
the Bruins to the region eighteen championships and the school’s
first ever National Championship.” Last year’s team really “Bought
in” to our system. We played with tremendous toughness and
determination all year. Toughness is what we teach and preach every
day in practice, it’s what we hang our hat on” Coach Phillips said.
Prior to joining the Bruins in 2008, Coach Phillips spent eight years as
the assistant men’s basketball coach for the Westminster College Griffins,
a NAIA Division I school in the heart of Salt Lake City, Utah. There, he
was directly responsible for game preparation, recruiting and player
development that ultimately helped the Griffins to eight 20-plus-win
seasons, six conference titles and six NAIA National Tournament births.
“Todd is a proven coach he has had success every where he has
been,” said Bruin Head Coach Norm Parrish. “He has recruited the
state of Utah as well as anyone.”
The Phillips File:
Phillips has been the Adidas Utah Pump-N-Run Head Coach and Director of
Basketball. Some of his main responsibilities were coaching and recruiting the top Hometown: Boise, ID
Utah players for 15U, 16U and 17U. In 2004, his team advanced to the Final Four of
High School: Borah
the Adidas Super 64.
Coach Phillips grew up and played High School basketball at Borah High School in College: Snow 1996-98
Boise, Idaho. Following High School he played college ball at Snow College and then Lewis & Clark College 1998-1999
went on to play at Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho where he helped Bachelor of Science
Education & Kinesiology
guide the Warriors to a conference title.
Todd has been married to his wife Bobbi for 8 years they live in North Salt Lake Coaching:
and have a four year old daughter named Kinzi Jo.

Paul Marble
Assistant Coach Paul Marble returns for his seventh year on the Bruin
Staff. Coach Marble works primarily with the big men and has coached
three All-Americans in Rekalin Sims, Gary Wilkinson and DJ Wright.

Lynn Archibald. Coach Marble and his wife Wendy enjoy spending time
with their children.

SLCC President
Dr. Cynthia Bioteau
Dr. Cynthia A. Bioteau is the seventh president of Salt Lake Community College, an urban multi-campus college of 60,000 students located throughout the
Salt Lake Valley.
She has over 30 years of experience as an educator and administrator, serving in educational and mental health institutions throughout the East, and most
recently in North Carolina.
Dr. Bioteau earned her Bachelor’s Degree at the University of New Hampshire,
her Master’s Degree at Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts, and her
Doctor of Philosophy Degree at Lesley University, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Dr. Bioteau received the 2002 Boston Public Schools Higher Education Partnership Service Award and the 2001 Outstanding Developmental Program in New England Award. Contemporary
research includes Critical Transformations: Essays of Voice for Nontraditional Adult Learners. Other publications
include Beyond the Open Gate: Influences on Student Success and The Community College as a Catalyst for Change.
She is also responsible for creating and implementing the first associate degree in Nanotechnology for the state
of North Carolina, as well as the five-college National Initiative recently funded through the Unites States Department
of Labor – The National Center for the Biotechnology Workforce.
She is known for her passion for positioning the community college as the core and engine of economic and workforce development.
Perhaps her most important accomplishments, however, are the two wonderful adult children she shares with
her husband of 32 years. Together they enjoy family, fly-fishing, kayaking, hiking and gardening.
Vice President
Dr. Deneece Huftalin
Dr. Huftalin serves as Vice President for Student Services at Salt Lake Community College and has worked in the student affairs field for twenty-three
years. In addition to working with student services, she has been very involved in student leadership development, learning communities on campus,
and strategic planning and assessment initiatives. Deneece earned a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Utah, a Master’s degree at University of California, Los Angeles and a doctorate at the University of Utah.
Deneece has been at the College since 1992, serving first as the Director
of Academic and Career Advising and then as the Dean of Students. In her
roles, she strives to strengthen the student experience at SLCC by providing
opportunities for students to get involved on campus, connect with faculty,
and achieve their educational goals. She serves on the faculty for Leadershape, Inc., a non-profit organization focused on college student leadership
development and is involved in regional and national student affairs boards.
Prior to moving to Utah, Deneece worked at Harper Community College and
Northwestern University in Illinois.
Compared to our amazing student athletes, Deneece can boast of no athletic ability; although she can throw a mean boccie ball, finish at least a 5k and
beat her kids down a ski run. She lives with three brilliant men: her husband, Tim, and her two sons, Max and Eli.

SLCC Athletic Staff
Norma Carr
Athletic Director
Norma Carr is a sports icon in the state
of Utah. She was the only woman considered
in the top 25 Most Influential People in Utah
Sports. As the first woman in Utah to serve as
athletic director for both men and women’s
programs and the first to officiate in boy’s
high school basketball games, she has been
recognized as a standard bearer among Utah
sports figures.
Norma graduated as a five sport athlete
from BYU in 1969 and went on to receive her
Master’s Degree at the University of Utah. She started her coaching career at
Davis High School and in 1975 went on to coach at the University of Utah. During her 14 years at Utah, she was head Volleyball Coach for five years, assisted
with Women’s Basketball and Softball for one season. She was named “Coach
of the Year” for either Region or Conference in 1976, ‘78,’80, ‘85 and ‘87. She
also served as the assistant women’s athletic director for two years.
Since joining the Bruins in 1989, Norma has been at the helm of building
both the athletic program and its facilities. Norma took a struggling athletic
program that consisted of only two sports (Men’s and Women’s Basketball) and
turned it into a successful five-sport program. She oversaw the construction of
the Lifetime Activities Center and Bruin Arena, Cate Field and the softball diamond. Her teams have always finished among the very top in the conference,
having won numerous titles in the past 15 years. In 2009 the Men’s Basketball
team won the NJCAA National Championship. Norma was inducted into the
Utah Softball Hall of Fame; the Utah Coaches of Merit Hall of Fame; and the
UHSSA Officials Hall of Fame. In 2007 she was named to the UHSSA “Circle
of Fame”. Finally in 2009 she was awarded the National Administator of the
Year. She coordinated Volleyball officials for the Western Athletic and Mountain West Conferences and is the current Region Director of the NJCAA Region
18. She is also Chairperson for NJCAA Softball.
