Year four brought a fresh, new look to Washington’s only professional motorcycle hillclimb, the
Northwest Nitro Nationals, near Sunnyside, Washington, which features the tallest hills of the
season. Both riders and spectators noticed the vast improvements to the venue, mainly due to
the removal and reshuffling of thousands of yards of dirt which created a larger spectator,
vendor and sponsor area, closer toilet and vendor access, better parking, pits and camping,
more visible starting lines, and the placement of even more water on the hills. The hard work
paid off with over 500 entries and 4,000-plus spectators attending from across the West, and
happy racers and spectators alike.
The event was the second round of the 2014 Malcolm Smith Racing, Klim, Pole Position
Raceways North American Hillclimb Association (NAHA) Championship Series, and also
featured dozens of classes for stock and altered bikes and, for the first time, 4-wheelers.

The hill, located 30 miles east of Yakima and 15 miles north of Sunnyside, has a lot of history.
First used in 1962, hillclimb events were run on it, off and on, up until 1999. It is a bit remote,
but is serviced by two highways, and is easy to get to from anywhere in the Northwest. There
are also a large number of different competition routes available, all averaging around 800 feet
which makes this the longest hill on the NAHA circuit.
Friday’s competition included a multitude of trophy and semi-pro classes, and used a new,
tougher route that featured two new road jumps, and slowed riders down, pro and amateur
alike. The hill watering system worked better than ever and put down over 300,000 gallons of
water on the hill leading up to and during the event.
As usual, the hill was super tough for the trophy riders. Young Idaho rider Karson Lloyd had
another great weekend, winning the always huge 251-Up stock 4-stroke class, and becoming
the ONLY rider the entire weekend who got a stock bike over the hill, (he was the only guy to do
that at the season-opening X-12 Hillclimb in Utah 3 weeks earlier as well). At only 16 years of
age, Lloyd is going to be scary good in the pro ranks in another season or two.
At 39, Matt Morris, from Grants Pass, Oregon, also had another stellar weekend, winning the
125, 250 2-stroke, 250 4-stroke, 250 altered and 250 pro classes. He will be a beast in the old
timer classes that he’ll be eligible to enter next year when he finally hits 40.
As usual, the pro minis turned heads and Utah’s Alexa Whitlock beat the guys to win the mini
pro class. It is always amazing to see how high kids on mini bikes can get and it is encouraging
to see a whole new generation of talented pro hillclimbers coming up. Samantha Curtin came
back with vengeance and topped the women’s pro class, topping always tough Chelsea
Peterson and two more Whitlock women, Brooke and Lexi.
On the pro side of things, Utah’s Jason Smith had another incredible weekend. He won the 450
pro main, and the 700 pro main, and the Open pro main, and wrapped that up by taking third in
the side-by-side X-Climb, exactly the same finishes that he had at X-12 three weeks earlier. As
stated then, Smith is simply at the top of his game right now and his competitors are going to
have to step up their own riding to beat him with any consistency.
Utah’s ageless, (now well into his 40’s) Travis Whitlock remains arguably as good as he was ten
or twenty years ago riding smooth, smart and steady and was rewarded with a third in the Open,
second in the 700, and sixth in the 450 finals, beating guys less than half his age. And Northern
California’s Logan Mead had another steady, solid weekend with a second, third and fifth in the
Open, 700 and 450 Mains. He is young and still learning and just needs one, tiny jump and he’ll
be right there with Smith.
Also of note was Southern Californian Bret Peterson who had a very respectable weekend, after
suffering through all kinds of problems at the first round. He pulled of a sixth in the Open Pro
Final and a third in the 450 Main, all of this after suffering a HORRENDOUS get-off in the 700
class when his motor literally exploded, putting a rod through the cases and sending him
violently over the bars. But his coolest ride of the weekend was winning the KLIM King of the
Hill event at the end of the weekend on Sunday afternoon. This wild and innovative climb pitted
the top six 450 Pro Main finishers on a virgin, 1,500 foot steep virgin hill face. With no practice,
no tracks and no water, the thing looked like the start of the world’s steepest desert race, and
bikes were pinned for well over 30 seconds. It looked like Jason Smith had it in the bag, but he
bobbled and Peterson blasted by to take the win.
